Death Rattle
Kita knew what was about to happen. He could feel the sour pit in his stomach the moment he received the text from Satoru.
I'm coming to see you.
No emojis, no stupid gifs, no questions.
He stood at the threshold of his front door. Suguru hadn't left his side, purring loudly as he pressed his soft head against Kita's shin. No. He couldn't give in just yet. Hold it together.
He could feel the sorcerer coming before he even saw him. Satoru had walked. Hold it together. The shock of white hair came into view at the end of the path from the front gate and Kita swore he could throw up. He didn't wear his blindfold, opting for those stupid glasses of his. Those stupid glasses. Kita stares, dark eyes wide and aimed straight ahead. He doesn't hear Satoru say his name the first time, the ringing in his ears too loud.
"Kita," he repeats and Kita jerks, gaze finally meeting Satoru's.
His glasses are off.
"Don't," Kita croaks, a plead, a beg.
"I had to."
"Don't."
"He came to the school. He attacked my students."
"Shut up."
Hold it together.
"Kita."
"Stop it," his voice breaks hard, "stop it."
"Geto Suguru has been pronounced dead, Kita."
I can't.
Kita is on him before he can even think, he hits Satoru hard, cursed energy flailing out, claws carving into Satoru's cheek. Blood splatters the path, but he doesn't flinch. Kita realizes that Satoru let him hit him and the dam breaks.
Kita grabs him by the collar and shakes him, something no one should be able to do, and maybe if Kita was in his right mind he'd realize how big of a deal this was.
"Shut up! Shut up!" Kita screams, tears pouring so heavily down his cheeks he can't see anymore.
His legs give out, and Satoru, bless him, doesn't let him fall alone. He wraps Kita up and holds him there on the pathstones of his front yard until the younger man's screams turn to scratchy sobs turn to gasps.
The black domestic long haired cat sits beside the two, watching.

Cabin
Deep in the lush green forests of Ravenvale there stands a dilapidated log cabin dripping in vines and moss. Much of the dark wood is covered in lichen and tree fungus. Sun-bleached roof tiles that look like they may have once been red contrast with the dark of the green trees at the edge of the clearing. A path of cracked, grey stones leads to a weather-worn door with a dull brass knob and bell. In the alcove by the door sit dirty plant pots and glass jars filled with dirt; rotted plant holders sway in time with a pair of wind chimes by the door. A set of lanterns hang on chains and hooks in the alcove, their glass walls cracked and sooty.
Tall grass wraps around a carriage that looks like it may have once been expensive, but now is little more than torn fabric and warped wood. Thistles add pops of colour to the seas of green and brown. What once was a group of raised garden beds is now just rotten wood and weeds. A large spruce tree stands proud in the center of the clearing, offering shade to any who sit under it. When the wind blows through its branches a sound like laughing children rings out, even when there is not a child in sight.
A large pond glitters in the sun. The white sand of its shore is warm and soft, the cold water glints blue and reveals the only clean area of the clearing. Along one side of the pond grows pond grass and reeds that sway in time with the trees.
Few have seen the cabin during the day, and even fewer have seen it at night. No one has seen it during both day and night, leading many to believe that there must be two cabins, for how else could the stories be so different? The Day Cabin is old and falling apart, and the Night Cabin is lively and well taken care of.
The Night Cabin is covered I moonflowers and wisteria. Clean wooden walls with glowing windows cast light over the clearing. Shadows dance and play in the windows, children and adults mingling. Outside, the clearing is filled with raucous laughter and smiling faces.
The dark wood of the house looks new, the roofing tiles a vibrant red-orange, none of the pathstones are cracked. The door’s intricate designs are no longer cracked and warped. Brass gleams in the lantern light, shiny and new. The mismatched plant pots and glasses all contain a variety of flowers and ferns, and the chimes sing merrily in the brisk night breeze.
The grass of the clearing reaches no higher than a child's ankles and is dotted with a colourful array of flowers. The carriage sits I the clearing, sleek wood covered with shiny black fabric. A spruce tree is being climbed by a group of children who laugh and taunt each other.
The pond water glints sapphire in the moonlight, endlessly deep and smooth. Occasionally, a pair of lovers will be spotted on the beach, embracing in the moonlight.
If someone goes missing from the village, usually a child or one of the elderly, the next time the Night Cabin is spotted, so are they. They wave their final goodbye, then turn and join the rest of the people there, disappearing from view. The village elders say it is the final resting place of the wistful and innocent, and that all in the village will one day join the people of the cabin.

