still thinking about self-explanatory vs. you need to explain via backstory d&d classes and, including artificer and two homebrew classes from actual play (blood hunter and witch) and keeping in mind this is only true for longform
Pretty self-explanatory; nice to have but you do not need to really engage with it to be good: fighter, rogue (though some subclasses shift down a level, particularly eldritch knight/arcane trickster)
I want to know how you became this thing but once that's established you're set: artificer, barbarian, bard, blood hunter, druid, monk, ranger, sorcerer
you better be prepared to be on the fucking ball the whole fucking time: cleric, paladin, warlock, witch, wizard

#I've played with irl atheists and catholics and everything in between#but it rarely feels like faith is a real factor for anyone-- DM or player#outside of‚ again‚ divine spellcasters and Big Epic Plot Things#I mean there are a couple of 'RAAAHGH FUCK THE GODS >:C' edgy backstory types but#no one is just Normally Culturally Religious and it's WEIRD#like it's not even a matter of faith in dnd! the gods are LITERALLY OBJECTIVELY PROVABLY REAL#so what does that MEAN for the average person! how does it shape language? business? culture?#where are the people wearing holy symbols like amulets-- or the way modern christians very casually wear crosses?#blessings over meals? prayers before bed? burnt offerings?#and like I enjoy thinking about world and culture building but I know that's A Whole Thing but even just like...#it doesn't feel like anyone believes in gods at all except clerics and paladins#like they DO because they factually exist but in the same way I 'believe in' like. the president of france.#like yeah he exists and is important to some people but has no bearing on my life whatsoever#that's such a fucking weird approach to the DIVINE in a polytheist world where those gods are YOUR CULTURE'S GODS??#I am bad at this myself but I'm not religious so it's harder for me to remember what Being Religious All The Time Casually is like lol#funny enough my character with the most intentionally religious background in this sense#is one of my ones who's ended up wrapped up in Big Plot God Things lmao#'aubree starts the campaign with a holy symbol of yondalla because of course she does why wouldn't she'#'oh okay well she's gonna get deeply and personally entangled with a bunch of death gods immediately' fdkjghkdf oh!! welp#you don't really pray to urogalan unless you're breaking ground for a new building or someone just died so it's STILL weird for her lol#but at least I had the framework there of 'oh yeah the gods exist and matter to me and my everyday life and culture' in general#about me#posts from twitter

my personal lovm review so far is that I don't mind most of the changes they're doing and I even like a few BUT that they have (so far) done my girl Raishan so dirty. I wanted to see her fight Thordak, goddamn it!
(also Vex was the one who came up with the idea to use Yenk for a vestige and they should've kept her doing that! establish her as a leader! smart! strategic! why is grog doing the planning asjfjsd I made a joke about how it's Travis Willingham breaking through Grog during a typical analysis paralysis section but man I wanted Vex doing it)

