Patti Smith and Her Dedication To David
On this day in 2014, the iconic rock-n-roll queen Patti Smith (who's celebrating her 77th birthday today, by the way) dedicated her song "Distant Fingers" to David Tennant. Which makes me even happier when the first thing he said to me when I told him my name and spelled it so he could sign an autograph, he asked me, "Oh, like Patti Smith?" Yes, sir, exactly like that! For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, let me elaborate. I don't know how often she did it on her 2014 tour, but I know that on 29 December 2014 at New York's Webster Hall, she had a talk with her audience (watch at the link) before singing her song "Pumping (My Heart)," and described how David first caught her attention for his role as Alec Hardy in Broadchurch. Then, after catching him by accident in Doctor Who, she ended up watching his entire run as the Tenth Doctor, and - predictably, because DUH! - fell head over heels for him.
The following night, again at Webster Hall, was her birthday. That night she dedicated another of her songs, "Distant Fingers" - from her 1976 album, Radio Ethiopia - to David. You can watch that here - and I'd advise you to watch it in its entirety, as she begins to riff at the end of the song and talks about David:
youtube
And oh, just in case you're having difficulty understanding her words, or English isn't your first language, here are some of the lyrics to the song:
When, when will you be landing? When, when will you return? Feel, feel my heart expanding You and your alien arms
All my earthly dreams are shattered I'm so tired, I quit Take me forever, it doesn't matter Deep inside of your ship
La, la, la, la, la, la, landing Please, oh, oh, won't you return? Feel, see your blue lights are flashing You and your alien arms
Deep in the forest I whirl like I did as a little girl Let my eyes rise in the sky looking for you Oh, you know, I would go anywhere at all 'Cause no star is too far with you, with you....
Keeping in mind she wrote this song in 1976, the lyrics fit David's turn as the Tenth Doctor with eerie clairvoyance!
And because she is the queen she is, she adds a sly little comment: "So come for me, David. I know I'm an older woman, but I know so many things."
One wonders what David thought about this. I've no doubt someone in his circle alerted him to Patti's dedication, because how could they not? And as an aside - his interaction with me about Patti Smith was about nine months before she did this dedication to him. So not only was he aware of her as the music connoisseur he is, the fact her name sprung immediately to his mind when speaking to me has always made me think he's a fan.
He probably blushed. Deeply. Well played, Patti. Well played.

Same Old Fire
Sirius/Remus, Explicit, 8k, Illustrated!!!!
Sirius gently banged his forehead against the cold glass of Remus's bedroom window for the umpteenth time. He didn't have a watch, but he'd guess he had been out here for thirty minutes. Maybe an hour, god, it felt like ages. He briefly considered the possibility that he'd lost all sense of time and had been standing out here for years, his skin prickling with the cold and his boots squishily attempting not to smother Remus's mother's newly budding daffodils in the mud. He thought, perhaps it would have been wise to wear a watch because the decades he was spending in this garden were beginning to feel unbearable.
That's not even to mention the hours — nine of them — that it took to get from the center of London to Glasgow on a motorcycle that seemed determined to undermine him at every step, and left him having to pull a detour halfway through the journey in search of a replacement tyre in Who-Knows-Where, England, as well as some replacement patience, which was unfortunately harder to get a hold of.
He banged his forehead against the window again. It was a delicate balance. He needed to strike just the correct pitch and tone of knock to wake up Remus two days post-full moon while simultaneously not waking up his parents (or anyone else in the neighborhood, ideally). Frankly, there was also the minor issue of whether Remus was in his bedroom to begin with, something that, if at this point turned out not to be the case, would lead Sirius to committing unspeakable crimes. He was fairly certain he was in there. Where else would he be? It made the most sense.
This time he let his head roll back on his shoulders, groaned in frustration at the sky, and knocked at a medium volume with his knuckles.
