I have decided to post about my fantrolls. Here they are again for reference.
Tumblr media
This post will be about their names. No one has asked but maybe by getting to know these guys you will come up with questions, which is ideal.
Parima Mydaer is the first one I named. I got "Parima" from "prima", like "prima ballerina" because she dances. "Mydaer" is a spelling corruption of "midair", because she's also an acrobat. I pronounce her name "par-EE-ma mai-DARE".
Vaisak's name came next, I was in an astronomy class and experiencing that thing where like I can pay attention but I do also want to connect everything to my special interests, for fun. I saw "Aldebaran", a star in Taurus, and was like "hee hoo troll names". Actually both her names are otherwise-unchanged truncations of names. Vaisakha Aldebaran. Vaisakha being one of the lunar months in the Hindu calendar. (Go look at the solar ones, it's pretty fun from a Homestuck's perspective. Like, oh you're lining them up with correlated zodiac signs? Oh I wonder which sign Mithuna ha--it's gemini.) Anyway. I pronounce her name "VAI-sak ALL-de-ba".
Veelah Oscura is pretty easy to explain. After the Aldebaran thing I just started cruising Wikipedia for astronomy things I could name my OCs after. Being a seadweller I wanted something water related for her and I picked the constellation Vela, the sails. And she's a void player, so her last name means dark. Water dark. Coincidentally, that would be her typing if she were a Pokémon. I'm sure there's no ambiguity that her name is pronounced "VEE-la oh-SCU-ra".
There is, however, a bit of freedom in Zefire's name. It's just a spelling corruption of the word "zephyr", referencing her aspect. I pronounce it "ZEF-eer", but you could say "ze-fire" like fire or "zephyr" ("zeffer") or maybe even "ZEF-ur-ee" if you really wanted? And Kaetos comes from Cetus. That's probably not her denizen, but it is a whale constellation, and, again. Seadweller. So, "ZEF-eer KAY-tose". Or ze-FIRE, or ZEF-ur, or ZEF-ur-ee if you're strange.
Finally this takes us to Atlasp. His name is easy to explain too. You see, their designs came before their names, and I wanted his eyes to be orange and blue as a reference to Portal, one of my other hyperfixations from before I got into Homestuck. (Actually, it was some fellow Portal fans that convinced me to read HS.) So, "Atlasp" comes from Atlas and P-body, the co-op robots from Portal 2. Nothing deeper than that. Just a silly videos games reference. Then Kiiaro is a spelling corruption of "chiaro", Italian for light. Referencing his aspect. Together with Veelah's last name, "chiaro oscura", light and dark, or "chiaroscuro" which refers to strong light and shadow in painting. These guys' names owe a lot to my college education, I learned about chiaroscuro in art history class.
That's it. The hypothetical sixth character has no name yet. If he gets to exist he will be a boy, a rust blood, and a Derse dreamer, and I have a typing quirk picked out for him. But his appearance, name, classpect, trolltag, and role have yet to be determined.

Hello! Can I get MCU, The Hobbit, and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. ship? 💚
Appearance: She/her. 179,5cm tall, rectangle body shape. Fair skin complexion with quite a few birthmarks. Dyed brown with honey-red highlights, shoulder-length, straight hair with bangs. The left eye is a mix of two colors – a smaller portion of (darker) greyish-blue and a larger portion of hazel; while the right eye is just a (lighter) greyish-blue. Heptagon face shape with two dimples on the left cheek and one on the right cheek (only visible while smiling). A gap between the upper front teeth.
Personality (good and bad traits): Ever since I was a kid, I was always quite mature for my age – I identify myself as an old soul. I come off as polite and well-mannered to strangers, yet I tend to keep it to myself by being reserved. But, that’s because I have social anxiety and I’m nervous and shy when meeting/talking to people. The only people I’m comfortable with being with my inner circle – closest friends and family. I am usually more “open” with my friends than with my family. With my friends I can be my “truest-self” – I smile more, I laugh more, I feel more accepted and understood. I am the mom and the fashionista of the group. Don’t get me wrong, I am fiercely protective of my family, especially of my mother and younger sister. But, lately, I’ve been feeling like the “black sheep of the family, Cinderella who’s been taken advantage of. I express my affection for the people I care about in little, but practical, ways. I can be a little stiff when it comes to open, gushy displays of affection. Others turn to me for help and advice. I’m kind-hearted and generous, always ready to help a person in need. Always have been motherly towards children. Very awkward at keeping small talk (usually with people that I’m not that close with). Absolutely, hate speaking in front of a public, and if I do, because of my nervousness, I tend to mess up my words and/or I practice whatever I’m about to say in my head at first. I appreciate the simplicity and am often most comfortable when I’m not getting too much attention from the world. I am sensitive – both to criticism and to others’ feelings (I sponge up the feelings and moods of people and the environment around me). Have a hard time saying no or expressing my true thoughts, feelings. I get influenced by other people’s opinions/thoughts quite hard (I take everything to the heart), that is why I tend to keep a lot to myself (may come off as a little bit tense, secretive, mysterious). I avoid the harsh reality by daydreaming (almost every day) – imagining myself in situations far from my current circumstances. Sort of like a self-escape. I worry a lot and overthink almost everything. I am easily distracted and my attention span can be quite short. I have an internal struggle between my needs and wants. I can lack focus and be indecisive as a result – when I decide on one route, I am pulled in another direction at the same time (“But what if…”, “on the other hand...”). That is why I’m having a bit of a struggle with deciding what I want to do in the future (career-wise). I am easily overwhelmed by pressure and stress. There is a self-destructive side to me (self-critical, lack of self-confidence) that I’m working on by confronting my fears (coming out of my shell). Don’t like taking pictures, or other people taking pictures of me. I feel most content when I’ve straightened out all the details of everyday life. I have a routine, that I follow by mostly every day, and if something small changes in that routine, I start to have a small internal anxiety attack. Also, I like to do things my own way, like, when it comes to cleaning the house or organizing stuff, etc. I get triggered even if people don’t do the laundry the way I do. I guess you could describe me as a perfectionist, clean/control freak. In triggering situations I can be impulsive, spontaneous, quick to act. Quick flare-ups of anger/annoyance when being provoked on my patience. Even when I’m feeling low, I manage to find humor in life and have fun with whatever I do have. Although I tend to bottle things up, I am an emotional person and my emotions are genuine – I love and care deeply and passionately and wish no ill will upon anyone, yet it hards for me to imagine someone falling in love with me or just liking me.
