The "Nubbin bug" lives - A Star Trek prop resurrection with 3D Printing 🐛🖖🎥

Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 1, Episode 25 (May 1988), "Conspiracy", was one of my favorites. It featured a mind-controlling alien parasite referred to as the "Nubbin bug", or at least by The Greatest Generation Star Trek podcast.

Back in 1998, there was not a lot of computer CGI, so it was a stop-motion prop. Years later, the co-hosts of The Greatest Generation, a fun Star Trek podcast, stumbled upon the original silicone molds used to create the Nubbin bug while a listener found in a warehouse clearance sale in Van Nuys, California.

The podcasters acquired the mold. Shortly after, a listener from Atlanta who works at a prop studio offered to help preserve the prop since the original rubber material would decay over time. This led to the creation of archival-quality plaster casts to preserve the iconic alien for generations to come.

And they did some more, using 3D scanners - the Nubbin bug was recreated as a 3D model, allowing for exact replicas to be printed. Over 100 of these replicas were made, each one hand-painted and assembled to match the original as closely as possible. Their handmade / 3D-printed versions look almost identical to the bugs that appeared in the episode.

They also designed a Playschool-style retail packaging box to package the bugs. Fans of the podcast can purchase the limited-edition replicas. I don't know if they will post the 3D files, but I'll email and ask.

This is a really cool project from one of the weirdest/best episodes, and I am thrilled that someone was able to preserve this piece of Sci-Fi history in such a cool way - the entire story is on this TikTok video.

Just wanted to say the IF is amazing, i just spent 3 days straight binging it and loved every second. Please ignore if it has already been asked but what is all the RO's preferred genre of music? And favourite songs if they have any?

Thank you for the kind words! And I just wanna say, your ask is the final push for me to actually scour through most of my songs on Spotify and finish assembling playlists for Rin, Santana, Skylar, and Jackal 😆 But I had so much fun doing so and I'll keep adding more and updating all of the characters' playlists as I discovered more new (and old lost) songs that fit them.

I have the links to their spotify playlist which contain a mix of their favorite songs and some songs whose lyrics fit them. I don't think I can link too much stuff in one post unfortunately, so I'll make a separate post to announce the rest of the characters playlists later on 😁But I'll try to link one song that either perfectly encapsulate their music taste or whose lyrics fit the character--or at least a song that they'd enjoy listening to.

Also, I basically have to split up my own music taste and favorite genres among all of my characters and I'm running out of genres 😭 But as for your question, I don't think I've answered something like that before--at least not in detail.

Ash enjoys quite a wide variety of genres, but mostly, their go-to are genres that are more energetic and/or aggressive. So, think like Rock, Phonk, Dubstep, Trap, Drum and Bass, Metal, that kind of stuff. But usually, they listen to songs whose vibes and/or lyrics kind of fit the mood they're in at the moment.

Also, fun fact, they did have some kind of an emo phase during their angsty and edgy teenage years 😂 It wasn't really too apparent (like no, they didn't have that typical emo hairstyle or wore those iconic eyeliners), but they just relate to quite a number of the lyrics of songs that can be considered to be emo anthems.

The song that fits the genre they like to listen to and the lyrics also matched their feelings and obsession love for MC is "So Sick" by Johnny Goth.

As the child of a classically-trained musician, Rin mostly enjoys classical and instrumental music. One of their favorite instruments is the piano and they used to enjoy learning to play it. Maybe in the future, when they won't be so busy anymore, they can pick up their piano lessen again...

Also, they tend to gravitate towards more soothing and calming songs in general because of the headaches they usually got after using their power too much or to see to far into the future. So most of their playlist is filled with instrumental songs, either piano, cello, or violin, or a combination of those.

