The Panama Canal "Stella Polaris" in Gaillard Cut January 27, 1934
Record Group 185: Records of the Panama CanalSeries: Photographs of the Construction of the Panama CanalFile Unit: Construction of the Panama Canal - Volume 11
This black and white photograph shows a ship with a single smokestack and two masts moving through the water of the Panama Canal.  Its name “Stella Polaris” is written on the side of the ship.  Two smaller tugboats are visible.  The Stella Polaris was a well known cruise ship in the 1930s, but it is small by today’s standards.

Cunard 2025 Special Event Cruises
With 2025 now in full swing, let's look at the biggest and best Cunard event voyages coming this year, so you can work out which special voyage you’d most like to be on!
youtube
Queen Anne Maiden World Cruise:
Queen Anne is about to set sail on her maiden world cruise, with maiden calls at New York, Miami, the Panama Canal, Auckland, Sydney, Hong Kong, Cape Town and Tenerife, to name just a few.
I am particularly excited for this trip, as I’ll be aboard as a guest speaker during the New Zealand leg of the voyage! Having last been aboard Queen Anne during her maiden voyage, I am keen to experience this new Cunarder again!
Great Australian Culinary Voyage:
The 2010-built Queen Elizabeth is completing its final Australian cruising season, before relocating to the Caribbean later this year. She will host the Great Australian Culinary Voyage to Tasmania between 6 and 11 February.
Special guests Matt Moran – a well-known Australian TV chef and restauranteur will headline a team of Aussie food personalities providing enrichment for guest aboard.
Film Festival:
Cunard’s 2004-built flagship, Queen Mary 2, will be the host ship for their 2025 Film Festival at Sea. Sailing from 8-15 March. The film festival crossing is in partnership with the BFI and will feature film screenings in Illuminations, the ship’s 3D cinema and planetarium.
Cunard 185th Anniversary:
Queen Mary 2 will also host the 185th anniversary transatlantic crossing event – another voyage I am very excited about! I will be aboard as a headline guest speaker, along with Dr. Stephen Payne – the designer of Queen Mary 2!
This voyage sails from 24 June to 1 July, so just a few days ahead of the actual 185th anniversary of Britannia’s maiden departure on 4 July 1840.
Tumblr media
However, back in May 1840, Cunard’s first ever ship – the Unicorn – sailed across the Atlantic to commence the first Cunard voyage before Britannia even entered service. Unicorn was a smaller steamer that Cunard purchased to run a ferry service in Canada, and in June 1840 she was causing quite a stir with the local press, creating great interest in the new steamship service.
Dance the Atlantic:
Dance the Atlantic will take place aboard QM2 from 8-15 August 2025 and sees Cunard partner with English National Ballet. There will be ballet classes in the Royal Court Theatre, and performances aboard the ship during the transatlantic crossing.
Symphony:
September 3-10 will see QM2 welcome Anthony Inglis and the United Kingdom’s National Symphony Orchestra aboard for a series of performances in the Royal Court Theatre.
Voyage du Vin:
In October, the Voyage du Vin will set sail aboard Queen Victoria. This cruise, from 13-24 October features talks and tastings from wine experts, and is hosted in partnership with Corney & Barrow, one of the oldest independent wine merchants in the UK.
Tumblr media
Special Crossings:
QM2 is home to the final two event voyages of 2025, with the Transatlantic fashion week crossing from 31 October to 7 November, and the Literary Festival at Sea from 8-15 December.
Both the fashion week voyage and Literary festival are eastbound crossings from New York to Southampton.

For crowding out the scammers from the askbox (I get at least 3+ a day too now!), do you have a dream vacation, or any particular bucket list places you'd like to visit?
So many! I definitely want to get to Paris and London, I want to take a Danube river cruise during the Christmas markets, I want to go back to New Zealand and see more of the Southern Alps, I'd love to get to Japan sometime, and I want to cruise the Panama Canal. And probably a lot of other things too.

finally reading khalili's sinews of war and trade and thinking abt how different air travel is than sea travel. not just on the time scale but how like non-physical air travel is, how it eliminates geography & infrastructure. if you had to go thru the suez or the panama canal as a tourist you'd be hard pressed to truly ignore the shall we say Arrangement of the World in the way that you would when you're just flying. and really based on nothing but vibes but i get the impression that cruise routes and freight seaways are usually quite divergent?

