Today's random hyperfixation of the day is determining locations and mathing out how long Maeve and Caleb realistically would've had to drive to get to the senator's estate and back to Los Angeles in season 4 episode 2 - Well Enough Alone. They take off during what appears to be the middle of the night, probably around 10 or 11pm, but it could literally have been anytime from that to roughly 4am honestly.
I'm pretty sure all of the real locations used to film these particular scenes are based in Southern California, but I'm headcanoning that in-universe the Senator's home is located in Northern California, a lot closer to the state capitol in Sacramento.
If Maeve were to drive mainly I-5 Northbound from Los Angeles to Sacramento, they would get there in about 6 to 7 hours, pending traffic and weather conditions and excluding any rest stops or detours used.
I don't think they would've made any rest stops. They were on a tight schedule to try and get to the Senator before William could, and Maeve doesn't really *need* sleep as a host in that it doesn't provide any of the restorative functions it does for the human body. She does choose to sleep sometimes, but I would sincerely hope not while driving a car. Caleb on the other hand appears to be just waking up from a car nap right here, but I don't think he would've been asleep for the entire journey. It reads more like he's trying to continue an earlier, unseen conversation with Maeve that probably could've gone something like Caleb asking 'where have you been all this time?' and Maeve giving a vague-ish answer like 'oh in a quiet little cabin in the woods somewhere cold'.
I couldn't find any info about where these two particular locations are based but I am still generally assuming "somewhere in SoCal" and once again, setting it in NorCal in-universe anyway. These make up the exterior of the estate owned by Senator Ken Whitney and his wife Anastasia Whitney. Another interior/exterior location features the barn at Will Rogers Historic State Park in Pacific Palisades and serves as the stable where the real Anastasia is being held under Hale's mind control.
They head back to Los Angeles to attend the opera opening at Angeles Arts Pavilion (which is actually the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts located at CSU Northridge). That's another 6-7 hour drive back and this time they would've stopped at a tailor to obtain Caleb's tux and Maeve's gala dress.
So collectively, Maeve and Caleb would've spent somewhere between 12-14 hours on the road driving to the Senator's estate and back. Almost immediately after they get back TO Los Angeles they then get shuffled away again by a secret train headed off to Nevada for the unveiling of the Golden Age park.
#big data compiles information on everybody — meta.#sorta??#mostly just an excuse for me to point out that the duo spent 14 hours in a car together#and muse about all the possible bestie talks they had

Auerbach Construction, Inc. (Photo taken by me, I think, on April 2, 2023 - I don't know whose hands that is.)
Auerbach Construction, Inc. was founded by Ernest Auerbach, who was born in 1916 in Brooklyn, NY and died on February 1, 2010 (this was actually quite difficult for me to be sure about but I now am). He is buried at Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City, CA (findagrave.com). The below photo was added to Find a Grave by Romper90069.
In the Great Depression, "he grew and sold produce, and later became a producer broker." In World War II, he was in the Horse Cavalry of the U.S. Army. Moving to California after the war, he founded the Ernest Auerbach Company in Santa Monica, CA in 1946 for real estate construction, management, and financing.
According to the 1965 Westside City Directory, Auerbach at that point was still operating as Ernest Auerbach Co and was located at 11965 Montana Av, apartment 2 (City Directories Inc., accessed via the Los Angeles Public Library).
Apparently he was also a racehorse breeder, who started a thoroughbred breeding farm in San Diego County, CA in 1977 ("Ernest Auerbach, Santa Monica real estate developer, dies at 93," Jewish Journal, February 17, 2010).
He was the chairman of the board of the Auerbach Construction company and had "built 'something' on almost every street of [Santa Monica], from small residences to apartment houses" (LA Times). Same for much of Brentwood and Pacific Palisades. By 1987, he had "built more than 10 million square feet of commercial, retail and residential properties valued at more than $500 million." And at that time, they focused mostly on "industrial high-tech and commercial properties" through LA, Orange, and San Diego counties. Their headquarters since 1982 was Auerbach Plaza at 2001 Wilshire Blvd.
In 2001, he founded a bank that became the First Business Bank in San Diego, CA (Jewish Journal).
According to the Los Angeles Times, Auerbach was a "mild-mannered man with an uncanny eye for the right opportunity" ("By Veteran Developer: An Instant Replay of Santa Monica Values," Evelyn De Wolfe, The Los Angeles Times, April 5, 1987).
Rodney Freeman, who is Managing Partner of Metro Properties, includes his 18 years at Auerbach Construction, Inc. in his bio on Metro Properties's website. According to the aforementioned LA Times article, Freeman led Auerbach Construction Co. from at least 1987.
