Dad’s Favorite Restaurant!

Last week (in March 2023), I wrote on my main blog about the birthday dinner that my sister and I treated my Dad to at Coastal Fish Company. While he loved his dinner, if he had his way, he would have gone to Pappadeaux instead liked we did a few years ago when the family traveled to Birmingham, Alabama (the closest Pappadeaux location) to celebrate his eightieth birthday. Apparently, he REALLY likes the New Orleans-themed restaurant chain. So in light of that, I am presenting a mini review of Pappadeaux.

Returning from a Thanksgiving trip from my sister Kathy's house in suburban Atlanta last year, my Dad wanted to make a stopover in Birmingham for lunch at Pappadeaux (by the way, "Pappadeaux" is part of a large conglomerate of restaurants owned by a Greek family named Pappas). Once we arrived and got seated, my Dad was anxious to order his favorite menu item, the seafood platter.

Consisting of fried catfish (among my Dad's favorites), shrimp, fried oysters and stuffed crab, the seafood platter is a lot of food to consume. While I can't vouch for the quality of it, the fact that my Dad would rather travel 250 miles from Memphis to have this says a lot about the entrée. Then again, when you like something that much (like I did decades ago when I trekked a hundred miles from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Denver to have brunch at a LePeep restaurant), you embrace it lovingly. Needless to say, he really enjoyed his lunch, making my sister Kim and I very happy.

For myself, I got the Mississippi Catfish Opelousas with a glass of white wine (Pinot Grigio). From what I can remember, the "Opelousas" (named after a town in Louisiana) was blackened catfish smothered in gravy (aka "lemon garlic butter sauce") that had oysters and crab in it, with shrimp and "dirty" rice as sides. The gravy/sauce added a sour sweet flavor to the catfish in a way that made it delightful, especially when paired with white wine. The the shrimp and rice tasted as well as I expected, contributing to a delicious meal that I enjoyed.

As for my sister Kim, she got a plate of shrimp and spinach that I couldn't discern from Pappadeaux's menu. Whatever it was, I'm confident that Kim liked it.

In the end, all of us got fulfillment from our meals and left Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen happy. I can see why my Dad will literally go out of his way to his favorite restaurant. The food and service at Pappadeaux is excellent, and gets a thumbs up from my family. I hope someday that Memphis gets a Pappadeaux restaurant, but my family will be making frequent trips to Birmingham until it does.

FYI: The "location" feature on the website isn't great. When I typed "Memphis, TN" in the website's search bar, it yielded nothing. So if you're looking for a Pappadeaux that's close to you, you're better off Googling it. By the way, assuming that the website is correct, Pappadeaux doesn't have a restaurant in New Orleans (even though N'awlins doesn't need it 🙂).

Shopping Mall near Carrollton, TX

Introduction

Carrollton, TX is a great place to shop. You can find almost anything you need and want at one of the many shopping malls in the area. I have listed some of my favorites below.

Carrollton Square Mall

The Carrollton Square Mall is located in Carrollton, TX, and opened in 1968. It has over 100 stores including Macy's, Dillard's, and JCPenney. The mall also has a food court with fast food restaurants like Chick-Fil-A and Starbucks as well as sit-down restaurants like Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen & Bar and California Pizza Kitchen. There are also several children's play areas throughout the mall so you can spend time there with your family while they play!

The Carrollton Square Mall has many unique features that make it stand out from other shopping centers:

A carousel (you can ride this if you want to get dizzy)

Kids play area where they can run around while you shop or eat lunch at one of their many restaurants

Willowbend Mall

Willowbend Mall is a shopping mall located in Plano, Texas. It is the only enclosed shopping mall in the city of Plano and it's also one of two malls within its city limits (the other being The Shops at Willow Bend). The mall opened on October 12th, 1977 with anchor stores JCPenney and Montgomery Ward as well as 30-40 other stores.

Willowbend has undergone several renovations since opening including an expansion that added Dillard's as well as other retailers such as Old Navy, Bath & Body Works, and Abercrombie & Fitch. Other renovations included adding skylights over its courtyard area which was previously covered by a large skylight-like glass ceiling made up of five separate panels.

Las Colinas Town Center

Las Colinas Town Center is a shopping mall located in Irving, Texas. The mall opened in 2001 and has more than 200 stores. It's located at the intersection of Interstate 635 and State Highway 114.

The Shops at Willow Bend

The Shops at Willow Bend is a large shopping mall in Plano, Texas. It is owned by Simon Property Group and opened in 1990. In 2007 it was expanded by adding a new wing with several high-end stores including Neiman Marcus Last Call Studio and Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH.[1]

Willow Bend Commons Shopping Center is a large shopping mall located in Plano, Texas. It was built in 1980 and has over 200 stores including Macy's (which is the largest store), JCPenney, and Dillard's. The mall also houses several restaurants such as Texas de Brazil Steakhouse; Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen; California Pizza Kitchen; Cheesecake Factory and many more.

The hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am until 9:00 pm while Sundays they open from 11:00 am until 6:00 pm.*

Southlake Town Square

Southlake Town Square is a shopping center in Southlake, Texas. It is located at the corner of Southlake Blvd and State Street in Southlake, Texas. The mall opened in 1987 with four anchor stores: Neiman Marcus, Lord & Taylor (now Saks Fifth Avenue), Dillard's, and JCPenney. The mall was expanded by an additional wing with Borders Books & Music added as an anchor tenant in 1998.[1]

In December 2013 it was announced that Simon Property Group would acquire 50% interest in the mall from General Growth Properties as part of its plan to expand its portfolio.[2] General Growth continues to manage operations on behalf of Simon until 2023 when control will transfer completely over to them.[3]

Metro Church of God

Metro Church of God is a non-denominational Christian church that focuses on helping people find and grow in their faith. They offer many different programs for children, youth, and adults. Their youth group is called "Metro Kids" and they have an after-school program called "Athletic Ministries." is a church that meets in the heart of Birmingham. They are a group of people who love God, love each other, and want to share that love with others. With in-flight alcohol service limited or unavailable, travelers in Houston have seemingly taken matters into their own hands, with pre-flight booze consumption currently accounting for a significant slice of alcohol sales in the region.

Based on data compiled by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts for the month of June, alcohol sales at the Pappas family of establishments in Hobby Airport were higher than at any other bar or restaurant in Harris County, as reported by the Houston Chronicle.

Liquor, wine, and beer sales amounted to $992,780 at the Pappas Bar-B-Q, Pappas Burgers, Pappasito’s, and Pappadeaux locations in the terminals.

With two locations in the airport, Pappasito’s, and its Margarita menu, are all-time favorites in the city. With high-end tequila options, and a cocktail menu that hits all the local highlights (Ranch Water, Sangria, and Daiquiris), the bar at the Mexican restaurant is especially popular.

As ranked by the Chronicle, Little Woodrow’s location in Tomball (a city on the northwestern edge of the Houston metropolitan area) came in a distant second, with $620,898 in sales. Little Woodrow’s appears again in fourth place, with its Midtown location racking up $547,693 in booze revenue for the month.

While the numbers are very close between high-performing businesses, Pappas’s airport locations benefited from the Chronicle choosing to define its five restaurants at the airport as a single establishment.

Definitions and number-splitting aside, whichever way you slice it, that’s still a lot of Tito’s and Shiner Bock.
