A warm and very rainy Thursday today. Lookin’ at snow cams of my local ski slopes.
Kinda disappointing seeing my childhood ski slope Paoli Peaks hardly tried to remain open this winter, while Perfect North Slopes is chugging along squeezing out every operating day it can, despite it still raining. Global warming sure is hitting hard.

Screenwriter Dennis Paoli talks about his screenplay SUITABLE FLESH, based on “The Thing On The Doorstep” by H. P. Lovecraft.
Producer and actress Barbara Crampton placed screenwriter Dennis Paolis screenplay SUITABLE FLESH, based on “The Thing On The Doorstep” by H. P. Lovecraft, in the hands of director of Joe Lynch and the trio delivered a cinematic experience similar to 1985’s “Re-Animator.” With a few updates to Lovecraft’s tale we meet psychiatrist Elizabeth Derby who is confronted by Asa, a young man who recounts a strange tale of abuse by his father. Derby's interest is peaked and she becomes obsessed with helping her new young patient, who she feels is suffering an extreme personality disorder. Investigating his bizarre case leads her into a world of necromancy, placing her and her loved ones in danger. Her life spirals out of control as she tries to escape a horrific fate.
Screenwriter, television writer, playwright, college professor and friend and collaborator with the late director Stuart Gordon, Dennis Paoli has made a career of adapting the fiction of H.P. Lovecraft, and Edgar Allen Poe, taking the horror genre by storm with his 1985 film “Re-Animator” - based on “Herbert West–Reanimator" by H. P. Lovecraft, an instant cult classic that made fan favorites of director Stuart Gordon and actors Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton. He has written or co-written five of Gordon's films and collaborated with Gordon on the stage productions of Bleacher Bums, Re-Animator: The Musical, and Nevermore: An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe, and on two episodes of the Showtime horror television series Masters of Horror.
SUITABLE FLESH will be available in Select Theaters and Rental October 27th, 2023.
The music heard in the background during this segment is by composer Steve Moore, who scored SUTIBLE FLESH.

Important Tips to Destroy Mosquitoes Completely in Residential and Commercial Spaces
Mosquitoes are challenging tasks to eliminate nowadays even if we are having various pest control and repellents. Completely eradicating mosquitoes worldwide is a complex task that would require significant efforts on a global scale. While it may not be feasible to eliminate them entirely, there are several measures you can take to control mosquito populations and reduce their impact. Here are some approaches:
Eliminate breeding sites: Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, so eliminating any stagnant unnecessary water around your home is Vital. Routinely empty and clean containers like flower pots, and buckets. Make sure that gutters are clean and free of debris to prevent water pooling.
Utilize larvicides: In areas where standing water cannot be completely exited, such as ponds or larger bodies of water, you can use larvicides. These are chemicals that destroy mosquito larvae before they mature into size increased. However, when we use them according to the instructions provided and follow safety things.
Install mosquito nets and screens: Use window, and door screens, bed nets, or mesh screens on doors and windows to prevent mosquitoes from entering your house. This is particularly important during peak mosquito active time, such as dusk and dawn.
Use insect repellents: Apply mosquito repellents containing Deet, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus to exposed skin when spending time outdoors. These repellents can help reduce mosquito bites.
Encourage natural predators: Create an environment that attracts natural mosquito predators like bats, birds, and dragonflies. These creatures feed on mosquitoes and can help control their population. Planting native flowers, providing bat houses, and adding bird feeders can help attract them.
Utilize mosquito traps: Mosquito traps are designed to attract and capture mosquitoes. They use a combination of carbon dioxide, light, and other attractions to mosquitoes into the trap, where they are then either killed or trapped. Research and select a suitable trap based on your needs and the specific mosquito species in the surrounding area.

