Notocactus horstii (Parodia horstii)

When David Hunt published his book "The New Cactus Lexicon", he put all of the Notocactus species into Parodia (as Ted Anderson had done earlier), but DNA evidence has led some to doubt that the resulting classification is monophyletic (that is, all the plants in the genus are each other's closest relatives). Until this is resolved, we will let it have 2 names. While yellow is the most common flower color in this group of cacti, Notocactus horstii can be orange, pinkish-purple or vivid magenta. It comes from the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brasil.

Parodia warasii

Like other plants long known as Notocactus, this species has been merged into Parodia, but there are questions bout whether this new taxonomy is in fact monophyletic. In any case, P. warasii is closely related to other species such as P. magnifica with bristly spines, mostly coming from southern Brasil. It is remarkable how many huge yellow flowers it produced on the day the photo was taken.
