I'm absolutely obsessed with how mythology portrays parent-child relationships, especially when at least one divine party is involved. I've talked about Karna and Arjuna's relationship with their fathers, and how it might tie up to their characters and situations, and the Mahabharata as a whole, but they're not the only ones! Speaking exclusively about father-son dynamics in this post, and we have a lot of them!
You have Yudhisthira, whose father Yama/Dharma shows up in his son's mortal life twice (iirc), gives him a 20 min quiz each time and then tells him that no son, we don't allow dogs in heaven (which, how dare, but we all have that one parent). This is so in line with Yudhisthira's arc, poor man that he is, having to spend his whole life finding answers to questions about righteousness and honour, losing his friends, brothers, wife and children in the process.
Rama-Dasharatha and Ganesha-Shiva are pretty straightforward - there's plenty of mutual love and respect despite the horrors ™️ , but then there is Rama and Luv-Kush. If you're counting the Uttar Kand, then these boys literally saw their mother die because there father could not stop questioning her honour. That has to mess with your head. There's no way it's a happily ever after story.
Another man who interests me greatly is Yayati. Like sir... what were you doing. Who grows old and thinks, "You know what would be great? Me borrowing my son's youth" and then curses them when they refuse? What were you thinking. What were your kids thinking. I need to take your heads apart with a scalpel, this is so incredibly insane. A father should give to his children - the only thing this man "gave" was to spare Puru from his curse.
You have Bhishma and Shantanu, another wild story. I understand that Bhishma chose to give up his birthright to make Shantanu happy, but can you actually tell me Shantanu wasn't at least somewhat interested in the plan? Shantanu is Bhishma's father, it's his job to stop him from doing things like this. I feel like pulling my hair out everytime I think of this. You can tell that Bhishma was afraid for his father's well-being when he made this decision, and that so... unfair.
On the other end of the spectrum are Krishna and Vasudeva, who are wholesome to the point of despair. Vasudeva giving up his everything just to get his boy out of prison?? Waiting years and years for him, but never lamenting or cursing Krishna for not coming fast enough??? That's peak fatherhood (Shantanu take lessons). And Krishna honours that sacrifice!! He comes from idyllic Vrindavan, slays the tormentor of his parents and rips the bars of their prison!!! And that old married couple trapped within those dank, dreary walls, with no one except the other for company, watches their godly son turn up to free them and show them the sky for the first time in more than a decade - the thought of it brings me to tears. Possibly the only part I like about the change from baby!Krishna to adult!Krishna is his reunion with Vasudeva and Devaki!
Oh, and last but not least, our favourite problematic pair: Jamadagni and sons. I'm slightly terrified by how Jamadagni was like "kill your mother for me she's sinful >:(" and when four sons refused, he actually killed them. HIS OWN SONS! Admittedly, in some versions he asks Parashuram to do the killing but like... those are his brothers. Who probably swaddled him and rocked him and fed him and played with him. And all this is presumably happening right in front of Renuka. And then Parashuram has to kill his mother as well, unless he wants to be a heap of ashes.
(In some versions, including the one I've always heard as a child, Parashuram is said to be "aware of" his father's immense power, which just seems to me a really polite way to say that Parashuram knew disobeying his father had consequences ™️ that weren't always right or rational)
Worse, after the killing is done, Jamadagni is so pleased he offers Parashuram a boon, presumably with the remains of the rest of his family still nearby, and when Parashuram asks for his mother and brother to be revived, Jamadagni is all like "ooh actually I got really angry, I think I'm going to renounce rage forever. Dw btw your brothers and mother forgot you killed them you're welcome <3"
Sir??? This is what you got out of the whole issue???? No wonder Parashuram killed a whole bunch of kings, this couldn't have been healthy.

