The day before yesterday, I drove to SE Idaho to go to some fossil beds and to see displays of fossils from the area (as well as some from nearby states because this was all one large wetlands region before concepts like states existed). I will post more about this stuff later.
The other part of this trip was to test out camping in my car to see if traveling around by myself and sleeping in relative comfort was possible for me.
Tumblr media
Here is my bed setup! In the front passenger's seat is all of my food storage, including an electric cooler that is acting as my refrigerator. The floor behind the driver's seat is my "closet" (where I am storing my towel, toiletries, and duffel bag lol) and is accessible from inside the car in bed mode. Everything stashes away nicely. I even have solar panels and my Bluetti battery in there, three gallons of water (plus my 2L hydration bottle and 32oz hydroflask). A 1.5" memory foam pad serves as the matress, and there are blackout shades that fit perfectly into the windows for privacy, though I hadn't put them up for this photograph. It has turned out to be rather cozy.
Since childhood, I've really loved making small, enclosed spaces that I could crawl into and feel cocooned. My car feels like I made the best little blanket fort, which is kind of wild to me. I could probably enjoy staying like this—as long as I had access to a bathroom and shower—for quite a while!
Prioritizing lots of pillows (including an armchair pillow thing) was the way to go. I have reclined in my pod and read, edited, and watched movies before sleeping each night. It feels like being a little rolly poly, and the car is my exoskeleton. Or I am a turtle, and the inside of my shell is AWEOME. A cave bear with a SICK den. Even when I go back home, I might set it up sometimes just to have a fort.

Greetings, fellow travelers! 🌎
On this blog you will find wild stories, stunning photos, quotes, random gossip, whimsy & snark, from staff and visitors to:
Museums 🏛️
Science centers 🔭
Zoos 🐼
Aquariums 🦈
Botanical gardens 🌿
& related institutions.
I have some stories of my own to tell, and I want to hear about your experiences in these places, too!
About me: I just took early retirement after working for more than 25 years as the web designer, editor, and photographer for a natural history museum. I have a BA in anthropology and a master's in museum studies. I had graduate assistantships in the exhibits, entomology, and geology/paleontology departments of the university museum where I was working towards my degree. Before that, I worked as a sort of general assistant in a small science museum. Earlier still, I volunteered with the exhibits team at a science & nature center that also had a small zoo.
My parents were both scientists - mom was a high school biology teacher (and a botanist by training) and dad was a physicist. They both loved to travel, and we did a lot of that when I was a kid. We took a few cross-country road trips, and also took trips to Canada, France, the UK and Switzerland. I've done limited travel on my own to Germany and Denmark. I've been to museums and similar places on most of these trips. I plan to share my thoughts on those experiences here.
Please join me in exploring the world of museums!

you are going on an 8 hour road trip. you must choose one of these people as your companion. you are not allowed to kill them or yourself.
information about your companions:
-they are both white christian women, married in their late 20s. they are not bringing their kids or husbands on this trip. neither of them will act prejudiced towards you in any way. neither of them will bring up politics with you. both of them will happily accommodate any disabilities you have.
-the herbalist wholeheartedly believes in theistic evolution, as her extensive knowledge of plants simply doesn’t make sense without it.
-the herbalist will try to sell you essential oils. she is in a pyramid scheme. she will provide you recipes that will kill you.
-the YEC wholeheartedly believes in the power of modern medicine. she considers doctors to be people carrying out god’s work. she carries a mask & hand sanitizer in her purse in case she needs it. her children are all vaccinated.
-the YEC is absolutely obsessed with dinosaurs. she will insist you stop at any dinosaur-related roadside attraction. if there happens to be any actual paleontological science at that location, she will attempt to convince you that it’s all fake and part of a cover-up.

