Otis Frampton Adapts "The Patchwork Girl of Oz"

Image Comics has announced a new ongoing series adaptation of L. Frank Baum's The Patchwork Girl of Oz from Otis Frampton.

"When Ojo the Unlucky's life is turned upside down by a forbidden spell, he embarks on a thrilling quest across Oz to save his uncle from a deadly enchantment. Alongside him is Scraps, a vibrant and whimsical patchwork girl brought to life by magic, whose quirky charm and boundless curiosity might be the key to their success—or doom." (Image Comics) The duo are also joined by Bungle the Glass Cat.

The Patchwork Girl of Oz #1, featuring a cover by Otis Frampton, goes on sale on January 22, 2025.

Anyway, I learned about the Russian Wizard of Oz so I wanted to draw Scraps meeting Strasheela, since as far as I know she has no Magic Land equivalent!

My favorite thing about the original Wizard of Oz books is how they explain the things that should not be alive but are. Because it’s basically:

“Why are the Patchwork Girl and Jack Pumpkinhead alive?” “They were brought to life by magic.”

“Why’s the Tin Man alive?” “He’s actually a walking ship of Theseus and was once human.”

“Why’s the Scarecrow alive?” “What are you, stupid? He just is!”

somehow I knew ahead of time that I would love Scraps, and I did, as soon as I read The Patchwork Girl of Oz, what a dang trip and Scraps is such a darling. love how irreverent she is, such a dang icon.

not a dang clue how I'd go about stylizing her crazy quilt design, maybe I'll figure that out later. for the sake of my sanity I'd have to simplify the patterns.

I also freshened up my take on Scarecrow, I love the teardrop shaped painted on nose, so that'll at least make him stand a little from the various illustrated versions of Strasheela, haha.
