What is your favourite crow fact?

Not so much a fact as a thing that I have observed:

Crows can be kind of competitive about food. There seems to be a crow food snatching instinct that compels them to snatch food away from one another.

Juvenile crows also suck at feeding themselves. They'll learn to pick up peanuts before they learn to shell and eat them without help from an adult.

At least some of the time juveniles develop the "snatch peanut" instinct before they learn to open peanuts. This results in scenes in which they pick up a peanut, take it to an adult for help, set it down, then the "snatch peanut" instinct kicks in and they snatch it away. They realize that they still can't eat it, so they put it back down, but as soon as the adult goes to open it the self-defeating "snatch peanut" instinct kicks back in.

I have watched this play out on repeat for 5 minutes at a time as the very patient adult waits for the juvenile to get its shit together so it can eat.

Also worth noting: groups of juveniles will be left in the care of one or two adults (always funny to observe), so it's not always even the juvenile's parents who have to deal with this behavior. It could be an aunt or an uncle or an older sibling from the previous year who got roped into babysitting.

This excerpt is literally a Nicholas Rush Character Study 101.

The easy way Telford was sharing his past amazed Rush. He imagined telling Telford about Glasgow – the pain and the docks and the fish – and couldn’t picture it in any way that worked. He didn’t think he’d be able to get the words out, and yet sharing your past obviously didn’t have to be that way. He wondered if Telford would tell him about where he'd grown up, if Rush was even allowed to ask questions not pertaining to war. Had Telford been a person before the Air Force? When he’d just been David and there'd been no blood on his hands. Rush wanted to see the blood, wanted to see it spread onto himself, because if you were bloodied then it meant you’d fought. Even if you lost, people would know you’d fought.

HOW TO WRITE ROMANTIC ATTRACTION FOR DUMMIES

For anyone who wants to learn, (especially aro/ACE, aspec, ect.)

Alrighty! Welcome back or welcome to my blog! I'm dipping my toes back into the category of posts that gained me my exposure!

So if you're here, you want to know how to write romantic attraction/romance!

Strap in and let's begin!

(Pls spread this to people you think would benefit from seeing it, or anyone who requested it bc I forgot, ANY ASPECS)

Step one -

Your characters must admire one another at the beginning, Romantic feelings usually do not present themselves as obvious until you really think them through, meaning your characters may not notice they have a crush until it's too late

These are general statistics and light stereotypes. So feel free to not use this tip:

Male characters usually tend to notice physical things first, like body shape, hair, skin, clothing, the way their lover moves, ect

And Female Characters Generally tend to notice more small things and personality-based traits first, like their lover's humor, speaking mannerisms, shifts in expression, ways they fidget, emotion in their voice, ect.

And someone who is in love will generally show more interest in this particular person's movements, actions, words, and anything in general.

Step 2 -

The character will show more interest in sharing their love language with their lover/crush

Physical touch - People with physical touch love languages may want to hold hands, cuddle, hug, or just lean on their crush whenever they are close to them moreso than they want to with others

Gift giving - Gift givers will want to get more gifts more often for their crush, probably thinking of them whenever they see little trinkets or wanting to get them big gifts for special occasions or signs of appreciation

Acts of Service - Acts of service people will offer to do extra favors and a bunch of extra stuff they don't have to do twice as much as normal

Words of Affirmation - Flattery, they will generally flood their crush with kind words and compliments

Quality time - Quality time people will want to spend time with their crush at almost every turn, and when they want company, will turn to their crush first

Step 3 -

After a while, these urges while become very prominent and more noticeable to the person having them

They may find themselves fantasizing about their crush or having them show up in their thoughts more and more, feeling nicer and happier when they're around, or when they're thinking about them

Smiling when they think about them, cutsey little fluff thingies like that

A crush is essentially: I want to date that, I want to be near that always, I want to marry that, I want that to snuggle me (or other love languages)

Or in simpler terms: if that asked me out, I would say yes (or at least want to say yes if your character is in denial)

Step 4 -

The character's urges to be close to this person grows strong enough that they do smth about it, whether prompted by another character. Or they just don't know I how to not anymore (like when you wanna eat candy and you don't want to, but you do anyway bc I JUST NEED THE CHOCOLATE OKAY?)