Simon Schreier, now of S. Schreier & Associates, Inc., was Senior Project Manager for Auerbach Construction from 1994 to 1997 (rocketreach.co).

The Transportation System in Los Angeles, California
Los Angeles, California, navigates a sprawling urban landscape through an extensive and evolving transportation system. The city has a car-centric culture and is dominated by a network of highways and freeways, including the iconic Interstate 405. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) provides bus and rail services connecting various neighborhoods, including the Metro Rail and Metro Bus lines. The Metro Rail comprises multiple lines, such as the Red and Purple Lines, offering an alternative to the notorious traffic. Rideshare services and a growing network of bike lanes contribute to mobility options. While the city continues investing in public transit expansion, challenges persist due to the vast geographic expanse and the reliance on automobiles in Los Angeles.
Santa Monica Pier
The Santa Monica Pier, an iconic symbol of Southern California, beckons visitors with a vibrant mix of seaside amusements and stunning coastal views. Stretching into the Pacific Ocean, the pier boasts a classic amusement park featuring a solar-powered Ferris wheel, a historic carousel, and various family-friendly rides. Beyond the thrill of the attractions, the pier offers picturesque views of the coastline and serves as a lively gathering spot for locals and tourists alike. The bustling boardwalk hosts street performers, eateries, and shops, creating a lively atmosphere. Whether enjoying a ride on the Ferris wheel or simply relishing the sea breeze, the Santa Monica Pier is a timeless destination blending entertainment, relaxation, and scenic beauty.
Learning Cursive in School, Long Scorned as Obsolete, is Now the Law in California
Learning cursive writing holds importance beyond its aesthetic value, fostering cognitive and developmental benefits. Cursive mastery enhances fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and dexterity, which are crucial for overall cognitive development, especially in younger learners. It engages different brain regions than print writing, promoting neurological connections. Cursive proficiency can improve reading skills as individuals often find it easier to transition between print and cursive texts. Moreover, historical documents and personal notes may be written in cursive, making it a valuable skill for comprehending and preserving cultural heritage. While digital communication dominates, cursive remains relevant, ensuring individuals can read and produce handwritten materials, maintaining a connection to tradition, and enhancing communication skills.

Across the U.S., Pride symbols are being attacked in outbreak of vandalism
On Tuesday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta (D) released a new report that reveals hate crimes based on sexual orientation in the state rose nearly 30% in 2022. In March, the FBI published statistics that showed a 70% increase in reported hate crimes involving a sexual orientation bias in the previous year. --- Related Stories Support for gay relationships dropped drastically among Republicans A majority of Republicans now don’t believe that same-sex relationships are morally acceptable. --- Those numbers are born out in 2023 by a rash of vandalism directed at Pride displays across the country in June, amid an onslaught of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in red states and coordinated attacks on the community by far-right organizations. Get the Daily Brief The news you care about, reported on by the people who care about you. From New York to California, symbols representing LGBTQ+ identity are being defaced and destroyed. In Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles over the weekend, two lifeguard towers at Ginger Rogers Beach painted in Progress flag colors were defaced just 48 hours after they were unveiled by Los Angeles County officials and East Hollywood artist Katherine Bingley, who was out Monday morning repairing the damage. Vandals broke windows and attempted to scratch a swastika on one structure. “It’s sad and disappointing.” Los Angeles area rainbow Pride-themed lifeguard towers vandalized 48 hours after they were unveiled. (Video: ABC 7 Los Angeles) pic.twitter.com/NeNRSFKc2D— Mike Sington (@MikeSington) June 26, 2023 In New Jersey, vandals ripped the word “Pride” out of four rainbow banners in Harrison Township in the southern part of the state last weekend. The town’s mayor said he received calls from outraged residents and condemned the act. He was joined by the county prosecutor’s office asking for the public’s help identifying the perpetrators, while the town’s police chief filed a hate crime report. Following the Baltimore Pride parade on Saturday, vandals defaced a sign marking the entrance to the city’s Homeland neighborhood by painting over the “e” to read “Homoland.” Homeowner association member Michael Burns called the vandalism hateful. “I suspect the vandal was reacting to our flags,” Burns told the Baltimore Banner, referring to Pride flags displayed on his house and around the gay-friendly neighborhood. “He or she will be disappointed to see them again next year.” In Santa Fe last weekend, a rainbow flag hung on the city’s Plaza gazebo was found defaced with a chalk drawing of a cross and the phrase “Jesus saves,” following the city’s Pride parade and festival. Calling it a “slap in the face,” Mayor Alan Webber (D) condemned the graffiti. “Pride was a joyful celebration of community and justice for all, and it was a celebration that showed Santa Fe at our best,” Webber said in a statement. “In contrast, this is a cowardly act of bias and bigotry that all of us should condemn.” In New York, the Stonewall National Monument has been vandalized at least four times this month, park volunteers report. Pride flags displayed in Christopher Park across the street from the Stonewall Inn were ripped down and defaced in four separate incidents on June 6, 9, 16, and 18. Police arrived to find 33 Pride flags torn down in the latest incident a week ago Sunday. “We have so much hatred and anger in the air right now,” one volunteer told Fox 5 New York. “We need to reverse that and replace it with love, compassion, and acceptance.” http://dlvr.it/SrNMMY

K. S. Littlejohn Co Contractors 1926 (Photo taken by Scott Fajack on December 23, 2022 on Ocampo Dr at W Pampas Ricas Blvd. in the Rustic Canyon neighborhood near/ in the Pacific Palisades, CA).
