What confuses me is that we've seen people interacting on Laterano's streets. They're carefree, uninhibited, and goofy. Federico's sainting is celebrated by a pie-throwing contest. Sankta passerby are anything but aloof.

Civil servants in the government do tend to be more reserved, Liberi as well as Sankta. But the pope and cardinals will openly mock each other's tastes in desserts.

But while we've seen Liberi citizens on the street, and Liberi civil servants, we perhaps haven't gotten the most cohesive look at the life of Liberi associated with the armed forces.

Fiammetta was raised by Apostolic Gun Knights, was part of the Pontiff's Cohort, and after her team fell apart she refused to becoming an Apostolic Knight, instead joining the Notarial Hall to work with Mostima.

We know less of Patia's and Plume's childhoods and careers in the Pontiff's Cohort. Except that Plume struggled to pass the entrance requirements and may have been shortly discharged.

Yeah, this reads differently with a clearer picture of Laterano, and let me just say, It doesn't paint a good picture of Laterano's cultural norms.

The first time I read these files nothing really stuck out to me. It's an insular religious country and she was in the military. Things being regimented and ritualized is to be expected, and so is a general lack of awareness of other cultures. Sure, Plume didn't have a life outside of work, but that's not a particularly rare trait for a person to have.

What I missed the first time, was the references to an "aloof aristocracy", and the general framing of the traits being described not as Plume's but as a Laterano Guard's.

Why learn about the outside world if you're already living in paradise? What other pursuits could be more worthy of your time than defending it?

What I missed the first time, is that Plume is surprised that finding herself surrounded by foreign cultures is "not so bad."

Rewatching through EXU Calamity and I just want to give big props to Marisha and Aabria for going so hard on the “rip to that other guy but I’m different” vibes that the Age of Arcanum was overflowing with.

The ladies find a letter written in plain and simple language that essentially says ���Wizards can’t be trusted with knowledge because they’re too ambitious so I won’t tell you what the tree does” and immediately went “well maybe not those ambitious wizards but we’re totally different ambitious wizards who definitely know what we’re doing and are so much better and cooler that we’ll definitely be able to handle what we find!”

The arrogance, the drama, the self-centered hubris of it all—god I wish we had more time with these two ego-maniacs!