People who are in love are generally very prone to be all dreamy and poetic and VERY EXTREMELY BIASED towards their crush

The Cycle of Reincarnation is experienced by the "Awakened Peoples of Kobani" (which beings are included in this is the topic of much debate).

An important aspect of understanding death in the Universe of Kobani, is its inherent impermanence. Nothing that dies, will stay dead. Ultimately all living things reincarnate; mortals, animals, plants, and even some non-living items like mountains, forests, houses, and ships. Spirits reincarnate in their own sense, though in their case it may be more accurate to refer to this as "reforming". Mortals, those who are among The Awakened, have the potential to eventually, after many mortal lives, enter the Divine Realm, something that Animals, Plants, and even Spirits, cannot do. There is no specific order or number of worlds/lives which a soul must be reincarnated into before it is allowed into the Divine Realm and this will vary from soul to soul.

The Cycle defines the boundary between spirit and mortal; where the former exists exclusively as a spiritual being with an indefinite and/or malleable form, the latter exists as a soul inhabiting a defined, physical body. When a mortal body dies, the soul receives judgment, a process by which, through their own judgment, it is decided if they should be reborn again in the same world, or continue on to be reborn in the next, each life coming closer to divinity. If reborn on the same world, the soul will not be burdened with the memory of the rejected life. A life may be rejected for any number of reasons: most commonly, the soul was too young to move on in the cycle, the soul was not satisfied or happy with that life, or the soul believes they did more harm than good during that life.

It is the duty of the deity, known in Kishite as Nahulpaha, to guide the dead soul, to help them with judgment, to act as a mediator between the different aspects of the self. While called the Judge, Nahulpaha does not actually provide a sentence, as this is ultimately the place of the deceased soul itself. It is rather the job of Nahulpaha to ensure that the soul remains honest with itself during its time of deliberation and judgment.

A soul which reincarnates into the next world will not remember its past life, however this does not mean that its past-life will not shape that individual's personality in some sense. Dreams, irrational fears, gut-feelings/beliefs, even tastes are often informed by previous lives. For this reason, while each reincarnation does represent a new person, there is typically some level of continuity when it comes to things like personality between all the lives experienced by a soul over the course of its journey through the Cycle. It is only upon reaching the Divine Realm, that the experiences and memories of all the lives are combined into one being, the ultimate expression of that soul and the culmination of its journey.

This final expression/being is not several souls/beings in one body, existing still as distinct entities, but is rather the combination of them all into a new entity.

To illustrate this imagine two glasses of wine, a red and a white, these represent the lives experienced by the soul. By pouring both of these glasses together into a bowl, you create something new. While this new concoction may express traits from both wines, ultimately neither of those old wines exist any longer, instead they have been replaced by an amalgamation, one which cannot be undone. The same can be said of reincarnated souls. While some part of each life and thus each person may live on through the Cycle, ultimately upon death marks the end of that individual as their own distinct being.

Ghosts and Spirits in the Lands of the Green Sea

In order to understand the nature of spirits and ghosts throughout the lands of the Green Sea it is important to lay out a few definitions.

Spirit

Spirits are real entities within the world of Kobani and the wider universe.

Fun Fact: The words used to refer to spirits throughout the Green Sea seem to be related, suggesting an origin which stems from a Pre-Calamity language, making said tradition thousands of years old. Kishite: Baba, Shabalic: Baba, Ikopeshi: Bebi, Apunic: Bap, Korithian: Buwa, Arkodian: Buwa, Pyrian: Pa, Various Western Makuric Dialects: Bama/Maba/Ma, Makorian Dialects: Bata/Pada The word for soul, Kishite: He(e)t, shows a similar level of continuity between languages.