"Moooooon—ouch, fuck!" He yanked his hand back as the window slid open and raked his knuckles against the lip. He put his sore knuckle into his mouth but grinned around it at the sight of the familiar lanky torso hovering in the darkness inside of the room. In the moonlight, he could just make out the Patti Smith logo on his T-shirt, and, more obviously, the exhausted demeanor of his posture. "Moony! Fucking finally, do you know how long I've been out here?! I was about to give up." Maybe in another half hour.
"Sirius?" Remus's voice sounded rough with sleep, surprised. "What are you…how did you know I was—?"
"Would you let me in, I'm freezing my arse off." Sirius said, and turned around to pick a helmet and two brightly wrapped presents from the grass behind him. He shoved them through the open window into Remus's arms.

That's 114 contenders! Amazing job everyone!
we got 323 submissions and labored over every single one until approximately 2am, which is why this bracket looks so fucking incomprehensible. (shoutout to tumblr user asparagoos for creating The Milves Rubric and user pastramis, who plays fantasy football and knows brackets.)

another terrible playlist round-up
i think i'll just do these periodically every few months! as of last year i started archiving my own physical collection (including borrowing from libraries and friends) and have moved away from streaming music entirely. i cannot in good consciousness continue paying for streaming services and dislike how their algorithms have impacted my own media habits, especially in regards to music (another post for another time, i'm saving for my blogspot)
that said, that's just for me. i've been making these in foobar2000 and putting them on spotify for ease of access to everyone else!
2024 release radar - i do these every year. to the best of my ability, collecting almost everything i discover in one year. artists i already enjoy and any of the new discoveries in between.
hangover remedy - what the title says! featuring some kelala, carly rae jepsen, IU, taeyeon, pinkpantheress and slowdive. easy starts to the morning after a night out but enough to wake you up.
me when i can't just rot in bed all day - my partner and i collaborated on this one. songs for when you just want to rot in bed all day. featuring the likes of faye webster, airiel, chelsea wolfe, title fight, superheaven, mbv. a great little snapshot of our separate tastes.
me time - i think i was writing a story about a young woman who realises she's a werewolf trapped in a castle and i have no idea where i was going with that, but here's the playlist. vibes are all over the place. featuring patti smith, joan baez, liz phair, soho rezanejad, fiona apple, abba.
lighter than air - a fun playlist that i like to listen to for background noise for cooking, editing, working from home. a little on the nu metal side of things, with other 90s bands i like. featuring: sunk loto, rina sawayama, sugar ray, limp bizkit, nine inch nails.
whatever, go my scarab! - songs for cursing your enemies with a plague of scarabs. featuring riders of rohan (my favourite discovery last year - yes it's another Tolkien metal band but they also sound like the B-52's and i kind of think it's campy brilliance), doro, motorhead, helm's deep, bathory, king diamond. you get the drift.
tobias forge's RAGE abc guest programmer playlist - yes it's not mine but he picked a great selection of tracks. really loved the 3am-4am "just fuck me up" section that featured ABBA, the black eyed peas, daft punk, lenny kravitz and bruce springsteen back to back. if that isn't a mood at those hours of the day i don't know what is.