The Belgian government is stepping up its fight against organised crime and the drug smuggling that goes with it by hiring more customs agents at the Port of Antwerp.
As Europe’s second largest port, millions of shipping containers pass through its gates every year, which is why it is often called the gateway to the continent, alongside the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
"For the last five years, we have been breaking (drugs) records here in Antwerp," Florence Angelici, spokesperson for the Belgian Federal Public Finance Service told Euronews. "Last year, there were 89 tonnes of cocaine seized here in Antwerp. It was a very big year, but still, we see the numbers rising."
"We are currently hiring 100 new customs agents and we are about to build new scanning devices directly inside the terminals and the aim is to scan 100% of the risk containers."
Some 41 tonnes were recovered by authorities in 2017, with the number rising year-on-year to reach 65.5 tonnes in 2020.
Seizures hit a peak in 2021, with 89 metric tonnes seized after investigators cracked the encrypted messaging service Sky ECC and intercepted a billion messages during a two-year investigation.
War on drugs is already lost
For Professor Letizia Paoli, an expert in organised crime at Catholic University Leuven, the war on drugs is already lost and Europe should start focusing instead on the damage caused.
"The war against [drug] trafficking cannot be won," she told Euronews. "And I think that police forces all over Europe should focus not so much on reducing the flows because in areas such as the European Union with open borders, it's really hard to stick to the use of laws.
"Instead they should, as much as possible, try to reduce the harms associated with drug trafficking itself, the harms of violence and the harms of corruption."
Paoli added that an EU-wide discussion on the legalisation of some narcotics should be explored.
"At the same time, (we should) start a debate on whether or not some drugs should be legalised in such a way as to reduce the revenues of organised criminals."
But as drug seizures have increased, so has violence linked to organised crime.
Just last month, Belgium's Justice Minister, Vincent Van Quickenborne, was caught up in a foiled kidnapping plot linked to organised crime in the Netherlands.
He described it as “narco-terrorism” with others even calling Belgium a "narcostate". Paoli, however, said this definition is unjustified.
"There is no reason to define Belgium as a narcostate. There are huge differences with real narcostates, such as Mexico, for example," she explained.
"In Belgium, in the Netherlands, the public administration has more integrity, so there are very few cases known of civil servants that have been corrupted by organised criminals."
Paoli added that the record cocaine recovered last year at the Port of Antwerp nearly matched the whole EU's yearly consumption and still prices across the continent did not increase.
In fact, she said the cost of cocaine even decreased in some cases, showing that supply is still readily flowing through Europe, despite police seizures.

Napoléon and La Fayette in 1791
I have gone through all of the 15 volumes of Napoléon Bonaparte - Correspondance générale, published by the Fondation Napoléon in search of any letter related to La Fayette - I think I found Napoléon’s first every reference to La Fayette. In a letter to Matteo Buttafoco, dated January 25, 1791 he wrote:
Un roi qui ne désire jamais que le bonheur de ses compatriotes, éclairé par M. La Fayette, ce constant ami de la liberté, put dissiper les intrigues d’un ministre perfide que la vengeance inspira toujours à vous nuire.
My translation:
A king who desires nothing but the happiness of his compatriots, enlightened by M. La Fayette, the constant friend of liberty, was able to dispel the intrigues of a perfidious minister whom revenge always inspired to harm one.
And, still in the same letter but a bit further down:
My translation:
O Lameth! O Robespierre! O Pétion! O Volney! O Mirabeau! O Barnave! O Bailly! O La Fayette! here is the man [Pascal/Pasquale Paoli] who dares to sit next to you all! All dripping with the blood of his brothers, soiled by crimes of all kinds, he presents himself confidently under a general's jacket, iniquitous reward for his crimes! He dares to call himself a representative of the nation, he who sold it, and you suffer it! He dares to raise his eyes, lend his ears to your speeches and your suffer it!
A little bit of background to this letter. It was written in early 1791 - La Fayette’s popularity had lessened a bit after its peak at the Fête de la Fédération but we also have not yet reached the bottom-mark after the Champ de Mars massacres. Napoléon called La Fayette a “constant friend of liberty” and generally expressed a great deal of respect and admiration for the Marquis. Ironically, it was exactly this love for liberty that would set La Fayette and Napoléon at odds with each other later on. It would not be too long until this friendly tone would cease.
Pasquale Paoli was a Corsican politician and military leader. He was later forced to go into exile in England where he became seriously pro-British and even received a pension from George III. When an amnesty was passed during the French Revolution, he returned to Corsica and participated again in the islands politics. He was greatly admired because nobody really knew about his pro-British sentiments. He participated in the French Revolution and sided with the Royalists. Still, he was greatly admired. When Napoléon attempted to write the history of Corsica, he reached out to Paoli to get his help and opinion. The differences between the two men became quickly obvious. Paoli would later part from the Revolution after the trial of the King, would manipulate the war between Britain and France in favour of the British and finally go into a second exile in England. The recipient of the letter, Matteo Buttafoco, was one of Paoli’s greatest political opponents.

