ERIC CAMPBELL born Alfred Eric Campbell on April 26, 1879 in Dunoon, Scotland.
He appeared in eleven films with Charles Chaplin, in which he usually played the role of the great villain. Initially, he played in local theaters in Wales and Scotland. He was noticed and hired by the English impresario Fred Karno for his comedy troupes "Fun Factory", which also featured other comedians, Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel. Eric Campbell arrived in New York with Karno's group in July 1914 and was soon hired by Broadway producer Charles Frohman. Eric became very popular as a stage actor. In late 1915, Charlie Chaplin and his brother Sydney, who were in New York to sign a contract with Mutual, found Eric working on George M. Cohan's play "Pom Pom," and in March 1916 took him to Hollywood. Eric Campbell was a huge man, standing over six feet tall and weighing over 250 pounds. He also wore heavy makeup; black eyebrows, darkened eyes, and a long, untidy beard. His first film was "The Floorwalker" (1916), in which he played the role of a tough villain. He played the same, sinister character to the film in other films, such as "The Rink" (1916), "The Pawnshop" (1916), "The Adventurer" (1917), "The Cure" (1917), "The Immigrant" (1917), "Easy Street" (1917). Early in 1917, Campbell made his last film for Mutual, "The Adventurer", after which Charlie Chaplin began building his own studio. During this time, Campbell worked with Mary Pickford and starred in Amarilly of Clothes-Line Alley (1917). His personal life was dotted with setbacks. On July 9, 1917, his wife died suddenly of a heart attack after dinner at a Santa Monica restaurant near their home. His 16-year-old daughter, Una, was hit by a car and seriously injured. He also struggled with family problems. In December, Campbell attended a Christmas party at the Vernon Country Club and drove back to Los Angeles very drunk. As he approached the intersection of Wilshire Blvd and Vermont Ave, traveling at over 60 mph, he lost control of his car, crossed Wilshire and collided head-on with another car, killing himself instantly. He died on his way home in a car accident on December 20, 1917. He was 37 years old. Una Campbell, the actor's only child, returned to the UK to live with relatives in Nottingham after her father died. She married Philip O. Bull in Lewisham in 1930 and died in Croydon in 1967. A 1996 documentary film, Chaplin's Goliath: In Search of Scotland's Forgotten Star, written and directed by Kevin MacDonald, explored Campbell's life and work. During filming, a plaque commemorating Campbell was placed at Rosedale Cemetery and another was added to the Castle House Museum in Castle Gardens, Dunoon.

Chapter 11
After going through reading the requirements for what I needed for UA, I decided to go for a walk. I was grateful that mom was sleeping at the time. So I didn't have to go through the whole talking with her. As I walked, I couldn't stop smiling. I was still in disbelief that I even got into UA. Or how I got to meet All Might and be given a quirk.
In my excitement, I made my way to the pawnshop. I was even happy at the fact I didn't cross paths with anyone from school. And when I got to the shop, I saw the owner sitting behind the counter. He was reading his paper and had a hot cup nearby. Most likely his afternoon coffee. I tried to keep my excitement down when I reached the counter. That's when the owner looked up. "How's it going, kid?"
"Oh, hi, Uncle." I couldn't stop smiling as I leaned on the counter. "I got into UA."
He folded his paper and placed it down on the counter. "Congrats, kid." I then watched as he headed to the back room. Before long, he returned with a yellow book bag and placed it before me. "Think of this as a gift for getting into that high school."
My smile grew as I grabbed the bag. "Thank you, Uncle."
"Look inside." When I opened the bag, I saw that there were new school supplies. Even a wallet and a key chain. "That key is to a storage locker near UA. And in the wallet is a new station yearly pass. Even gave you a few folding skateboards."
I closed the book bag and threw it over my shoulders as I put it on. "Thanks so much, Uncle." I bowed before him.