Spirits are distinguished from beings like humans and animals by their dynamic nature. Their forms are not static in the sense that the human form is static, rather the size/shape/appearance of spirits may fluctuate typically in reaction to their mood or their environment or by conscious effort.

Spirits are broadly categorized into two categories Naturalistic and Celestial. Naturalistic spirits are born on Kobani itself and function primarily as personifications of certain objects, places, or phenomena, such as a tree, forest, mountain, the winds, fire, etc. Celestial Spirits on the other hand are born in the so-called "Celestial Spheres" or "Spirit Worlds" before finding their way to Kobani by some means. These spirits are not tied to specific locations or phenomena in the same way as Naturalistic spirits, as a result these spirits tend to be far more wide-roaming while also being far more alien, both in their nature and personality.

Great Spirits and Demons also fall under the category of Spirits. Both of these designations are human inventions. A Great Spirit typically refers to a particularly powerful spirit, typically one which is sapient (Spiritbloods are typically the result of a pairing between a so-called Great Spirit and a human.) Great Spirits often act as the personifications/guardians of large natural features such as mountains, rivers, or lakes. In the Kishite culture when a Great Spirit is prayed to or treated as a city guardian they are referred to as a Mountain Lord/God. Demon or Kosubaba, is a term used to refer to a spirit which is actively hostile towards humans in a way which is actively malevolent. Kosubaba are always sentient. This is not the same as territorial spirits or non-sentient species which may act violently or unintentionally cause harm. Demons typically hide in their lairs, still fearful of what few magical weapons remain, and from there they manipulate and play with humans. Demon/Kosubaba is not a true scientific classification, but a title. There are many hostile and territorial spirits but a demon is different, a demon wants mortals to enter their territory, like a spider waiting to catch a fly.

Souls

The Kishite word for the soul is he(e)t. The soul is the animating force within mortal beings, the purest embodiment of primordial creation within the living form. The soul is also the part of the being which carries on during the Cycle of Reincarnation, being reborn in new bodies throughout different worlds until the full development of that particular soul is considered sufficient to continue on to the domain of the divine. The soul is not necessarily tied to the mind or the state consciousness, as such the soul does not "degrad" or "decline" in time with the natural decline of the mind/mental function due to aging or injury. The soul is innately magic. Spirits do not have souls, at least not in the sense that mortal beings do. This is because, unlike with mortal beings, there is no distinct delineation between what is and isn't magic within their build-up, put more simply the form of the spirit is in itself "the soul". This means that if a spirit does reincarnate it is as itself, rather than forming a new entity and thus spirits do not progress through the Cycle of Reincarnation.

In the English language spirit and soul can sometimes be used interchangeably. This is not the case in Kishite, which brings us to the question of...

Ghosts!!!!!

So are ghosts real in Kobani? The short answer is no. The longer answer is sort of.

In the traditional sense a ghost is understood to be the lingering soul or a fraction/shadow of the soul which remains of a being after its death. In this sense ghosts in Kobani are not real.

The Cycle of Reincarnation is a phenomenon directed by and overseen by both the gods and by nature itself, it is not something which can be resisted or circumnavigated by mortals in any sense. When a mortal dies their soul will be reincarnated, either in a new world or once again on Kobani, no matter how much "unfinished business" that soul may have.

This of course has not stopped many myths from forming regarding ways in which the soul may become lost on the way to judgement or else shut off from reincarnation (Curses, heresy, etc.) but these are all fictional. Kishite children are often told scary stories of haunted battlefields and the souls of murdered wives stalking streets and abandoned homes, too filled with hate and sorrow to be reincarnated.