Remigio Ducros & Daniela Casa - the golden couple of the Library Music
youtube
I have been collecting Library Music for a few years now, every month spending my little salary in obscure records I don't need (naaaa, joking, of course I do need them!). Complex music composed by underground musicians, whose lives were often a puzzle. What’s not to be obsessed with?! In many cases, these library music themes are linked to primordial memories, often associated with tv shows I used to watch when I was a kid - stuck in my mind because of some opening or ending titles I vaguely remember.
youtube
Over the years, I learned how to love two authors: Remigio Ducros and Daniela Casa. Both different but complementary, both sophisticated but in different ways. The reason why I match them in this is article is merely practical: they were a married couple and they often released albums collectively. Their artistic partnership was strong and intellectually stimulating, so much that the work of the duo can be analysed together. I decided to talk about this with Valentina Ducros, their daughter, on a Monday evening during the lockdown in June 2020, via Zoom. She is friendly and polite, opening up about her past, telling me great stories about the family as well as sharing some precious audio. What a bless! Valentina is a singer and dancer herself, singing on the Italian National TV in several shows, releasing her music and singing for the composer Franco Micalizzi and his band.
youtube
Daniela Casa is well renowned nowadays for her sophisticated productions in the intricate Italian Library Music world, she is the author of several masterpieces, spanning from Bossanova-like to chamber music, from rock and roll to pop and much more. But her musical career, though, started in the 70s when she was adapting famous English or American songs into Italian (such as Petula Clark for instance). During her school years, Mrs Casa was a pupil of Domenico Guaccero, a very famous Italian composer, and she studied guitar with the Maestro Claudio De Angelis. Mr Guaccero was notable for numerous compositions within the Associazione Nuova Consonanza group, a contemporary avant-garde music group established in the 60s and 70s in Rome, whose important members were Ennio Morricone, Egisto Macchi among others. During his life, he composed theatrical Operas, ballets, Chamber Music and Symphonic Music. Mrs Casa absorbed these influences, developing her unique taste and experimenting into the Library Music productions or, as it was called in Italy, "Sonorizzazioni".
youtube
She was also a singer herself, producing and recording songs; I am particularly obsessed by her version of "Senza Fine" by Gino Paoli - IHMO better than the original. Her influences spanned from Roman, Milanese and Neapolitan folk songs to jazz, blues, disco and to Brazilian folk music, such as Samba and Bossa Nova. It was common in 60s Italy to hear Brazilian influences in the local music, as many Brazilian musicians moved to Rome in 1964, because of the military dictatorship of the South American country.
youtube
At the end of the 60s, Mrs Casa was the lead member of the first all-female beat band at the Piper Club in Rome, and later she founded a disco/blues band called Dani & Gepi, with her husband Remigio Ducros at the saxophone. During the 70s, the married couple produced songs for popular artists, Mina, Dalida, Gianni Morandi and others, they also played in the band Gli Idoli, the band of Lucio Dalla. As the partnership of the duo was well-oiled, at the end of the 70s, the couple decided to write, produce and release their music under the name Mariposa, mixing orchestration, bossa nova, soundtracking and much more: a very original take on music for children.
One of the fist Library production of the duo is dated 1971 and named 'Lo Sport" together with the musician Gian Piero Ricci. The triple (sic) record is outstanding, with each musician scoring a set of sport. Casa is showing her talent in each of the compositions. Remigio Ducros as well is sonorizing several sports, I love "Canottaggio", an alt-jazz composition with Morricone-like sounds and instruments.
Mr Ducros, a Genoese pianist living in Rome, released in 1970 "La Palla è Rotonda" and "Tempo di Naja", with jazz and rhythm and blues influences. While Mrs Casa was interested in South American sounds, Mr Ducros was attracted by North American productions, such as jazz and funk. 1972 "La Fatica" shows an experimental and ambient side of the author. "I Sentieri del Mondo" is part of a series that explores the sound of the world music. and "T.S.T. '73 Cronaca" is more songwriting in style and mood. "America Amore Amaro" is an absolute banger of a funky record, you must own this in your collection. "America Giovane" has been recently re-pressed and is worth every single penny. "Misticismo" represents a step into the eastern philosophies by the author: spiritual music for mystic documentaries. If Marco Ferreri would have needed a score for a movie on the claustrophobic bureaucracy, he surely would have used the wonderful "Governo... Padroni...". On an interview Valentina shared with me, Ducros tells the story of when he was playing on piano bars "I was playing with one hand only, as with the other you have to shake hands of the people or holding a glass, it was a bar after all" - showing a great sense of humor. there were many more Library records composed by Ducros, one of the latest is “Cuba Libre”, a central america inspired record, way before Buena Vista Social Club even existed. There is another composed together by the couple and it is called “Acqua Passata”: stunning chamber music with a hint of nostalgia.
While Ducros was producing more scores and “sonorizzazioni” for tv, Casa was focusing on contemporary classic music and music for Art Exhibitions. “Italia Minima” and “Vernissage” are beautifully difficult records. The astractism of Casa reached its peak with thise latest records: elegant chamber music.
I believe that the combination of their talents created something unique in the Library Music world, defining a style and highlighting the roman school, prominent in Italy. I am not the only one who believe this, look at this...