"You're welcome, kid. If you study for your driver's license, I could pull a few strings and get that bike you wanted."
"You really mean it?" He nodded before sitting back behind the counter.
"You should probably talk to the twins. I'm sure they got something for you. After all," He took a sip of his coffee. "Don't you need a hero suit for this school?" I quickly nodded and said my goodbyes. With that, I went around to the back ally. There, past a few stairways, was the hidden tattoo shop. Taking a few deep breaths, I stepped inside.
When opening the door, I was greeted by loud, heavy English rock music. And at the far end was Micky, seeming to work on one of his clients. Which meant that his twin, Sydney, was in the back making calls. That was until she stepped out of the back room and spotted me. [ENG] "Yo, Splits! Wha' ya doin' here?"
That's when Micky looked up and waved me over. [ENG] "Splits! Miss ya, homeboy." I couldn't help but shake my head as I approached the twins. Thanks to them, I learned some English to watch the American All Might movies. When I reached the twins, Sydney pulled out one of the nearby chairs. Which I happily sat down in.
Even though they knew Japanese, I was grateful they agreed to only speak English with me. [ENG] "I got in."
[ENG] "Wo! Grats man. So, did the old man give ya the stuff?" I pointed to my bookbag. "Nice." Then I watched as Micky's client got up. Guess even he was going to take a break. "Wait. Ain't it the school that requires a hero get up?" I quirky nodded.
I then watched as Sydney went back to her office. While she was back there, Micky went about asking me what hero name I was thinking about. Even went about if I decided to take him up on his job offer. [ENG] "I'm not too sure about that job. I would have said yes if I didn't get into UA. But I'll still think about it. Maybe after I graduate. Since it sounds amazing. And I don't know what hero name I want yet."
Just then, Sydney came back with a suitcase. [ENG] "Had my guys work on those lame drawings ya had. But no luck, fanboy." She then opened the case and took out what seemed like one of her cyberpunk masks. "They least gave ya the ears. And it only does emojis."
[ENG] "Ain't bad for last-minute work either." I looked at Micky, and he was snickering. "Especially when we had to dumb down everythin."
"What do you mean?" I looked back to Sydney, and she gave me a notebook. As I skimmed through it, I saw how these were plans for a high-tech suit. "Wait! Ya two were planning on giving me something like this?"
Now Sydney was the one chuckling. "Well, ya always helpin' us, and ya wanna be a hero. So, we were gonna help ya out another way if ya ain't get into UA." I couldn't help hugging the notebook, and I smiled at them. "So, when ya start?"
"In a week." The look that went between them was strange, but I ignored it. "Don't worry. I'll still be doing deliveries on my off time." They smiled again.
"Just don't work too hard. And come back when ya ready for the, you know." Micky winked at me before getting back to work. With that, I thanked them again before taking the case and heading home.
âŠ
As I stepped into the school office, I was surprised to see Deku. What was he doing here? While we sat and waited, I couldn't help but notice he was writing in his notebook. But before I could say anything, the principal stepped in. At that, he was clapping while smiling.
"Congratulations to both of you." He then walked over to Deku. "I'm shocked you even got in, Midoriya. But here we are." What! I then watched as the vice principal hand over a few papers to Deku and then myself. "These are a copy of your transcripts. For your personal records."
The vice principal then approached me and had a second set of papers. "We already sent a copy to UA. But here's your copy of your honor rolls documents." He then had a grumpy look as he side-eye towards Deku. "I do hope they kick that nobody out once they realize he's a fraud." With that, he gave me a smile and walked away.
After the principal sent Deku off, his smile went away. "And here I thought it was difficult to get into that school. What a shame." He then looked over at me. "Even if you are the best this school has to offer, you're also a nobody. I wouldn't be surprised if you got kicked out once they realized how much of a punk you are. Now, be gone, you brat."