As for the song that fits them, I'd say "The Belt of Faith" by Jung Jaeil kinda fits their vibe and the gravitas they carry (Yes, the main soundtrack for the film "Parasite" and yeah, I can see the irony 😂 )

So sorry in advance if some of this seems janky as I haven't gone over it in a hot minute) Note: I also wanna redo the icon thing to be more of an eye instead of the lotus since it makes more sense literally and thematically and to just try to make it look better in general. For context my OC Mourynn/Vallotash (same person kinda) is Mordremoth's (parasitic) Scion in a weird imposter (syndrome) situation (leaving that bit out for now), and her whole thing was inspired by the ??? area in Jahai bluffs with the one quote that inspired her existence "Are you a dragon dreaming that it's a hero? If you were, how would you know?", where the area also matches her colours thematically too, and why her Mesmer abilities all revolve around hallucinations and tapping into the "Dragon of mind/plant, roots/madness, etc." where the spec also evolves slowly over time as she develops, but it does get amped up during LS1 with Scarlet being responsible for kickstarting it (as she brainwashed Mourynn to help cultivate the Dreamthistle into the Toxic Offshoots, and from there with HoT and so on as things got worse and this just evolved into it's own thing, haha). Super abridging explanations (and badly lol) since I feel that part with the Toxic Alliance and those spores were an important step towards this becoming what it is. Rtas 'Vadum:

Debuted in Halo 2

Born on Sept. 21, 2487, Rtas would explore his keep's shoreline as a child - nearly dying at ten years old in one exploration gone wrong - and graduated with honors from a top war college. By Sept. 2554, he would serve as a commander to all the SpecOps units in the Fleet of Particular Justice. During the Battle of Installation 04, he and a team that included his second in command - Bero 'Kusovai - would be sent to investigate a possible human boarding on the agricultural support ship Infinite Succor. However, they would not find humans there, but the Flood parasite. While the outbreak would be contained, Rtas would be the sole survivor - and lost left mandibles in the process. Following this, he would be reassigned to to command all SpecOps from High Charity.

A little time would pass before Rtas would be assigned to lead a mission against a heretic faction, his former Supreme Commander Thel 'Vadamee joining them as the newly appointed Arbiter. An attack against the base of operations would ensue, only for Rtas to once again detect the stench of the Flood. Complicating things further was that the Heretic Leader locked himself behind an unbreakable barrier while a harsh storm was on the horizon. The Arbiter would volunteer to conduct a risky plan to draw out the Heretic Leader solo, with Rtas deciding to leave with him his blade as help. The two would not see each other again until later at High Charity, where Rtas argued with the Prophet of Truth over the changing of the Honor Guard and the Prophet undermining Rtas' attempt to save the Prophet of Regret. Another reunion would take place on Installation 05 - specifically the Quarantine Zone - where Rtas and his SpecOps forces would aid the Arbiter in reaching the Sacred Icon necessary to activate the Halo. However, following this mission, the Hierarchs would order the execution of all Sangheili, beginning the Great Schism. As civil war erupted, Rtas would reunite with Thel once again and assist him in reaching a Scarab to break into the ring's control room, although Rtas would then split to achieve another goal - taking control of the Shadow of Intent. Now leading the fledgling Fleet of Retribution, Rtas would conduct a campaign to quarantine and sterilize the Flood-infected High Charity and Halo, only for a single cruiser to escape and head to Earth.

Rtas and parts of his fleet would follow it, joining the Battle of Voi in the process. Knowing more than anyone else the threat of the Flood spreading, he was prepared to glass all of Earth, but was talked into only glassing the portion of the continent the Flood had landed on. On his ship, he and other notable figures of the war would receive a message from Cortana warning that a Gravemind had taken over High Charity and was heading to Earth, with the Ark at the other side of Voi's portal being the only way to stop it. Rtas was eager to take his forces - alongside the UNSC Forward Unto Dawn - to go on the offensive against the Covenant and Flood at the Ark. His fleet would engage the Covenant in the skies, being confident despite being outnumbered three to one, declaring the iconic line: "Then it is an even fight." Unfortunately, while the battle was going well and Rtas prepared to destroy the Citadel, the Flood-infested High Charity appeared to knock his ship off course, temporarily taking it out of action. Once the threat of the Covenant activating the entire Halo Array was finished, Rtas would gather all the human and Sangheili forces and take them back to Earth, while the Arbiter, Master Chief, Sergeant Johnson, and 343 Guilty Spark stayed behind with the UNSC Forward Unto Dawn to finish off the Flood for good. Once the war was finally over, Rtas would return to Earth again to attend a memorial ceremony, although he would stay on his ship in orbit while the Arbiter attended in person. 