However, there is a phenomenon which may be mistaken for ghosts at first glance, spirits. As was previously mentioned, spirits often change their forms, sometimes in response to their environments. It is not unheard of for spirits which are in regular contact with humans, particularly with sages to adopt characteristics of those humans, sometimes even after those humans have passed on. As such it is not unheard of for the homes of recently deceased sages to be haunted for a short period of time by spirits imitating their voices or even hazy versions of their forms before moving on to better things.

Far more rarely but far more sinisterly, there have been several instances when spirits (often demons) have possessed the bodies of the very recently deceased, using said body as a mode to interact with and often to harm humans. In one particularly dark tale from the city of Chibal, a demon possessed the body of a recently deceased midwife and then used this macabre disguise in order to runaway with the new-born of the family that had hired that midwife, never to be seen again. Stories like this are one reason (among others) why it has become tradition in Kishetal to stand vigil over the deceased until their bodies show the first signs of natural decline/decay, lest a spirit/demon use the body for nefarious purposes.

“How is your mother these days?” The Duke questioned curiously.

“She’s quite well, thank you.” Peter raised his eyebrows, playing it cool as he changed the subject. “I heard what happened to your son. My apologies.”

Benjamin grit his teeth in appalment. ‘This fucking…..!!’

“Oh, word does travel quickly, doesn’t it?” Duke Matthias sighed low. “Do you know anything more?”

Peter shook his head and shrugged, thoroughly enjoying the power play internally, but externally keeping a chill posture. “Can’t say I do. But, he’s a clever one. He’ll be alright.”

The Duke of Port Mayor nodded in thanks as his son hid his face in chagrin nearby. Once again, Matthias struck up a conversation. “I heard you were entering the dance competition. I never knew you to be a dancer, Peter.”

Captain Hart nodded. “Indeed…” he glanced up briefly at the rafters, checking on the progress of his mateys while trying to remain unsuspecting. So far, so good. “….Did you ever get Benjamin into ballroom dancing?”

“I tried, but my son’s a stubborn one….” The Duke shook his head in disdain.

“He is that….” Peter smirked.

Benjamin couldn’t believe how dangerously Captain Hart played the game. ‘He’s going to blow our cover….! This moron is actually going to get us caught, all because he thinks he can one-up my father….’

“…I was curious where all of Benjamin’s friends went off to….” The Duke sighed. “….Dominique he—Uh…. disappeared about a decade ago as well. Glad to see one of them is doing well, at least.”

The blonde shrugged. “As well as could be.”

“So, who did you bring to dance with you?” The Duke inquired.

Benji gripped his wine glass tightly as the Captain craftily navigated the situation. “Her name’s Beth. She’s a bit timid….” Peter chuckled as he lied as effortlessly as he breathed. “….Paid a few extra coin to the tavern keep for this one.”

‘Ew, yuck….gross….’ Benjamin swallowed back his bile.

The Duke laughed heartily at Peter’s boldness. “Is that so? You know, I met Benjamin’s mother similarly….she was a castle maid I paid good coin to have….”

‘GROSS. GROSS. DISGUSTING.’ Benji had to physically restrain himself from dry-heaving.

Peter quickly redirected the conversation, sensing Benjamin about to vomit from nerves. “Turns out she’s a great dancer. Well enough to win it all, I’d say.”

“Is that so? Well…” Duke Matthias chortled. “….Good luck to you both then.”

“Thank you, and…” Captain Hart wrapped his arm around Benji’s waist, pulling him towards the dance floor as he called to the Duke of Port Mayor over his shoulder. “….Best of luck to you ….with finding your son.”

As he turned away, an evil smirk cornered Peter’s lips. Benjamin was shaking his head, pale and short of breath, as his shallow panting made him a bit dizzy.

“I can’t believe you DID that.” Benjamin whispered harshly under his breath, directing his ire to Peter.

as saturn puts it, there is a community notes system in their survivor's colony where people can send in little notes to saturn, and they'll read them on the show. for this show, the question i wanted to ask was if people would be interested in sending in "community notes" (via my askbox or direct messages) for saturn to read? they would either be anonymous, or attributed to a character in the show. i'm not sure how many would be used, but i think it's a neat idea!