Domestic December Day 9 - Staycation
The ghouls get a break during touring to relax before the next leg begins.
Prompt list by comp-lady. See prompt list here
Silly ghoul headcanons below the cut or on AO3
After a whirlwind first leg of tour, the ghouls are getting a much deserved break. There’s only two weeks before they need to fly out to the States and start the next part of the tour, so there’s not much sense in settling back at the ministry just to have to leave almost immediately. Instead, the clergy put up the ghouls, Papa, and the tour crew alike in a posh hotel and give them mostly free reign on how they’d like to spend their time. With Copia’s warnings to behave themselves still ringing in their ears, the ghouls are set loose to enjoy their break.
The ghouls end up with two large connecting suites with four king sized beds between them perfect to be pushed together to form comfortable nests. Once they all get settled in the hotel, Phantom and Aurora immediately conk out. Both ghouls, still new to touring, are exhausted. They both happily crash together in the plush mattress of one of the beds, a wonderful change from the cramped tour bus bunks. The rest of the ghouls aren’t far behind, Cirrus and Cumulus joining Aurora and Phantom, and Swiss, Mountain, Dew, and Rain taking the other nest.
Once everyone is well rested, they all find their own ways of relaxing. Dew and Rain wander the city trying out a new coffee shop each morning. Mountain spends a lot of time at a local park, people watching and feeding the ducks. Aurora and Rain practically live in the hotel’s pool, regularly having to be kicked out by hotel staff when it’s time for cleaning or closure of the night.
Cirrus, Cumulus lead regular sightseeing expeditions going to museums or interesting places and events. Phantom often joins along, and his favorite day trip was the natural history museum; he spent two hours in the paleontology exhibit alone. Swiss and Aurora become quite infamous at the local bars, Swiss for winning drinking game after drinking game (it takes a lot to get a ghoul drunk) and Aurora for becoming quite skilled and lucky at poker. They earn an insane amount of money in winnings between them. Most nights find everyone curling into one or the other nest to watch movies or video call with Aether and Sunshine.
All too soon, it’s time to get back on the road. The break was nice but they’re all itching to get back to performing. Bidding their lodging farewell they jump back into the whirlwind of touring once again.

@somniaxperdita from here
He grins when he hears the door open, happy to hear his girlfriend's voice after spending the last few days cooped up in his new home office working on grant proposals.
"I took the afternoon off. I've been doing office work for the last week or so anyhow, the guys down at the dig won't even notice."
Bobby had been working on the Jurassic Preservation Dig in Gravity Falls since the summer, when he'd made the permanent move to the sweet little town he was now so happy to call home. The move had virtually no downsides. Living under his ma's roof, being able to be with his daughter every day, having the most spectacular girlfriend living nearby so late night facetime calls were now a thing of the past... All of of that, plus spearheading paleontological research that would certainly change the field for years to come? He's honestly living the best life possible at that moment.
He holds out the still warm bundle to her, primarily to hand it off but also so he could get an idea where the rest of her was so he could grab her for a kiss.
"She's actually with Stan today." He explains, "They took a little road trip a few towns over to go to one of those Halloween shops that appear in old abandoned buildings. I dunno what they're up to but I'm pretty sure the Mystery Shack's going to be the premier stop for any trick or treater in town." He laughs. He'd been warming up to the old guy more and more the longer he'd been in town and he fully was able to grasp just how much his mom an daughter liked the guy and was able to understand that the old shyster was actually pretty good to them in turn. "So Ma's got the place to herself which is usually when she goes the most wild with the baking. I figured I'd get out of her way annnnnd come spend some time with my lady." He says slyly.

If I had a time machine I doubt id even use it. I'd probably go up to people in the fields of anthropology/archaeology/paleontology and ask if they have a time period they'd want to visit and then take them there. Every now and then I'll watch a video or read a book made by a someone who's spent 40 years studying a specific instance in history and imagine what it'd be like if I could take them on a road trip to that time period. I'd give them 24 hours to get a first person perspective of a world they've only seen in their mind's eye and then I would whisk them back to their own time period where they might kill themselves because they'll never be able to go back. It would be really boring if they used it to like see their now-dead parents or grandparents one last time though.

Watching Prehistoric Road Trip
I know that I talk about documentaries many times in this blog but I couldn’t stop myself to talk again about natural documentaries after watching this one with Emily Graisley, the host of the Youtube Channel TheBrainScoop. I also thought that maybe we could talk and give me my top 10 recommendations for them.
As, I have said I studied geology and cartography at university, for many but watching documentaries is an inspiration to me. I watched my first of David Attenborough’s when I was young. But I have many others so I thought I would do another recommendation post with some Attenborough and with others that I love. One of the reasons is that I like that this particular documentary has made me think some things about myself and the reason I love nature so much. I love paleontology because I feel like traveling on the Earth of the Dinosaurs and the volcanoes, more so to the Earth of the stromatolites that because of them we breathe oxygen today. That is something that Prehistoric Road Trip is about and many more as it talks about national American lands that hadn’t had the right to study in a right way, so it presents the social issues in a scientific made by another era and how to make something different today. So, let’s get started:
1.      Prehistoric Road Trip (Emily Graisley, 2020)
2.      The Rise of Continents (Ian Stewart, 2013)
3.      Maps: Power, Plunder, Possession (2010)
4.      How the Earth was made (2009- 2010)
5.      The Beauty of Maps (2010)
6.      Europe from Above (2019-)
7.      Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life (Attenborough, 2009)
8.      Prehistoric Planet (Attenborough, 2022- 2023)
9.      Our Planet (Attenborough, 2019- 2023)
10.   David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet (Attenborough, 2020)