Transforming America’s Landscape: From Retail Ruins to Residential Revival.
Imagine the vast, empty corridors of America’s abandoned malls, once bustling hubs of commerce and community. Now picture these spaces teeming with life anew, not with shoppers, but with families and individuals calling them home. This is not just a vision; it’s a viable solution to our nation’s pressing housing crisis.
Amy Casciani, a visionary in real estate development, has witnessed the struggle to find new housing solutions firsthand. Her journey began in a quaint suburb of Rochester, New York, where a mall once stood as a symbol of prosperity and a haven for the youth. Its decline, mirroring a nationwide shift in retail habits, left a void not only in the landscape but in the spirit of Irondequoit.
Refusing to let her community succumb to the blight of abandonment, Casciani’s nonprofit, PathStone, took on an ambitious endeavor. They transformed the derelict Sears store into a vibrant residential complex, Skyview Park Apartments, offering 73 rental apartments and an additional 84 units in a newly erected building. This sanctuary now provides affordable living spaces, especially for seniors in need, complete with supportive services.
“Why not repurpose the resources already at our disposal?” Casciani challenges us. “Why not convert these relics of retail into beacons of hope for the community?”
As the affordable housing crisis escalates, the innovative conversion of malls, particularly strip malls with their expansive parking lots, presents a unique opportunity. A recent study by Enterprise Community Partners projects that such transformations could introduce over 700,000 new homes nationwide.
Let’s embrace this creative reimagining of our urban spaces. Join the conversation and explore the full story at Vox: https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/24075581/housing-conversions-stripmalls-affordable-supply

FARMWORKERS’ COVID-19 PANDEMIC RELIEF FUND
Justice for Migrant Women and other farmworker-serving organizations are raising immediate funds to help keep farmworker families safe from COVID-19 as they work to feed us.
Who is this fund for?
An estimated two to three million farmworkers feed us through their labor, bringing fruits, vegetables and other crops to homes across the nation. As the country is learning, their work is critical, yet they and their work have not been properly valued.
Why was the fund created?
The COVID-19 pandemic is expanding into rural America, and these communities may be among the hardest hit due to their demographics and lack of resources. Justice for Migrant Women (J4MW) and other farmworker-serving partner organizations are gravely concerned about the health and welfare of the farmworker community, their families and the security of our entire food supply. It is our hope that farmworkers are not forgotten or left behind.
How will these funds be used?
In addition, J4MW has joined with HIP to raise funds to address the immediate needs of the farmworker community and mitigate the risks of the pandemic. Now, more than ever, farmworkers need our support during these uncertain times. All funds raised will go directly to farmworkers to help them purchase basic needs for their families, like groceries and hygienic supplies; pay for utilities and other expenses; and assistance to offset medical costs and to aid in purchasing medical supplies.
In addition, to help limit the impact of the virus on the farmworker community, acclaimed fashion designer Mario De La Torre has teamed up with J4MW, Hispanic Heritage Foundation, and the National Center for Farmworker Health to launch the #Masks4Farmworkers campaign, which will sew tens of thousands of masks so that farmworkers and healthcare professionals who serve them have much-needed protective wear in order to safely perform their jobs.
How will the funds be distributed?
Our partner organizations, such as the Coalition of Florida Farmworker Organizations (FL), Dolores Huerta Foundation, East Coast Migrant Head Start Project (Multi-state), Farmworker Association of Florida (FL), The United Farm Workers Foundation (CA, WA), Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noreste (PCUN) (OR), Redlands Christian Migrant Association (RCMA) (FL), Pathstone (Multi-state), NC Fields (NC), La Cooperativa Campesina de California (CA), Proteus, Inc. (Multi-state), Student Action with Farmworkers (NC), Telamon Corporation (Multi-state), UMOS (WI, MN) and La Union del Pueblo Entero (TX) will receive money from this collective fund to help provide farmworker community members with much-needed resources and goods to meet their basic needs.
Please support:
Please donate $25 today to help support the farmworkers who feed our nation. Checks can be mailed made payable to Hispanics In Philanthropy with Farmworkers’ Pandemic Relief Fund written in the check memo line. Please mail checks to 414 13th Street, Suite 200, Oakland, CA 94612
Farmworkers do life-sustaining work and put their lives and health at risk by continuing to work in the fields during the COVID-19 pandemic. I am thanking them through my donation to the Farmworkers Pandemic Relief Fund. Join me in showing our gratitude and support today!