At some point later in the year 2553, Shadow of Intent would respond to a distress signal at Rahnelo. By this point, Rtas had recruited Bladmaster Vul 'Soran and Unggoy Ranger Stolt as his advisors, the former serving as his second in command. At Rahnelo, Rtas would learn of the existence of a Prelate intent on taking out the Sangheili and allow the female warrior Tul 'Juran to join in the hunt for him in defiance of tradition against female military service. They would pursue the Prelate to Duraan, only to fall into a trap and be boarded. After fending off the attack and capturing the Prelate, where he learned of greater plans forged by the Minister of Preparation as well as the Prelate's hatred of Rtas personally for supposedly causing the deaths of his family on High Charity. Rtas would still speak amicably with the Prelate, singing for him and theorizing that the Minister deceived the Prelate on when his family had died, sowing the seeds for the Prelate's later turn. Yet before that, when Rtas took a small team to confront the Minister and destroy his prototype Halo weapon, the Prelate would briefly betray them. This betrayal would be short-lived, as the Prelate would then sacrifice himself to take out both the Minister and the weapon while Rtas escaped alive. Once the mission was over, Rtas would speak with the Arbiter regarding changing the Swords of Sanghelios' restrictions on female enlistment due to Tul. Afterward, Rtas resolved to locate the survivors of the San'Shyuum species, in order to ensure the ones good-hearted like the Prelate would be treated fairly.

Shadow of Intent would be involved in a few events between the years of 2553 and 2558, including an operation against pirates in a Joint Occupation Zone and being stalked by three ONI prowlers that would then be destroyed under unclear circumstances. By Nov. 2559, Rtas would still be pursuing the San'Shyuum and therefore unable to assist the Arbiter in a trip to Netherop, but it is unclear if he was caught up in the Created conflict earlier and if his mission was known and allowed by Cortana.

Ripa 'Moramee:

Debuted in Halo Wars

Born on Malurok on June 2nd, 2478, he served as a warlord thrall within the Ministry of Preservation, gaining infamy across the Covenant for his ruthlessness. During this time, he notably quelled the Sixteenth Unggoy Disobedience within days and killed the Kig-Yar pirate prince Krith. Yet, ironic to his role of quashing rebellions, Ripa would then go on to attempt a coup against his kaidon in Moram, only to fail and end up imprisoned in the super-maximum security penitentiary known as the Weeping Shadows of Sorrow. While there, he incited a large-scale prison riot as part of a plan to escape, only to be captured once again and placed in solitary confinement. It was here that he was visited by the Prophet of Regret, who bestowed upon him the rank of Arbiter and the mission to wipe out humanity. Before that, however, the new Arbiter would first squash a rebellion incited by his appointment.

Starting in 2526, Ripa would lead the Fleet of Glorious Interdiction during the Harvest Campaign, while also occasionally visiting Etran Haborage to fight back against the Flood presence there. Around February 2531, the Harvest Campaign would be changed by the discovery of an underground relic; valuable information was gathered, but the relic ended up taken by human forces before the Covenant could destroy it to keep it out of their hands. Following this information led Ripa's fleet to Arcadia and the location of another Forerunner structure, with the UNSC Spirit of Fire pursuing them. Noting how the human professor Ellen Anders was able to interface with Forerunner technology and believing she could do the same for activating Etran Haborage's Forerunner fleet, the Prophet of Regret would task Ripa in capturing her. He would ambush her and Sergeant John Forge on Arcadia, nearly killing Forge in the process.

