Mini-review:

Wow, I didn't think I would enjoy The Frog so much. I guess I was in the mood for a dark, propulsive thriller. I've seen some people say it's 'slow', but like... where? This kept me glued to the screen from the very first episode, and it got more and more intense throughout the next ones. It even ventures into psychological horror territory from time to time, which made it even more fun to me. The writing isn't perfect (some of the characters aren't as well developed as they should), but the directing and the acting more than make up for it. Go Min Si turns in a particularly strong performance, and it's clear she gave it her all. I'm not gonna say this is the best thriller k-drama I've seen, but it was definitely enjoyable as hell.

After putting all the groceries away and preparing foods that needed some time to marinate, which should've taken a lot less time if Chanyeol quit messing around when you told him- you were finally done, heading over to the bathroom to change into your sleepwear which was nothing much but a satin slip dress, you weren't the type to be fully cladded in "proper" sleep attire, not when your skin was suffocating in scrubs everyday.

Upon leaving the bathroom you came face to face with no other than Chanyeol, toothbrush, towel and Pjs in hand, the scene was almost laughable, he looked like the definition of man-child.

"What're you, 11?" you teased, chuckling while you pushed past him to go to your bedroom, not realising his lingering eyes on your parting figure, "..N-no!" he finally spoke, mentally smacking himself for stuttering.

It's just a dress, he told himself in attempt to get a grip on his over the top reaction, hurriedly shuffling into the bathroom to change into his own pyjamas.

Chanyeol was still in the bathroom when you plopped down onto your bed to sink into the comfort of your covers, next to your bed was a mattress that was maybe a little too small for Chanyeol but that was not your problem, no one told him to be so damn tall.

You weren’t planning on letting him sleep in your room at first, that would make the situation weirder than it already was, your neighbour who you’d consider barely a friend was sleeping over, in your apartment, in your room- when you told him that you set up his sleeping area in the living room he was quick to reject the place, saying he couldn’t sleep on his own. Chanyeol, 6 something feet, was scared of sleeping on his own, it wasn’t rocket science but it was still a lot to wrap your head around. But, he promised there was going to be “no funny business” so you agreed to letting him sleep in your room.

A couple more minutes went by till the doofus finally showed up at your door, knocking on it to see if he was still welcome to sleep in your room, looking up from your phone where you were mindlessly scrolling through different social media platforms you scanned his face and sleep attire, your eyes lingered a little too long on how his white tee was snug and fit in all the right places all over his torso, back and chest muscles peeking through, and those whorey plaid pyjama pants, the infamous fuckboy o’clock attire indeed.

Chanyeol wasn’t oblivious to your roaming eyes, leaning on your doorway with a smug look on his face, “Like what you see?” the question snapped you out of your trance, finally looking at his face- trying your best to fight the blush that was creeping up your body from being caught, “Die.” you deadpanned, eyes falling back to the dimming screen of your phone.

He let out a series of giggles as he skipped to his mattress, K.O-ing it to plop himself down making you roll your eyes, he was such a boy. Chanyeols’ senses were attacked with your lingering scent on your spare sheets, the faint smell of vanilla and a perfume he’s not familiar with fogged his brain, he was quick to indulge in it, letting out a satisfied sigh without being noticed by you who was only a couple of inches away, to him it was addicting, something he could get used to.

It was quiet for a little, thinking he must’ve fell asleep you looked up from your phone momentarily just to catch the top of his head ducking at the side of your bed, it was laughable, the way his face slowly came into view, stopping right under his nose- he was really like something out of a cartoon.

"What do you want?" you asked, tone flat whilst going back to looking at your phone, "Read me a bedtime story?"

"No" “Oh come on! why not?”

“We have a long day tomorrow, go to bed,” you sighed, turning your phone off and turning the other way so you were no longer face to face. A beat of silence followed before Chanyeol let out a defeated sigh, audibly dropping down to his pillow, “Will you at least sing me a-“ cutting him off with a pillow, smothering his face you tried your best to keep your hold over his flailing body, “Go. To. Bed.” still keeping the pillow on his face, finally letting go after hearing the multiple muffled “Okay’s”

It was quiet again, nothing heard but soft and settled breathing, the silence wasn't awkward at all, it was like he wasn't there, it didn't take long for you to start to drift into a slump. However, to your dismay- you were ripped out of your sleeping ritual by Chanyeols' artificial snoring and incapability to hold in his laugh even though there was nothing hilarious going on, or maybe it was your lack of humour.

Your eye twitched, ears irritated from the sound of him, you grabbed onto your pillow firmly before turning over and smacking his face with it.

"What the fuck is wrong with you- I'm trying to sleep!" you expressed in a shriek, "I ant seep" was the only thing he said that you understood, vocal cords muffled from your smothering- "Your head is going to end up on a stick if you don’t shut up!”