As I walked these halls for the last time, the words the principal told me rang in my head. So even he doesn't like me? Why should I even care about that? Why should I be worrying about his approval? It doesn't matter! I got into UA with my own strength, and nobody can take that from me!
When I reached the school entrance, I saw how Deku was leaning against the wall. Why was he still here? And just looking at him reminded me he also got into UA. So I stormed over to him and dragged him to the back of the building. He didn't even put up a fight as I threw him into the wall. "What the fuck, nerd?"
He just stood sitting on the ground and not looking at me. "Congratulations to your too, Kacchan." I picked him up by the collar and pinned him to the wall. It was then that I noticed that his face was all red.
"Nerd!" That's when he looked at me. "I was supposed to be the only one from this dump to get into UA! So, how the fuck!" As I held him, it became harder to breathe. It didn't help when I felt something wet burning down my face. "Damn it!" I dropped Deku and started to turn around.
"What's the matter, Kacchan?" I looked back, and the look Deku held made me so confused. But I simply turned back to him. When I did, I was not expecting him to wipe the tears away from my face. "Did the principal say something after I left?" How did he know? How does he always know these things? I nodded my head.
That's when I saw the sweet face Deku always had changed. It almost took me aback when I heard him lightly growl. I snapped my fingers in his face, and he blinked a few times. Which then had him have his typical sad face. I pinched his cheek. "I'll be fine. He doesn't know what he was talking about."
Deku's smile returned, but not in his eyes. "That's right! Because Kacchan is amazing, and he earned his spot at UA." Then his frown returned. "What did he say?"
"It doesn't matter." The nerd started to walk away. "And where you think you're going? I'm not done talking with you, nerd."
"Nobody speaks badly about Kacchan." He then looked over his shoulder at me. "I don't care about what people say or do to me. But you shouldn't have to deal with that." I quickly rushed over to Deku and threw him against the wall.
"You stop that! He's the past now. We are going to start a new school and never deal with that extra again. So, get out whatever is going through your head." I then took a quick look around the corner before standing before Deku. "Let's go make a wish at the fountain to celebrate our future at UA." With that, Deku's face lit up, and we started to walk to the park.
As we walked, I couldn't get the image of the face Deku held moments ago. I had never seen him like that before. Then again, have I ever seen him that angry? And here I thought I'd seen all the faces that nerd could make. But maybe I was wrong. I have seen him angry before, but never like that. At that, I never heard him growl before. I have seen when he fakes his smiles, which worries me. Yet, I can't do anything because then people would think I'm weak.
When we got to the park's center fountain, I took a deep breath. I looked at Deku and saw him whispering to the yen in his hand. So, I took out my last yen and also whispered my wish. "I wish Deku finds better friends than me." With that, we both seemed to toss our wishes simultaneously.
As we continued walking through the park, we spotted our favorite snack cart. I kept walking, but I heard mumbling behind me. I looked back and saw how Deku had two fish snacks. He then held one out to me while looking away. I took it from him without a word, and we started walking again. The walk was quiet until we reached the corner between our homes. "Thank you, Kacchan."
I looked back at Deku. "What for?" The way the setting sun made him glow was breathtaking. It didn't help with that smile of his.
"Even though I don't get or understand what happened between us over the years. I am so grateful that we could have moments like this." His smile faded to a frown, and tears ran down his face. "Thank you for giving me hope." Before I could say anything, Deku ran towards his home. I was just stunned at what he just said. I gave him hope? That can't be true.

Second Hand Jewellery in Sydney: Get Affordable Pieces that Help your Create an Impression
The price is one of the main factors that the majority of us take into account while purchasing second hand jewellery in Sydney. We are constantly looking for something special, but it also needs to be within our price range. It goes without saying that purchasing new jewellery made of a precious metal like gold is expensive. On the other hand, you may save a lot of money by selecting used jewellery made of similar precious metals. It's crucial to realise that used jewellery doesn't necessarily indicate that it's been worn out.