Old People Housed in Former Malls Afraid of the Sky
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/24/business/senior-housing-retail-redevelopment.html
(…)
There is little denying that a vast amount of retail space is emptying during the coronavirus pandemic — 25,000 stores may close by the end of this year — all while the over-65 population is increasing by about 10,000 a day. So even though arena-like malls and strip shopping centers might never see another Sears, J.C. Penney or Lord & Taylor store, some are being transformed into something more interesting: comprehensive upscale retirement complexes.
(…)
The factors driving retail-to-housing transformation were set in motion years ago but have been accelerated by the pandemic. The demise of malls and shopping centers has also been amplified by the shift to online retailing in recent years.
The crisis in mainstream retailing has become an outsize challenge and opportunity for municipalities, real estate owners, managers and developers. More than 8,000 stores have closed so far in 2020, according to Coresight Research, after 9,500 shut down last year. Mall stalwarts like Bed Bath & Beyond, GNC, Pier One Imports, Men’s Wearhouse, and New York and Company are in various states of bankruptcy and reorganization. Department stores such as Neiman Marcus and Lord & Taylor are on a long list of retailers going through shutdowns.
Ellen Dunham-Jones, a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, has researched the repurposing trend. Retail closings across the country have led to 400 proposals for retrofits, with some 315 projects completed or in progress. Notable examples include the Ridge House Apartments in Wheat Ridge, Colo.; the PathStone Skyview Park Apartments in Irondequoit, N.Y. (occupying an old Sears site); and Aljoya Thornton Place, on the former parking lot of the Northgate Mall in Seattle, which was one of the nation’s first regional shopping malls and is still in business.
Professor Dunham-Jones writes about Folkestone in “Case Studies in Retrofitting Suburbia,” her upcoming book with Prof. June Williamson of City University of New York. She noted that the complex, in addition to occupying a former retail site, took a more progressive turn in its design.
Seniors are increasingly demanding more activities and environmentally sensitive and walkable communities, rather than sequestered, gated or golf course developments that require driving everywhere, Professor Dunham-Jones found.
“Baby boomers don’t want to be isolated,” she added. “They want to be connected to the community.”...

