With Fit gone, Pac breaks into Philza's little hut more and more often (as if he wasn't already given permission to enter whenever). DSU alum to premier original music based on text from best-selling memoir

Dickinson State University (DSU) alumnus Charlie Leftridge graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in music in 2012 and hit the ground running. After graduating from DSU, Leftridge went on to receive his Masters in Music Composition from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and now works as the administrative coordinator for the Mankato Symphony Orchestra.

Leftridge recently received a grant via the Prairie Lakes Arts Regional Arts Council of Minnesota, enabling him to premiere a song cycle for soprano and string quartet based on text from Joan Anderson's New York Times' best-selling memoir A Year by the Sea.

“I received a $3,000 artist grant, provided by the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council from funds provided by the McKnight Foundation,” said Leftridge. “With the funding, I spent the last six months writing a nine-movement song cycle for soprano and string quartet. My best friend and soprano Katie Pacza, who will be performing the premiere, and I decided to acquire the creative rights to ‘A Year by the Sea.’”

Leftridge will be presenting the premier Friday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mankato, Minnesota, with a performance by Katie Pacza – soprano, Clark Potter – viola, Karen Becker – cello, and Ioana Galu and Sonja Bundy – violin. Special guest speaker Joan Anderson will also be present.

“Amazingly enough, the author has agreed to come to the premiere!” exclaimed Leftridge. “Joan will give a pre-concert talk about her book and our collaboration, which will then be followed by the performance and a reception at the Twin Rivers Arts Council in Mankato.”

As a 2012 graduate of DSU’s music program, Leftridge sang in the choir, played in the band, and wrote music for various ensembles, under the direction and mentorship of Dr. Bruce Southard.

“He is a wonderful talent. He has a beautiful tenor voice,” said Marilyn Lee, chair of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at DSU. “At performances his music compositions were a standout. Not only is he as hard working as he is talented, he’s an outstanding person with an outgoing personality.”

His colleague and friend, Katie Pacza, earned her Bachelor of Arts at Iowa State University and her Master of Music degree at the University of South Dakota. She is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Pacza has a particular interest in contemporary art song and opera for young audiences.

Pacza was selected to perform the role of Countess Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro) with the Seacrest Opera Tour of Nebraska. Pacza has also performed on master classes led by Martin Katz, Barbara Hendricks and Elizabeth Vrenios. She was invited to participate in the Redwoods Opera Workshop in Mendocino, California, where she performed three scenes under the guidance of a renowned faculty.

I do imagine Philza has a lot of jewelry. There's a small chest of things Techno had given him, that remain only for Philza, with only a couple pieces going to Wilbur and the kids. There is a much bigger chest with other jewelry and other shiny things that Philza has pulled a bird and taken, and it's these pieces he gives out.

Pac mostly gets given pieces with sapphires, Philza saying that they remind him of Pac. Sapphires glitter like the ocean in the sun, depths of blue sparkling set in gold.

The sun doesn't reach Pac where he is now. The sapphires seem dim, almost as if they've turned black so far beneath the waves, so far from Philza and everyone Pac loves.

When Forever said he wanted Philza to himself, he never meant for this to happen. Watching Pac get teleported away, unable to do anything, knowing that he had been taken again. Seeing Mike fall apart without Pac, seeing Philza become more and more despondent the longer Pac is gone even if Philza is managing to hide it better.

As much as Forever always wanted Philza's attention only on him, all of Philza's love only for him, Forever never wanted this. Never wanted to make Philza sad. Never wanted to lose a friend.
