Update: I tried both and the hands down winner is The Princess Royal.
I found The Double disjointed and rushed, and didn’t feel anything for the characters after 2 episodes, so no more of that for me.
Vs. The Princess Royal was funny and engaging, and I really want to see how this second chance life turns out — their bickering and comfort/regret with each other is appealing to watch. The palace intrigue is rather obvious, but their interactions are fun. Plus the main guy does a really good bitchy face. I’m now on ep 6.
Should I watch The Double or The Princess Royal?

Book read: Poppy War, not my thing
I picked it up because the description was Asian-inspired fantasy. It wasn’t my thing, even the though the story and world building was interesting and I wanted to see what happened.
Most of it was very much a typical modern YA tone, with a chosen one-humble beginnings-badass when trained kind of story, and that was fine since I was mostly reading to see what happened to her. But it veered into horrific detailed war crime descriptions and I had this uncomfortable feeling throughout that it was China-centric/anti-Japan in spite of its fantasy setting. Sure enough, the end notes mention that the atrocities were lifted straight from the Rape of Nanking and other China/Japan tensions.
So, FYI.

I enjoy all the tasty-looking Asian bento and lunch videos on YouTube but … ladies! I want to see you make them for yourselves, not your lame ass husband who’d never make such a nice thing for you at the crack of dawn. I don’t even want to tap on the video anymore if I see the word “husband” in the title.

Marry My Husband 1-8 random thoughts
Enjoying the show and all the gif sets about the hunky allowance man. And his self care makeover inspired by her.
I miss the cute cheeks Park Min Young used to have, but she’s still very charming. I could watch her in every romance until the end of time.
I appreciate that the deadbeat boyfriend/husband is randomly funny. It keeps the show from veering into pure frustration. Also the actors just really enjoyable to watch, he goes all in.

I wish cdrama actresses and actors weren’t quite so skinny, it’s alarming how unhealthy they look — I thoroughly enjoyed Story of Kunning Palace but someone really needs to improve whatever’s driving the ML and FL to those ends. I had the same thought after Untamed too, in one of the BTS clips those poor boys were specifically told that they had to be extra thin to pull off the historical costumes.

Story of Kunning Palace Ep 1 - Relationship Chart Recap
In which I pretend the author thing isn't part of the story.
As always, charts don’t spoil future eps.
I'm still in the middle of watching the series, but I'm starting to get confused with all the different palace study buddies and people cropping up. So, we're back at the relationship chart recaps. Hope the way I'm representing future vs present doesn't bite me in later episodes.

Blue flag does many subtle things remarkably well, but one of my favorite is that Taichi is a pretty average looking protagonist, but every once in a while the camera/POV switches to the perspective of someone who's in love with him and suddenly he's gorgeous. Nothing about him changes- he's drawn with the exact same features as always- but it's instantly obvious why they love him. We see him through their eyes instead of through Taichi's own, and he becomes the most beautiful person in the world and he doesn't even realize it.
Taichi looks up at Touma with doe eyes and food stuck to his face and suddenly he's heart achingly cute. He gives a full body laugh and it's so rare and genuine that Futaba/we through Futaba's eyes stare in lovestruck awe.
It's just. It's so subtle and deftly conveys so, so much without uttering a single word. But it also strengthens the fact that the camera POV is tied to the characters. So when Taichi/the default POV does the same to the others, every time it oogles Touma or makes Futaba glow, that's Taichi. That's his feelings, his love, his attraction that he doesn't even realize he's feeling yet. And you reach that final reveal in the final pages of the story and then you go back to the beginning and you the reader have the fanfic oh. moment. Because it's been there all along.
#i blitzed through this manga it was amazing#need to reread and look for this#ao no flag#blue flag#manga
