Nearly 10 years after it aired and it’s still one of the best sets I’ve ever heard. I wonder what the next 10 years will be like and what music will help get me through it.
Would love it if everyone who came across this post would take the time to listen to this whole set.
Tracklist
1. One More Chance/Stay With Me - Remix by Notorious B.I.G.
Biggie is the first rapper I ever liked. I remember loving this song as a child, funny how as a teen this beat came back around to me. I believe the sample was also used by Ashanti on ‘’Foolish’’ which is what probably made me like Biggie’s version mo much. The chopped and screwed portion of this song at the end is so mind melting. I miss the sounds of 2011 when different artists like A$AP & SALEM would expriment with those deep vocals. Drake made a similar sounding experimental track last year ‘’Screw The World - Interlude’’.
2. 21 Questions - 50 Cent & Nate Dogg
50 Cent was probably the second rapper I can probably remember. I remember saving up enough money to buy his album ‘’The Massacre’’ in 2005. G-Unit used to be so cool, before we guys my age started calling each other fags, the ultimate diss was to be told you were ‘G-UNot’. That shit would hurt me to my core. I wanted to write out some of my favourite lyrics for this one but I’d end up having to give you the entire song.
3. Some of Your Love - Partynextdoor
I’m gonna be repeating myself a lot but I love this song. The Partynextdoor tracks on this playlist never released officially. Maybe only 1 of them did. These are such hidden gems. I remember freaking out in 2015 the night it aired.
4. Just A Rider - Partynextdoor
‘’I think that coupe wasn’t meant 3….’’
Favourite Partynextdoor song. 20/10
5. Make It Rain - Partynextdoor
Great song to drive to but it’s more of an interlude track.
6. I’m Single - Lil Wayne
7. Cameras / Good Ones Go Interlude - Medley - Drake
Such a great era of Drake. 2011-2016, before Toronto really got a ton of exposure with the Raptors and stuff in the coming years of 2017, 2018 & 2019. Toronto’s scene used to be really underground, niche and grimey. I miss that feeling in the music but Take Care era Drake is almost unmatched, prior to all that gangster cronie brodie shit got way too carried away.
8. Only You (feat. The Notorious B.I.G. & Mase)
One of my all-time favourite songs, top 5. 10/10.
9. Wait For You - Partynextdoor
10. Unknown Track/Verse - Unknown Artist
Good verse, wish I knew who it was.
11.

PLEASE infodump about drake
okok this is specific to the drake/kendrick drama but i can also do a drake one too - im assuming you know basically nothing. & i barely know this shit so correct me if im wrong. also this will be routinely updated so! check in :D
2011 - Take Care (album) by Drake features Kendrick Lamar on the track Buried Alive Interlude
2012 - Drake has Kendrick open for his Club Paradise Tour. The same year they both feature on A$AP Rocky's song Fuckin Problems (also with 2 Chainz)
2013 - Kendrick called out a few rappers (J. Cole, Pusha T, Big Sean, etc.) including Drake. Drake responds saying he had no response, basically. They do this again the same year (Kendrick says shit, Drake doesnt respond)
2016 (ish) - They continue subtle beef (Kendrick saying Drake has ghost writers, Drake saying Kendrick "sold out")
2023 - First Person Shooter by Drake and J. Cole drops (their first collab since 2013). In the song Drake mentions "the big three" in reference to himself, J. Cole, and Kendrick
2024, Mar. - Like That by Metro Boomin' and Kendrick Lamar drops. In it Kendrick responds to Drake, saying "the big three ... it's just big me", implying that Kendrick is above Drake and J. Cole. Drake attempts to ban Like That from the radio.
2024, Apr. - Push Ups by Drake is released. The song is about how Drake believes Kendrick is being extorted - the track referencing the phrase "drop and give me 50".
