Emperor scorpion was out of her burrow today! Normally I overflow the water dish but I do also mist the entire enclosure when it starts to dry out. I had taken some photos and then was going to mist, it's a super fine light mister and I figured she would leave if she didn't like it. I don't recommend spraying your scorpion directly, but with the light mister sweeping over the enclosure she ended up with a fine dusting of water. She pulled in her pedipalps a bit but didn't seem too bothered, and you can really see all her setae now!

“I’m Devinder Crousley, and this–is Delving Into Darkness.”
Tumblr media
“Or, at least, into a lovely twilight, soon to be dark. I’ve come to Egypt to visit a couple old Oxford mates, and happened upon some rather curious rumors circulating amongst the locals. As I understand, not far outside the town is an area referred to as “Serket’s Domain,” where one might be able to find some scorpions of unusual size. But not just any supernaturally oversized arthropodic cryptids! These are, so I’ve heard, potentially descended from those in the tale Isis and the Seven Scorpions. And–oh, what luck!”
Tumblr media
"A spectacular specimen, indeed! Its claws alone appear to be over 20 centimetres, the typical length of the entire body of a Pandinus imperator–or, emperor scorpion–one of the largest mundane scorpion species. And while standard scorpion chitin will fluoresce under UV light, this one appears to have unique striations, glowing even without the use of my blacklight–in multiple, atypical colors, akin to a railroad worm’s bioluminescence! Fascinating… Primarily prominent are fiery orange markings, located on both the stinger and cephalothorax, presenting as a large dorsal spot with eight to ten radial lines–almost like a sun with rays. Perhaps these markings might be used amongst others of the species as a form of signaling, possibly for general communication or mating purposes? However, an additional green spot just above its two front-facing eyes is relatively quite small. While it appears to me not unlike an illustrated "third eye" of sorts in combination with the surrounding orange markings, it’s possible the green mark acts as a form of lure for prey–bugger."
Tumblr media
“It would appear Isis’ seven scorpions–or rather their descendants–are as formidable as you’d expect from the legend! I had assumed the initial specimen was an adult, but I now believe it more likely a juvenile, as many others have arrived that seem to be, um–they’re a few metres long! I shall endeavor to report further observations and provide more accurate measurements once I’m at a safer distance, but for now, it’s time to go! Until next time, dev-iners!”
(I had an idea to have seven scorpions chase me for a SWL anniversary contest, but it evolved into a short Redfall-flavored cryptid-hunting pseudo-eposide!)

This scorpion is able to hold its breath for up to six days, can go a whole year without eating, can climb practically any surface, fluoresce under ultraviolet light, which means it reflects the light and appears to glow.
The emperor scorpion, Pandinus imperator, is a large and impressive arachnid that lives in the rainforests and savannas of West Africa. It can grow up to 20 cm in length and weigh up to 28 g, making it one of the largest scorpions in the world. It has a shiny black exoskeleton, powerful pincers, and a venomous stinger at the end of its long tail. However, its venom is mild and rarely used, as it prefers to crush its prey with its claws.
The emperor scorpion is a carnivore that feeds mainly on insects and termites, and can survive for a long time without food or water. It is a burrowing animal that likes to hide under leaf litter, logs, or termite mounds. It is also a social animal that can live in groups with other scorpions.
The emperor scorpion is also protected by CITES to prevent overexploitation and habitat loss. It has a unique feature that makes it glow green or blue under ultraviolet light, which may help it find mates or avoid predators.

So, as those of you who witnessed my spiral in my Chima Discord server know, I recently realized that my Tales of Chima series had some fascinating parallels with Egyptian mythology and divines therein, which is fun because that's one of the pantheons I worship and honor as a polytheist.
Well, I decided to be a lot more intentional from the get-go when it came to mythological and religious references in Chimahaven, starting with the surnames of our protagonists:
Emily and Onyx Zephyras: Derived from Zephyros, the Greek god of the west wind and one of the Anemoi. This gives them both a connection between the two of them to all four classical elements (with Emily having earth-as-plants and Onyx using steam magic, a combination of fire and water). It also gives Onyx a stronger connection to their elemental Prismari college.
Dennari Areia: Derived from the epithet Areia, meaning "the Warlike", used for the goddesses Aphrodite and Athena in ancient Greece. This emphasizes Dennari's combat magic specialty and ties her more into her Lorehold college. Her first name is also a reference to the denarius, the standard Roman silver coin introduced during the Second Punic War.
Eris Notus: Derived from Notos, the Greek god of the south wind and one of the Anemoi. This gives her a connection to both her air/wind elemental magic and the fire-based powers granted to her by her strange connection to the Phoenixes.
Scorm Imperator: Unlike the others, Scorm's surname isn't derived from a Greek or Roman god. It's instead derived from the scientific name for the emperor scorpion, Pandinus imperator, because that's what I've clocked the Scorpion Tribe as. This has nothing to do with his magic in this setting, he's just here.
Cragger Ponteid: Cragger's surname is derived from the Greek primordial ocean god, Pontos, who was the biggest ocean guy on the block before Okeanos showed up (and then later Poseidon). This ties Cragger back into his home swamp and into his water elemental magic.
Razar Pheletes: Razar's surname comes from an epithet for Hermes (Φηλητης, Phêlêtês, of which he is the only bearer) that means "Thief", "Robber", and "Rustler". It felt quite fitting, especially since Razar's magic is vocal instead of elemental in nature.
Laval Vestalia: Derived from the ancient Roman festival of Vestalia, which ran from June 7th to June 15th and honored the hearth goddess Vesta. Since Laval has the most prominent fire elemental magic of our protagonists (besides possibly Onyx), I felt that depicting it as the fire of the hearth was a pretty neat idea. There's a lot of focus on fire as destroyer in element-based media, so I wanted to take a different angle with Laval's magic.
So, building on this, most of the symbolism I'll use for Chimahaven will be rooted in Greek mythology/religion (of which I identify most closely with in my honoring), while adding some from later Roman mythology/religion for a little extra...texture, we'll say.

Also, a little world building, the Scorpioni kings were called Pandinus Imperator. What's it mean? It's the scientific name for a scorpion. It's the Emperor Scorpion.
I've been trying to think of the last king's name for a while as well. I think I'm going with Chelicera. I took it from the name of the subphylum (Chelicerata) that class Arachnida is in.
This continues my naming scheme for Scorpia's family since I named one of her kids Artho, after Arthropoda, the phylum that Chelicerata is under.

Sometimes I see scorpions in pet stores. Is their venom removed?

Most scorpions like most spiders sold in shops pose no serious health threat, all it takes is knowing how to handle them and you wont have a problem.
Take this chap;
Look at the size of those Personalized NFL Arizona Cardinals Hawaiian Shirt New Arrivals Trending Aloha Shirt. This is the Emperor or Imperial scorpion (Pandinus imperator), he looks pretty dangerous to humans doesn't he? But he isn't, his sting is like that of a bee.
Now take a look at this chap;

Isn't quite clear why scorpions glow under UV light. In 2012, a researcher at Oklahoma University suggested that their bodies absorb UV light, triggering a reaction to avoid it, thereby helping them hide better at night. http://bit.ly/3n2V4Pb [Pandinus imperator]