Rocket Lab launches smallsat rideshare mission

Rocket Lab launches smallsat rideshare mission
Tumblr media
WASHINGTON — Rocket Lab launched six smallsats for a variety of commercial and government customers March 22 on a mission also intended to demonstrate the performance of its own smallsat bus.
The company’s Electron rocket lifted off from Launch Complex 1 at Mahia Peninsula, New Zealand, at 6:30 p.m. Eastern. The rocket deployed its kick stage eight and a half minutes after liftoff and, after a 40-minute coast, fired its Curie engine for nearly two minutes. Four minutes later, it deployed five payloads into a 550-kilometer circular orbit inclined at 45 degrees.
The kick stage performed two more firings of its Curie engine before releasing the sixth payload into a 450-kilometer orbit 1 hour and 49 minutes after liftoff.
The largest payload on the launch was a Gen-2 satellite for satellite imaging company BlackSky, the seventh in that series of spacecraft that produce high-resolution imagery. It was the satellite deployed to the lower orbit.
The launch also carried two 6U cubesats built by Tyvak Nano-Satellite Systems for two separate Australian companies developing internet-of-things satellite constellations: Myriota 7 for Myriota and Centauri 3 for Fleet. In addition to providing internet-of-things services, Centauri 3 will test technologies for a proposed lunar smallsat mission being studied by a team of Australian companies.
The other three smaller satellites were Gunsmoke-J, a 3U cubesat developed by the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC) whose launch was arranged by TriSept, and 1U technology demonstration satellites by Care Weather Technologies and the University of New South Wales Canberra Space.
The Gunsmoke-J satellite attracted the most attention, and controversy, in New Zealand because of concerns raised by some organizations there that the satellite could be used by the U.S. military for targeting weapons, specifically nuclear weapons. Those groups, as well as New Zealand’s Green Party, asked the government to suspend licenses granted by the New Zealand Space Agency for Gunsmoke-J and other U.S. military payloads.
SMDC describes Gunsmoke-J as a demonstration of technologies “that could assist the ground force commander in long-range precision fires and other activities.” The spacecraft will test the ability to provide imagery directly to troops in the field. The New Zealand government took no steps to halt the launch.
In addition to deploying the six satellites, the mission will test the company’s Photon satellite bus, which is based on the kick stage. The “Photon Pathstone” will be the second such test of Photon after its “First Light” mission launched in August 2020. Those tests, the company said, will test systems needed for launching NASA’s CAPSTONE lunar smallsat mission later this year.
The launch was the first for Rocket Lab since it announced March 1 its intent to go public through a merger with Vector Acquisition Corporation, a special-purpose acquisition corporation. That deal, expected to close in the second quarter, will provide Rocket Lab with about $750 million in capital and value the company at $4.1 billion. The company announced at the same time its intent to develop Neutron, a medium-class launch vehicle.
In an interview during the company’s webcast of the launch, Peter Beck, chief executive of Rocket Lab, offered no updates on either the SPAC deal or development of Neutron. He did say that Rocket Lab’s next attempt to recover an Electron first stage was “not too many missions away.” The company recovered the first stage from an Electron launch for the first time in November.
That upcoming launch, he said, will include upgrades such as a more robust heat shield at the base of the rocket. “We’re expecting much better performance and hopefully much better condition of the stage when we go pick it back up.”

Werewolf is a goddamn Hoot sometimes, I can't stop thinking about the "End Times" chron I'm in with @noctuafoxglove and @antipathiczora
So a loose group of mostly Red Talons/Black Furies in Yellowstone found an ancient, forbidden rite in a forgotten caern, and enacted it, which took 14 days and killed half those participating from exhaustion. It made giant primeval forest sprout up and destroy half of North America, from northern Mexico to Vancouver and slowly spreading.
The pack (Glass Walker Ragabash, Black Fury Theurge, Child of Gaia Galliard) is from Vancouver island, which is mostly untouched and also in chaos at the moment, local septs struggling to hold refugees and get pathstones for moon bridges. They meet with the totem of the brand new caern they're staying at... which is Carl Sagan, who is extremely confused by all this. They have to go petition the incarna of the planet Saturn to be their pack totem, so they can find a way to fix the Fuckoff Huge Tree Patch that's eating the continent.
Absolutely wild.