Examine and Certify Jewellery Items
You may buy with confidence since every item of jewellery including accessories like second hand hermes scarf has undergone a thorough examination before being added to the pawnshop's inventory. Pawn shops check jewels for authenticity and worth before buying them from customers so you may buy them with confidence.
Jewellery is occasionally pawned in order to obtain quick cash. In the event that they are unable to repay the money, these objects remain with the jewellers. The pawnshop's reputation is maintained, and client happiness is ensured.
Avoid overpaying for jewellery when you can get it at a pawnshop you can trust for cheap rates and get the most of your money. With the large savings over retail stores that pawn shops give, you may get high-quality things in perfect condition without having to pay a premium price.
You Aid Local Enterprises
You support a neighbourhood business in your neighbourhood when you buy jewels from a pawn business in your area. Pawnshops, in contrast to many large chain jewellery stores, are locally owned and run enterprises. Residents can buy and sell items at pawn shops as needed.
By purchasing jewellery from the neighbourhood pawn store, you support the neighbourhood and the local economy. Due to the fact that they are a neighbourhood company, pawn shops care about your satisfaction with your jewellery transaction.
Before they wind up once more at a jewellerâs or pawn shop, a careful inspection of their quality is conducted. The customer often inspects the product's quality and purchases it. Once further processing is done to improve finishing.

Of Curses Broken and Breaking
@aldahi-rp
What?! He wanted to tear up Henryâs precious book!
Of course, Henry had pulled out a few pages himself, to show Emma and to keep them away from the evil queen, but that was different!
⊠Wasnât it?
Would his mom really do anything if she found out the dagger could be used to make someone the New Dark One?
She might! She probably didnât want to be the new Dark One Herself, but if she knew the dagger could control the Dark One⊠Or if she already had their heart and used their heart to make them stab someone and become the new Dark OneâŠ
And then what if she made them give her the dagger too? And then there would be a new Dark One in town and she would have their dagger AND their heart! What if she did it to Gram? Or Sydney maybeâŠ
Both of them kinda already did everything she said anyway, and Henry knew from the book she had Grams heart literally and Sydneyâs at least metaphorically.
"If my mom got the dagger, and forced someone to become the Dark One, and she had their heart and made them give her the dagger too- that could be really badâ Henry said very seriously.
âŠbut he still didnât relish the idea of Me. Gold ripping up his favorite book âŠ
"Anyone becoming the Dark One would be bad," Rumple said, "Which is why we need to protect that information."
That had been an easier secret to keep back in the Enchanted Forest, when hardly anyone knew that the dagger even existed. Anyone reading the book would learn about the dagger now, but they could at least keep anyone else from learning that they could use it to become the new Dark One.
But he could tell that Henry didn't like the idea of him tearing pages out of the book.
"I can remove the pages carefully, and bind them into a another, smaller book, that we can keep in the pawnshop," Rumple suggested. "It won't look like pages have been torn out, except for the page numbers not lining up. And you can still come here if you want to read that story again."
He hoped that Henry would he okay with that idea, because Rumple did not want to leave such dangerous information in the book, and risk Regina, or anyone else reading it.
Carefully removing the pages seemed like the best option. Rumple could keep the story safe in the pawnshop, like he was keeping the dagger safe.

The Real and Authentic Profitable Business of Pawn
The shop which is known to be pawn store would remain what the consumer, vendor, borrower, and small businessman take all profits. All will gain through each pawn store if they use it correctly. Since they require support later now, they could start taking another precious asset and exchange it for currency.Â
Pawn clients and their timelines:
Pawn shop will give clients a mortgage depending towards the quality of their piece, including the agreement that if they do not really make the payments by a certain deadline, the dealer shop would sell the product to others. When visiting a Pawn shop Sydney store during maybe the initial period, make prepared that schedule payment in the intended period.