Chanyeol tried to stop you by pulling you down from your arm that was holding the pillow against his face, you were tired and sick of his bullshit so your reaction time wasn't exactly what you would call quick enough, not that you would've been able to match his strength.

The force had pulled you off your bed and out of the comfort of your duvet, landing you on top of him.

Still you continued to try and shut him up, but it was impossible, this was a mistake- "I'm going to kill you-" you choked out, half laughing at the sight of him STILL trying to pry the pillow of his face, but your half lived victory didn't last very long before he had a grip on both your arms, the pressure making you loosen your grip on the pillow, allowing him to duck out of its way.

"I could've died!" he shrieked, "Good," you deadpanned, attempting to get out of his grasp to get ahold of your pillow again, your body still against his own.

The view from his perspective was far from innocent, it was straight out of a cliche show- a "It's not what it looks like" kind of scene, but of course it would soon turn out to be something it didn't look like.

"Stop moving," his tone half serious, "Stop breathing-" snapping back at him in the same tone, rolling your eyes before moving again, your eyes widening at the same time your movements quickly came to a halt, feeling the half hardening organ underneath you, Chanyeol was quick enough to close his eyes so he wouldn't see your reaction.

If I can't see her, she can't see me- he tried to convince himself with the childish mentality.

"Oh my god," you breathed out after a couple of seconds of intense silence, looking down at yourself and where you were placed, your not so modest attire and back at Chanyeols' reddening face- the situation dawned on you.

"You pervert!"

You were quick to scramble out of his grasp, a quiet groan leaving him from your sudden movements, you crawled back into the comfort of your own bed, leaving an embarrassed Chanyeol just inches away from you.

“I’m sorry-“ he quickly tried to resolve the situation, grabbing your pillow that was still discarded on the floor and attempted to smother himself, you almost chuckled at the situation but caught yourself.

This was not a laughing matter, maybe next week but not right now.

“Just go to bed,” you quietly managed, dragging yourself closer to the wall and squeezed your eyes shut, your drowsiness was long gone by now, it’s going to take a hot minute for either of you to calm down and actually sleep.

Soon enough you did, Chanyeols’ breathing calmed down- clearly his own smothering didn’t do him any good but he was fast asleep, lightly scoffing at his sleeping state, as if nothing had happened you turned back to the wall to try and catch some sleep before the tiring day you had ahead, the butterflies in your stomach not going unnoticed, breaking into small smile before you drifted into dreamland.

South Korea’s opposition said on Thursday it had filed an impeachment motion against the acting president, Han Duck-soo, in an escalating row over the composition of the constitutional court which will decide whether to remove his predecessor from office. South Korea became mired in a political crisis when President Yoon Suk Yeol, currently suspended, declared martial law on 3 December. Yoon was stripped of his duties by parliament on 14 December over the dramatic declaration, but a constitutional court ruling upholding the decision is necessary to complete the impeachment process. The court is however currently short of three judges. While it can go ahead with its six members on the bench, a single dissenting vote would reinstate Yoon. The opposition wants Han to approve three more nominees to fill the nine-member bench, something that he has so far refused to do, essentially leaving both sides in a deadlock. The opposition Democratic party therefore says the acting president should be impeached too. “We have filed the motion ... and will report it to the plenary session today,” MP Park Sung-joon said of the action against Han. “We will put it to a vote tomorrow.” Han’s refusal to formally appoint the three judges proves that he “does not have the will or qualification to uphold the constitution”, the Democratic party’s floor leader, Park Chan-dae, told reporters. Han has said that he would certify the judges’ appointments only if his ruling People Power party (PPP) and the opposition reach a compromise on the nominees.

[...] If the opposition passes the impeachment motion against Han in Friday’s vote, it would mark the first time democratic South Korea has impeached an acting president. In Han’s place, the finance minister, Choi Sang-mok, would step in as acting president.

South Korea could be on the verge of having two Presidents impeached within less than a month.

South Korea's embattled President Yoon Suk Yeol avoided an opposition-led attempt to impeach him over his short-lived imposition of martial law, as most ruling party lawmakers boycotted a parliamentary vote Saturday to deny a two-thirds majority needed to suspend his presidential power.

The scrapping of the motion is expected to intensify public protests calling for Yoon's ouster and deepen political chaos in South Korea, with a survey suggesting a majority of South Koreans support the president's impeachment. Yoon's martial law declaration drew criticism from his own ruling conservative People Power Party, but it is also determined to oppose Yoon's impeachment apparently because it fears losing the presidency to liberals.

After the motion fell through, members of the main liberal opposition Democratic Party rallied inside the National Assembly, chanting slogans calling for Yoon's impeachment or resignation. The party's floor leader, Park Chan-dae, said it will soon prepare for a new impeachment motion.

