Funny thing about the moon, it can get bright. Like... sort of blindingly bright. I was out on some back roads hunting for a good area to shoot stars, and out past the tree line you could see the moon rising. When it finally got up above, I literally had a fully defined shadow. Most of what was pitch black around me was fully visible. In this shot of the power line near the trail I was driving, you can see how it's almost in full color. Such a strange but beautiful sort of lighting. . . . . . #moonlighting #brightmoon #starrynight #starsinthesky #astrologypost #astrophotography #landscapescapture #travelphotographer #wanderthewest #wanderers #oregonexplored #exploregon #explorers #getoutthere #getoutstayout #bewhoyouare #findart #capturelight #hikeoregon #hike365 #photooftheday📷 #potd📷 #photographerlife #liveauthentic #liveoutdoors #outandbeyond #igers #loveeveryday #greatoutdoors #inthewoods🌲

BLOG: How to do the W–like a champ
There’s a 20-minute window in the morning, just after sunrise, when the sun bathes the mountains in pink light.
The iconic Torres peaks shining in all their jagged glory at daybreak are just a glimpse of what Torres del Paine’s W Circuit has to offer. Though most trekkers do it in four days, my husband and I spent six nights on Chile’s most famous hiking route. I have to admit, Spanky is the chief planner–I just get to go along for the ride and critique what went well and what didn’t in the end. Works for me!
A full week gave us ample time to complete the full circuit and then some, but if you must do it in four days, here are our recommendations:
Day 1: Puerto Natales to Torres Central (13 mi/20 km) Take the early bus (7:30 a.m.) from Puerto Natales to the park entry point at Lake Amarga. Most people go east-to-west, but it can be done either way. After paying your entry fee (21.000 Chilean pesos), hop the shuttle (3.000 Chilean pesos) to Torres Central, where you will stay for the evening. Don’t settle in too fast, as you’re going to get right to it! Hit the trail up to the Torres Mirador, which is approximately 13 miles round trip (20km) and should take you 3.5-4 hours up and 3 down–how much time you spend up top basking is up to you. (If you want to catch sunrise on the towers, which we passed on, you should stay at the highest camp, Campimento Torres.)
Day 2: Torres Central to Cuernos (8 mi/13 km) Onward! Today will be filled with rolling hills, but it is only a little under eight miles (12km) to Refugio Cuernos, the most rustic of the refugios in which we stayed. Because it is rustic, it also has the highest beer and wine prices, but you can order an a la carte pizza with a brownie for dessert if you are opting out of the full room and board (see more about eating on the trail below).
Day 3: Cuernos to Paine Grande via Britanico Mirador (14.5 mi/23 km) This day is the long haul of your trek, but it gets you right up in the middle of the W, nice and deep like. As gross as that sounds, it was actually my favorite portion of the trek. Get an early start, no later than 8 a.m., and head for Camp Italiano, where you can drop your pack before ascending to the Frances and Britanico lookouts. Frances comes faster than you think, but reveals spectacular glacial views. You can head back down and on to Paine Grande or you can continue on to Britanico through the forest and up one last incline to the panoramic Brit viewpoint. (*The thing you should know about miradors on the W is that you actually do need to hike all the way to said mirador to get the best view.) Once back at Italiano, it is just another couple hours to Paine Grande, which is owned by the other refugio operator, Vertice, and lies on the banks of the brilliantly blue Lago Pehoe.
Day 4: Paine Grande to Grey by way of high Glacier Grey Mirador (11 mi/18 km) After a night at the hotel-like Paine Grande–it even has a bar!–continue on to Refugio Grey. Upon arrival, drop your bag, grab a bite to eat, then continue on to the glacier mirador. The close viewpoint is just a 10-minute walk, but if you want to get up close and personal, take a right on the trail and head toward the pass. You will hike uphill through the Lenga forest and cross two swing bridges before reaching the high mirador. Before crossing the second bridge, which spans approximately 100 feet over a canyon that is as deep as the bridge is long, you will see a fenced-in spot that looks like a good viewpoint, but trust me, it’s worth it to cross the bridge and get the full scope of the massive Grey ice field. If you’re lucky, you might even witness a chunk calving off into Lago Grey. Just be careful on the bridges, as the wind at Grey can really get whipping!