But bringing Anders to Etran Haborage only allowed the Spirit of Fire to follow, beginning Ripa's downfall. While he was able to use Anders to finally activate the Forerunner fleet, she managed to escape immediately afterwards, regrouping with her allies and informing them of the fleet. They would then launch a plan to destroy the entire shield world and the fleet with it using their slipspace engine. Ripa would attempt to stop this plan, leading to a second confrontation with Forge. With victory in the duel in sight, Ripa fell to Forge's taunts and opened himself up to getting stabbed in the neck by Forge's combat knife then stabbed in the chest by his own dropped energy sword. His corpse and armor would be destroyed along with the shield world, preventing the Covenant from being able to store them within the Mausoleum of the Arbiter, while his holdings on Malurok would be the source of dispute among neighboring keeps even after the fall of the Covenant.

Samus should look downright monstrous.

First off: Chozo DNA from her teen years. She should have unusually long and thin limbs, with fine scales over her fingers and toes, and black and grey feathers under her blonde hair.

Second: phazon. Samus should have lighting scars. When she was corrupted, they would glow blue, but now they're a faint red.

Third: X-parasite. The X are known to dramatically mutate their hosts when under duress, and being surrounded by panicking soldiers would track. While her suit would limit some of this, she should still likely have exaggerated claws, canines, and shoulders like many x creatures. Couple that with the above scarring from surgical procedures (which would likely follow the plates of the armor itself), and you have a ton of physical damage.

Fourth: Metroid. The metroid DNA has already demonstrated physiological effects, namely the energy drain and Metroid suit. I imagine most of the mutations would only become apparent during the latter. First, armor carapace. Samus likely grew thicker, shell-like skin along her upper back and limbs. These would protrude when enraged, showing further Chozo feathers underneath which act as padding. Her already gangly limbs and shoulders would bulk up considerably, with her claws and fangs thickening to match the Metroid queen. Speaking of which, her eyes and hair would likely take on lime green colors, because reference, with her irises splitting into the three nuclei iconic to metroids. Finally, those old phazon scars would be repurposed into energy channels for absorption, causing them to darken and flow a bright blue. Incidentally, her skin itself would likely take on red-brown patterns along her neck and abdomen, again matching Metroid queens.

In her zero-suit, she'd go from a mangled but attractive woman with a lot of muscle, to an angry, predator-esque technicolor nightmare demon of many Tumblr user's wet-dreams.

During the Battle of Installation 04, he and a team that included his second in command - Bero 'Kusovai - would be sent to investigate a possible human boarding on the agricultural support ship Infinite Succor. However, they would not find humans there, but the Flood parasite. While the outbreak would be contained, Rtas would be the sole survivor - and lost left mandibles in the process. Following this, he would be reassigned to to command all SpecOps from High Charity.

A little time would pass before Rtas would be assigned to lead a mission against a heretic faction, his former Supreme Commander Thel 'Vadamee joining them as the newly appointed Arbiter. An attack against the base of operations would ensue, only for Rtas to once again detect the stench of the Flood. Complicating things further was that the Heretic Leader locked himself behind an unbreakable barrier while a harsh storm was on the horizon. The Arbiter would volunteer to conduct a risky plan to draw out the Heretic Leader solo, with Rtas deciding to leave with him his blade as help. The two would not see each other again until later at High Charity, where Rtas argued with the Prophet of Truth over the changing of the Honor Guard and the Prophet undermining Rtas' attempt to save the Prophet of Regret. Another reunion would take place on Installation 05 - specifically the Quarantine Zone - where Rtas and his SpecOps forces would aid the Arbiter in reaching the Sacred Icon necessary to activate the Halo. However, following this mission, the Hierarchs would order the execution of all Sangheili, beginning the Great Schism. As civil war erupted, Rtas would reunite with Thel once again and assist him in reaching a Scarab to break into the ring's control room, although Rtas would then split to achieve another goal - taking control of the Shadow of Intent. Now leading the fledgling Fleet of Retribution, Rtas would conduct a campaign to quarantine and sterilize the Flood-infected High Charity and Halo, only for a single cruiser to escape and head to Earth.

