I look that leap of faith and thought, I could frantically free fall or I could learn to FLY!
What is it about uncertainty that most people find so frightening? Why is it so difficult to take that leap of faith and take action on those things that matter most!
Think about the amount of time that you invest in making sure that things are certain BEFORE you will act – the thinking, the planning, the procrastinating – just in case that waiting will help you to feel that much more certain – just in case that at some point in the future, circumstances will be PERFECT (and by this we usually mean a sure thing!).
The tragic, timewasting part of this strategy though is that things are never going to be absolutely PERFECT – sure there is a time where planning and preparation is appropriate – and THEN there is a time when we need to say good enough is good enough and to then take that LEAP OF FAITH! 
Yes things might not work out PERFECTLY but SO WHAT!? 
So why don’t we act?  Why does it feel SO risky? What is really going to happen if it doesn’t work out EXACTLY according to your plan?  What happens for you when it is not done perfectly or you perceive failure?
Most of the time the REAL risk is not in failure itself – rather it is what happens when you PERCEIVE that you have failed and this – for many people means the ACTIVATON of that dastardly INTERNAL CRITIC!  You might hear yourself say “see I told you that would fail” “I told you that you didn’t have it in you” “look at that effort, surely is should come easier that this if you were truly meant to do xyz!”
In this model of the world:
Mistakes are considered failure
Mistakes are personalised – you failed and this must mean something about you – you are a certain kind of person aka a – failure/ loser/ not good enough/ inadequate and heaven forbid NOT PERFECT!
Effort is considered failure – if you had the talent then it would come easily – you shouldn’t have to work hard!!
So why would you risk any new venture, branching out, or making yourself vulnerable in any way if your model of the world does not support you – you will be attacked, by YOU, if you don’t meet your own standards. Why would you risk it if there is going to be no SAFETY NET should you happen to need one?
You predict that you will end up on the ground in pieces, and if you are not supporting yourself INTERNALLY, then this is exactly what will happen emotionally for you.  Of course you will not want to risk this happening again!

And while this might be true – that risk of failure is no acute for many people, even knowing this does not translate into action!!
So how to change this?
Well this is a PROCESS – effectively re-learning a more supportive model of the world and building a more positive relationship with yourself.  One where
Mistakes are LEARNING – an ever evolving process of refining your actions towards what matters! OK, well don’t do THAT then, try this instead!!
Mistakes are NOT PERSONAL – mistakes, failure and imperfection is a part of the HUMAN experience – this applies to everyone – even you!! Everyone has had an experience (or 10) of feeling humiliated, embarrassed, not good enough, inadequate – feeling like they have failed – however it is the extent to which we STAY here and BELIEVE what we are saying that will determine, DIRECTLY, whether we can be resilient in the face of perceived failure or become increasingly fearful and reluctant to even TRY.
Effort is considered par for the course – no effort/ no reward.  Yes we might have been born with certain capacities, but UNLESS you put in the effort, then there will be no reward or success.  Even the most physically gifted and talented basketball player will never shoot a hoop if they do not practice!  This applies to everyone, yes you may have certain capacities and abilities – but UNLESS you put in the effort, then your capacities will not be actualised.
AND THEN
when you DO perceive failure
you choose KINDNESS and COMPASSION for how hard THAT is to experience!
No one WANTS to feel this way
NO ONE wants to feel this way, sure BUT if you want the most out of your life, and you want to be an engaged and growing member of your community and your LIFE, then it is inevitable. And how you treat yourself around this will make all the difference! 
So if it is hard and you continue to put in the effort, then GOOD – GO YOU! - you are learning, growing and INCREASING your capacity and moving in a direction that matters to you.
And if you are NOT, then you could begin to QUESTION your relationship with mistakes, failure and YOURSELF! 
You can begin to question your attempts to be perfect so as to avoid the onslaught of your own self-criticism.
You can begin to question, why NOT kindness at those times when we are most vulnerable!?

And I would add to this – successful people have a model of the world that supports them to do this – they are unprepared to stay and beat themselves up – they are capable of showing themselves support when things don’t work out, can they commit to learning from their mistakes and not make it about them – the don’t personalise the failure - and then they MOVE ON with all that new learning!
So go do it, journal it out if you need and want to – this would be recommended!
Get some clarity around it so you can begin to take meaningful action that is supported internally