Tav Origins
So, I'm curious. What origins have ya'll made up for your Tav's in BG3? Cause if you're anything like me you constructed elaborate fucking backstories for those bitches.
I'd really like to know 'em! Reblog this post with yours!
And, as a show of good faith, here's mine.
First off, my Tav's name is Invi. He's a Tiefling Paladin, Oath of the Ancients, and how he came to be a member of that order is a bit of a story!
So, Invi was once an urchin living on the streets of Baldur's Gate. His family had been displaced by a greedy slumlord and his parents had died of the plague, leaving Invi all alone. Invi turned to thieving to avoid starving, but by all accounts he wasn't very good at it, escaping by luck more than skill.
But one day, Invi's luck ran out. He pickpocketed what looked like a wealthy man and was caught by the watch, who dragged him back tot he man for judgement. Turns out the man in question was a Paladin of Tyr, Sworn to the Oath of the Ancients.
Desperate, Invi lied, saying the man had given him the money. The guards didn't believe him, but when they asked, the Paladin looked at Invi for a good long while and said: "Of course! But, my young friend, you left so quickly! Did you forget I gave you this as well?"
And the Paladin gave him the Golden Ring on his finger, carved with the symbol of his order. The Paladin, named Cirion, bid the gards leave, and walked Invi to a safer place. There, Cirion said, "Now you be careful now boy. And if you're ever in need, let that ring guide you. And it may do far more than that."
Invi went on his way. He used the money, but he never dared part with the ring. He puzzled and puzzled over Cirion's words. Eventually it became too much for Invi, and he sought Cirion again, seeking answers for his strange behavior.
Invi tracked down the Temple of Tyr and showed the ring to the Paladin guarding it he was let in with a smile. Unfortunately, Cirion was away, but the Paladins were more than happy to allow him to stay.
So, Invi stayed, waiting for Cirion to return. But as the days turned to weeks, the Paladins offered him things other than food and board. They offered to show him sword work. How to sew and cook and other things. Before long, Inni felt at home there, terrified it would end when Cirion returned.
And return Cirion did. His cloak dusty from the road, his sword well-used from hunting demons, Invi was brought before him, and Invi asked his question.
"Why did you give me this ring?"
"You were a child in need, I believed you needed it more than me."
"I could not sell it. And it... it brought me here."
"Just as it brought me here, all those years ago."
And so Invi became Cirion's apprentice. He trained and grew and learned. He laughed freely. He brought aid to his fellow urchins, the ones he'd grown up with, providing them aid and succor and pulling them out of the streets when he could. The order was more than happy to provide. Gold, after all, is useless when hoarded like a dragon.
And on the day Invi took his Oaths and became a Paladin in full, he embraced the now old and worn Cirion and called him father, and never had either man felt more love and pride than they did in that moment.
And, years later, a Mind Flayer Tadpole in his brain and the gaze of a False God upon him, Invi is in The Grove, trying desperately to save the refugees there. When, in the midst of it, he's robbed by a pack of young tieflings.
Invi catches them, of course, he still remembers the old tricks. Some are annoyed, others are unrepentant, but the girl, Silfy, crying in shame and fear, that he sees something... familiar in.
Invi smiles, consoles her, and presses a familiar ring into her hand.

What did Shri'iia do that finally broke her oath? I love hearing about your bg3 character arcs, and my fav play through I was an oathbreaker durge- so I'm interested in hearing more!
so for some background context for Shri’iia - she was a paladin of Lolth who was in service to the matriarch of House Faen Tlabbar for like 100+ years or so. She’s kind of like the matriarch’s hidden weapon, no one knew about her existence except for the matriarch (bc before she was a paladin, she was just another commoner who didn’t belong to any noble house) and she was kept in the dark until her matriarch had some use for her. Like Menzoberranzan is a city that thrives in deceit and secrecy and the best weapon someone could have is a weapon that’s unknown to everyone else but completely loyal to you. Shri’iia agreed to this arrangement since didn’t belong to any noble houses prior - and she’s ambitious as hell lmfao she wanted to be at the top of their hierarchy. To her, she had everything to gain and nothing to lose - not to mention that the matriarchs were the closest beings to Lolth and through them, her will is re-enacted so how could she refuse? so she is like a well trained hound in a way, who’s completely loyal to the spider queen and her matriarch and she does not know anything else but to serve her spider queen bc Lolth is everything….!!!!
that is, until she gets kidnapped, tadpoled, and left in the surface
and the thing is, in all her years she has never once stepped foot in the surface. she hasn’t even explored the entirety of menzoberranzan bc she spent most of her days hidden away. not to mention everything she knows about the surface is from gossip and the horrible shit they tell you about how drows are hated there, and how you’ll be hunted like an animal the moment they see your red eyes, and all that terrible shit. so suffice to say shri’iia is terrified! she hasn’t even seen the sun ever before and she hasn’t touched grass either so now you’re expecting her to be fine when she’s left in a place that could kill her bc she’s a drow? not to mention the tadpole in her head? like early act 1 is just a stressful time for her and the fact that she joins up with these other tadpoled folks who could kill her anytime doesn’t make it less stressful
anyway, bc she’s so paranoid and rn she’s like a professional liar in her nature 🫶 (she’s a charlatan) she makes up this story about how she was born in the surface in some small town that has a population of less than 100, and she obviously does not worship Lolth ew and her oath? she follows a noble cause don’t worry about it (:. so she sticks by that back story to earn the other’s trust! and to save her own skin, more or less but by doing so she’s essentially hiding and being ashamed of her Lolth worship and oh that’s not -
in the ACTUAL game, shri’iia breaks her oath because she tells minthara where the grove is. in her head, what better way to punish a traitor of Lolth than to kill her where everyone is watching! 🤭🤭 like punishments for traitors has to public and humiliating like that is such a good plan (in her head!) except that she didn’t take into account that Lolth was getting tired of her ass for hiding her Lolth worship NOT to mention that she’s not acting like how a paladin of lolth should be acting like why are you listening to some man first of all (since I hc gale is the leader of the party). and by killing minthara in front of the grove she offhandedly saves the tieflings which is another 🫤🫤🫤 as a paladin of Lolth like she‘s gonna have such a bad grade in being an evil aligned paladin
So tl;dr - Shri’iia ends up lying about her entire backstory out of self preservation meaning that she has to lie about her Lolth worship. Lolth is a fickle and proud goddess who doesn’t stand by that shit and drops her ass, now Shri’iia spends the remaining half of act 1 in denial trying to win back Lolth’s favour or else she has to deal with the fact that her identity is essentially gone and she’s been abandoned by the goddess she has fully devoted herself to 🫶🫶