2024, Apr. - Taylor Made Freestyle by Drake is released, his second diss track at Kendrick. Here Drake disses Kendrick for "selling out" specifically in reference to Bad Blood by Taylor Swift ft. Kendrick Lamar. Drake also used AI vocals of Snoop Dogg and Tupac - this resulted in him almost being sued by Tupac's Estate. Drake wiped the song from his sites
2024, Apr. - Euphoria by Kendrick Lamar is released. The track is 6 minutes long, cut down from its original 19 minutes. The title is in reference to the TV series Euphoria which Drake is an executive producer of - it's also referencing the sexualisation of underage people, something done by the show and (allegedly) Drake himself. Within the track Kendrick makes fun of Drakes accent, how Drake says the n-word, how Drake dresses... and a fuck load more
2024, May. - 6:16 in LA by Kendrick Lamar releases, less than 72 hours after Euphoria dropped. This track specifically disses Drake for having ghost writers/lots of co-writers. He also implies that Drakes friends are stabbing him in the back and selling his info. This track is co-produced by Jack Antonoff, who co-writes and co-produces for Taylor Swift.
2024, May. - Family Matters by Drake is released. I want to be honest with you, i didn't listen to this until i got this ask. This track implies Kendrick beats his wife. Drake also disses other rappers such as A$AP Rocky, Future, etc.
2024, May. - Drake releases a Buried Alive Interlude Parody on his Instagram
2024, May. - Meet the Grahams by Kendrick Lamar is released. In this track (which is by far my favourite of all the tracks) Kendrick calls Drake a deadbeat dad and accuses Drake of having another secret child (apart from Adonis). Kendrick has a verse dedicated to this supposed child in which he basically parents her - teaching her all the things Drake wont. He also implies Drake struggles with alcohol and gambling
2024, May. - Not Like Us by Kendrick Lamar is released. The fourth diss track from Kendrick. In this track Kendrick alleges that there's pedophiles and trafficking within OVO (an indie record label founded by Drake). Kendrick also says that every rapper who's complimented Drake is lying and now hates him for using Tupac's vocals through AI. This track includes my favourite line "Tryna stike a chord and it's probably A-Minor"

On "Meet the Grahams" and the Moral Turn That Happened During This Beef
I know that I am on hiatus right now, but there is a lot on my chest regarding the rap beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake that is really making me feel uneasy.
I am a Kendrick Lamar fan, I have been a Kendrick Lamar fan since the 6th grade after hearing "Swimming Pools" so much on the radio that it just became a song stuck in my head. Kendrick is an excellent lyricist, performer, artist, and writer. And while Kendrick is all of these things, he is not the pinnacle of a moral high ground.
The moment that the rap beef between Drake and Kendrick turned into a battle of morals, it dawned on me that we absolutely missed the plot. The point is, neither Drake nor Kendrick are good people, and neither one of them are associated with upstanding people either. It gets incredibly weird to see specific arguments they make about each other when they have either done the thing they have criticized the other over or are affiliated with someone that has.
Neither one of them actually care about what they are accusing the other of doing because if they did, the authorities would have been called by now.
Drake in "Family Matters" alleged that Kendrick has put his hands on his wife, Dave Free fathered one of Whitney's children, Kendrick doesn't care for black women, etc.
Kendrick said in "Meet the Grahams" that Drake has hypersexualized black women, he is a deadbeat father, he is a sex trafficker only comparable to Harvey Weinstein and Diddy, he is a pervert, and he is a substance abuser.
Drake brings up Whitney being allegedly abused, but he has sex traffickers in his circle. An example is Baka, a member of his inner circle, who got shouted out ("I'll declare it a holiday as soon as Baka get back on the road") for sexual abuse crimes after forcing a 22 year old in prostitution and went to jail. Upon his release in 2017, he was signed onto OVO sound. Why bring up a woman's trauma when you are aligning yourself with someone who has also traumatized women?
