I love how Xanatos, who will be our main villain, was first shown in full daylight, looking expectantly up at a castle it sounds like he's been trying to locate for some time.

It's his assistant Owen who we watch emerge from shadow, cool and collected and worried about costs.

Given we don't know the roles of all the players yet, this could be a nice little misdirect. Xanatos is full of life and eager and bulldozing on with a passion that doesn't consider 'astronomical costs.' Those are usually traits reserved for protagonists I feel like. So maybe the villain will be the man close to the wealthy guy. Perhaps there's internal strife and betrayal. Own is far more suspicious than Xanatos just yet.

We move on to more explicitly stated risk. Not only is this venture incredibly costly and we don't yet even know why Xanatos is undertaking it, but he just ran alone into a castle known locally to be haunted, which we didn't know before, though certainly we could see that there could be risk of going into ruins that may be structurally unsound before.

I also really love that after Owen mentions the cost, Xanatos's response utterly ignores it, and he's looking at Goliath as he first speaks over Owen's concerns. Just, 'hire the crews!'

So I lost a The Hills Between You and Me sequel in progress in a computer crash like 25 years ago that involved Rowan being trapped on Avalon due to the Sisters pulling a coup d'etat while Owen is stuck in Manhattan and I'm still angry about it apparently. Enough so that I am trying to recreate something from memory from 1997.

What I continue to miss most however was the bit where David Xanatos had to explain the birds and the bees to Owen Burnett, which is of course why I'm starting there instead of the actual beginning of the story with Brooklyn figuring out what he wants as his boon is to go to Avalon and meet the Eggs.

(Because I am evil, I have always been vastly entertained by Owen and Rowan going at it like minks without realising all their human parts are in perfect working order and designed that way on purpose because for 1000+ years due to the low fertility rate of immortal beings unplanned faerie pregnancies are basically a statistical impossibility and they're absolute idiots.)

and the only reason I am not writing the story now that I had planned and outlined and already started then was because in the intervening 30 years, Seanan has written something so much better than I ever could have with Toby and Tybalt in the most recent October Daye novels that now I need to build a new plot from the ground up that doesn't involve Rowan's surprise unplanned pregnancy.

But sneaking Titania's mirror into the dingbats for those novels was absolutely 3000% deliberate on my part because I am a massive dorky nerd and I knew it would make at least 4 specific people laugh.

I was kind of thinking about Owen's future girlfriend and how she’s gonna be introduced into the series then I thought of an idea concept where Preston was dating her already but Owen came in and took his place and she thinks that it’s still Preston (right now the idea is very fresh in my mind so still kinda developing in my mind) and here a peace of art for my idea

It amuses me quite greatly that Owen just leads Elisa to the elevator and just sends her on her way. He is more thorough than that.

I can't help but wonder if the creators hadn't decided on Owen's back story yet or if this is some early mischief showing through. I know that it is done this way mostly for story. Because we have to get Elisa back in the castle by herself. But I don't like to leave it at just that. Not when it's so much more fun to contemplate.

I can't help but suspect that Owen kind of wants to see Elisa face the reality. She bulldozed her way in, waving aside excuses, prompting Xanatos into the little white lie that marked Owen as someone who gets 'confused', and openly remarked on an observation that for most would make her sound crazy. Perhaps he's curious what she would do when faced with the actual reality. I can imagine Owen might be one to look at humans face-to-face with gargoyles, fighting them, and remarking on how they're wearing masks, and be fascinated at the ways people will convince themselves that the world still works exactly as it always did while facing down something that breaks all the rules.

Perhaps if the little detective gets a taste of what is actually happening here, she will run away and never bother them again, unable to face something that challenges everything she knows about the world. He seems to say, 'are you really so sure you don't want to believe a generator exploded like the rest of New York will?'

If so, he's got another thing coming. Owen does enjoy being surprised by people after all. He should be happy at how this turns out! XD

Rewatching The Gentlemen and questioning the timeline. It's been 11 years since the Duke brokered the agreement between Bobby Glass and the other 11 landed gentry with country estates, but it's implied the farm at Halstead Manor has only been in operation for 5 years.

Also Geoff says he's been there since before Freddy and Edward were in long trousers, but boys usually are about 8 when they make that transition and 20 years ago, Theo James was significantly north of 8 to the tube of a decade plus. So either Eddie and Freddy are meant to be much much younger than their actors, or Guy Richie can't count.

I'm still in a Gargoyles headspace, and keep thinking how much Johnston and Xanatos have in common. Tho Stevens is more Vogel than Owen. But the relationship dynamics still feel very similar.

I'd also missed Tamsin calling Edward 'Wina' and that's too perfect. I still want to know who christened her Wham Tam (Thank You, Ma'am).
