I seen you like Tam Lin too! Do you have a favorite version of it?
For one that understands the pro-choice part of the narrative – Tam Lin by Pamela Dean
For ones that understand the vibes and having an angry/feral girl – The Darkest Part of the Forest and Tithe by Holly Black
For one that understands a major point of Tam Lin is to hold on tight and never let go – Echo North* by Joanna Ruth Meyer
And let me not forget the third book in the October Daye series, An Artificial Night
For one where the Janet figure falls in love with the evil queen – The Dark Tide by Alicia Jasinska
Fire and Hemlock...it's hard to recommend because of how weird it is. DWJ’s prose slaps and the stuff about memory is fascinating, but the age gap is.............uh...........yikes...
*Yes, yes. It's an East of the Sun retelling, but the second part is heavily inspired by Tam Lin

Yenndouma, 1969. Photo by Pamela Johnson Meyer. "Propped by rubble, logs, and faith, a family compound at Venndouma clings to a rock face of the Bandiagara escarpment. Smooth mud walls with rounded corners mark the living quarters, upper center. Straw-hatted granaries perch haphazardly. In some, the head of the family stores his reserves of millet, sorghum, rice, and beans, others hold a day-to-day supply for the household, given out by the wife. A hogon, or village priest, may own larger granaries, communal sources of food in lean times." The Dogon took up their way of life centuries ago, driven by the Fulani and other warrior tribes to these inhospitable but defensible heights that had earlier sheltered a little-known people called the Tellem. Here, secluded from the outside world, the Dogon nurtured their complex social order, based in almost every detail on elaborate religious precepts and beliefs They also developed the arts of sculpture and dance, permeated with symbolism that still intrigues anthropologists." From "Foxes foretell the future in Mali's Dogon country". https://www.instagram.com/p/CmPf2koNExd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

✨️ Mid Year Reading Wrap-Up ✨️
I cannot believe it, I'm a reader 🤩 this year I truly discovered (maybe for the first time) how much I enjoy reading. The past several years I was so engrossed in nonfiction, psychology, parenting books, children's lit, academic reading, and classics that I ignored all other genres. However, finally, I started enjoying good, old fashioned stories again. Much to my surprise, I've been loving the fantasy genre! (Rom-com makes me cringe but it's easy/entertaining to read too!)
Here's the books I've read this year so far (that i can remember) 📚
Sacred Earth, Sacred Soul: a Celtic Guide to Listening to Our Souls & Saving the World by John Phillip Newell 🌿
The Witch's Feast: a Kitchen Grimoire by Melissa Madara 🔮
The Thorns Remain by JJA Hardwood 🧚‍♀️
Cackle by Rachel Harrison 🔮
Bringing up Bébé: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting by Pamela Druckerman 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 🇫🇷
The Entire Twilight Saga (again) by Stephanie Meyer 😔💀🌧
Plant Parenting: Easy Ways to Make More Houseplants, Vegetables, and Flowers by Leslie F. Halleck 🪴
From Bad to Cursed by Lana Harper 🔮
The Bone Orchard by Sara A. Mueller 🦴🧠👻
Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman 🔮
The Power of Bad: How the Negativity Effect Rules Us & How We Can Rule It by John F Tierney and Roy F. Baumeister 📖🎓
Small Town, Big Magic by Hazel Beck 🔮
Beach Read by Emily Henry 📚⛱️
The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondō 🧹
Messy Minimalism : Realistic Strategies for the Rest of Us by Rachelle Crawford 🧹
Scottish Witchcraft : A Complete Guide to Authentic Folklore, Spells, and Magickal Tools by Barbara Meiklejohn-Free 🔮
📚📚📚📚📚📚
I think The Bone Orchard, Cackle, The Thorns Remain, & Beach Read take the cake on my favorite reads of the year so far. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I forgot I even read at ALL until making this list and opening a Goodreads account. I even had to check my list of library rentals to remember it all! Quick note: I'm obsessed with the Army library on base as well as the one by our house & the state digital library I access with the Libby app.
📚 Currently, I'm reading another parenting book, another fantasy, and my FIRST Silvia Moreno-Garcia!
🎃 I swear one day I'll make a list of all my fav Children's and storybooks we have in our house, especially the creepy Halloween/spooky ones!

It’s been a little over a year since Scream 6 came out and I’m surprised that nobody ever brings up a little detail about this movie so I figured I’d talk about it. I’m pretty sure Scream 6 takes heavy inspiration from the Friday the 13th series in the same way the original Scream took inspiration from Halloween. Some of the connections I’ve noticed are (major spoilers for some details)
The location shift from Woodsboro to NYC is also reminiscent of Jason takes Manhattan (luckily this movie doesn’t waste time on a boat)
Jason takes Manhattan playing on Jason’s tv in the beginning is similar to Casey watching Halloween in the first Scream
Jason finding Greg’s body stuffed in the fridge is similar to Alice finding Pamela Voorhees’ head in her fridge in part 2
The killer in the beginning being named Jason
Ghostface’s being more brutal than normal similar to Jason Voorhees being more brutal than Michael Meyers (I’ll admit this one is a bit of a stretch)
Bailey’s motivation for killing is to get revenge for the death of his son, making him similar to Pamela Voorhees (this could also be to make him similar to Mrs Loomis in Scream 2 but she’s also meant to be similar to Pamela Voorhees)
Finally, this movie brings the total amount of ghostfaces to 13 (9 from the previous movies plus the 4 from this movie)
I’ll admit that I don’t know for certain this is what Radio Silence intended and these connections could all either coincidental or even not as major as I thought, but I feel like it’s still worth pointing out on the off chance it was intentional.

Scarecrows, 2017 (Dir. Stuart Stone)
For any cinematic group of teenage slasher victims to serve as protagonists and windows into the world of their characters, there must of necessity be a cinematic slasher villain to give them victim status. Ultimately, the question of the film's quality is decided by the relationship between victim and villain and the triggering Event that causes the slasher to snap into action against that particular group of victims. This transgression against transgressors makes horror movies tantalizing.
This relational Event can involve a historical connection between the two terms, like the Meyers house in Halloween which ties together Laurie Strode, Michael Meyers, and his other victims in the first Halloween film. It can be a heavily telegraphed psychological motivation, like Pamela or Jason Voorhees dishing out misguided retribution to anyone who resembles a libidinous camp counselor in Friday the 13th.
Or it can just be a farmer who turns trespassers into scarecrows, and he can just find a new group of people to turn into scarecrows. What did they do? Nothing special. A little bit of sex and trespassing. None of them are interesting characters. The hillbilly who kills them doesn't even seem that into it.
Scarecrows is simultaneously mean-spirited and disinterested in its own status as a slasher movie. I feel like it's important to tell audiences that none of the protagonists make it out alive at the end. It's more like Terrifier than anything, in that it seems to resent its protagonists for being protagonists. Also like Terrifier, the villain sucks and ends up winning just to spite the audience's expectations of closure. It's not an interesting choice or a twist or even a statement about fate in this case. It really seems like a movie that someone made because they wanted to go out in a cornfield with a couple of young women and get them to take their clothes off.