Rtas and parts of his fleet would follow it, joining the Battle of Voi in the process. Knowing more than anyone else the threat of the Flood spreading, he was prepared to glass all of Earth, but was talked into only glassing the portion of the continent the Flood had landed on. On his ship, he and other notable figures of the war would receive a message from Cortana warning that a Gravemind had taken over High Charity and was heading to Earth, with the Ark at the other side of Voi's portal being the only way to stop it. Rtas was eager to take his forces - alongside the UNSC Forward Unto Dawn - to go on the offensive against the Covenant and Flood at the Ark. His fleet would engage the Covenant in the skies, being confident despite being outnumbered three to one, declaring the iconic line: "Then it is an even fight." Unfortunately, while the battle was going well and Rtas prepared to destroy the Citadel, the Flood-infested High Charity appeared to knock his ship off course, temporarily taking it out of action. Once the threat of the Covenant activating the entire Halo Array was finished, Rtas would gather all the human and Sangheili forces and take them back to Earth, while the Arbiter, Master Chief, Sergeant Johnson, and 343 Guilty Spark stayed behind with the UNSC Forward Unto Dawn to finish off the Flood for good. Once the war was finally over, Rtas would return to Earth again to attend a memorial ceremony, although he would stay on his ship in orbit while the Arbiter attended in person. 

At some point later in the year 2553, Shadow of Intent would respond to a distress signal at Rahnelo. By this point, Rtas had recruited Bladmaster Vul 'Soran and Unggoy Ranger Stolt as his advisors, the former serving as his second in command. At Rahnelo, Rtas would learn of the existence of a Prelate intent on taking out the Sangheili and allow the female warrior Tul 'Juran to join in the hunt for him in defiance of tradition against female military service. They would pursue the Prelate to Duraan, only to fall into a trap and be boarded. After fending off the attack and capturing the Prelate, where he learned of greater plans forged by the Minister of Preparation as well as the Prelate's hatred of Rtas personally for supposedly causing the deaths of his family on High Charity. Rtas would still speak amicably with the Prelate, singing for him and theorizing that the Minister deceived the Prelate on when his family had died, sowing the seeds for the Prelate's later turn. Yet before that, when Rtas took a small team to confront the Minister and destroy his prototype Halo weapon, the Prelate would briefly betray them. This betrayal would be short-lived, as the Prelate would then sacrifice himself to take out both the Minister and the weapon while Rtas escaped alive. Once the mission was over, Rtas would speak with the Arbiter regarding changing the Swords of Sanghelios' restrictions on female enlistment due to Tul. Afterward, Rtas resolved to locate the survivors of the San'Shyuum species, in order to ensure the ones good-hearted like the Prelate would be treated fairly.

Shadow of Intent would be involved in a few events between the years of 2553 and 2558, including an operation against pirates in a Joint Occupation Zone and being stalked by three ONI prowlers that would then be destroyed under unclear circumstances. By Nov. 2559, Rtas would still be pursuing the San'Shyuum and therefore unable to assist the Arbiter in a trip to Netherop, but it is unclear if he was caught up in the Created conflict earlier and if his mission was known and allowed by Cortana.

Debuted in Halo: The Cole Protocol

A friend of Thel 'Vadamee and Zealot, he and the Zealot team Thel led were tasked in 2535 by the Prophet of Regret with hunting down Kig-Yar rebels trading with humans. During the conflict, he would question why the Prophets ordered the outright extinction of humanity rather than accepting them into the Covenant Empire. He would also be the one to notice the contradictions between Regret's orders for them and the Kig-Yar Reth's claims that the Prophet of Truth had ordered the trading with humans for a secret plan, as well as uncomfortable implications of the Hierarchs' fallibility. Thel would warn him against those thoughts, but they would prove true as Thel and Zhar would brought before both Prophets to eliminate any witnesses of what occurred at the Rubble. Zhar would attempt to kill Truth, but his own friend cut him down instead, which made the two Prophets decide to spare Thel.