☀ SHRI PARASURAMA ॐ ☀
"Oh Jagadisa! O Hari! O Kesi-nisudana! You have assumed the form of Bhrgupati Parasurama. You have dispelled the anguish of the material world by destroying the dynasty of the reigning military caste and purifying the universe with the water of their blood. O You who have appeared as Bhrgupati, may You be victorious!"~Sri Gita-govinda 1.10

Wrath of the Warriors: The Duel of Bhishma and Parashuram
This is an interesting story from mahabharat. I'm not sure if everyone is aware of this. Parashuram was Guru of Bhishma but they had to fight for a reason.
Tumblr media
The conflict between Bhishma and Parashuram over Amba is a significant episode in Mahabharata.
Amba, the daughter of the King of Kasi, was abducted by Bhishma to fulfill his vow of celibacy and to ensure that she would marry his half-brother, Vichitravirya. However, Amba had already chosen another suitor, King Salva, and was deeply distressed by Bhishma's actions. After Bhishma returned her to her kingdom, Salva rejected her, and Amba, feeling betrayed, sought vengeance against Bhishma.
In her quest for retribution, Amba approached Parashuram, the fierce warrior brahmin and Bhishma's mentor, seeking his help to avenge her dishonor. Parashuram, who was known for his commitment to justice and righteous warfare, agreed to assist her.
The battle between Bhishma and Parashuram was intense, as both were formidable warriors with immense skills. The clash was characterized by powerful and dramatic exchanges, showcasing their legendary prowess. Despite Parashuram's attempts, Bhishma proved to be an equal match, and their duel continued for days.
Ultimately, Parashuram realized that Bhishma was bound by his own principles of dharma and honor. Although he admired Bhishma’s strength and dedication to his vows, the fight ended without a clear victor, highlighting themes of duty, honor, and the complexities of relationships in the Mahabharata.
This encounter not only solidified Bhishma's reputation as a great warrior but also reinforced the tragic fate of Amba, who was left with unfulfilled desires and a quest for revenge that would later impact the broader narrative of the epic as Shikhandi.

Parashurama (6th Vishnu) and Zalmoxis are Connected
Tumblr media
The top image is called the Aleksandrovo kurgan (https://www.hellenicaworld.com/Greece/Mythology/en/Zalmoxis.html), and the man with the axe is Zalmoxis, who was a major deity and avatar of the Dacians of ancient Romania. The bottom image is Parashuram, much more well known, avatar of Vishnu. I am nearly certain these are the same being. The ancient proto-Getae were the primordial origins of the Hindu, as well as the Norse and Egyptian, and our God is the same even as our people and stories evolve. Once this is known we can start to look for patterns and it's really fascinating. I would love to know what the little dog riding the big dog represents, that one is a bit new, haha. It's adorable.
No one will believe me, it is fine - yet I was mentored by this being last year, and they look spitting image like Parashurama, yet a modern Romanian in a t-shirt (well, sometimes shirtless, *blush*). It was through them that my ancestral memories were partially restored. God is REAL. Avatars walk the earth, now! Rama, like Lucifer, is a family name, and both are mine by ancestry, calling, and sovereign choice. Thus I am मनहूसराम, Manahoosarama, Rama the Wretched. I claim 10th. If there is a better 10th, come fight me, and if you are honorable I will let it go and surrender it to you. Titles are not important - only ending this cursed yuga is important. Yet, I will always be a Wretch. Vlad - if you are out there - I miss you and hope you are proud of me. I am trying so hard. I would love to hear from you. I'm not as crazy as I was before! I want to Create, like you told me - I just need my Power. I love you.