Hobbies, likes: My hobbies are cleaning, writing (re-writing song lyrics, making small notes, writing stories), listening to any type of music, catching up on my favorite films and TV shows, hanging out with friends, going to the cinema, or the club, being out in nature, reading, traveling. I like history, cooking, fashion magazines (or fashion in general), road trips, spirituality, mythology, books, orange juice, previous decades, cottage-core, dark academia.
Overall: Hufflepuff. INFP-T. Bi-sexual. Pisces-Aries cusp sign. “Looks like could kill you, but is actually a cinnamon roll.” A feminist, support LGBTQ+ community. That’s it, thank you!
hey @pataim ! thanks so much for sending in your request, and thank you so much for your honesty about yourself. like it takes a lot to air yourself out like that, and I admire your strength for it. but also fINALLY a 'Man from U.N.C.L.E' ship! I love that movie and attempt Illya's accent all the time, so this will be fun :)
For the MCU/Marvel - I ship you with Steve Rogers/Captain America !
no one can tell me that Steve doesn’t have a set routine honestly, so let me just get that out there
he seems intimidating at first, esp as a public figure and Avenger, but Steve is nothing but passionate about what he does. so it may clash w your lack of direction, but I could honestly see him envying that a lil bit, like it’s not that you don’t have direction, it’s the fact that you still have a choice in the matter.
your love of history put you in a museum, here you bumped into Steve in a horrible disguise. he struck up the conversation first, and once you got past the whole “holy crap that’s Captain America”, you could actually engage with him in the material and boi was he smitten
he would love to join you when your rewatched your fave things, bc not only is he catching up on more media he missed out on, he’s also getting to know your interests in a way that’s comfortable with you. it avoids all the small talk, but leaves room for discussion after the film/show !
since you tend to sponge up a lot of what other people believe, it’s totally Steve who actually tries to question what you think and what you feel about things. he’s someone who encourages you to have your own opinions and to stay true to those thoughts. so while with him, you can rely on him to learn about yourself, you also gain skills for independence
overall, Steve is super patient, and despite his chaotic job as Cap, he takes comfort in his routine, and would find comfort incorporating a partner’s routine into his life. and as you grow in a relationship with him, he’s patient about teaching you how to be your own person, and helping you learn more about yourself. and while it’s uncomfortable, you grow stronger throughout being with him :)
For The Hobbit - I ship you with Bilbo Baggins !
Bilbo is the definition of introvert, and you're right there with him
not that introversion is ever a bad thing, bc it isn't. but Bilbo is quite content to sit in his little hobbit hole and vibe. like Gandalf had to come find him, ya know. dude disappeared from his own bday.
but anyways. it's not that Bilbo lacks purpose, it's just that he's more content with a quieter life. and it seems like his quiet life would balance you out well! like the Shire is so so chill, and there doesn't really seem to be a lot of pressure on the hobbits to pick a profession. like they just genuinely do what needs to get done.
similarly, Bilbo is the type who seems a little bothered by mushy displays of affection. exhibit a: disappearing from his own bday. like he's much more the type to refill your tea when y'all are reading by the fireplace, which he would totally do w you
it will probs take you a little while to warm up to each, given just how introverted you both are. but when he explains that he has set ways of doing things, then if they're compatible w your ways of doing things, then it doesn't take you long to open up to him
like it'll be a little jarring, but he takes comfort in his routines too. and it'll be an event trying to incorporate both of your ways of life together, but he's willing to do it
overall, yours is a very quaint partnership, built on deep respect for one another. neither of you are going to push the other to do things you aren't into. and y'all just live your best lives together tbh :)
For The Man From U.N.C.L.E - I ship you with Illya Kuryakin !
I love my big Russian spy so much, so this is fun for me
so Illya is the epitome of reserved and generally quiet, so it might take a while to really break down his walls and talk to him. and he's not quite sure what to do with you once you join the team
but, he's playing his game of chess alone, and when you sit down and ask to play with him, he opens up a little more after that
if you're one who get sent out on mission with the team, get ready, bc sometimes those missions require a lot of improvising. but you'd probably be at whatever 'base' was, helping run operations from a more secure place. but Illya and Napoleon improvise a lot, leading to a lot of headaches for you and Waverly
Illya has small bursts of anger, but similar to Gaby, most times, you can intervene and he doesn't get violent. or when he does, he tries to make sure it isn't in front of you. but bc you care so deeply for him, you're there for him in the aftermath. and that's how you show your love for him.
by patching him up if he gets cut, by talking him down when he's angry. and just generally trying to take care of him. and he totally does the same for you, especially if you get sent out into the field
and much to Illya's dismay, Solo doesn't refrain form making jokes about you. but if you can take them in stride, then Solo welcomes you into the team just as well :)

Coward | Hol Horse X Reader
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Don’t get me wrong I like Hol horse. I suppose one could argue he’s playing it smart. ¯\_( ◉ 3 ◉ )_/¯
Italics in quotations are thoughts = ‘Example’
Italics without are flashbacks = Example
Tumblr media
(Look at this ass-hat run)
Coward
The rugged, blonde male watched the (e/c) eyed woman with his piercing blue eyes, his sight trained on her lonesome figure as she stared out of the open window, the look on her face indicating she was lost in deep thought.
"Thinkin' again I see," he said aloud, the sound of his voice making her jump, startled.
Her stand appeared, manifesting from behind her and ready to pounce on the intruder, however, she couldn't see anyone in the darkness, not knowing where to take aim.
Nonetheless, she prepared herself, ready to take action,
"Who are you?" She said with a caught breath, immediately stepping back, her heart racing as only one person came to mind, the probability making her blood freeze, every square centimeter of her being raked with cold chills at the recollection of the man.
Her hands fisted tightly as she was ready to battle with not only her stand, but her fists as well, not intent on being put down without a fight.
'DIO...he couldn't have come ..no…' she argued with herself, trying to calm her harsh breathing, but even then she remained on edge.