SUITABLE FLESH - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: RLJE Films & Shudder
SYNOPSIS: Psychiatrist Elizabeth Derby is confronted by a young man, Asa, who recounts a strange tale of abuse by his father. Derby's interest is peaked and she becomes obsessed with helping the young patient, who she feels is suffering an extreme personality disorder. As she investigates his bizarre case it leads her into a world of necromancy, placing her and her loved ones in danger. Her life spirals out of control as she tries to escape a horrific fate.
REVIEW: From short stories to his longer works, the fiction of one of the masters of classic horror, H.P. Lovecraft has inspired the imagination of numerous filmmakers. In 1985 director Stuart Gordon and writer Dennis Paoli raised the bar on Lovecraft adaptations with their horror dark comedy “Re-Animator.” Over the years they worked together on two other Lovecraft tales, “From Beyond” and “Dagon,” good films but not quite capturing the tone and energy of “Re-Animator.”
Prior to Stuart Gordon’s passing in 2020, screenwriter Paoli was working on an adaptation of Lovecraft’s "The Thing on the Doorstep.” With the director’s chair left empty by his passing, actress/producer Barbara Crampton reached out to director Joe Lynch. Lynch read Paoli’s script and offered the screenwriter a few suggestions, including changing the lead characters from male to female. The screenwriter meditated on it, made some changes and the project became SUITABLE FLESH.
The screenplay is quintessential Dennis Paoli. He does a splendid job of creating characters, the focal being Elizabeth Derby. She is drawn into the madness of Asa Waite, and she in turn draws in her friend and colleague Daniella Upton. The plot provides those kinky comedic moments mixed in among the horror that harken back to “Re-Animator.” The plot embraces contemporary elements as it puts a fresh spin on the Lovecraft tale, maintaining the core elements of Lovecraft’s story.
Joe Lynch does an excellent on paying homage to Stuart Gordon as he puts his own spin on the material. The production values are minimalistic and capture a feel of the late 80’s and 90’s genre films. The editing maintains a brisk pacing and the film feels shorter than the 100 minutes. There are some great framing and angles that add to the tone and atmosphere to the film.Lynch creates a sensuality in the film without the exploitation and nudity of Gordon’s films. Composer Steve Moore’s score is perfectly suited to the film. A classic score in its own right but not quite as iconic as Richard Bands work on “Re-Animator” or “From Beyond.”
SUITABLE FLESH is a solid ensemble cast. Everyone has to make bold character swings as they in turn become possessed by this malevolent entity that may or may not be Asa’s father, but something more sinister. Barbara Crampton and Heather Graham have some fabulous scenes together and the duo have an excellent struggle towards the end of the film. The ladies, under the direction of Joe Lynch, are the rock and roll of the film. That’s not to distract from Bruce Davidson or Judah Lewis, who I enjoyed in “The Babysitter” and “The Babysitter: Killer Queen,” but Grampton and Graham are a tour de force.
There is an aspect of Joe Lynch & Dennis Paoli’s adaptation of Lovecraft’s “The Thing On The Doorstep” that also feels reminiscent of Roland Topor’s novel The Tenant that was the basis of he Polanski film of the same name. Both deal with questions of identity, sexuality and the other. Polanski’s is more surreal, Lynch’s is more occult, and both are horrific in their own right. Having viewer several of Lynch’s films and television episodes, he never disappoints. With SUITABLE FLESH he demonstrates his knowledge and love of the genre. He is a talented technician who is equally as skilled at procuring marvelous performances from his cast. He is a unique talent who hopefully will not become corrupted by the study system as he is destined to direct a Marvel or Star Wars film.