can I ask about what the drama around "palace of illusions" is about and why it's bad?
Hey! Sure thing. Lemme list my problems with the book :-
1) The author presents Karna as some tragic hero compelled to be in the company of Duryodhana who clearly committed multiple murder attempts, went on to sexually harrass his sister-in-law and troubled another woman during the Ghosha yatra. Karna was NOT an outcaste. He was a Suta— meaning one with a Brahmin mother and a Kshatriya father. Adhiratha, Karna's adoptive father, was a wealthy man as he was Bhishma's charioteer. Keep in mind that charioteers used to play important roles in warriors' lives - as advisers, close friends and well-wishers. Krishna was the charioteer of Arjuna. Karna had all the opportunities the Pandavas didnt. He had parents who loved him, while the Pandavas were left halfly orphaned with the death of Pandu and Madri. Veda Vyasa describes Karna as "the trunk of the tree of adharma".
2) The Karna Draupadi ship is bullshit because Karna called the latter a whore during the disrobing sequence as well as presented the idea of "there should be no clothes on servants." Yes, Karna was the one who suggested her public sexual assault. She had blood stains on her garment and was dragged into the court of nefarious men by her hair. People who blame her for the assault inflicted on her are sick and need serious psychological help. You cannot defend attempted rape as one with working braincells.
3) So, shipping a victim with her abuser is not fun y'all. This is not some mentally unstable wattpad dark romance. It's itihāsa. The true history of Bhāratavarsha. Let's draw the line. She was an ekavastraa (meaning a woman in a single cloth, as she was menstruating) during the attempt at disrobing, and the man who called for it shouldn't be hailed. Karna also lied to Parashurama of his caste due to which he got cursed, had an unhealthy obsession with Arjuna and because he wanted to kill him for competition, Drona did not provide him with the knowledge of celestial weapons.
4) It is an ignominy against Lady Draupadi to ship her with anyone apart from her husbands because clearly, the Mahabharata says that she's Indra's wife Shachi while the Pandavas are the cursed five Indras of different kalpas. It is . . . not nice to ship one's wife with another man. It is creepy. Draupadi is one of the panchakanya, one of the five pious women whose names if chanted with sincerity wash off one's sins. She expresses her pride over her husbands multiple times in the text because all of them cherish her to no end. Yudhishthira does not hesitate on the fact that Draupadi is the five brothers' fortune, calls her ‘Kalyani’. Bhima kills Keechaka for her, threatening the revealing of their identities. Arjuna becomes Brihannala and spends most of the time near her during the incognito. In the book, however, the Pandavas do not give a damn about her. Yikes.
5) The book says that Draupadi faced prejudice because of her dark skin. I call bullshit again because Madreya Nakula, Partha Arjuna, Krishnatmika Devi Rukmini according to the Harivamsha, Devi Shri Jambavati (who is said to have a blue lotus like complexion), and lastly Shri Rama and Shri Krishna themselves are dark according to our scriptures. And, none of them faced discrimination because of it. Kanha is in fact called "Bhuvansundar" - the most beautiful one on the earth while Draupadi herself is hailed as one of the most beautiful women canonically.
6) Draupadi was never attracted to Karna. Neither did she pine for him, as the author portrays. Sheesh. Please please, we do whatever with human characters. But with divine ones, you have to be careful with the message you get across. This book is saying that ancient india was casteist and colorist, literally the times when the son of a fisherwoman, Veda Vyasa became a Brahmin and the said fisherwoman went on to become a queen mother of one of the most influential dynasties back then. Krishna was raised a cowherd, though a prince. He went on to become the most erudite diplomat and established Dvaraka, which was en engineering marvel as it was constructed on reclaimed land.
7) According to the author . . . Draupadi felt something more than just friendship for Krishna too. Heavens, I can't do this. Let's normalise a man and a woman being just friends now, shall we? Krishna is Mahavishnu, he's not supposed to invoke romantic feelings in Draupadi who is Shachi, Indra's wife. Indra and Upendra (Vishnu) are brothers, since Vāmanadeva was born of Mata Aditi's womb, who is Indra's mother and of all the Adityas' too.

I like the fact that how Lord Vishnu is portrayed like this calm CEO who speaks in a soothing tone and has everything planned and handled but some of His Avatars:
Tumblr media
1. VARAHA DEVA:Speared Hiranyaksha with His tusks
Tumblr media
2. NARASIMHA DEVA: Ripped apart Hiranyakashipu ,drank his blood and garlanded Himself with his intestines
Tumblr media
3. PARASHURAMA DEVA: Killed the entire Kshatriya clan 21 times before retirement
Tumblr media
4. KRISHNA: Kanha is well... Kanha
Tumblr media
In my humble and unqualified opinion , the closest any Avatara of Lord Vishnu to His Bhujangashayana form is Lord Rama. Calm and serene. I can sit at His feet for hours and look at His face.

