Pray for Powder Ugly Sweater Party!
Tumblr media
December just wouldn’t be complete without a little snow and some ugly sweaters. Our good friends over at Gociety realized that and decided to throw their second annual Pray for Powder Ugly Sweater Party!
On the roof of Battery 621, below some twinkling lights, the Nordic god, ULLR was definitely pleased with the showing from everyone coming out to have a good time. There were games and free snowboard/ski waxing that could not be passed. The horrendous Christmas sweaters were out in full force and the night was loaded with Christmas spirit. Maybe it was the drinks from Upslope and MANCAN Wine, but everyone was cutting a rug to the musical styles of the Wandering Natives.
Tumblr media
Overall, the night was a huge hit! Big thank you to everyone who came out to support not only us and Gociety, but all of the other brands who wished in winter and party at the same time. We’re already starting to look for next year’s ugly sweaters and can’t wait for the epic party to follow!

spoiler alert: I had no idea I would be nervous
Our fun little staycation/vacation is over and my mom is on her way back to Denver. It’s the first time since we got here that I’ve actually been at my house to stay - we were back and forth between the airbnb a bunch and my mom had a rental car. It was definitely weird when she dropped me off that I’m just supposed to stay here. Surely enough, I had a little meltdown when Mom left (read: we are a whole country apart), but I’ve been feeling that coming for the past day and a half. Honestly, I’ve been so excited about this move that I really didn’t think I would get anxious. I wasn’t anxious before I left, so I didn’t consider that it could happen after my mom left. It makes sense now though..we were busy checking out Boulder, getting my room set up, stuffing our faces, and drinking lots of lattes. Now, I’m just kinda dropped here and need to figure out how to get around and all that. I also am itching to meet people so it doesn’t feel so empty - like I don’t really have anything to do. It really doesn’t feel like I have a life here yet, which is nerve wracking in ways.
I’m sipping on chamomile tea to calm my nerves. It’s in a mug that just happened to be in my house and has one of my favorite sayings on it: “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly.” So, I’m in my caterpillar stage right now for sure. My anxiety is telling me my world is over, that I left my home and my life and everything I knew and now I’m alone and stuck here. But I know in my heart that’s certainly not true here, and I’m definitely not stuck here. I’m excited to be here, it’s just not my place yet. I have five whole days before I start work, but then I will be busy and I’ll meet people and I’ll have a routine. I’ll be a butterfly sooner than later, and I’ll probably laugh when I think about how anxious I am in this moment.
This morning after breakfast, my mom and I went to meet the family I will be working with as a nanny for the next 3 months. They were so welcoming, down to earth, and friendly. Sweet little Travis is 9 months and did super well for having two new people over - he hardly fussed. His adorable 3 y/o brother Charlie was there too, but he will be at daycare while I watch Travis. It felt good to meet them and have more of my life here known to me.
The coolest thing happened at dinner last night. I was telling my mom how I wish there were some sort of nondenominational but spiritual gathering space that I could go to anytime, just to feel in touch with my own spirituality. I was raised Roman Catholic for 8 years, but I would feel less at home at church than if you dropped me in Jerusalem. Boulder is super secular and progressive when it comes to religion and spirituality anyway, so I figured this would be the place for something like that. I’d love to have a warm, welcoming space in which I could meditate, meet like minded people, just go when I feel lonely.. So we ate at Shine Restaurant, and on the way back from the bathroom I saw posters for Sacred House. It’s not a physical space, but the group gathers at Shine every sunday for guided meditation and something they call building your recipe for spirituality. It draws on the idea that each person has their own recipe for spirituality, hence the departure from traditional organized religion. Afterwards, there is a *free* community organic brunch, and tomorrow there is optional yoga before the gather.
I was so excited to tell my mom I found it, and what perfect timing! I think it’s really important that I found it in time to go this weekend, begin making connections, and continue navigating my spiritual path in this new place. Plus....free. brunch. It will be a great way to center myself and begin planting roots before I start working and everything. I’m hoping it will help me move through the anxiety and changes smoothly.
Now, I’m getting on gociety to check out plans and see if I can find a hike or something cool since I don’t start work until Thursday! If you are reading this and have some spare time, send me a note or give me a call in the next couple weeks. I’d love to talk to my people. I can’t wait to find my tribe here.