Thoughts about a DND character
It takes a village to raise a child, and it was certainly the work of the town to raise you. Your father loved you but he wasn't there and so you grew up eating from everybody's table. You kept growing, bold, brash, big and beautiful, and determined to raise the town right back. Wherever there was work to be done, you could be found making a start and rallying others to help. When you were older, almost full grown, trouble came a-calling in the form of an evil that thought your home should belong to them and you found yourself rallying the people once more, and turning your boldness and your brashness towards defending your home. You succeeded.
Initially.
Trouble, once it's found you, never really goes away and this was no exception. The threat kept returning and every time the cost of rebuffing it was greater. You sought help but came away with nothing. Those with the means to save you, to save your home, offered to pray but would not provide aid. Bitterness filled you up like poison but you fought it down. You were forced to flee.
A town is not in its brick and stone; it is in its people. They came with you. You had spent your childhood learning these people, how to talk to them, how to persuade them. They had been calling you their hero for years by this point. Of course they came when you called.
You wish they hadn't.
Now you're the hero of a town that doesn't exist. Bitterness fills you up again but now it tastes like grief. You leave your name with the people who loved you, whatever is left of them, and you leave. You wander, bringing the justice your people were denied wherever you can. You swear vengeance on the evil that caused this, both the threat itself and the inaction of those who could have saved you. You help people. You have to help people. You don't know who you are if you're not helping any more.
They've started calling you an answered prayer. You don't hold much stock in prayers so you shorten it to Answer and keep moving.

Born with the gifts of a storm sorcerer, Malus spent their youth learning everything they could about magic. Much of their tutelage came from a cleric of Deneir who would go on to swear them in as a paladin under the Oath of Devotion. They channeled their tempestuous abilities into thunderous, searing, and radiant smites, empowering their sword to protect the vulnerable and the helpless.
detailed ID: Malus is a tiefling with medium grey skin, glowing yellow eyes with black sclera, and curly pink hair pinned at the sides to create a mohawk effect. They have hall spiralled "minouros" horns, a short beard on their chin, and a septum piercing. They have faint markings in a symmetrical pattern on their forehead, and some slight scarring on their face from slashing wounds.
Their armour is plate and mail with large silver pauldrons and a light pink undershirt and accents on the breastplate. At ease, they wear a simple white shirt and brown trousers.
Karlach is a muscular tiefling woman with red skin, wild brown-and-red hair, golden cat-like eyes, and curling horns one of which is broken near the base. Flames ripple over her constantly. Wyll is a Black human man large curving horns. He has one eye that is red-on-black, and one that is a light grey stone prosthetic.
gif IDs (copied from alt):
A custom Baldur's Gate 3 character, a tiefling with pink curly hair and grey skin, lifts their head to reveal brightly glowing eyes, passing from pale yellow to pale blue. Text reads: Malus, Zariel tiefling.
Malus holds Orin's netherstone in their fist, looking up. Text reads: Sage background.
Malus reaches up to a bright light with their gauntlet. Text reads: Paladin, Oath of Devotion.
Malus stands in the sun with a surprised expression, which turns to a soft smile. Karlach and Astarion can be seen crossing behind them. Text reads: Neutral good alignment.
Malus, without their armour on, dances with Wyll. Malus smiles as they place their hand against Wyll's. It cuts to an overhead shot as they step together and apart gracefully, keeping their hands touching. Text reads: Wyll Ravengard, love interest.
Malus, Karlach, and Wyll standing in Avernus. Karlach offers a cigar to Wyll, who shakes his head with a smile, and then to Malus, who takes one. There is then a cut to a close up of Malus smiling. Text reads: Banes of Avernus ending.