Bulbbul movie review: Pretty but problematic, Anushka Sharma’s Netflix film is a flawed fairytale - bollywood
https://liveindiatimes.com/bulbbul-movie-review-pretty-but-problematic-anushka-sharmas-netflix-film-is-a-flawed-fairytale-bollywood/
Bulbbul Director – Anvita Dutt Cast – Tripti Dimri, Rahul Bose, Avinash Tiwary, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Paoli Dam
Over-directed but underwritten, Bulbbul is a visually striking film that is let down by a weak script.
From debutante director Anvita Dutt (whose track record as dialogue writer includes the runaway hit Queen but also Shaandaar, Kambakkht Ishq and Housefull), Netflix’s Bulbbul is the second streaming film this month, after Amazon’s Gulabo Sitabo, that is set inside a foreboding mansion. But while the dignified ‘haveli’ in Shoojit Sircar’s movie took on a life of its own, the one in Bulbbul, like the film itself, can’t help but feel artificial.
As an industry, Bollywood has been famously incapable of producing good horror cinema, with the odd exceptions, of course. Invariably, horror in India is combined with other genres such as musical or romance — ghosts, you see, mustn’t get in the way of the films’ box office potential. So for Bulbbul to whole-heartedly embrace its Gothic horror origins — it’s Kamal Amrohi’s Mahal by way of Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak — is rather refreshing.

In 1881, Bulbbul, a precocious girl with an appetite for scary stories is married into a wealthy ‘zamindar’ family. In a deft move it is revealed that her husband isn’t the boy Satya, with whom she’s struck a quick friendship, but rather Satya’s sinister-looking elder brother Indranil, the Thakur, played by Rahul Bose. The Thakur has a twin, Mahendra, who is developmentally challenged and is married to a conniving woman named Binodini. Fate has forever sentenced her to play second fiddle to Bulbbul in the household, something that Binodini, the ‘chhoti bahu’, is very bothered by.
The characters established, the films jumps 20 years into the future. Satya, on his way back to the ‘haveli’ after having studied law in London, is informed that a series of mysterious deaths have taken place in the time that he has been away. The villagers seem to believe that it is the doing of a witch that haunts the surrounding forest. Satya, in proper Jonathan Harker mode, dismisses the claims as old wives’ tales.
But a lot has changed in the years that Satya has been gone. His brother Mahendra has been killed in his sleep, and his other brother, the Thakur, has disappeared. Bulbbul, meanwhile, is no longer the spirited young girl that she used to be; she has now fully embraced her life as the ‘Thakurain’ of the house, lounging on settees all day, being fed paan and sherbet, exuding a playful yet unsettlingly self-assured energy.
It doesn’t take a genius to put two and two together, but Bulbbul certainly treats its audience as if it is the first film they’ve seen in their lives.

Because the characters are so thinly written and the surprises so carelessly telegraphed, Dutt’s film is forced to rely more heavily on technical details. For instance, it would have been wonderful to explore the character of Binodini with more patience. She’s an interesting foil to Bulbbul; entrapped instead of empowered, scheming instead of self-reliant.
Swathed perpetually by the red glow of a blood moon, the nighttime sequences in Bulbbul are undeniably gorgeous, besides a couple of noticeable instances where cinematographer Siddharth Diwan’s camera basically breaks character, and surrenders its otherwise stately presence in favour of flashy handheld mayhem. It simply doesn’t gel. You’ll notice it, too.
Bulbbul also features a lush, orchestral score by the great Amit Trivedi, evoking memories of his terrific (but of iffy integrity) work in Vikramaditya Motwane’s Lootera. In a way, there is a strain of melancholy that runs through both movies, and Trivedi is able to capture it.
But employing a needlessly non-linear narrative turns out to be an exercise in futility, because virtually every twist can be seen coming from a mile away. And because so much of the film feels so deliberately planned, Dutt routinely finds herself drowning in style over substance, her script devoid of spontaneity.

A couple of scenes in particular, both involving violence against women, are questionably staged. Instead of evoking anger, or even repulsion, by shooting the first scene in stylised slow-motion that would made Zack Snyder twitch in ecstasy, Dutt essentially distracts the audience’s attention from the horror that is unfolding and turns it instead towards the immaculate beauty of her frames. The second scene, involving a rape, goes on for way longer than it has any reason to. What this does is play into the (problematic) trope that in order to blossom, a woman must first be (violently) broken. There’s a reason why the rape-revenge subgenre of horror is consider outdated.

I admire the fact that producers Anushka Sharma and her brother Karnesh are continuing to champion genre cinema, despite falling short of expectations more often than not. The disappointment is only amplified because the sibling duo’s brilliant Paatal Lok is still so fresh in our minds. But even though Bulbbul never quite takes flight, neither does it fall to its death. It’s no Mrs Serial Killer. But it isn’t Sacred Games either.