2016 VoicePlay summer fun — campers, cruises, costumes, charity, and… cops?
The excitement of the spring months rolled right into the summer. After he'd had a few weeks of concentrated new-dad time, the other guys gathered up Layne and headed to Ohio.
They first returned to Port Clinton for a show at the Lakeside Chautauqua Auditorium, and spent the night at a vintage (possibly haunted) hotel. From there, they scooted down to Dayton to be the featured artists at Camp A Cappella.
Tumblr media
.
Ahoy, mateys
A week later, while the others took care of things at home, Geoff and Earl teamed up with three of their buddies from Echo — Erik Winger, Antonio Fernandez, and Deejay Young — for a quick cruise on the Royal Caribbean Allure to the Virgin Islands. During their time at sea, they crossed paths with Us the Duo, who had just finished opening for the North American and European legs of Pentatonix's world tour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
No rest for the ambitious
They arrived home to an exciting milestone: 100K likes on Facebook! In the meantime, Eli did some session recording work, while Layne and Tony prepped for their next PattyCake video, and Layne worked on an additional side project. (Paternity leave was supposed to be less busy, dude!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Runnin', runnin'
Once the guys were all together again, they got into production on projects for both PattyCake and VoicePlay for most of August. In between location shoots for "Will.of.Oz", they reunited with Emoni Wilkins to film their video for "I Love Me".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Cruisin'
At the end of the month, the guys grabbed Winger again, and boarded the Royal Caribbean Oasis for yet another voyage. Since they set sail on Geoff's birthday, they had a toast on board.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Almost as soon as they got home, they traded one guest for another, snagging Antonio for the middle leg of an eastbound Panama Canal trip on the Disney Wonder. (Though it seems that they were possibly getting weary from so much travel.) They also seem to have run afoul of the Mexican police on their way home, but I'm pretty sure the getting arrested part was just a joke.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Hop, skip, and a jump
After a few days of rest, they embarked on a series of quick trips. First they flew up to New Hampshire for the UNH A Cappella Fest. Next came a show in Iowa, and then a charity fundraiser in Chicago.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
All about those babes
During their next stint at home, they made time for a little hanging without working. Most of the guys let someone else do the singing for once when they attended a local Meghan Trainor concert. The group included Layne, Cyndi, and their older girls; Cyndi's sister Steph and her elder daughter; Earl and Nick; and Tony.
Meanwhile, Eli spent some time with his own family to celebrate his sister's birthday, and Geoff got his domesticity on at home with Kathy.
.
Back to woOOOork
As summer wound down, VoicePlay prepared for their favorite time of year by finally filming a music video for their arrangement of "Grim Grinning Ghosts" off of their 2012 album "Once Upon an Ever After".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
All eh-board
They closed out September with a cruise on the Disney Magic from Nova Scotia to NYC and back. Since Tony and Layne were deep in production for their next PattyCake project (and Layne understandably wanted some more time at home with the baby), the rest of the guys called on both Winger and Antonio to fill in again.

The itinerary for my Christmas cruise changed. We added a stop in Mexico (that is basically Guatemala!), no more Nicaragua (damn), and no more Curaçao (port congestion). But we are now going to... Colombia!!! AHHHH, that is literally another bucket list experience for me! My BFF Veronica lives in Colombia, and my classmate was born and raised there before moving to the States.
Needless to say, December is going to be AWESOME!!! I am excited to visit so many countries I have never been to before and learn more about the culture of my friends. (Plus, the Panama Canal!)

