Something I love about how Pride and Prejudice is told through an omnipresent narrator, aside from the witty remarks and insight into other characters it allows even though it's usually focused on Elizabeth, is how it plays on the audience's own prejudices and assumptions.
The narrator tells us very early on, chapter 4, that Darcy is "haughty, reserved, and fastidious, and his manners, though well-bred, were not inviting." We've already seen that when we meet him the previous chapter, and will see more of it in those following. But it's the readers, along with Elizabeth, who take that observation as not only a list of flaws (despite only the first actually being negative) but presumes even more damaging flaws must be attached to it. Darcy can be off-putting, especially so in the setting we meet him in: he dismissed Elizabeth within earshot of her, didn't engage with people attempting to converse with him, etc. It's easy to assume the worst of him in a world so driven by social niceties, and because we follow Elizabeth, who is so lively and playful amidst the rules which govern society. Elizabeth thinks he's bad tempered? It would make sense - he hasn't shown consideration for others much socially, why would he care when he's angry? He acted from resentment and jealousy and went against his father's will? That's not such a jump after the conclusion of a bad temper, his own acknowledgement of implacable resentment, and evidence of pride. The awareness of one offensive trait so naturally leads to prejudice against it, that we easily assume still worse qualities must exist. We are as mistaken as Elizabeth.
Even the idea that 'No, Darcy was never haughty or rude, he was just shy and misunderstood, the narrator is wrong' is just magnifying that prejudice. Yes, we do find out later that Darcy is not at ease among strangers, and was always intrinsically good; his morals and core values meant he was never as bad as Elizabeth believed. But that doesn't mean he was without flaws, and it's so fascinating that some analysis of his character seek to completely remove the negative traits which he eventually overcame after acknowledging them in himself. The logic seems to be that they feel if he had them in the start that he isn't actually such a good person. It's just another example of being so prejudiced against certain flaws that it's impossible for some people to reconcile that there doesn't have to be more serious failings attached, and someone can still be a good person despite being arrogant and not always nice. It's, ironically, being prejudiced in the exact same way that Elizabeth was at the start of the novel. It's amazing that Jane Austen was able to tap into that aspect of human nature so deftly, and invoke in both in her main character, and readers to this day.
Now, of course, the story is so well known it's rare for anyone to read it blind, so it's less likely anyone will be unaware of Darcy's good qualities despite first seeing his worst. Even if they do, Pride and Prejudice has become so genre defining that new readers who are the slightest bit genre savvy will be more aware than contemporary audiences were. But even if we know the story it's still so understandable why Elizabeth feels the way she does. We see what she sees and feel her conclusions make sense. Just as, even though the narrator tells us Darcy is starting to catch feelings for Elizabeth, we fully comprehend her not noticing and believing there's a mutual dislike. And though that is concrete evidence of Elizabeth not reading Darcy and his motives correctly, we are still so sympathetic of the basis of her prejudice that her continued belief in Darcy's lack of virtues makes sense from her point of view. We can see, as she later will, that she takes it too far, and should have noticed evidence to the contrary, but her prejudice against him based on his early behaviour and her pride at reading people correctly is so understandable.
Basically, in a story about the characters' pride and prejudices, I love, love, LOVE how the narrator's voice brings out those same traits in readers the exact same way we see it presenting in Elizabeth. We're all on that journey with her, and we can likewise learn the same lessons about ourselves as she does. Pride and Prejudice feels timeless, because even though society and thus the nuance changes, the book is about human nature, and that remains essentially the same.