"Don’t tell me you already forgot about me," The blonde man said while stepping forward, the light hitting his grinning face as he revealed himself to her.
"Hol horse?" She said with risen brows, her eyes growing wide as she realized who it was, “What are you doing here?” she questioned him, demanding an answer, her tone sharp and tart.
Perhaps at one point, they had been friends, having each other’s backs as an unsaid mutual agreement, but that was what felt like a lifetime ago, going far back in a time she’d rather forget.
‘I shouldn't let my guard down,’ She reminded herself, though, in truth, she wanted nothing more than to sit down with him to simply laugh and talk.
Or simply, waste away the day with nonsense banter like they’d come accustomed to.
“ What?” he asked her with a nonchalant shrug, “ Can’t A guy drop by to see A-”
“Cut the crap!” she barked at him, “Did he send you here?” she asked him, her heart tightening.
“Are you here because he ordered you?” she added with the same viciousness.
And just like that tension filled the air, and his smile dropped in its entirety.
‘ DIO sent him,’ She told herself, reasoning that it had to be the only possible excuse for him to show up around her ever again.
‘But why?’ she wondered, swallowing down hard as her heart clenched,
‘Could it be?’ She went on, having assumed that he’d sent the man to do his bidding and cut of loose ends.
‘Could it be he sent Hol horse here to kill me?’ She bit her tongue trying to swallow down the large lump caught in her throat,
‘ Hol Horse...
Would you really?’
“Yeah, he did, ” He answered somberly. “But it’s not what you think,” he started, lifting his hands up to show her he wasn’t armed, or intent on using Emperor.
“Then what is it?” she asked him, uncertain. “Why did he send you?” she added, (e/c) colored eyes begging him for the truth. Withdrawing her stand she showed him the same middle ground, however,  still being cautious enough to stay at a safe distance.
"You know just what he wants," he said to her, his voice low and gruff. “ He says you’re welcome to come back. He says he’s willing to forgive you,” he added.“ But only if you come back now, And of course beg.”
Momentarily, he looked away, his eyes locking onto the window, "I'm just here to pass you that message," he told her, his eyes set on the outside world, coming up to gaze at the illuminated moon.
‘Though that’s not all I came here for,’ He thought to himself, keeping quiet instead, swallowing down the bitter taste of loser spit in his mouth.
“It's awfully pretty tonight," he said instead, the uttered words sounding painfully soft. "The moon...it's all big and shining," he told her, having missed the nights they lay together, staring up at the star peppered sky.
Her brows then creased up at his sudden statement, uncertain to where the conversation would lead.
“What? You’re not going to try and convince me?” (f/n) said softly, a snort drawing out of her as she eyed him.
He drew towards her, coming close to the window where she still stood, and throughout the entire time, his hand itched to fall over hers and pulling her along  everywhere he went.
‘ I’d give anything to be together again.
As friends.
As partners.
As lovers.
Anything that would have us together against the world, against everything else that threatened to come between us, ’
He pulled up a rather lukewarm smile, eyeing her currently concerned expression,
“Why would I?” He questioned her." You’re so happy now,” he mused, “it's plainly obvious.” He told her, having watched her beforehand, his eyes dazed as he watched her features lift with happiness too many times to count.
It wasn’t like the last time they were together...
‘I thought I’d never see that beautiful grin,’
......................................................................
“You've got to choose the winning side,” he advised, circling her, “ If you want to stay alive that is,” he added.
“ These guys are as good as dead, and your only following in suit,” he said while glaring at her.
There was a rough edge to his tone that meant business, completely devoid of the playful mood he typically addressed her with,
but he couldn't help it,
‘It’s suicide,’ He told himself as he narrowed his eyes towards her.
At his booming voice she felt her body shake, but rather than fear, she felt anger bubble within her,
“Your wrong,” she fought back, “Your wrong in your way of thinking!” She retorted, stepping forward to him as though challenging him.
“Really?” he said lowly, sucking in a steady breath as he stared her down,
“Just know he'll come get you himself,” he informed her with a sneer.
The sudden statement then made her eyes grow wide, the certainty in them was shaken for just a moment.
“You can fight him all you want, and you can cuddle up to any one of these guys if you want to...
It'll just make it all the more painful when he tears them up,” he told her, “ One by one…” he added, knowing it’d be gruesome.
He could see the effects of his harsh words on her, but he couldn't hold back, filled with rage at the fact that she’d just switched sides, convinced by none other than the silver-haired Frenchman and his stupid talk of honor.
......................................................................
He wanted to touch her, grab her by the waist and pull her towards him tightly, protect her from anyone and anything that would harm her,
but he couldn't fight for her.
He couldn't save her, not when he couldn't even save himself.
Instead, he could only draw back.
“I didn’t come for anything else but that,” he muttered, stepping back, falling into the darkness of the room and away from the shining moonlight which touched the (h/c) haired woman so perfectly.
‘ That's my number one…
My partner …
The only damn woman in the world that could have made me kneel down on one leg.’
"(F/N) " he said with a soft exhale, looking back at her once more, all with a painfully obvious look of heartache she couldn’t see.
- And he thought it better that way.
' If I weren't such a coward…' he thought with gritted teeth, knowing that if he weren't the rat he was now, he'd live the last of his days trailing behind her.
......................................................................
"I don’t care! Don’t you get that's not the life I want !" she told him. There was a hardness to her (e/c) eyes he noticed wasn't there before, and it stunned him,
" I'm sick of being afraid…" she added, "I'm sick of being controlled," she went on with more resolve.
“And you should be too!” She argued.
“Afraid?” he asked with a chuckle, “ Baby, I'm here for the cash and nothing more. It's win-win for me, and whatever it takes I'll make sure I come on top.” He told her, making her face contort into a look of disappointment, and overall utter disenchantment.
He knew he sounded like an ass, but it was all he could do to hide the fact that his heart was breaking, knowing he couldn't do anything to save her.
He couldn’t convince her to come back to his side.
And he couldn't test his luck with their boss either.
......................................................................
He’d delivered his message, just as he’d been instructed, and he wasn't going to try and convince her. He knew it was fruitless, but the only reason he searched for her was to see her again, to hear her and have her close, even if he couldn’t touch her.