SPIRIT CLEANSING - 

A Keyblade modeled after the bathhouse of Spirited Away! This Keyblade is designed to have greater Water magic! The hiltguard of the Keyblade is designed after a the entry way to the bathhouse, with the sides beging formed from the bridgeway. The shaft of the Keyblade is formed from water coming from the bath, that eventually form a watery Haku Dragon, to form the teeth of the Keyblade. The pomel has No-Face's face, with the chain and token being that of a Bath token!

The World Logo comes from the iconic Bathhouse that Yubaba runs. The name comes from the fact that everyone who visits the Bathhouse is a spirit needing to be cleaned! 

KEEPER OF THE FOREST-

A Keyblade modeled after the floral forest from My Neighbor Totoro! This Keyblade is designed to have high Aero and Cure skills! The hilt and shaft are built from a tree, with the teeth of the blade being formed from the three Totoro's, with the main one holding the Umbrella. The pomel of the Keyblade is designed after the top that Totoro rides, with the chain being made up of the Soot Spirits seen early in the film, ending with an Acorn token. 

The World Logo comes from the fact that Totoro seems to be this forest's specific keeper, as does the name of the Keyblade. 

WITCH'S FLIGHT -

A Keyblade modeld after the flying of Kiki from Kiki's Delivery Service! This Keyblade is designed to have great Aero Skills! The hilt and shaft of the Keybladed are designed after Kiki's broom. The teeth of the Keyblade are formed from part of the propeller, attached to a bread basket. The pommel is Kiki's bow, the chain is a bike chain, and the token is the adorable Jiji!

The world logo comes from the city that Kiki decides to set up shop in. The name of the Keyblade comes from Kiki's signature ability with Flight.

IRON WOLF -

A Keyblade modeled after the feral nature of Princess Mononoke! This Keyblade is designed for combos and combo extenders! The Hilt of the keyblade is modeled after wolf fur, with San's face paint on the side, along with her fang necklace forming the pomel. The cross guard is made from her headband with Yakul's horns framing that. The shaft of the blade is again wolf fur, but with the markings of San's spear on it. The teeth of the blade are formed from a wolf head with markings of San's mask, but with an arrow through it that matches the same design of San's spear, and the demon parasite bursting through it. 

The world logo comes from the Iron Town, a major city that the film takes place around. The name comes from the fight between the Human's slinging Iron against the spirits of the forests, namely the Wolves.

OCEANBORNE LOVE-

A Keyblade modeled after the waves of Love from Ponyo! This keyblade is designed to have high water skills! The shaft and hilt of the keyblade are modeled after water, with several bubbles along it. A starfish and some waves makes the teeth of the blade. The handle comes from of the of pre-human hands/feet that Ponyo manages to magic herself, all coming from the pomel of the green bucket. The keychain is a series of pink and blue bubbles ending in a token of Ponyo's sisters.

The world logo comes from the extremely see based location of the film. The name comes again from the Ocean, but also from the love of Ponyo and Sosuke, and can even further reference the love of Fujimoto and Granmamare. 

HEART OF FLAME -

A Keyblade modeled after the ramshackle castle known as Howl's Moving Castle! This Keyblade is designed to have an increase in fire magic! The hilt of the Keyblade is designed after the front of the castle, with the handle being designed from the legs. The shaft of the blade is a smoke stack that emmits a plume of smoke that forms one of Howl's black wings that slowly turn into Calcifer's flame. The token is that of Calcifer himself!

The World Logo comes from well, the name of the Film! The name of the Keyblade comes from the physical description of Calcifer: Howl's Heart taking the form of a Flame.