sing my lullaby [ keegan p. russ ]
Tumblr media
m' so tired just wanna give him a smooch n cuddle
cw: none, fluff, civilian & fem!reader, keegan n' cute aggressions.
When Keegan gets home from deployment, his biggest present is nothing but the comforting warmth of your body. Clothed in his t-shirt that was too big for you, your body was sprawled across the bed, the sweet sight brought a warm smile to his face. In careful silence, he leaned his weight onto the bed, letting his knee sink into the plush sheets, adoring your drooling face of dreaming.
His hands are so cold, making you whine as his hands slip under his your shirt. Cold palms gently rub your belly as he curls into the crook of your neck, kissing the soft flesh. Soft murmurs leave your lips, words incoherent even in silence until your dry voice croaks into his hair,
"Keegan...?" Although cracked from sleep, in his eyes, your lips move like soft clouds of the heavens as they utter his name. Your voice too angelic to be speaking such cursed name of a war criminal, his husky voice hushs you softly, lulling you back to sleep as his arms weigh on your body like bulky stones. "Missed you."
The strings of his heart tighten, utterly infatuated with you. Such simple words, only two words, has his eyes burning as he stared at your closed eyes, unable to restrain the beam of affection the grew on his face.
"Missed you too, princess." His heart empties itself in silence as he leans his body on top of yours, chests colliding as he purrs into your skin in satisfaction, kissing the shoulder exposed by the collar of his shirt. Two hands in motion, one twisting your hair, even when you told him not to mess with it, the other gently caressing your tummy. He wants to crawl into your skin, nibble on your supple, silken skin until it's all he wants, because it is all he wants.
Warm turned cold as your voice rang with an irritated whine, lazily searching for the blanket. His smile only deepened with adoration, lips sluggish to kiss your cheek, the hand you saw as the bane of your bad hair days reached for the duvet. Warmth envelopes both of your figures, even so, your bodies stay interlaced, his hand returning to cup your head.
You murmur in your sleep again, an exhausted chuckle escaping Keegans lips as your hands rises to pet his hair. His face heats up, his vision blurry as he melts into you, his most cherished woman, as the urge of sleep overtakes him mind. Quiet arpeggios echo in his ear, rich sounds even with your dry throat. Still damp, your hands caressed his hair, working like a tender pacifier, soothing his aching body to join yours into the mindless azure of sleep.
He missed this, your voice, your soft hands. Keegan missed brushing his lips on your warm, supple skin, foolishly doing anything that you pleased. His body relaxed against yours, the weight of war rescinding from his strained shoulders. His hands paused, trembling in overwhelming love, heart rippling under the trained muscle across his chest as he pressed his nose further into your neck.
He wants to squeeze you in his arms until your head feels like it'll pop, he wants to memorize every millimeter of your perfect skin, he wants- needs to know every little of your body. He wants to pinch your cheeks until you squeal, wants to make sure eyes inch of your visible skin.
He sighs into your skin, mind numbing with your gentle tune that easily tamed his thoughts for the morning after, when he knew he could pinch and bite at you, even to your feigning of dismay, he knew you loved it.
Keegan knew you loved him, just as much as he loved you.

do other fields have this thing where 80% of people who are, in theory, mid-career experienced professionals are barely capable of performing fairly basic tasks without personalized guidance, or is software development just suffering under the curse of an entire generation being told to go into the field if they want to earn enough money to pay rent

Everytime I see that "fandom is worse now because all the POPULAR KIDS got into it" post or any of the bajillion similar ones I die a little on the inside. You all sound like a 34 year old white cishet self identified gamer scoffing about how "all these girls pretend to like anime when IN MY TIME they would have bullied me for being a nerd" before he goes on to watch 4 more videos from a youtuber who participated in gamergate.

Suppose you have 2 paths p : x ↝ y and q : y ↝ z. What's a better symbol for their concatenation, the path (p ? q) : x ↝ z?
(That is to say, we have 2 continuous functions p,q : [0;1] → X, with endpoints p 0 = x, p 1 = q 0 = y, q 1 = z. )

#random personal stuff#the search for a new library director goes on#right now our only applicants (as far as I know) are:#A) man with uncanny similarity to That Man in appearance speech and mannerisms and who has already acted shady#B) woman with a teaching background who just started working on her library degree (a position requirement)#and C) one of our current librarians who lacks the necessary people and technology skills and has a p o l i t i c a l agenda#so you see the difficult position the hiring committee is in#I'm not on this committee of course#but as someone who would have to work under whoever they chose I have concerns#I could not work for someone who was like That Man - wouldn't be able to trust him and would be constantly on edge#(even if he somehow turned out to be just fine despite the bad signs - I would have a hard time shaking those associations)#and I couldn't work for my current co-worker either#we've already got a clique here with him and another guy and his being in charge would just further enable existing problems#and there would be nothing I could do about it - it would be the two of them running things to suit themselves#and we need someone with a library degree because it's important to the role and apparently it's also been made clear#that certain people who do have such degrees wouldn't respect anyone who didn't yet#but to be frank if these were the only options I would rather have the person with the degree in progress#who reportedly seems to have the better leadership skills#the lack of a degree is something that can change with time#but personal qualities are more fixed#& as important as a library degree is I have seen that it doesn't necessarily make one able to make the best decisions for a library