- There was nothing more to it.
Even if she was still disgusted with him, and despite the hate she’d have for him, he couldn’t stop thinking of her, nor loving her.
All in all, he couldn’t help but want another moment with her.
“ Go on and be happy,”  he said with the truest good intent weaved through the words,
‘ Smile…
Laugh some more…The way only you can...
Get all the happiness in the world before he puts an end to you.’
“Next time we see each other,” He started, swallowing down harshly, “ I won’t pull any shots, and I hope you don’t pull your punches.” He warned her, hoping it wouldn’t come to it, because it was the last thing he wanted.
Nodding with understanding, she swallowed down her heartache, wiping her tears away,
‘If you did love me, you’d fight for me...
If you cared about me...Then you wouldn't turn your back...
Hol Horse, if you weren't such a coward, I could tell you that I love you, still.
- So much, I was willing to fight for you.’

If its not too much trouble, could I ask for the monster AU with the sdr2 guys? I love monsters and I love the monster AU you did for v3
Howdy, Anon! I hope you don’t mind, but Mod Kokichi and I tend to get very excited with our Monster AU so we ended up having to split these into three parts this time thanks to the inclusion of Izuru. Now that my short explanation is out of the way, I hope that you’ll enjoy part one, and thanks so much for enjoying our V3 Monster AU. I plan to post the next parts tomorrow if possible so I hope that you’ll look forward to them.
Tumblr media
Part 1 (Part 2 here) (Part 3 here)
Twogami (shapeshifter)
You were on an evening stroll through the neighborhood when it happened.
With nothing but the marmalade light slowly fading in the distance and sound of birds chirping in the distance to keep you company.
That serenity seemed like it would last for ages that is until an inhuman screech pierced your ears.
Within an instant, you lost that peaceful moment and in another you're legs were carrying you towards that sound before you could think to do otherwise.
Now out of breath and confused by your own lack of forethought you ended up laying your eyes on a strange shadowy figure with a nasty bite wound on its leg.
It didn't seem dangerous or that it would attack you though as it lay there with sad eyes looking at you. If anything, you felt bad for the guy so you took him home with you carrying the shadowy form, feeling it's warm and weirdly fuzzy form.
Soon enough you were home though with your new "friend" in tow. Now was the time to get him some medical attention though.
You quickly grabbed some supplies and got to work. Then by the time you were done, you sent him off on his way.
It was at least a week ago since your encounter but you still wondered at times how he or it was doing. It was hard to tell really if a shapeshifter had a gender in its truest form but even then there was no use worrying about it.
Today you had to focus. There was a charity ball being held by none other than the Togami family and as your family was the one that catered the event and you being the only one with free time, you were sent to act as a representative.
Pushing open the doors you take a deep breath as you enter immediately noticing the Byakuya Togami going absolutely ham on the food your family provided.
You wouldn't have guessed he was such a big eater but even then you shouldn't stare probably. You take your eyes off of him rather embarrassed by your own lack of manners when he called out to you.
"You're S/o are you not? I must thank you and your family for most humbly procuring all this food for us. It's sure to make our event a great one."
His eyes seemed to be looking you over rather analytically yet his words were gentle as he continued.
"I know you're not accustomed to dances such as this with your status most likely but I was hoping that you would join me for the first dance tonight."
Wait, he was asking you!? Despite any protests you gave he admonished you with equal amounts of passion, insisting that he, the Byakuya Togami, the Ultimate Affluent Progeny was to dance with you and there was no convincing him otherwise.
What you didn't expect was to even be close enough to Byakuya to interact with him but by the end of the night, you were both already planning on going out together again.
It had been like some fairy tale meeting, the way you two met was special and the relationship that quickly bloomed between you two was just as much.
That's why as months went by you decided you wanted to take things further. You ended up buying yourselves matching rings, they weren't similar to wedding rings but they were their own unspoken promise that you two were each other.
You were excited to propose the idea to him as he arrived for another one of your rendezvous but at the sight of the ring, he seemed nervous.
"Of course...I-I'd love to accept, it's nothing...just hand it over."
Despite his unnatural and obviously suspicious reaction you carefully drop the ring into his larger hand only to see him become a familiar shadowy figure before your very eyes. The rings, the gold in them must have turned him into his true form!
"I'm sorry....I'm not the real Byakuya Togami, S/o." he speaks up before you can react looking at you sadly as he admits. "I just wanted to be someone you could like and everyone seemed to like that Togami fellow so I tricked you. I know that it's unforgivable though, for me to think that we could continue like that forever so, I'll leave if that's what you please."
He seemed so genuine and yet it was hard to formulate a response. What he did was wrong, you knew it but he meant so well and you couldn't turn him away then.
Telling him to wait, Togami or Twogami turns to you perplexed by your response. Confused or not though, you reached down to pick up his smaller, plump, shadowy body.
"S/o I...thank you."
Teruteru (Incubus)
When Teruteru applied to join you in the kitchen at your family dinner you didn't think anything much of him at first.
Sometimes he'd make perverted passes at you or tease a bit but overall he was kind and a reliable coworker. You both would spend many days and nights in that kitchen just chatting as you cooked and cleaned after a hard day of work.
However, as you both continued to close your shop together you couldn't help but find him alluring in some way.
Alluring and yet there was something odd about him. Teruteru always seemed to have some new girlfriend or boyfriend to spend time with after work whenever you tried to invite him out.
Maybe his flirting meant nothing after all but even then it felt so real that trying to convince yourself it wasn't was even more painful.
You were tempted, his flirtations were sweet as honey but what if you'd regret indulging in your own sweet temptations. He could be some player or heartbreaker for all you know after all.
Pushing those thoughts to the back of your head though you decided you had enough of being lead on by the fellow chef.
You waited until it was just you two and the remains of your labor left in the kitchen.
Per usual, he started with his usual small talk when you hushed him up with all the questions that tormented you day and night. Did he like you, did he hate you, was he messing with you, and most of all why? If it wasn't anything then why, why bother!?
He was shocked to say the less and thrown off guard for sure as he leaned onto a counter covered by flour in a moment of clumsiness to steel himself.
"I...I do have a reason for my flirtin' n' all but I just...yah need to promise y'all won't fire me if I spill the beans!"