Having started any pawn store has become the decent enterprise to open during a bad economy. Users have been selling on internet since the beginning of time. Pawnshops are quite well spread over the country. These could be purchased in whatsoever region's comparatively tiny but also big towns. That type of the store that are maintained successfully have excellent support to their clients.Â
Trustworthy Pawn Dealers:
Whenever that comes to making money together in market is the good place to start. Individuals can search for pawnbrokers Sydney, Pawn shop near me in most search of money will utilize some jewels and other such valued forms of wealth for really borrowing money from pawn dealers. Individuals may indeed reclaim that entire important property through refunding that borrowed funds from the lender towards the dealer.
Pawnshop owners operate an extremely attractive sector. In some kind of downturn or struggling environment, pawn shops may be a profitable investment way of managing stores. When financial institutions reject business loan requests in such an economic downturn, betting shops play an important part. Whenever a debt collector needs to move any pawn business the person must concentrate mostly in the following:
 Safe and Secure:
The dealers gathering paperwork on hand. The debt collector must carry identification as well as some government-issued license. Get enough employees. If some pawn dealer seems to be operating with large company, they may require a lot several employees to accommodate for customers. The normal individual in single handed cannot manage a large new corporation through their own. Pawnbrokers must hire but also select the knowledgeable team who can interact between customers quickly but efficiently as possible. But since Pawn shop near me works about expensive items, the person must hire only the most trustworthy individuals. Because any pawn dealer team is inexperienced, they must be trained initially.
Do a thorough assessment of the goods and assets. The advantageous or specific properties that consumers continue to use money dealer for double-checking. Most persons through attempt to defraud a debt collector while providing fake accessories and engaging in many various types of manipulation. As a result, pawn dealer may highlight that item appropriately to secure the person's interests. The quality along with its money lender is contingent also on employee's assessing the investments. The importance of careful assessment in raising successful finances cannot be overstated.

PROSTITUTION IN NINETEENTH CENTURY COLONIAL VICTORIA
In Victoria, prostitution was not illegal in the nineteenth century but while it was not encouraged it was tolerated as a necessity.[1] Those who called for legislative reform against the trade deemed it âThe Social Evilâ.[2] The colonial government took a regulative approach; establishing that prostitution could not be eradicated and thus had to be controlled in order to protect public health, safety and order.[3]Â
In the late nineteenth century the colony of Victoria was a people eager to discard its convict past and establish itself as society built on freedom and hard labour.[4] The famous little Lon district was located in the north-east of Melbourne where police relegated the cityâs prostitutes.[5] Although this was completely legal, vagrancy laws could see prostitutes arrested if they were deemed âdisorderlyâ, meaning they were drunk or stole from their clients, and brothel-keepers could face arrest for a âdisorderly houseâ if their employees and patrons behaved in the same manner.[6]Â
A unique characteristic of prostitution in this precise point in Victoriaâs history is the almost complete absence of male brothel owners and/or pimps.[7] Women who participated in this trade often did so out of necessity due to the insufficiently low wages of factory and domestic work.[8] It was not uncommon for women to resort to prostitution if they became widows or were deserted by their husband and left to financially support themselves and/or their children.[9]Â Although it was acknowledged that many began sex work due to financial difficulties, prostitutes were believed to possess âan inherent propensity to viceâ.[10]Â
Around the time Madame Brussels entered the scene, parliamentarian Thomas Bent claimed there were 2500 âabandoned femalesâ in Melbourne and its neighbouring suburbs and most were of European descent.[11] Amongst these a hierarchy of sorts existed, at the bottom were the common prostitutes who worked the cityâs taverns, wharfs and streets, and at the top, the women of the flash houses; elite brothels which attracted a wealthy clientele and provided a considerably better working environment.[12]Â
Nevertheless, all prostitution held enormous risks; sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhoea and syphilis were common, unreliable and harmful contraceptive methods often couldnât prevent unwanted pregnancies and women faced the threat of violence from clients and each other.[13] Even brothel keepers faced such dangers, like Annie Wilson who was âdealt blows on the mouth and chinâ by a drunken William Slavin after refusing him entry.[14]Â
The gold rush of 1851 saw an influx of diggers into the city of Melbourne and a large part of their earnings fed the female-dominated industry of prostitution.[15] Its uniquely gendered economy presented tremendous opportunities for women like Caroline Hodgson, enabling them to gain financial autonomy through the ownership and management of brothels.[16] Melbourneâs economy was undoubtably impacted by prostitution.[17] Women who worked both independently and in brothels required dresses and accessories, flash houses needed furniture, food and the social balm of alcohol thus a variety of businesses; pawnshops, butchers, greengrocers, jewellers, furniture traders, depended on the industry.[18] Prostitutes operated in a variety of establishments, from small laneway cottages to grand buildings on the main streets and thus placed a diverse range of demand on the Melbourne market.[19]

Penampilan perdana berlangsung mulus. Penonton puas dan memuji aksi Charlie dalam lakon berjudul âA Night in English Music Hall."