John Giorno Interview: Inside William S. Burroughs' Bunker
Step inside ‘The Bunker’ in New York, the windowless former apartment of the legendary writer William S. Burroughs, and let yourself be guided around – from Burroughs’ typewriter to his shooting target – by its the current resident, the iconic poet John Giorno (b.1936 - d.2019). William S. Burroughs lived several places throughout his life. Between 1975-82 the drug addict and writer –famous not least for his automatic writing in books like ‘Naked Lunch’– lived in 222 Bowery, one of New York’s first YMCAs in the 1880s. Performance poet John Giorno has lived at the address since the early 1960s and was delighted to host his friend and colleague, who lived in the basement for seven years and dubbed the windowless space ‘The Bunker’. “ He was a brilliant transcendent writer, but he was more brilliant here,” Giorno recalls and explains how Burroughs was high from nine in the morning, and then would have vodkas and joints at five o’clock in the afternoon. Giorno himself would join him, albeit a bit later in the day: “Doing that for those endless years and years, that was a lesson – not sure what the lesson is though.” Having downed several more bottles of vodka and smoked more joints, Burroughs and his guests would shoot at the target poster, which still has its original bullet holes. John Giorno has been using ‘The Bunker’ as a guest room for visiting friends and today everything has been restored and kept like it was when Burroughs lived there: the target poster, the typewriter, the gun magazines and the desk all set for someone to sit down and write. We also get to see the ‘Orgone box’ – a box invented by psychoanalyst William Reich, who believed that orgones are vibratory atmospheric atoms of the life-principle, which can be concentrated as a creative substratum. “And if you sat in there you would collect orgone energy of the universal power,” Giorno adds. Burroughs “always believed there could be chaos and catastrophe, so every house should have a vessel to be able to save enough water to live for four days. So that’s why that was there,” says Giorno about the big water tank on the floor. Giorno also shows us Burroughs’ lamp, which is made from a – still functioning – rifle from the Civil War, as well as his BB gun: “It's a generational thing of his, coming of age as a young person in the 1920s and 30s, living in the country in St. Louis, and also outside, and being alone and being frail. I don't think his family were shooters, somehow it entered his life, all of those things.” John Giorno (b.1936 - d.2019) is an American poet and one of the most influential figures in contemporary performance poetry with his intensely rhythmic and philosophical poetry. He has published a wide range of poetic works such as the collection ‘You Got to Burn to Shine’, spoken words with William S. Burroughs and Laurie Anderson. In 1962, Giorno was the subject of Andy Warhol’s 6-hour movie ‘Sleep’. Giorno has also created Giorno Poetry Systems, which has published more than 40 spoken LP’s with acclaimed artists such as Allen Ginsberg and Patti Smith. William S. Burroughs (b. William Seward Burroughs II in 1914 – d. 1997) was an American writer and artist. He was a primary figure of the Beat Generation and a major influence in popular culture and literature, he wrote eighteen novels and novellas, six collections of short stories and four collections of essays, found success with his confessional first novel ‘Junkie’ (1953) but is best known for his highly controversial third novel ‘Naked Lunch’ (1959).  Along with artist, writer and poet Brion Gysin, Burroughs re-invented the literary cut-up technique in works such as ‘The Nova Trilogy’ (1961-1964). Much of Burroughs’ work is semi-autobiographical, primarily drawn from his experiences as a heroin addict. In 1951, he accidentally killed his wife Joan Vollmer with a pistol during a drunken ‘William Tell’ game and was consequently convicted of manslaughter. Through the years, Burroughs also created and exhibited thousands of paintings and other visual artworks, including his celebrated ‘Gunshot Paintings’. He did not, however, exhibit his artwork until 1987, and for last 10 years of his life, he presented his paintings and drawings at museums and galleries worldwide. He died at his home in Kansas after suffering a heart attack in 1997. John Giorno was interviewed by Christian Lund in New York City in October 2017.  Copyright: Louisiana Channel, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, 2018

I have a question about rie. I know she has a lot of alternate names/aliases, but I’m not really sure on who uses what name, if that makes sense? Like, do specific people call her certain things? Oh! And does L have any cute nicknames for her?
-🎲
Aliases ╾ Rie
YIPPEE!!!!?!!
Any excuse to drag Rie onto main 🩷 and to procrastinate on my other drafts...
 ★━━─・‥…━━━☆
I'll organise by the basic rule: the main reason she has so many aliases is to help blend in – depending on the country. It won't work everywhere, of course. So, country - names - about the name - nicknames - about the nicknames.
╾ JAPAN
please note: the kanji in brackets are ordered last name - first name, as is typical in Japanese names. So Rie is not 高村 but rather 理恵.
Rie Takamura (高村理恵). I picked this because Rie is a fairly common name for girls meaning "reason". As for Takamura, it's like most common Japanese surnames in that it's somewhat geographical. Specifically, it means "high up village."