Day 5: Grey to Puerto Natales via Lago Pehoe ferry (8 mi/13 km) Today you’ll make the trek back to Paine Grande, where you will catch the ferry at Lago Pehoe. We took the 11 a.m. ferry and then the bus from Puedeto at 1:30, but the later ferry and bus are also an option–it’s about a three-hour bs ride back to Puerto Natales. Get back and treat yourself to a hearty bowl of king crab stew at Santolla and if you’re really feeling the need to rest up and treat yourself, you can splurge on a nice hotel for the night instead of shacking up in a hostel.
TOTAL MILES: 56.6 (91 km)
*Note: While we stayed in refugios, camping is also an option, though the weather can be quite unpredictable and downright miserable at times. At the beginning of our trip during the blue sky days we were thinking, “We could have camped!” But, when the downpour and 70-mph winds set in, we were happy to be under the warm, cozy roof of a refugio–which certainly lived up to its name.
Eating on the W–like a champ:
Not only are the refugios expensive to stay in, but the meal prices are also a bit excessive (But, after four days of packaged pasta dinners, they are a huge treat and are actually very good, in contrast to the feedback I originally read online. We bought three dinners on the trail and we’re 2 for 3, as one night we got the short stick of a carrot omelet on rice.)
-We only reserved rooms–opting out of full room and board, which on average is $105 per person per night (half of the cost is meals alone)–and brought food for the first portion of our trip. As we spent the first two nights at Torres Central and didn’t have to hike with our packs either days but left them in our room locker, we packed a bunch of heavy tuna and salmon cans and even hauled a bottle of wine in to save a few bucks ($9 USD instead of $15, so drinks are actually pretty reasonable until you get to Cuernos and Gray, where it was $24 for the cheapest bottle. Beer is $5-$7.)
-Torres Central and Cuernos, both run by Fantastico Sur, have a la carte menus. Instead of forking out the cash for full room and board, you can order up a heaping plate of fries or share a pizza for dinner and share with your hiking partners for $20 to $30 total ($10 to $15 per person for two people sharing).
-If you don’t want to spend as much, you can pack your own breakfasts and lunches and just purchase dinner. As long as you make it to the refugios before 5 p.m., you can order dinner for the evening; it usually starts at 7 p.m. If you are packing oatmeal and coffee packets for breakfast, most refugios will have hot water sitting out, so you can just smuggle that every morning without even cranking on your own burner.
Insider tip: Consider going in the offseason, specifically in fall (early April). The trails and refugios are not as crowded, but the biggest benefit is the awesome light show from the trees, which display fall at its finest in golden, orange and burning red leaves.
OUR TOTAL COST: *Amounts shown per person
Transportation: -Round trip bus from Puerto Natales to Torres del Paine: 15.000 Chilean Pesos ($22 USD) per person -Torres del Paine park entrance fee: 21.000 CP ($32 USD) -Shuttle from gate to Torres Central: 3.000 CP ($4.50 USD) -Ferry from Lago Pehoe: 18.000 CP/person ($27 USD)
Food: -Groceries: $30 -Meals at refugios: $100 (1 day full board and two dinners) -Beer/wine: $50
Lodging: Refugio Torres Central: $88 Refugio Cuernos: $55 Refugio Paine Grande: $48 Refugio Grey: $30
TOTAL (per person) for 6 nights on the W: $487 USD
(*Other hikers we met along the way said they paid approximately $1,000 USD per person for the full, four-night, five-day package deal, which included the full room and board at refugios as well as transportation to and from the park and a sleeping bag.)
Other potential costs: -Sleeping bag rental: $10/night -Cook set rental: 2.000/night ($3/no) We ended buying one pot to cook our nightly pasta in then ditched it when we ran out of food) -Other equipment: tent, trekking poles, boots, etc.