Huh? So first he admits to lying something but then what's with the sudden accent too!? As much as you wanted to laugh at his nervous mistake of coating most of his sleeves in flour, you decided to urge him to go on.
"Well, I do like yah a whole lot but...but I'm also a...I'm an Incubus." He admits, showing off his normally hidden demonic form as though to emphasize his point.
"I want to be with yah really, but I don't wanna take anythin' from yah because of these dang powers a mine."
Sucking in a shaky breath you make your way towards him, disregarding his warnings against getting close and pulling his short frame to your own. You didn't care if he was an Incubus, even if you couldn't have his body you wanted his heart far more and would do anything for it.
"Oh S/o, how could'ja take in a guy like me?"
Nekomaru (Stone Golem)
You were taking a hike on a trail through the mountains. Your plans were to make it to the top in order to look out at the beautiful scenery before your eyes but those plans surely changed when you noticed a weird statue standing at your goal point.
It wasn't too odd for a statue to be somewhere like a mountain top your supposed but something about it made you feel unnerved.
Maybe it was because of how the statue looked as though it were mid-scream or maybe because of how eerily alive it felt. However, around you, it didn't move what so ever, the only other point of interest now the large piece missing from the side of the statue.
At this point, it felt a bit awkward being up there with this thing silently screaming at you forever so you decided to focus on searching for the piece you noticed missing and sure enough it wasn't far.
Picking it up in your hands wasn't too difficult despite the obvious weight to it and with trembling hands, you were easily able to place it in it's allotted slot.
That was when that silent scream of his turned into a roar, loud enough for you to feel it shake you as his large arms came to wrap around you, pulling you into an embrace.
"GAHAHAHA! I'M FREEEEEE!" he yells out, once loud enough for anyone nearby to hear him a second time.
Now setting you down he smiles at you, finally addressing you this time. "Thanks for saving me, I knew someone would have to find me eventually!"
He gives another hearty laugh at your own confused expression, not even bothering to give you time to process what's going on as he speaks up once again.
"I guess that means that I owe you now but don't you worry. I always pay back my debts," he scratches around his nose, adding, "Though all I can offer is to protect you from now on. Tell you what, I'll be like your bodyguard even!"
Despite you opening your mouth he only continues to go on, taking this proposition far more seriously than you thought he would.
"With me around NO ONE will touch you for I am NEKOMARU NIDAI!" he cheers, picking you up again despite your protests.
"No way am I letting you walk! It's my job to protect you so just tell me which way to go!"
Despite his kindness, he really was far too insistent, but even then you could tell you weren't getting out of this so you relented, eventually arriving home in his arms.
It's been about a month since that day that Nekomaru came to live with you. With the two of you growing closer each day it wasn't surprising for you to have developed feelings for the kind golem, but you did worry about what would happen when you'd confess.
Would he leave if he didn't feel the same? Despite your fears, you wanted to face him and to lay all of your feelings bare for him to see.
You two were planning to revisit the path that you met at and so you planned to then, bursting into your confession as soon as you arrived.
You hadn't meant to be so hasty but with Nekomaru it's hard not to be, you wanted to just rip the bandage off and be over with. You were prepared for the consequences of your actions but you didn't suffer at all like you might've guessed.
No, the only suffering you were enduring was from the lack of air when Nekomaru wrapped his arms around you again just like he did when you met.
"I was wondering when you'd say it! I love you too, S/o!"
Wait he knew? As soon as you questioned him though all he did was laugh as usual.
"GAHAHAHA! I thought you knew I did too already. I mean we lived together after all!"
What!?

Sanditon: The Sense & Sensibility Connection
@fortunatelylori and I first started talking way back during the incredibly long wait for the final season of Game of Thrones, when we were still sweet summer children and far less bitter than we are today. After GOT broke our hearts clean in two, we decided we needed to find a new shared obsession. We made our way through a few shows – some of them great (Narcos) and some of them just okay (The Discovery of Witches) – until one day a very attractive, very wet and very naked Theo James appeared on my dash. I sent @fortunatelylori the GIF set with the question, “so when did Theo James get this hot?” and she made the very smart decision that Sanditon would be our next watch.
Expecting a fun, easy, paint-by-numbers Jane Austen adaption, we were both incredibly surprised to find that not only is Sanditon grittier than other period dramas, but it also has fascinating and complex characters, interesting writing choices and is overall, a show that we both genuinely really love. It also happens to be a show that we both have a lot to say about.
If you’ve read @fortunatelylori‘s metas before, then you know you’re in for a treat. If you haven’t, prepare yourself for just how disgustingly good she is at analysing and understanding TV – she’s our fandom’s Meta Queen after all. We’ve been wanting to do a meta collab for quite a while now and it turns out a naked Theo James ended up providing the perfect opportunity. Who knew?
So, with that in mind, here is our first attempt at a meta collab. Which is really just a condensed version of our conversations – minus the swearing, animal pics and Theo James’ bare arse.
* * *
It’s no surprise to anyone, at this point, that Andrew Davies wears his Austen influences on his sleeve in Sanditon. You can find easter eggs for most of Austen’s work, from the famous Pride and Prejudice to the obscure Lady Susan.
However, Sense and Sensibility seems to be one work that hasn’t insipired much comparison from the fandom. And it’s perhaps for that reason that Sandion’s last two episodes were so hard to digest and why so many question marks were raised in regards to Charlotte’s characterization.
In this project we aim to dispel some of that confusion and attempt to put into prespective the character arcs of both Sidney and Charlotte in:
Sidlotte: A parallel journey between Sense and Sensibility by @fortunatelylori
As well as delve deeper into Charlotte’s POV through out the season finale in:
Charlotte Heywood: From Sensibility to Sense by @and-holly-goes-lightly
Charlotte Heywood: From Sensibility to Sense
Tumblr media
It is easy to dismiss Charlotte Heywood as simply another stereotypical plucky period drama heroine. At first glance, Charlotte appears to be cut from the same cloth as other Austen protagonists Elizabeth Bennett and Emma Woodhouse – strong willed, outspoken, inquisitive and incredibly charming. While Charlotte certainly does exhibit a number of personality traits borrowed from other Austen protagonists – this is Andrew Davies love letter to Austen after all – it would be a mistake to think that Charlotte isn’t a complex and interesting character all of her own. Charlotte’s character development may be far more understated than Sidney’s and not as all-encompassing as Esther’s, but her coming-of-age story is vital in driving the narrative and laying the ground work for S2 (if and when that happens).