Introducing Our Interns - Meet Lakshmi!
Name: Lakshmi Meyyappan
Position: Intern
Tumblr media
Where do you go to school and how did you decide your major?
I attend the University of Michigan, where I’m majoring in Public Health Sciences, and minoring in Business and Music. I found my interests aligning with Public Health through its focus on factors affecting an individual/community’s health outside of a hospital. What I love about this field is that it’s largely interdisciplinary – it not only has a focus on the natural sciences, but also emphasizes the role of data analytics, social justice, and many other important subjects that influence one’s health. I chose the minor in Business because as someone who has always been interested in pursuing a health-related career, I knew that having this technical background would allow me to understand the operations of the healthcare field better. I’ve been playing the violin from a young age, and I wanted to continue with my performance experience, so I chose to minor in Music as well.
Why are you interested in healthcare consulting?
Coming from a clinical background, I wanted to explore more of the business and operational side of hospitals. What I really like about healthcare consulting is that it’s at the intersection between public health and business, and the end goal is to improve the quality and affordability of healthcare. I was drawn to the idea that we could use analytical skills to improve operations of hospitals, which would consequently improve patient outcomes. There are many ways to make an impact on how our healthcare system operates, and I wanted to learn more about the management aspect, which is where I believe a lot of change can happen.
What stood out to you most about Pathstone during the interviewing process? What made you interested in doing an internship here?
What stood out to me about Pathstone was the close-knit team, and their passion for improving healthcare. Their vision of enabling healthcare organizations to provide high quality and affordable healthcare to their patients was very clear throughout my interactions with the team. I loved seeing the sense of community and teamwork, and knew that this would be an environment I’d enjoy working in where everyone supports one another and has a team-goal oriented mindset.
What are you hoping to get out of this internship?
At the end of this internship, I hope to have a better understanding of how hospital management works, and creating relationships with professionals who work in a variety of fields. In my few short weeks here, I’ve gotten the chance to be in meetings with many different people – from supply chain, to accounting, to clinical work – and am hoping to learn more about managing relationships with them. I’m also looking forward to understanding more of how healthcare systems operate, and the roles of key players within them.
Now that you’ve completed your first week on the job, what is the most challenging adjustment from college to work life?
The most challenging adjustment to work life is all the new terminology and excel functions! Just in my few short weeks, I’ve already learned so much about things such as RFPs, GPOs, charity care, revenue cycle, and more. Although it has been a challenge (and google has been my best friend), I find it exciting that even though I’m in a working environment and not a classroom, I’m still continuing to learn about different topics.
Tumblr media
What are you looking forward to doing most in Chicago this summer?
I’m looking forward to exploring the city and trying new restaurants! While I’ve visited Chicago a few times prior, I’m excited to spend a couple of months in the city and visit its various neighborhoods. Chicago is such a beautiful city with lots to do, so I’m excited to take advantage of that on my days off!
What is something you’re passionate about, and why?
I’ve become very passionate about environmental health, and the major role that one’s environment has on an individual’s health (even prior to being born). I took a class on environmental health, and it showed me how many health disparities result directly from marginalized populations inhabiting areas with high air pollution/waste/noise pollution. I participated in a community research initiative focused on environmental health in Detroit, which is heavily polluted, and I hope to engage in more environmental advocacy for these communities nationwide.
What’s a fun fact about yourself that people might not know about you?
I’m trained in a type of Indian Classical dance, and I’m a huge Spotify playlist enthusiast!

Roofing Contractor Honolulu Commercial Roof Installation - Call Here: +18085183306
Be honest, how much time do you spend thinking about your roof? If you are like most people, the answer is probably little or no time at all. However, roofing should be a major concern for each and every homeowner as it plays a vital role in protecting you and your family. Read on and learn all there is to know about roofing.
Always research a roofing company before you allow them to do any work on your roof. You want to call up the Better Business Bureau or visit their website to see if there are any complaints. Search online and see if anyone has left a review about the company as well. If you don`t do this, you could end up getting with a company that does terrible work.
If you have a leak in your roof and the weather is wet and/or icy, it is a good idea to wait until the weather is better to take care of it. While fixing the roof right away might seem like the best solution, you are increasing your chances of getting hurt.
One of the best ways to find a source of a roof leak is to use water itself. It can be tricky to see where a leak is coming from in the middle of a storm, but a garden hose will allow you to test your roof until the leak has been found.
Make sure whatever roofer you employ has the proper licence to do the job. If you don`t know what`s required, find out for yourself. Check your local building department and call them to find out what is necessary.
While the subject of roofing may seem overwhelming, don`t let that worry you. Whatever the situation with your roof, the tips given here can help you. Whether you want to find more information or just stick to what you do know, you are in a great place. Just remember to use the tips you learned here!