Chapter 203 Trivia
Happy 4th of July from Dr. Xeno*!
(*Indirectly.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fluorite mines still exist in Japan, however they're far inland so the KoS can't make use of their boat routes for transport.
Fluorite is one of the first materials shown to fluoresce (=glow when light/EM radiation hits it), which is what the phenomenon was named after!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the major problems in improving telescope quality is getting rid of chromatic aberration, which can be improved by using lenses with a lower refractive index (such as those made of fluorite rather than glass). This bends the light less, leading to clearer magnification.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The rocket design is similar to cruise missiles, in that it uses a jet engine rather than a rocket engine. Cruise missiles will follow an almost direct path to their target, and have the ability to adjust direction at any point. Ballistic missiles cannot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The blocky thing shown here could be a stylized vacuum column tape drive, a device for storing data on magnetic tape (the black ribbon in cassettes) to be used in computations.
One of these devices is the IBM 7090, which was used by NASA to control space flights in the 60s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The map shows that the KoS may be aiming to land around Goa in India.
Assuming they don't stop, the journey via the Suez is >10 days, and >23 days via the Cape of Good Hope.
Tumblr media
The Banana Canal seems to be how the villagers remember the name of the Panama Canal, which is odd because bananas only grow in the very south of Japan (if at all) so they're unlikely to have been familiar with them before reaching South America.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Suez is a man-made canal that gets drained and cleared every 10 years so the boats can pass through unobstructed. The area has also been mostly desert for thousands of years. Sandstorms would soon fill it in, making it impassable.
Tumblr media
What Ryusui is worried about here is probably similar to the Ever Given back in March, when winds ran it aground, blocking the whole canal. It had to be dug out to be freed, which the KoS can't do here. Turning around or backing up is also impossible if the canal is too narrow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kohaku is the only power/fighter team member here, and she's definitely making sure to represent the hot-heads! Getting revenge on a canal, trying to destroy things…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chelsea's old banners made a comeback, which isn't surprising since fabric is tedious to make. Reuse is the basis of Senku's science after all!
But more importantly, how the H-E-L-L did it survive those 7 years when everyone was petrified?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The dam shown looks more like a beaver dam or a deliberate structure than something that naturally got packed like that. The way it follows onto the land is a little odd to me as well… Something could be hiding underneath?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Senku always makes sure to number his rockets.
(I spent too long wondering if this was a pun, but the i-shi/stone pun is for 1-4, and "Dr. One" doesn't quite fit how "Dr. Stone" is pronounced…)
Tumblr media
The rocket has two sets of controllers, one used by Senku on the ship and the other by Ryusui about half way to the dam. It's unlikely that this choice is due to range issues, as the cell phones worked 80 km apart and this is only 20 km.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's probably so that Ryusui can pinpoint the landing while Senku takes care of the launch.
The coordination between them is impressive!
Tumblr media
India has likely been chosen as Math City because of its long history of mathematics dating back over 3000 years, before Europe had made similar advances. They invented many important concepts, such as negative numbers, the idea of zero, and decimal points.
The other option for India being Math City is that it has many natural resources useful for making computers and other electronics, however I think we'll have to wait until future chapters to see why they chose it!

Sydney, Circular Quay c1974. This postcard can be dated to just one day; as the French cruise liner S.S. France made only one visit to Sydney, on February 16, 1974. In this lovely scene, SS France can be seen in company with some of Sydney's ferry and bus fleets including 'Kanangra' in the foreground, 'South Steyne' at extreme left and 'Baragoola' in Sydney Cove, and is that 'Proclaim' behind the 'Kanangra'? The buses at East Circular Quay include a green & cream 'underfloor' from the mid-1950s and two second series Leyland Leopards in the PTC blue and ivory livery.
SS France was launched on May 11, 1960. She became the longest Trans-Atlantic liner at 1,035 ft and after being fitted out, departed on on her first voyage in January, 1962; a cruise from Le Havre to the Canary Islands. On February 3, 1962 she departed on her maiden Trans-Atlantic crossing from Le Havre to New York, although by this time jet aircraft were regularly flying between Europe and New York, making the sea voyage virtually obselete. French pride and government subsidies kept her going throughout the 1960's and into the early 1970's.
On January 9, 1974, SS France departed New York on a world voyage. Because she was too long for the Panama Canal locks, she sailed south via Cape Horn then visited Papeete (Tahiti), Auckland, and Wellington before making her way to Australian waters. The cruise was to have called at Hobart, but this was cancelled at the last minute due to her length and she arrived in Sydney with great fanfare on February 16. She returned to New York via South Africa.
Following the Australian visit, SS France resumed trans-Atlantic sailings, but it wasn't to last. Subsidies from the French Government were withdrawn in mid-1974 and the vessels final Atlantic crossing was in September 1974.