Hina Suzuki (鈴木陽菜). I actually don't know the exact meaning, but I didn't pick it for that: Hina and Suzuki are incredibly common names (think John Smith). It has the anonymity of Jane Doe.
Nicknames: Riri (by me; maybe by Matsuda and/or Misa). Miss Rie-san (by L. two honorifics...). Rie Pie (by "Matty Beef Patty" and "Mello Jello," because they got cross at her and decided to give her a taste of her own medicine. She's soooo pissed off that it doesn't rhyme).
╾ USA, UK, CANADA, AUSTRALIA etc...
Rue Dixon. I'm not sure if I ought to add a middle name. Rue I picked simply because it sounded similar to Rie (I didn't pick her real name, or even that she was French, until later. That probably sounds weird, but my creative process is too I guess..) and – come on. The meaning is so cool. Later, I learned BB uses it as an alias, which I'm just going to play into MWAHAHA (sobs). As for Dixon, it's after Elizabeth née Dixon, mother of Mary Wollstonecraft, mother of Mary Shelley.
Nicknames: um, Rue... (by Naomi. The "um" is a permanent fixture/hj). This is her name throughout Another Note.
╾ FRANCE
Reinette Rose Descôteaux (real name. how dramatic are her parents (me)). I struggled picking this name. I speak English (unbelievably) and I've been studying Japanese for a long time, but I've never really touched French up until developing Rie. I just picked something that sounded nice and didn't have an objectionable meaning for her first name. I kind of stomped over the fact middle names are uncommon in France and patched it up with the fact some kids have, like, dual first names (I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm thinking of things like Marie-Belle). As for Descôteaux, HOPEFULLY, it means something to do with gardens.
Aurélie Rousseau. I don't have any plans to use this one in RieCanon so far – perhaps in proLogue: 1429. Same process as above with the first name. Rousseau came up in my sociology class along with a couple of other white dead guys, and I thought the name sounded nice and Rie-ish.
Nicknames: Reine-Rose (L. He pronounces it wrong, pretty much just to annoy her. "Rainy rose" instead of "rehn rose"). Rosey (by L, about twice a year, when he feels cutesy). Pétalette (by her parents. I'm still figuring out Rie's childhood).
╾ INTERNATIONAL
1429 (fourteen twenty-nine). This is a real alias Rie goes by, even though it's not a name, and it's her main title throughout my fan made prequel arc. I don't remember how exactly I picked the number, but I like it.
Nicknames: Cat (by L, strictly once. She calls him mouse for a good while).
╾ OTHER
Rie goes by "L" a lot too. It's an agency more than a person. I feel like I read that somewhere, but there's an equal chance I made it up... Anyway, she does most of the PR stuff, and takes over if L gets sick or if she knocks him out to get some rest.
I've recently decided (this is an edit to the original post) that Rie is half Korean. She was born in France, but her dad (Korean, her mother is French) wanted to give her a Korean name as well, so here it is: 문영지, or Mun Yeong-ji. I probably messed something up, but I liked the sound of Mun and it's a fairly common surname. Yeong means shadow/reflection/photograph, and Ji means intelligence. Also considering the nickname YeonYeon by her father but idk what that means in Korean so I'll have to make sure it isn't anything weird, haha.
I'm trying to figure out if she went to Wammy's, or if there was time for her to meet the kids between 1429 and LABB, or something else. If she went, she'd go by Q or maybe X. I think different kids left at different times, so different letters opened up at different times. It's the simplest explanation I can think of, though I must admit it still doesn't answer everything. What is that again? Occam's razor?
 ★━━─・‥…━━━☆
character ©lawlietscaramels , ©dailyreine , ©riexliet. Though Rie has been inserted into Ohba Tsugumi's Death Note universe, her design, character, and non canon related storyline are all my own original work. Do not steal her design, claim her as your own, use her for “inspiration” — it's flattering but it often ends up a copy, feed any part of her (story/art) to AI, or do anything else unethical or immoral.