I have spoken previously about the beginning of Charlotte’s character development here, as 1x07 presented a noticeable change in Charlotte’s behaviour. Charlotte began the series as a true romantic who wore her heart on her sleeve and had total confidence in her judgement and beliefs – overall, she tended to err more on the side of sensibility than sense. However, by the beginning of 1x07, Charlotte is noticeably reticent and emotionally guarded, struck by the knowledge that she is both in love with Sidney and that her once unguarded heart is now very much at risk. Despite Sidney’s declaration of love at the end of the episode (“I believe I am my best self, my truest self, when I’m with you”), 1x08 opens with an introspective Charlotte. When discussing Sidney with Georgiana, Charlotte appears blissfully in love, but noticeably anxious about what Sidney’s declaration means.
Charlotte - “We spoke after the regatta and he said he felt his truest self when he was with me.”
Georgiana - “Why would he say that?”
Charlotte - “I’ve been asking myself the same question. I couldn’t sleep last night for thinking on it.”
By the time the credits roll on the season finale, Charlotte’s character development is very much underway, with 1x08 setting the framework for exploring a Charlotte no longer ruled by sensibility, but by sense (Davies, there better be a S2 or so help me God *shakes fist at sky*).
However, before I discuss just how Charlotte’s character development plays out in 1x08, let’s go back to the beginning of the series and Charlotte’s arrival in Sanditon. I’ve talked quite a bit about Sidney’s instant attraction to Charlotte and how his feelings for her influence their interactions (for better or worse), but I’ve yet to explore the beginnings of Charlotte’s feelings for Sidney and how those feelings tie into Charlotte’s character growth. While Sidney and Charlotte’s first meeting in 1x01 is defined by just how badly it went (“new maid?”), this isn’t Charlotte’s first introduction to Sidney. Charlotte is first introduced to Sidney – well, a poor artistic rendering of him at least – upon her arrival at Trafalgar House. Taking in Tom’s truly ostentatious design choices, Charlotte stops in front of a large portrait of Sidney, which takes pride of place in the Parker’s entryway. It is apparent that Charlotte’s curiosity is immediately piqued by the rather imposing work, curiosity that is further increased by Tom’s unhelpful description of his enigmatic younger brother.
“He’s a man of affairs, a man of business – importing, exporting – he’s here, there and everywhere.”
Charlotte is as instantly attracted to Sidney as Sidney is to her upon their first meeting on the clifftops. However, while Sidney’s attraction to Charlotte is driven by her honesty, implicit kindness and strength of character, Charlotte’s initial curiosity and attraction to Sidney lays with his status an outlier and her inability to understand his intentions (as well as the fact that he is, without question, a total babe). As @fortunatelylori points out, Charlotte thrives on honesty (and sometimes just the appearance of honesty), and is immediately cautious of those who, like Sidney, keep their cards close to their chest. Despite catching glimpses of Sidney at his best and truest self, in attempting to understand his motivations, Charlotte often misconstrues his emotional disconnect as dishonesty. She cannot reconcile the loyal, kind and charming man she is attracted to with the prejudiced, withholding and taciturn man she assumes his behaviour indicates. When Charlotte’s father warned her that people in Sanditon may not be as they appear, Charlotte was on the lookout for a wolf in sheep’s clothing (notice her changing opinion on Edward and Clara, for example). She had not accounted for the opposite – that Sidney’s brusqueness was well crafted armour developed as a result of trauma.
Following Georgiana’s kidnap and eventual rescue in London, Charlotte wrestles with the knowledge that her tendency towards sensibility and her belief that emotional vulnerability equals honesty, has blinded her to Otis’ true nature and has caused her to make inaccurate assumptions about Sidney’s motivations.
“I hardly know what to think anymore… about anything. I’ve always felt so certain of my judgement and now I see I’ve been blinded by sentiment and naivety. I’ve got it all so wrong. No wonder your brother has such a poor opinion of me.”
By the time Sidney asks her to dance at the masquerade ball in London at the end of 1x06, Charlotte’s whole world has undergone a seismic shift. Her experience with Sidney and Otis has shown that she must recalibrate her world view. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is an overwhelming undertaking. Charlotte’s past confidence in her judgement stems from her usually good ability to read people – her biggest mistake was not misunderstanding Sidney and Otis’ motivations, but not accounting for how trauma can shape someone’s world view (in fairness, this is not something Charlotte could understand until she experienced it herself) and assuming everyone, like her, comes from a place of good intentions. These are valuable, but hard lessons to learn and unfortunately for Charlotte, these lessons are quickly followed by the realisation that she is in love with Sidney, as well as Eliza’s sudden reappearance. Taking all this into account, it’s easy to see why Charlotte spends 1x07 introspective and emotionally guarded.
Tumblr media
Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Davies’ chooses to open 1x08 with multiple shots of Charlotte walking alone along the beach deep in thought. Not only has Charlotte wrestled with her feelings for Sidney, but she spent the previous day (1x07) convinced that Sidney did not return her feelings due to the apparent reestablishment of his relationship with Eliza, as well as feeling as though she has been found lacking in comparison to the elegant, cultured and incredibly wealthy other woman. I know many people have attributed Charlotte’s noticeable reservation in 1x08 as passivity in the face of her developing relationship with Sidney. However, I don’t believe that is the case, merely that at this point in Charlotte’s character development she has made the terrifying realisation that giving power over your heart to someone you love leaves you incredibly vulnerable to heartache. After all, Sidney’s abandonment of Charlotte for Eliza at the masquerade ball at the end of 1x06, gave her a small lesson in just how painful love can be. As a result, the Charlotte that meets Sidney’s eyes across Sanditon’s completed streets at the beginning of 1x08, is one of sense over sensibility – hopeful in her love for Sidney and anxiously waiting for the other shoe to drop.