Love Tractor Eps 7 & 8 (Finale) Stray Thoughts

Last week, Ye Chan spent most of his time in the midst of peak crush anxiety over Sun Yeol. Sun Yeol"s ex decided to come from Seoul and was a total dick to Ye Chan. Sun Yeol finally laid that relationship to rest, and spent some time doing physical labor with Ye Chan because Ye Chan noticed that he wasn't sleeping much. We left at Ye Chan admitting his feelings.

Episode 7

Korean actors are very good with their eyes.

Oh no. I get thst Sun Yeol has been through a lot, but don't ignore this man's confession after forcing it out of him.

I'm glad Ye Chan is holding his ground on his feelings. Feels bad that Sun Yeol is likely regurgitating things said to him or he thought about himself to Ye Chan.

I am loving the cheesy flirting from Ye Chan.

"I'm sure my sincerity will get to him someday." I love this man.

Oh no. My man is spiraling. Stay gold, Ponyboy.

I love that Ye Chan is passionate about farming, because it just makes sense to him that Sun Yeol should pursue music.

Aww, it's his old piano. His grandfather has been taking care of it. I'm gonna cry.

That was beautiful. I loved Ye Chan breaking that with a stolen kiss and comparing music to farming.

We were having too much fun and the final episode is approaching. The looming presence of the dad was bound to make a physical appearance. Love that final shot of the huge space separating them from the dad.

Episode 8

It feels so significant that Sun Yeol caught his father's hand before he could be struck. As we grow up we become a physical match for our fathers. That felt so powerful that he said no, and took all of his father's power away.

They did the music offer completely offscreen, but it works here.

Oh that was fun play with the graphics in the door.

I'm enjoying the banter they're falling into. I think Sun Yeol is realizing he's always wanted to be fussed over.

This show has some of the best lighting I've seen in BL.

Is this a Holland song? I think that's his voice.

Oh, short BLs. We get a "we're a couple now" scene immediately followed by a "work will keep us apart scene." Goddamn.

Gays on bikes!! Nevermind. I'm back.

I'm feeling a bit sad. I wrote about a boy I loved who died when I was 18 during Eternal Yesterday. He struggled with mobility impairments, but those didn't limit him on bikes. I remember riding with him deep into the woods of a state park once like this. I miss him.

I love shots of gays playing in water. I'm sure humans and our ancestors have played like this for hundreds of thousands of years.

Okay, that phone practice was cute.

That was a decent kiss. I like it for the characters.

This was cute!

Final Verdict: 8.5, Recommended. Genuinely, I think this is the rare KBL that uses its time well without feeling like big pieces of it were missing. I feel like the final quarter managed to distinguish itself enough that I will just compare it favorably alongside Restart After Coming Back Home instead of just recommending people watch the Japanese film instead. I also think they managed to cover some interesting ground on queer ideas with the dad and the ex. This was a solid little show.

Pleasing wild film biz comedy

A key question with art about the artistic process is: how much you do show of the results? If you’re claiming that the painting or record or TV show is great, then it’s best if you keep it off screen. (I was listening to a podcast the other day where they digressed for over 10 minutes just remembering the sheer awfulness of the show within-the-show’s comedy sketches in Aaron Sorkin’s Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip, which, to be clear, were supposed to be cutting-edge good.) If we’re meant to be laughing at it, though, you’ll need it front and centre.

In Cobweb, we end up seeing a lot of the film director Kim Yeol (Song Kang-Ho) is reshooting. That film is in luscious black & white, with the behind-the-scenes stuff in colour. He’s reshooting because he’s had dreams with a better ending that he thinks will turn his film into a masterpiece. 

He feels he needs it to be the best thing he’s ever done because the critics say he’s never escaped the shadow of his late mentor. But the owner of the studio doesn’t see the point of the reshoots and doesn’t want to pay for them. Plus, this is Korea in the 1970s, and tight censorship controls films before, during and after production – the original version was already struggling for approval and the radical rewrite is even less likely to get a pass. 

In the end, Director Kim gets just frantic two days to reassemble the cast and crew (most of whom are busy working on other productions by this point) and rework the main storyline of the movie. Meanwhile, he doesn’t actually have the studio owner’s approval and he’s hoping the censors don’t find out what he’s up to. 

We get filming mishaps, back-stage intrigue, lots of people getting very drunk, emergency cast substitutions… the full chaotic production experience. Woven in with this is the footage from the increasingly unhinged melodrama that Kim is filming, to the bafflement of much of the cast.

A useful selling point for non-Korean audiences is Song Kang-Ho, who starred in Parasite, along with several other Bong Joon-ho and Park Chan-wook movies. He’s excellent value as a director with that familiar mix of intense insecurity and deluded self-belief.

But is it funny? I laughed a lot. I’m sure there are specifically Korean and probably specifically Korean-film-buff gags I’m not getting, but Cobweb can face up to comparisons with film-set-set classics like Living In Oblivion and not be disgraced. And the film-within-a-film is a treat.