Dua tahun berikutnya, ketika Chaplin kembali ke Amerika, ia ditawari kontrak bermain film oleh Keystone Film Company. Pihak perusahaan menyodorkan gaji $150 per seminggu. Charlie pun mengiyakan. Kesempatan emas tak datang dua kali, demikian pikirnya.
Perlahan kariernya menanjak. Tahun-tahun itu, belasan judul film ia lakoni, misalnya The Floorwalker, The Fireman, The Vagabond, One A.M, The Count, The Pawnshop, The Rink, dan The Immigrant.
The Great Dictator berisikan soal olok-oloknya kepada Adolf Hitler, sementara Monsieur Verdoux terinspirasi dari kehidupan nyata penjahat Perancis Henri Désiré Landru.
Dua tahun setelah The Great Dictator rilis, Chaplin diundang menjadi pembicara utama di sebuah acara kelompok komunis di Carnegie Hall, New York.
Meski mengagumi komunisme, Chaplin menolak disebut komunis.

My Fiery Heart reread response (my Indigo Spell one here, my first-time Fiery Heart one here from 7.5 years ago)
before I get into it, I remembered looking up the Iolanthe coven name Sydney used; that wasnât something I looked up until after reading it the first time though, so I didnât realize the fairy court connection to Sydney recommending Zoe do her literature assignment on Midsummer Nightâs Dream... Iâm very certain it was an intentional reference to that opera now (even though the purple flower meaning was enough on its own)... if they get around to adapting this one, I half want to see Amberwood Prep put on a production of MNDÂ where Jill is helping with the costumes and Zoe gets to play Titania or something; I never got around to reading Richard IIIÂ (Zoeâs original pick) but itâs interesting that free will/fatalism is apparently a major theme, and that Richard contrived to have his brother Clarence sent to the Tower of London...
also, Iâm not sure if I cared about âWhite Rabbitâ by Jefferson Airplane all those years ago, but I got a thrill seeing it referenced this go around.
we get the first namedrop for Cicero (though we had heard about his propensity for killing birds and some other mention in the earlier BL books ETA, 7/19: âMy family had a cat back in Utah that I was pretty sure was more responsible than Angelineâ pg 31 TGL
Anyway, gosh Sydney makes bad decisions in this one. And itâs not because she has too much to do- she has no real outside strenuous challenges to protecting Jill or her group this go around. The friend group actually had to decide âyeah letâs go hunt down a Strigoi in LAâ for there to be a major action scene. I realize sheâs in her late teens and the burdens put on her are unfair, but sheâs a great example of someone who thrives under pressure and falls apart when sheâs given too much free time.