This is reinforced by her scene with Georgiana prior to the midsummer ball. Strip away the regency set design and costuming, and this scene could be easily transplanted to any modern romantic comedy – our young heroine confiding in her friend about her developing love for the male hero. Sounds familiar, right?
“You judge Sidney too harshly. Consider the kindness he has shown Otis. I believe he has a tenderness that few people get to see.”
Unfortunately for Charlotte, her friend is too distracted by her own romantic woes to understand just how important it is that she be a good friend to Charlotte in this moment. Charlotte is seeking two things from Georgiana during their discussion. Firstly, she desperately wants to share the joy of falling in love for the first time with her friend. Secondly, when Charlotte reveals that Sidney confessed he was his best and truest self with her, she is hoping for validation. Because of course Sidney would feel his best and truest self with Charlotte, right? She may be a farmer’s daughter, but she is also intelligent, outspoken, determined and unfailingly kind, so how could he not? Instead, Georgiana responds with, “why would he say that?”. Rose Williams does such a beautiful job here, because Charlotte’s hurt and disappointment is so clearly etched across her face. What Charlotte desperately needed in that moment was a friend to ease her doubts, and unfortunately Georgiana is too wrapped up in her own heartache and anger to be that for her.
Tumblr media
Charlotte ends her discussion with Georgiana with as little reassurance and clarity as she began it. She is desperate to believe that Sidney returns her feelings, but her whole world view has just been called into question and on top of that, she spent the day before on the receiving end of Sidney’s mixed messages and Eliza’s pointed remarks. And here is where I think the argument for Charlotte’s passivity falls apart, and should be instead seen as a (eventually thwarted) step in Charlotte’s character development towards a balance between sense and sensibility. Passiveness suggests inaction, and Charlotte chooses to act – she asks Sidney whether she can join him on his walk into town. This may seem inconsequential, but it is anything but. Because Charlotte is not only choosing to trust in her feelings for Sidney and in his feelings for her, but she is telling Sidney his feelings are reciprocated and those feelings are strong enough that they need time alone to discuss their possible future together.
Now, I don’t have to tell you the scene of Sidney and Charlotte walking across the clifftops left me in a swooning heap like every silent film actress worth their salt. I think that was the collective fandom response. However, I do want to discuss the intricacies at play in Sidney and Charlotte’s interaction, because I have seen it misconstrued as passiveness, when really the agency lies with Charlotte the whole time. We began with the scene with a rather inane discussion about the weather and Charlotte’s family (Sidney’s eye roll of self-disgust at his poor conversational skills is everything) – Sidney is both desperate to discuss their conversation from the previous night, but patiently waiting for Charlotte to indicate that this is something she wishes to do. She does, telling him she would rather continue their walk together than return to town for her dress fitting.
Charlotte – “We seem not to be walking into town?”
Sidney – “Ah, yes, your dress fitting. Forgive me, what a fool I am. Should we head back, perhaps?”
Charlotte – “No, there is absolutely no urgency about my dress fitting. A walk along the clifftops is much more to my taste.”
Sidney – “Good. My thoughts exactly.”
Sidney is willing to end their walk and the possibility of discussing their feelings at the slightest hint that this may not be something Charlotte desires. However, following Charlotte’s lead, Sidney admits that he wished to find time alone with her to discuss their conversation while glancing at her mouth every five seconds, and of course (because really, who could say no to Theo James?) they kiss. What is important to note is that Sidney continues to check in with Charlotte at every point in the lead up to that moment. Charlotte only had to say no or ask to return to town for Sidney not to proceed, something she is well aware of and actively chooses not to do. Responding positively to Sidney’s actions is not the same as passiveness. You only have to watch as Charlotte stares longing at Sidney to know that she desired the kiss just as much as he did.
Tumblr media
Which leads us to Sidney’s almost marriage proposal at the midsummer ball and the closest Charlotte and Sidney come to meeting in the middle of their respective character arcs, between sense and sensibility. While Charlotte is still prone to introspection, asking Mary how she knew that Tom was right man for her (hey Mary, I think we’d all like to know the answer to that one), she has regained some of her confidence back, no doubt buoyed by the confirmation that Sidney returns her feelings and wishes to create a life with her. Charlotte’s agency in pursuing a romantic relationship with Sidney is once again highlighted during her conversation with Young Stringer.
Young Stringer – “So, you have found a reason to stay?”
Charlotte – “Yes, I believe I have.”
When Charlotte chooses to seek Sidney out, she is actively choosing to place faith in her judgement and in Sidney. Both Charlotte and Sidney are hesitant, terrified of being hurt for very different reasons, yet they are willing to risk their hearts for a chance at a life together. Which is why Edward’s interruption and the fallout from the fire is so heartbreaking, because not only do we see a return of Charlotte’s doubts, but Sidney and Charlotte are never again as close to coming together as they were in that moment.
There is no doubt that Charlotte’s misgivings about Sidney’s love for her are somewhat well founded. Rooted in the uncertainty of the failed proposal and her insecurity regarding Eliza, Charlotte’s doubts are mostly due to her belief that the other shoe is sure to drop, because why would Sidney Parker ever wish to marry her, a farmer’s daughter? The reason Charlotte is so hurt by Eliza’s snide comment about her marriage prospects in 1x07 isn’t because she cares what Eliza thinks of her, but because she’s terrified Sidney, the person whose good opinion she values the most, may think her unsuitable. Her letter to her sister written while Sidney is returning from London is evidence of this insecurity – insecurity that is unintentionally stoked by Sidney’s mixed messages and Eliza’s sharp tongue in 1x07.
“Oh Alison, it’s possible that my future too could depend on Sidney’s swift return. I wish I could tell you more, but it may be very soon that I have exciting news to share.”
Even knowing that Sidney was interrupted during his proposal of marriage, despite his assurances that he will once again make an offer when he returns from London, Charlotte can still not allow herself to completely believe that Sidney wishes to marry her. When Sidney tells her he can no longer make her an offer of marriage, because he has engaged himself to Eliza in exchange for her funding Sanditon’s rebuild, Charlotte’s worst fears come true. Charlotte has been found wanting and her dream of marrying Sidney was only ever that, a dream.
