Anyway as I've learned recently a good sequel builds off the first, expands lore etc etc. Pacrim is a bad sequel when it comes to Mako and the first movie and it obliterated everything Del Toro believed in in the first movie but Newmann, _Newmann_. I'm sorry but their arc was good. I can believe that Newt would go so far into drifting with kaiju bc he seeks knowledge. Hermann is comfortable in his numbers but Newt doesn't believe in those like him. He wants to talk, interview god himself and he can with the precursors. Drifting is a 2 way street so while yes he's getting answers to the questions burning him since childhood, they're exerting their control, cutting him off from his support group, from Hermann. It probably took one look inside their minds and decided that out of the scientists, Newt was the more malleable one

uprising is a bad movie but you can’t deny that charlie day acted his ass off & sold the role completely despite it all… no matter what at least we still have charlie days sad pathetic eyes welling with tears as the evil aliens possessing his brain force him to hurt The Man He Is In Love With. And They Have Sex, By The Way.

i think the best part about the newmann elevator fight Uprising has to be like. the fact that these guys are a team of hired and armed professionals and they get beat up by two nerdy gay middle aged men with the least training out of anyone in the whole building. and it isn’t even a near thing. Hermann single handedly whoops the asses of 3 guys with nothing more than his cane and a decade of repressed homosexual yearning. fucking incredible

I will say that my favorite Pacific Rim fic trope is actually from Uprising, where Newton is kept in a cell and they bring Hermann to ask him questions because either there's some agreement or Newton (who is obviously being controlled) asks for him

And Hermann is still so absolutely in love with him and is broken on the inside when seeing Newton for the first time in years chained to the metal chair in the middle of the empty room. And Newton, who isn't himself, is snarking at him before letting Newton talk to Hermann. And Newton just begs for his misery to be over.