The switch to dual narrators was unnecessary. It wasnât bad, but it was clearly only to set up for the big cliffhanger at the end, and so feels a bit pointless in this one. Btw, Rose didnât lose her spirit link into Lissaâs mind after Lissa went on antidepressants. Now admittedly, the chemicals in Adrianâs mood stabilizers would have probably worked differently, or maybe Richelle was trying to retroactively make things more consistent (since alcohol could affect the bond), or maybe it was âAdrian and Jillâs bond is less established, so Jill canât break through like Rose couldâ... but the sudden decision mid book (with no repercussions- Adrian doesnât even bring it up to Sydney to be like âhey, one of your main concerns about having sex is taken care ofâ) is so pointless and really goes to the minimal page-time of the larger ensemble. I said it the first time I read the book, the absence of Kristin and Julia, and Micah, and even more important characters like Angeline or Trey is so frustrating. I realize Richelle couldnât write a book that was 900 pages long, but I would have gladly taken any of those characters instead of the completely unnecessary Terwilliger/Malachi romance. Especially to see Jillâs reaction to getting to be a more typical high school human, since I think she would have gotten even more attached to Amberwood than Sydney did. I also just... really, the Alchemists decided to have Sydneyâs bio sister on campus... pretending to be a cousin... while she was playing sister to Jill? I get they kind of backed themselves into a corner, but weird. That being said, I was happy to have Rowena and Cassie around. (give me Adrian and Rowena being wlw besties excellence to make me really happy)
Sydneyâs coven initiation taking place in chapter 2, then she meets Inez (who gives her the books on charms)... and we never see a witch other than Jackie again in this book? Honestly, why bother with writing the initiation at that rate? I still like the cloak they made Sydney though. On reread, thereâs the randomest bit where Treyâs like âis Neil even really Britishâ and I wonder if that was a dropped storyline where Neil was faking. Olive and Nina are still pleasant characters, and I liked that they had a âuniqueâ background, but knowing how those stories end was kind of a buzzkill on reread. Olive, especially, deserved better.
This is another one where I forgot quite a few events- Adrian getting drunk and the pawnshop (I think I remembered that obliquely, but not so much on it), or the trip to Texas (which actually came before the pawnshop but oh well). I was happy to finally get some actual Christian content again, although I regret we didnât get more from Sydney & Rose or more Sydney & Lissa. On Adrianâs mental health storyline... I am less impressed by it than I was the first time (though I didnât remember being super-impressed, but according to my first review?). I do actually like Adrian being insistent, once heâs started taking meds, that heâs going to continue, but the diagnosis of bipolar disorder doesnât actually feel like it fits? I will say, I find Adrianâs âchicken or eggâ pondering over whether spirit causes mental illness or mental illness means a predisposition to specializing in spirit is fascinating (though itâs probably for the best Richelle never actually answered it).
The way Adrian spoke (or thought) about Zoe really pissed me off. Like, one, youâre an adult, stop antagonizing the sister of the girl you like and just be cordial (which is less suspicious than suddenly acting like you and Sydney donât get along at all), and two... Adrianâs super protective over Sydney after realizing the emotional abuse Jared heaped on, but somehow doesnât realize that this fifteen year old has been spending time with said fatherâs attention solely focused on her for ages now, and he has no sympathy for her? Instead of seeing Zoe being like âSydney shouldnât have to provide for you all the timeâ and being like âaww, thatâs a nice protective sister instinct even if she needs an attitude adjustmentâ he taunts a 15 year old about drinking from her the way he did to 20-something actual-predator Keith. He could have engaged yet another Sage sister in talking about his awesome car on the drive over, or at least made other good faith efforts.