Poorly Explained Magic System Tag!

since my main three WIPs all share the same magic system this is for all of them !

under the cut—it’s a lil long

Different species all have different definitions of magic

the Fae say it’s a part of the world and should be cherished and let free

the humans say it’s a tool, a weapon, and should be monitored

the godspawn say it’s a gift from the heavens

either way all of them deal with it so!

there is Innate magic (the one you’re born with) and Learned magic (the one you learn)

every Fae and Godspawn has Innate magic

about half of the human population has Innate magic too

for Fae and Godspawn it’s very limited, but powerful

^ for example, Sea Elves have unmatched Water magic, but that’s really all they can do I’m ngl

humans don’t have a set Innate magic and this makes them a sort of jack of all trades

anyways onto types

literally you can do anything with magic

and bc of that there are rules and regulations

don’t raise the dead, don’t mess with fate, don’t genocide anyone, yadda yadda

it’s classified into specific categories

Internal Magic: affects the user only (self teleportation, self healing, super speed)

External Magic: affects the world around the user (most anything really: mind reading, telekinesis, etc)

Elemental: long ago the four nations lived in harmony or wtv (Fire, Earth, Air, Water, Light, Shadow, probably more but I forgor)

and then there are people who have an Innate magic that mixes both Internal and External

🍽️ - What does a traditional meal look like in one of the cultures from your world (food, way of eating, and/or table manners)?

Oooh okay so this is a fabulous question. Fun fact, all of my worlds have foods that are unique to them, because that's something my brain does in its free time. I've been thinking about Shussuthas lately so I'll talk about them for this post but if you're interested in the other worlds let me know.

Now, Shussuthas is... interesting. And by that I mean it's a terrible place to live. Slavery is common and as a whole it's a very nasty dictatorship.

So on Shussuthas, the average lower class person eats the same thing every day, a compound that contains all their nutrients. The food and eating habits I’m going to be telling you about are those of the elite, who are allowed to eat real food.

Food:

Breakfast - a common breakfast on Shussuthas is lepiro (a type of bird kind of like a cross between a crow and a chicken) eggs, usually served with shishquo leaves (basically you take the like side bits off what's pretty much a giant tastier pinecone) and a type of honey tea that helps your throat when it's dry out.

Lunch - A common lunch would be a stew made with various types of tubers and root vegetables, as well as pumpkin. If you want something with meat in it you could add some ice worms. This will of course mean it has to cook longer, as the ice worms will cool the whole thing down.

Dinner - Some sort of edible bird (they eat most of them), likely spicy, served with again some root vegetables or mashed pumpkin, as well as a type of bread called gredbread which is very light and fluffy, usually salty, sometimes there's garlic or pepper (hot or black) involved too.

Dessert - A shishquo hollowed out and filled with this soft spongy stuff that's made of tree sap and pumpkin covered in a smooth minty cream stuff, and the shishquo is covered in dark chocolate, and it's on some leaves from a tree that's like a deciduous but it's evergreen called a vechhong, and it's soaked in honey and frozen so it's all crunchy.

On Shussuthas they never eat snacks, and they always take their meals at exactly the same time each day. It's a huge taboo to eat at a different time, you’re only allowed to eat at a different time if your schedule demands it, such as if you work the night shift, but even then you have a schedule and you stick to it. You also never skip a meal. If you were to be at someone's house and they offered you food and you said no you would be ostracized from society. They take their meals very seriously. Everything stops for meals. Oh you've been seriously injured? Sorry we can't help you, the doctor’s eating lunch. And the patient would understand and food would be brought to them because it's lunch time. You might die but you didn't skip a meal.

As for table manners, if you’re commenting on someone's cooking you have to tell them what specifically you did or didn't like about it so they can improve, otherwise it's very impolite.