When Charlotte and Sidney meet again at Lord Babington and Esther’s wedding, Charlotte has transformed from sensibility to sense and fully assumed her role as Sanditon’s Elinor Dashwood – emotionally guarded and reserved in the face of heartbreak and disappointed hopes. Their conversation is painful to watch – Sidney holding himself back from enquiring how Charlotte truly is and Charlotte assuming the picture of detached politeness.
Sidney – “How do you do Miss Heywood?”
Charlotte – “Very well, thank you.”
Sidney – “And your family, are they well?”
Charlotte – “Very well.”
Sidney – “Ah.”
Charlotte – “How are your own wedding preparations?”
Sidney – “Elaborate.”
In the face of Sidney’s clear regret and Eliza’s pointed comment about, “simple country weddings” (another dig at Charlotte’s marriageability), Charlotte remains guarded, her mask firmly in place. Even when Young Stringer questions her about Sidney’s engagement to Eliza, Charlotte’s armour of good manners does not break.
Young Stringer – “I gather Mr Sidney Parker is engaged?”
Charlotte – “Yes. I wish them both every happiness.”
Sidney – “She’s not half the woman you are Charlotte. If he can’t see that he doesn’t deserve you.”
Charlotte – “Thank you Mr Stringer.”
Tumblr media
By the time that Sidney stops Charlotte’s carriage on the clifftops as she leaves Sanditon, Charlotte’s character development has reached its ultimate end for the season. Transformed from an outspoken, determined young woman who wore her heart on her sleeve and believed marriage without love was, “a form of slavery”, Charlotte has now traded places with Sidney, carefully guarding her bruised and battered heart and becoming emotionally withdrawn from those around her. When Sidney approaches the carriage to speak to Charlotte, you can see the hope bloom across her face. For the briefest of moments, Charlotte allows herself to believe that Sidney has come to declare his love and prevent her from leaving Sanditon. Therefore it is incredibly heartbreaking to watch as Charlotte realises this isn’t the case and she schools her face one again into a mask of controlled politeness. In truth, Charlotte is barely keeping herself together – like Elinor she is a moment away from breaking apart. Because despite her heartache, Charlotte is still desperately in love with the man who caused it. What’s more, she understands why Sidney made the decision he did – an impossible decision in impossible circumstances. It would almost be easier for Charlotte to hate him. Even now as he seeks absolution while planning to marry another woman, she can’t help but want him to be happy.
Sidney – “Tell me you don’t think too badly of me.”
Charlotte – “I don’t think badly of you.”
Sidney – “I don’t love her, you know.”
Charlotte – “You must not speak like that. She loves you and you have agreed to marry her. You must try and make her happy.”
When Sidney tells Charlotte that he is not in love with Eliza, what he is really saying is that he is in love with her. But for this new Charlotte, it is all too painful to hear and she stops him before he declares his love. As Elinor so neatly declared in Sense and Sensibility, “to wish is to hope, and to hope is to expect,” and Charlotte cannot afford to wish that Sidney was still hers. It’s fitting then, that when Charlotte once again begins her journey home to Willingden she does not look back. A woman of sense has no place for such sensibility after all.

I saw a post where you did an appreciation post for Jack Skellington and was curious could you do the same for Sally?
Of course I’ll do an appreciation post on Sally! That’s like asking if the sky’s blue. :P I really do adore her and think she deserves some more love since Jack keeps getting the spotlight. I’d love to go in depth about her.
So, here I go, the many reasons why I (and others) love Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas:
Tumblr media
What I really love most about Sally is, well, her character! Obviously she’s shy and reserved at heart, and as Caroline Thompson herself puts it, she’s “Jack’s truest friend, resourceful and brave.”(Source: The Film, The Art, The Vision). And she absolutely is!
Sally’s bravery comes in a lot of ways. She risked a lot coming to Oogie Boogie’s Lair trying to free Santa. Despite being in the face of a villain and her life at risk, she still stood her ground with Oogie, even threatening him on Jack’s behalf. Not only is she brave in that sense, but even though she’s the odd one out of the crowd - the only one that doesn’t support Jack’s decision with Christmas - she still stands strong with what she feels is right. And that’s not a very easy thing to do.
And as for Sally being resourceful - well, anyone who’s watched the movie would know! She tricks Dr. Finklestein with the whole “wooden spoon” trick, sneaking out when he’s busy, pulling her thread when he has her, poisoning his soup & masking the smell, and even jumping out of her window knowing that she can reattach herself. She’s always one step ahead of him, and it’s because she’s clever. She uses her abilities to her advantage when she knows she needs it.
Tumblr media
One thing that sticks out from me the most is how much Sally does for Jack. Even though he doesn’t listen to her warnings, she still helps and supports him. She doesn’t hold any of his mistakes against him or had that “I told you so” attitude. Even if she doesn’t think she’s “the one” for him, she doesn’t let that get in the way of helping him.She does her best to warn him, takes precautions, and risks her own life after she hears that Jack is in danger. She does a lot for the people she cares about, and that’s a wonderful reflection of her character.
She’s also relatable. When you have feelings for someone, but it doesn’t seem like they feel like same way, it can hurt a lot. And in her circumstance, seeing someone she loves being sent away to their possible doom despite trying so hard to keep them safe, it was really heartbreaking. The way she’s treated by the Doctor and how unhappy she is there(being locked in her room for so long and insisted not to go outside) really got to her. But she got the happy ending she wanted - Jack to notice her feelings, and him feeling them back. After seeing how sad she was through the film, she finally got what she strove for all along: someone she understood, related to, and helped bring her out of her misery.
It does wonders to my heart to see how Sally changes around Jack. She becomes happy and that fact alone is to appreciate that she found her happiness. That it’s possible for anybody - even if you are a little different from everyone else.
Tumblr media
And like Sandy Claws himself said, Sally gives Halloween Town its sensibility. She’s clearly different in both a physical and mental sense, she doesn’t look like or think like the others do. Her lips are lopsided, she has troubles walking, she loses her limbs, she has stitches everywhere - but none of those tributes overshadow her sweet and caring personality. Everyone in the town likes Sally, and like Caroline Thompson also said, she gives the best advice. Overall, she’s a wonderful friend to people, and she shows that in many ways.
(She also calls Jack ‘Mr. Pumpkin King’ when she first meets him! How adorable is THAT????)