I believe this Littlejohn is Captain Kenneth Stuart Littlejohn, who was born February 6, 1876 or 1877 in Montclair, New Jersey and died September 18, 1952 in Mexico. His father was Frank Bennoch Littlejohn and his mother was Elise (maybe Elsie) Thomson Stuart. He married Josephine Keizer (1887-1963), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dell Keizer, of Kansas City, Missouri. Their engagement was announced on page 34 of April 2, 1911 issue of The Kansas City Star (findagrave.com) and they were married May 18, 1912 in California (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Littlejohn-725#_note-0). He had a son Kenneth Keizer (1926-1950), who was born in Los Angeles, and three daughters - Virginia (1914-2000), Eleanor Stuart (1915-1977), and Lorna Jean (1916-1989). You can see them listed in the Fifteenth Census of the United States: 1930 Population Schedule seen here for the “Beverly Hills Township.”
In WWI, he was in the Sixth U. S. Engineers and “was recognized for bravery at the battle of Claire Chenes Woods, France” (History of the Sixth Engineers, Knickerbocker Press, 1920. Entry for Captain Kenneth S. Littlejohn, page 274).
Littlejohn was given the contract for the canal digging by dragline excavator of Canal Rosales in Sinaloa, Mexico. “The work is somewhat out of the ordinary, as it is not a common thing for dragline excavators to be used for this purpose in Mexico, as native labor and mules are so plentiful and so cheap that they can almost compete even on big work with machine excavation.” (Not sure how much the laborers were making a fair living or not in that scenario!) At the time of this contract, the company was based in Tucson, Arizona. The foreman in charge of this project was Otto G. Fladung of Tucson. (”Canal Digging with Dragline Excavator in Old Mexico,” Excavating Contractor, Volumes 15-16, A.B. Morse Company, 1921). Fladung was born April 4, 1892 in Ohio and died February 10, 1923 in Tucson. He’s buried in the Saint Louis Cemetery in Louisville, Ohio.
They lost a bid for work in Phoenix, AZ in 1922 (Southwest Builder and Contractor, Volume 60, F. W. Dodge Company, 1922), but they were awarded the contract for street work for Florence ave. between Van Ness Ave. and West Blvd. by the Los Angeles Building and Public Works department (Building and Engineering News, Volume 26, Issue 2, 1926).
At the time of Kenneth Keizer’s birth, they lived at 2289 W 24th Street, in the Jefferson Park neighborhood of Los Angeles just south of the current 10 freeway. The house is still there - Zillow says the current house there was built in 1905. Kenneth Kaiser’s birth certificate gives me more confidence that Kenneth Stuart is the correct K.S. Littlejohn, as it lists his occupation as “Consulting Engineer” and his employer as “Self.”
K. S. Littlejohn Co. Engineers and Contractors are listed with K.S. Littlejohn and R.K. Walker in the Charter of the City of Los Angeles in Effect July 1, 1925 (Los Angeles Daily Journal, 1925). They can also be found in the Los Angeles County Incorporation Records (Second Series) 1903-1939 at the Seaver Center for Western History Research, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. In the Los Angeles City Directory 1925, the company’s principals are listed as K S Littlejohn and E T Brown, with their office at 626 S Spring Street, room 609 (Los Angeles Directory Company, Los Angeles, CA, 1925, accessed via the Los Angeles Public Library). Today that address has some bars and studio loft apartments, not 100% sure it’s still the same building but probably.
Littlejohn was one of the contractors in Fillmore, CA involved in the repair work after the St. Francis Dam Disaster, under the supervision of general director C. E. Bressler (Hundley, Norris and Jackson, Donald C. Heavy Ground: William Mulholland and the St. Francis Dam Disaster, University of Nevada Press, 2020).
