merfolk in general are just. horrible horrible polyglots. their brains are already hardwired for language and quick language acquisition that remains active all their lives, further helped by retaining a high neural plasticity for their long lives, and especially enjoy complex language and language-based play and problem solving. but they also tend to have a lot of their society arranged where there's often multiple different languages at play within the same area, and only really stops being so once you get into especially small villages that have below the merfolk norm for outside contact. every merfolk alive today knows at least two languages, but most of them know far more than that, especially because one of those two will be the common-technical language. its been standardized and wide-scale implemented across the merkingdom after their dominance, to help bridge the gap between these different languages, basically as a successful version of esperanto. but its a trade language, and is mostly used for information you might want to reach as many people as possible, such as laws or business dealings or public announcements or the like. most merfolk don't view it as and don't treat it as a language proper, and its not what they prefer to converse in if they have another choice, usually finding it pretty limiting and restrictive, which is why its called common-technical.

miranda, being a royal who is regularly in contact with many different people around the merkingdom and regularly expected to be fully able to converse with them to do her job, knows just. so many languages. i might be changing exactly how many soon, but last time i counted it was in the low teens. like its just a perfect storm of her brain being wired for swift language acquisition and having a job that requires it and a position that means shes constantly around people from all around the merkingdom. not to mention having to know english too, which isn't just not her first language, it's not even her fourth language.

meanwhile, aaravi knows english and a little bit of hindi, less because of her mother and moreso because of her nana... its not that her mother never used it with her, but she was. less focused on using it or teaching aaravi, let's say. nana mishra uses it a lot more and is more interested in teaching aaravi when she asks her, especially in the intermittent period after her mom died and nana mishra was able to come back into her life to help aaravi pick up the pieces (though not after aaravi kind of. got left on her own. for an unfortunate amount of time). its just also fallen by the wayside with aaravi's whole Everything Else and kind of having a hard time accepting her nana's help and kind of being terrified of her (of no fault of her nana's, aaravi's just. she's just really traumatized after Everything, alright. having someone try to offer her help afterwards, especially when aaravi's scared of getting singled out as half human and half monster, is just. it's not something she can bring herself to trust.)

...you know, I think Jiang Cheng spent all those years feeling just as fucking guilty about Wei Wuxian getting made the whipping boy in his name, as Wei Wuxian did about being Yu Ziyuan's stated motivation for making her family miserable.

Angrier about it than Wei Wuxian! More interested in throwing the blame around! Resentful! But just as guilty.

Really adds more depth to his abortive attempt a little after this to die for him, and Wei Wuxian's much more successful maneuver a while after that to maim himself for him.

Also adds to the 'Remarkable He's As Sane As He Is, Honestly' stats of post-timeskip Sect Leader Jiang.

Kyoichiro literally STABS HIMSELF with Mutsumi's knife to make his point. I can't tell if this is masterful manipulation or just Kyoichiro desperate to prove his sincerity, but either way it's one hell of a symbolic gesture.

And I think this is what makes Mutsumi cave in and agree to Kyoichiro's insane demands - it's one thing if Kyoichiro is putzing around and threatening people, but if he's going so far as to seriously hurt himself in the name of Mutsumi's safety, how can she justify fighting against him? How can she risk his safety/wellbeing in exchange for her freedom? He may be insane and completely in the wrong, but he's her brother, and she'd rather give in and suffer for a while than see him bleed by his own hands.

Except Taiyo isn't going to let that happen.

I cannot stop thinking about the fact that, ironically, in his college years Commander Ruju would've been voted 'most likely to wind up as an Inquest flunky' in every timeline EXCEPT the one where he does, in fact, wind up joining the Inquest. and that's only because in that version, they'd vote him most likely to wind up in Inquest management instead (and they are correct, unfortunately)

some of his early college-era antics under the cut:

setting off the smoke alarms in other college dorms, getting his 'rival' classes doused with flame-extinguishing foam

using his water magic to make the fountains spray people

mild air element static shocks JUST strong enough to make other students' hair frizz up right before class starts

raising bricks under people's feet with the earth element in order to very discreetly trip them right in plain sight

ATTEMPTING to pressure others into doing his projects (he only got away with this because it always backfired on him)

interfering with class demonstrations via heckling

freezing hallway floors into solid ice rinks after class

frequently cornering and intimidating anyone who was unpopular and/or meek enough that he could get away with it

all this to say, if my rat bullied your rat during college, they may be entitled to emotional compensation! feel free to proceed to WvW and beat his ass for fun and profit. don't worry, he's an elementalist. he's very used to performing his downstate rotation. 👍

The timeline about the events taking place before the series starts mentions some things that sort of imply other things

We know that Kendall got out of rehab (the last time he was in anyways) three years before the start of the show. He mentions he 'spent a year in Shanghai' which reads as him doing penance for his 'fuck up'. Sending your son who just got out of rehab to the other side of the planet away from all of his support system is horrible, and thus a certified Logan move.

And my read on it is that Ken did stay sober that year against all odds, which is why he feels ready and entitled to take over Waystar at the start of S1

And if him and Nate used to hang out in Shanghai it kinda implies that Nate maybe helped him stay sober?