off the top of my head
woman in line in front of my family at an amusement park who shit talked me to her husband at the tender age of 16 bc i was wearing a siouxsie and the banshees shirt and she was like “she probably doesn’t even know who they are” and then she turned around and asked me if i even listened to them and i was like yeah and then she said “oh really what’s your favorite album of theirs” and i explained it was hyaena but tinderbox as a close second and also went into a little bit of the history behind the recording of hyaena. and she apologized and turned back around.
at a paleontology booth at the utah arts festival when i was like 19 i was wearing a joy division unknown pleasures shirt but it didn’t say joy division unknown pleasures it was just the album art and one of the guys running the booth who was like idk late 20s was like “i love your arctic monkeys t shirt” and i was less mad at him than i would be at like anyone else bc being a paleontologist esp one that young is obviously incredibly based.
posted about this one recently but a cashier at whole foods with like stoner himbo intersection energy saw my joy division shirt was like oh what band is that (this one said joy division on it though in big letters) and i was like it’s joy division and he was like oh i saw those guys live a couple years ago and i was like i’m afraid not they haven’t been a band since 1980 and he was like oh. well it was a really cool festival i road tripped there with my roommate. and then just kept talking about it and i gathered that it was actually more like a pop punk type of event but he didn’t seem like he knew like anything about music at all
at least two men who have seen my julien baker sweatshirt and been like “is that a music artist? i haven’t heard of julien baker, i’ll have to listen to him” and i didn’t really feel like explaining that julien baker is a woman.
wore a kate bush shirt to work and my coworker who was like idk late 50s/60s ish was like i have to ask did you listen to kate bush before she got big on stranger things and i was like. yesss i have been a fan for almost 5 yrs what a rude accusation 😭
before i dropped out of four year college i wore a cure shirt and walked past a guy in the halls wearing a bauhaus shirt and we gave each other the Bro Nod in solidarity.
wearing band tshirts in public is a surprisingly effective way to get some interesting/weird comments from strangers in my experience

At the end of the month, I am driving down to SE Idaho to see the Hagerman horse fossil, the Hagerman fossil beds, mammoth and sabertooth cat specimens, as well as many other plant and animal fossils. I have been collecting items so that I can convert the back of my SUV into a bed so I can camp inside my car, so I will be testing that out during this trip as well. Fortunately, I have a friend down there, so I can do so in a safe place on her property.
The whole point of doing a car camper situation is so that I can eventually go on a big trip and hit all of the major fossil sites and exhibits for this whole region, beginning in Alberta and continuing down through Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and California. During my travels, I can stay in campsites and do some stealth camping/boondocking in my car (theoretically). The idea of doing this is honestly very scary to me. Incredibly out of my comfort zone. Thus my mini forays into areas of my home state where I am more familiar with each area and frequently know people that would be happy to let me park at their place. Baby steps.
My partner would also not be willing to do anything like this with me—they don't share my interest and they hate camping, so it would just be a downer for me to drag them along. It makes me nervous to travel alone in this way, not because I am worried that someone will try to harm me, but mostly because uncertainty is difficult for me and finding places to camp and sleep poses a TON of uncertainty along the way. As a person who likes to, as an example, know what restaurant I am going to days in advance and who also reads the menu in its entirety before leaving the house, not knowing for certain where I will be sleeping from night to night is A LOT. Still, it seems like a good exercise in building resilience and confidence in myself.
Also. if I can take a bunch of photographs, I can work on describing the fossils for fun as I go. I am already planning out a whole Obsidian vault for this trip so that everything can be cross-referenced, and I am honestly so excited.
Another nice benefit is that this will also be a bit of inner child healing work for me. My interest in dinosaurs was always dismissed because I was raised as a girl in an environment that was extremely gender restrictive. When my family traveled to Washington DC for the standard All Hail Nationalism tour, the fact that I wanted to see the dinosaurs and entomology exhibits in the Smithsonian Natural History Museum was completely ignored in favor of speeding through "more important" exhibits so that we could get to the Air and Space Museum (where my dad wanted to be). I am still obviously very bitter about this, lol. It has been 20 years and I WILL NEVER FORGET. 😆
I have never seen any major dinosaur fossils in person. I have never seen my state's official state fossil, the Hagerman horse, or the complete wooly mammoth on display. I have never seen Sue or any of the other fossils and replicas that we have in our museums in the United States. And you know...I think that sucks! I am a grown ass adult, and I can give that to myself now, so it is about time that I did it.