We can't help But Respect and Admire those RoofTopping People - They have so much Confidence in their Skills that they Dared Death-Defying Feats on the Tallest Buildings they can get to. But of course, this is in NO way Encouraging You on such act to Test Your Fear as there are hundreds of such deaths a year. Everyone has Fear but Everyone also has Courage. and I said “I am a writer!”.  My soul jumped up, danced for joy and totally high fived itself, then responded “Welcome home, now let’s get to work!”
How is it for you?  What aspects of yourself are you not claiming to be yours or you?  What is YOUR sentence that seems too scary to state, to own, to reclaim? 
I AM A __________________
What is it for you?  What instantly came up when you said this to yourself.  If you glossed over it, that this is too scary to even CONTEMPLATE - go back and sit with it before you go on – what is your soul telling you?  What is that scream inside that, if you were to listen would be the fuller expression of you?
Or are you claiming it but being only half in, one foot out the door in case it doesn’t work, that you have a back-up plan to ‘fall back on’ in case you fail?  That it will be a mistake to be who you are or express yourself fully! That every step of the creative process is slow, tortured and a struggle as you really are fighting and resisting, yourself, what already is?
Where is it that we learn to not totally back ourselves: to follow our interests, be guided by our passions, to experiment and risk the mistakes or failure, to see them as all part of the learning process.  To make steady and unwavering progress towards our true calling – the full express of who we are and always were?! 
Where is it that we learn to sell ourselves out, take second best and to go after the ‘secure job’ or the ‘high salary’ or the ‘comfortable life’?  Go after what is safe, comfortable and expected!
Why is it that we assume that we can’t follow our passions as our life’s work? The message is conform, here is the formula, follow this and you will be financially secure, safe, comfortable. But I do ask you, if this is what you have assumed, how COMFORTABLE is it REALLY?  How comfortable is it to know that you have all of this inside you, and to NOT express it?  How comfortable will it be as the year’s progress, and you make no progress towards what really matters to you?
How comfortable will it be THEN?
While some discomfort towards the things that matter to you is quite likely and to be expected - as A PART of the PROCESS –the discomfort of NOT doing this – of not owning who you are– this discomfort is INEVITABLE and is the one that is only going to increase with each successive year.  The discomfort of not following your passions is only going to increase as you sit with the pain of lost potential, of not standing up and owning who you are!
So please go back and ask what it is that you have been ignoring and complete the statement
I AM A_______________
This is likely to be multi-faceted – we are complex creatures after all – but what are those things that speak to you most loudly?  What are those things that just scream to be stated and expressed?
We often don’t want to do this as we assume that in order to do this, then life will have to change massively and this is too scary!  But the reality is that this is also just mind chatter – there is no reason to assume that reclaiming your inner voice, listening to what it is saying, and acting on it will have to mean massive change RIGHT NOW – although of course in the long run, with repeated action, you will be unrecognisable to yourself over time! 
Just think of exercise – you work out once – you don’t need to run the marathon on the first day and this is probably not advisable!  However, if you were to keep at it and day after day, you were do the work, then over time the marathon becomes a possibility, an INEVITABILITY.  What started out with small steps invariably accumulates over time, and you WILL make a massive difference in your life.
We also don’t need to know HOW it will all come together, that is mostly not for us to know at the beginning, we just need to be prepared to listen and to take action – to take the first step, then the next step, then the next – AS EACH STEP PRESENTS ITSELF!  Just like the first explorers who were going into unchartered territory – as let’s face it, that IS what we are doing! – they did not concern themselves with knowing where they would ultimately end up as there was NO WAY to actually know this – they just did it anyway as they were fucking CURIOUS!
What has happened to our curiosity? Why is it that we think we have to KNOW before we even get started? Why is it that we think we need a sure thing to begin to take RISKS – well lets face it, that really is not a risk – and you will not be rewarded with all the goodness that life has to throw up unless you are actually prepared to take risks – to be prepared to be vulnerable and show up in your own life.
Now to repeat – these steps don’t need to be huge – they can be small steps that are available to you NOW – don’t let the mind chatter convince you that you need XYZ before you get started – no – you have what you need now to get started NOW even if it is on a small scale.  Small scale is TOTALLY acceptable and all it takes.
So ask yourself now: 
What is the SMALLEST thing that I can do TODAY so that I can get started?
What is the SMALLEST thing that I can do today that can help progress me towards my goals?
What is the SMALLEST thing that is available to me TODAY so that I can make some movement and progression towards the things that MATTER MOST to me?
Whatever those goals are – if your goal is just to feel BETTER – feel LESS ANXIOUS – then ask yourself what is the smallest thing that you can do today that will help you to progress.  It is so often the case that overcoming inertia is the BIGGEST and BEST thing that you can do for yourself, so WHATEVER it takes, no matter how small – do that. 
Notice any mind chatter that might come up for you that says that this is meaningless, what is the point, is that all you are going to do!?,  this won’t make a difference etc etc etc – blah blah blah – journal it OUT if you need to and this is recommended.  GET IT OUT – and then take action.
Remind yourself:
Remind yourself that it all ADDS UP - those small steps that are repeated will MOST DEFINITELY add up when you stick with it.
Remind yourself of the bigger picture – your reason why you would do this in the first place.
Remind yourself that you are so very likely to feel better after you have ACTED! You have listened and responded to that scream inside – and taken action on what matters most TO YOU!
Make sure that the steps that you are taking every day are the exact steps that you need to take in order to achieve the highest expression of YOU – not the preconceived IDEA of you or what is EXPECTED of you – but the you that you see and hear when you tune in.
The you that says YES I AM A_______________!.  It is then that you can begin to take MEANINGFUL steps towards this ultimate expression of you: small daily steps, which accumulate over time to make massive changes in the long run.
So go do it for your family, your community, your people – whoever they might be but mostly do it for YOURSELF!
Remember, Bodhi starts with YOU!