The dabbling stuff made me more uncomfortable this time around (I think). Especially Sydney comparing her getting Keithâs eye ripped out to Adrianâs assault of a human girl... that was some real false equivalency on Richelleâs part. But other parts of it, like âoh here comes Adrian to save the day and at least heâs changed from these guys he used to hang out with (oh, look at that convenient statement that even back in the day Adrian wasnât on the same level of bad as them)â was really frustrating, or the fact that Adrian was very deliberately withholding information from her in his own chapters and it made me question his trustworthiness in her chapters. Or the âoh, hey, he made the concession of getting treatment for his mental illness, so all is forgivenâ handwaving. Like, Richelle brought this in to be an obstacle to their relationship, but itâs addressed so quickly (with maybe a pittance effort of later being like âoh, at least Adrian didnât take advantage when Sydney accidentally absorbed some Moroi endorphins- he learned his lessons!) that it doesnât merit the actual consideration of so important a topic Idk. I do feel like I enjoy the Sydrian relationship more in this book than the others, but I also have some huge issues with it.
Adaptation-wise, I think genderbent Adrian would definitely mean a change to the dabbling storyline (yes, women can be sexual predators, but I donât think this storyline would be maintained with different social expectations). Honestly, give me an Adrian who, instead of having victimized someone, doesnât immediately fully grasp how upsetting this idea of vampires preying on her species (and risking exposure) is to Sydney... Adrian being like âit isnât sexual, those guys would never consider sleeping with a humanâ but the consent even to give blood still being critical to Sydney. And you know what? Let Lissa âcompelled a guy to almost hit himself over the head with a baseball bat for molesting a Feederâ Dragomir have a spirit freak out moment of rage and go off on these subjects of hers the way that was deserved (and then once she cools down, maybe she canât punish them fully, but she uses it to leverage their royal familiesâ agreement to the Family Rule amendment). And just finish that law by the end of the season, so that when the Alchemists pull out Sydney and Zoe, theyâre actually closing down the whole Palm Springs operation in a rage. (if I remember correctly Alicia kidnapped Jill between books 5 and 6, but that was a stupid plotline imo- let Sydney and her coven take care of Alicia in the downtime of this book instead) Let Rose figure out that Sydney and Adrian are in love- sheâs smart and she would pick up on that; let her celebrate them and encourage them to be happy together. Also the âSydney and Adrian get three days at an inn to sex it all upâ was stupid... like Iâm happy for them but am I really supposed to buy that they could afford all that time away from Palm Springs?
As bad as I feel for Syd, and Adrian, and Eddie, and Jill, and Jackie at the end of TFH, I do remember that Iâm going to feel worst for Hopper. Iâm sorry that demon dragon Calistana has my heart and I remember one scene from Silver Shadows featuring the little guy prominently...

Cape Breton man gets emotional after reunion with long-lost guitar
A man in Cape Breton, N.S. has been reunited with one of his guitars that was stolen almost 20 years ago when his home was broken into.
He says the loss was devastating.
"It was hard, and when we didn't recover it right away, I completely gave up on it. I never thought I'd see it again," said Shawn Bigley, who is the original owner of the guitar.
Although Bigley gave up on the search, his son did not.
He was able to search and track down the instrument, which he then gifted to his father this week as a surprise birthday present.
"I cried, I'm not going to lie. I went through a whole wave of emotions when I saw it," said Bigley.
Bigley says the guitar was originally a Christmas gift from his wife of six months, making the sentimental value of the instrument irreplaceable.
According to Bigley, his son recently saw the guitar for sale and knew it was his father's thanks to distinctive marks it has. Â
"It has a crack in it. When I was playing years ago in a choir, I turned one way and somebody else turned the other way and their strap hit the top of my guitar and it put a very distinctive crack in it, so that's how we knew for sure it was the guitar," explained Shawn. "When I saw that crack, a whole lot of memories came flooding back."
Bigley says he's still unsure where the guitar ended up after it was stolen, but he says the recent owner's parents purchased it at a pawnshop in Sydney, N.S.
"This is at least two people that learned to play on this guitar and maybe somebody else will see this and realize it has gone through their hands too," said Shawn. "I guess this guitar's reason for being is so people could learn how to play on it. It's kind of cool it made its way back to me."