Alcoota Scientific Reserve
Red Center
Northern Territory, Australia
14th July to the 20th of July 2022
The Basin between an un-named range and the Harts Range, a possible paleo-river channel with an extensive megafauna fossil site from 8 million years ago.
Temperatures dropped to 0 overnight, felt like -5 some mornings, by mid afternoon temperatures had reached around 28 Celsius.
We always had the fires going in the mornings and afternoons for tea and to cook over each night.
We went up “Cow Pat Hill” on multiple occasions to view the sunset and sunrise, brought our drinks up there as well one night.
Spent a lot of nights star gazing as there was virtually no light pollution this far out in the Northern Territory, I had never seen the Milky Way that bright before even in the Flinders Ranges but that was mainly due to the moon.
Days stayed clear of cloud cover and we were working in the pits from 8 to 5 roughly most days, I ended up getting a lot of amazing fossils out from this site. Everything collected here has gone with the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory for research.

Dino hunters is a disgrace and the fact that there isn't more articles out there about how awful it is that a big tv channel would make a series glorifying fucking fossil poaching is honestly terrifying.
It's like that goddamn tiger king show, how are these even a thing ???
Dino hunters is a testament to how bad we've let the image of paleontology become.
People have been shown so much indiana jones cowboys digging up cool dinosaurs and nothing else that now we're getting shows about fucking fossil poachers that talk about important scientific material like it's a dirty business and glorifies it, just because it's ""cooler"" than the honest scientific work i guess ???
We have come to the point as a society where tv outlets will straight up make shows about putting illegal and unethical practices on a goddamn pedestal and often even trash on the honest work that these harm.
We live in a world where "oh because this is cool it's ok to do/like" about real life issues that physically harm scientific research, animals, and even people.
All that because people think it's entertaining to see fossil thieves acting like they're capitalistic indiana jones, or because "big cat as pet cool", or because "oh look at these foreign cultures and queer people and disabled people being treated like freaks of nature".
Anyway go watch Prehistoric Road Trip instead if you want a show about REAL fossil discovery.

The other night, I closed my eyes and woke up as another version of myself. I had this weird moment of thinking, "Where did I wander off to?". I thought nothing of it and got out of bed, and saw on my phone I was due to visit my grandma. I went through my usual routines, took my car, and split. When I reached her house I noticed there were some differences but I recalled I hadn't seen her in a month because I was on a business trip as a guest speaker on mental health, and other subjects like paleontology and biology that I invested money into.
We sat down in front of her rose garden out front, and she asked how work has been. You know, casual talk. I noticed she looked uneasy and asked what was wrong, and she told me she was dying. They found a tumor, and she was scared. We had a long discussion about what she wanted to do, and how she felt about death, hospice, etc. It was very hard but I told her we'd get through this together.
Since I didn't have to hit the road for another week, I decided to spend that time with her. We took a trip to the beach for two days, ate good food, and did things her and I used to do all the time when I was growing up. That Thursday, three days before I'd have to go back and travel, we decided to hit up the movies. Going to the theater was always something special her and I did. I wish I remembered the title of the movie, but it was good. About midway through, she took my hand and said she was going to rest her eyes for a bit since we had a long day. I comforted her, and let her know she was safe and that when she woke up I'd tell her the rest of the plot. "I know you will sweetie. You've never let me down." were her last words. I didn't realize she had passed until the credits rolled and was distraught, but also I saw the humor in it as she would've. Gram was always one for morbid jokes. Alas it didn't console me much. She should've had at least another few months from what her doctors said.
I called 911, and had arrangements made to cremate her. That was her request. I called up my team members, and other folks I worked with that did the guest speaking shows, and cancelled my future travels until further notice and spent several days planning out her funeral. My mom died six years ago, and my brother moved to another state. Everyone else was out of the state too and couldn't make it. So it was just me taking care of things. I felt deeply sad, but took comfort knowing her and I spent time together. The day before the funeral, my aunt called after she got my message about what happened and she sadly reported that my cousin was dying too and didn't have much longer. She said she was going to book a plane to come help me out with post-funeral things.
As soon as I hung up the phone, I felt and heard this WHOOSH and my body lit up like it got slammed into a rinse cycle. My life flashed before my eyes, and then I woke up and I started crying hard.
I can't emphasis enough how incredibly real everything had felt. Time moved the same as it did here, so those days I had on the beach with my gram felt like 48 hrs. I can remember everything we did, the foods we ate, etc. all of it. I had a hard time distinguishing real life from what happened, and there was also this issue of trying to differentiate between my memories and "parallel me's" memories. I had to remind myself of a few things:
Other me was 35 and single. I'm 31 and have a partner.
My mom is alive and well, and my brother never moved out of state.
I'm currently in graduate school.
My gram has been dead since 2020, and her death was caused by heart disease and covid. I didn't get to say goodbye to her, and since we were under lockdown, the family didn't have a proper funeral for her until it was lifted.
I felt like I downloaded a whole other life into my head, along with 35 years worth of memories from this other me and it's been a trip unpacking it all.