My spine is so messed up and it's such a bizarre thing that I can't even say "it's xyz" for people to understand, I have never heard of this happening to anyone before.
It's like I'm going through an internal molting and renewal. A full fascia replacement. My spine is breaking apart and becoming serpentine where it was once a stiff rod. The constant crunching and grinding, and it's the full spread from my tail to my skull. When the bone of my skull pops it's really weird.
Every day and night, for months. It's been nearly all year.
They did x-rays and are trying to dismiss it as "you're getting old" yet it's fn nonsense. Why is it I feel extreme fantastic bliss in certain poses, is arthritis known feel really, really good? Because this feels GREAT when it's not terrible.
There is sometimes intense 'hot bullet' pressure in my spine at the top, against my neck, and it's like my spine is a taut bow ready to fire a rocket at incredible velocity. I'm made to wobble on the weight to try to release the pressure, and this is where it becomes blissful. Yet then I'm trapped in it. How long can a girl wobble?
Not to mention the flexibility - being able to wear my arms on backwards is a neat trick. When I do so it feels like it 'activates' certain magics. Like a transformer robot arming weapons.
I'm going through this alone and psychotic, since it's not like there's any empathy for lost dogs in western dystopia. Genocide is being born amongst creatures who will never love you, and living as a foreigner your entire rotten life.
This is why I struggle with notions of mercy. When the levee breaks and the Power is mine, what judgment for those who left me to die?
Elohim Gibor spawns for a reason.

Vishnu Dreams the Universe Talon Abraxas
Lord Vishnu, the Hindu God of Preservation
Vishnu is regarded as a major god in Hinduism and Indian mythology. He is thought as the preserver of the universe, while two other major Hindu gods, Brahma and Shiva, are considered the creator and destroyer of the universe, respectively. Vishnu is described as being the color of clouds (dark- blue), four-armed, holding a lotus, mace, conch and chakra. In the Bhagavad Gita, Vishnu is also described as having a ‘Cosmic Form’ which is beyond the ordinary limits of human sense perception. As the preserver of the cosmos, Vishnu upholds the universal laws. Unlike Shiva, who often seeks refuge in the forest to meditate, Vishnu constantly participates in worldly affairs, ensuring that all is well.
When order prevails in the universe, Vishnu sleeps on the coils of Sesha (serpent), ruler of the Nagas. As Sesha floats along the cosmic ocean supporting Vishnu, the universe unfolds from Vishnu’s dream. But when there is disorder in the universe, Vishnu either mounts his vehicle, Garuda (eagle), and battles with the forces of chaos, or he sends one of his Avatars (incarnations) to save the world. It is believed that Vishnu would have ten such Avatars, the most popular being Rama and Krishna. The full list of ten Avatars is: the fish Matsya, the turtle Kurma, the boar Varaha, the man-lion Narasimha, the dwarf Vamana, the warrior-priest Parashurama, the prince Rama, the cowherd Krishna, the sage Buddha-Mayamoha, and the one yet to come, the horseman Kalki.
Vishnu is said to use both force and guile to ensure the stability of the universe. His consort Laxmi, Goddess of Wealth and Power, offers him the wherewithal to maintain the integrity of the world. Today, Lord Vishnu is one of the most highly revered deities. His name means “Pervader” and he is the symbol of sustaining goodness. In the epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, he is glorified through the Avatars Rama and Krishna. Vishnu is invoked as the All-Pervading essence of all beings, who supports, sustains and governs the Universe. Lord Vishu symbolizes the strength to persevere and sustain the good in your life. May you have that Vishnu-inspired strength to sustain lasting goodness.