Kendrick brings up the hypersexualization of black women but has also had women scantily clad in his "Loyalty" music video. Kendrick brings up Drake's substance abuse as if he has not also abused substances. Kendrick brings up being a deadbeat father as if he did not hop on a track that blew this beef up with Future, who is notorious for fathering a bunch of children and practically being a deadbeat. He also discusses Drake's perversion as if Kodak Black, who faced charges of sexual assault, was not featured on Mr. Morale, which Kendrick himself slated as his "therapy album."
I feel like all of these moral flaw arguments are incredibly disingenuous because none of this would have been brought up had they not beefed with each other in the first place.
It feels a little icky? Like yes we should protect women, children, and people in general, but that conversation doesn't get to start because you guys are fighting. If anything, it should have started awhile ago.

hullo! I read your chapter of your au with the Very Horrible Lex and the Very Baby Kon and the Very Sad Clark and i love it sosososo much! The GOOD ANGST my dood.
I want you to know i’ve been daydreaming abt it. Heck, i was daydreaming WHILE reading it- i mean that’s actually normal for me when i’m invested in smthn, but fr i kept getting distracted by So Many Thoughts and Feelings tm. Took me longer to read than it should’ve but rest assured that’s a positive thing!
i read the fic you based it on, and it was great! But so far im liking yours better >v>
I wanna see the rescue and the recovery! I wanna see it get worse first! I wanna see Clark attempt to raise Kon the best he can in the worst of circumstances! The love and human connection thriving even in the midst of a hurricane of cruelty— it’s so good bestie!
uhh anyway! The point of this ask: I wanna know, how did you come up with the title? “We shall be free; we shall find peace”? oVo?
Thank you!! That's basically how it came about, daydreaming about the fic that inspired it!
So I really love the fanfic tradition of using lowercase AestheticTM song lyrics as titles. Fic is already inherently intertextual, and I think it's fun to add another layer of intertextuality onto that; I named one of my other fics with a lyric mostly because 1. the lyric fits their relationship! and 2. the juxtaposition between Wholesome Radio Pop Lyric and soft d/s xeno tentacle pwp still makes me laugh.
At first the draft was just called 'horrible lex au,' and then I thought about using two other quotes before settling on the title. That's the tl;dr of it all, the rest of this is under a cut for plot spoilers for the overall arc of the entire fic, and also so, so much rambling:
The first title I was thinking about was be sure your heart is brave from Aeschylus' Agamemnon, but that quote is the chorus speaking to Cassandra right before she's about to be killed; her bravery is a heavy burden reaction to the monstrous injustices that have brought her to that point, like Clark and Kon... but then she's brutally murdered. Plus the power dynamic situation is... let's say, very different. It's an extraordinary, immortal line but the narrative arc I've got planned strays too far from the original arc, and in the end I decided I didn't want the shadow of a way better tragedy hanging over my little fanfic.
Chorus: Woman, be sure your heart is brave; you can take much. Cassandra: None but the unhappy ever hear such praise.
The next line I was thinking about went too far in the other direction, taste a morning out there, which is from one of the best 'I Want' songs, Out There from the Disney Hunchback of Notre Dame. Quasimodo's story of being thought monstrous and being imprisoned and gaslit by a socially powerful manipulator parallels Clark and Kon better than Cassandra's, but in the end the literal line itself doesn't fit right with either Clark or Kon. Clark, at the beginning of the fic, has atrophied to the point where he can only conceive wanting for such things through wanting them for Kon, and Kon, as we'll see soonish, isn't locked up underground the way Clark is. Plus, the fic is... lighter than the Orestia for sure but a hell of a lot grimmer than Disney, lol. I do have it on my writing playlist though.
So in the end I went back to one of my absolute favorite pieces of media ever, Fidelio. We shall be free; we shall find peace is a line from the Prisoner's Chorus in that opera. The solo prisoner that sings the line invites the rest of the prisoners to begin hoping, and from there, despite the sobering reminders of the dangers they face, that they're being watched, the music swells into a yearning for freedom so powerful it's difficult to understand how it passed the censors in 1805.
First solo: Hope whispers softly to me: We shall be free, we shall find peace. Chorus: Oh Heavens! Salvation! What happiness! Oh freedom, freedom, will you return? Second solo: Speak softly! Be on your guard! [The jailer's] eyes and ears are on us.
And then - the head jailer returns, and the prisoners are brought back to reality, forced back into their dark cells at the end of the act. The temporary respite is over.
Farewell, warm sunshine - how quickly you fly from us. Night is fallen upon us, from which no day shall break.
The simple act of hoping is like a breath of fresh air, temporarily alleviating their suffering, but it doesn't materially change their circumstances; it takes a number of outside forces to do that, which will be paralleled in the fic. Love and hope is all they have, and it's not enough, but it does make the torment bearable until Bruce/Leonora uncovers the extent of The Horrors and Diana/Don Fernando can deus ex machina everyone into the sunlight.
All in all, the line is a very succinct summary of the plot. Clark and Kon will be free, and they will find peace, but they have to find out what both of those mean, reclaiming their agency in the process.
oooor at least that's the plan. chapter 2 is about 90% edited and can probably be ready this weekend, I hit a little plot snag in chapter 3-5 so chunks of that are undergoing rewrites, but the good news there is that the rewrites are SO much better than the original draft and there will be some bats showing up earlier than there otherwise would have been. I did uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh kind of lose my job a few days after posting the first part, so updates will be slower than I'd like, especially since I'll have to move to a different state if I get the positions I'm currently applying to 😓

Lemme hear your songs :3
2/4/9/12/17/21/23 :3
I hope this is too much, if it is just pick the ones you like the most. :3
Okay let me get mentally ready for this xD
Tumblr media
2. A song to sleep to?
Silence x'D no, but I am not a fan of falling asleep to a song tbh because I want to finish it and the fear of not hearing the whole song is scary OVO
I remember this one song I heard that had a very dreamy, sleepy vibe to it, let's see if I can find it :3
Goodnight Moon by Go Radio
youtube
4. A song that hypes you the fuck up
Do you know how hard is not to go for Cha Cha Cha rn x'D? Hmmm... what other songs hype me up 🤔Okay Hoita Mut and Gay (both by Benjamin) also does something for me x'D
Hoita Mut by Benjamin
youtube
GAY by Benjamin
youtube
9. A song that makes you want to go on an adventure?
Now we talked about the HTTYD soundtrack recently why not go for Test Drive x'D
youtube
12. A song to listen to whilst you lie in a meadow?
I think I got it: Nocturne by Secret Garden ... it is just so pretty and so cool that it is basically a 2 min violin solo sandwiched inbetween some pretty lyrics :'D (Also, it won Eurovision the year I was born x'D) but I Hear A Symphony is another good meadow energy song tbh :3
Nocturne by Secret Garden
youtube
I Hear A Symphony by Cody Fry
youtube
17. A song that makes you want to grab your friends jump up and down dancing and screaming the lyrics?
Oh boy then it need to be a song we both know x'D (not very likely with how my playlist looks like rn :'D) ... Oh, I believed I've done this specific thing to Toxic so I guess that one x'D
Toxic by Britney Spears
youtube
21. A song for when the sun has gone down and you are feeling absolutely buck-wild with exhilaration!
The whole scenario gives me vibes of Ethnic tecno weirdness from Eurovision so I'm sorry I have to go with my gut and say it is a three way street between Shum, Fulenn and Spirit in the Sky ... due to post limitations however I'll go with Keiino :'D
Spirit in the Sky by KEiiNO
youtube
23. A song that when you listen to it you’re transported to a liminal space, time is pointless and you must sit and wallow in the void that remains
Am I being too much up ESC's butt if I say my gut reaction was Tout l'univers :'D?
I think I might go with the Synthesis version of My Immortal instead tho :'D
My Immortal by Evanescence
youtube
