Sorry for the GoT post mortem rant but I just had a big brain moment. I stumbled upon this clip of the execution of the Tarlys and in retrospect, I can’t believe I didn’t see the atrocity that is S8 coming. That scene is a microcosm of how D&D planned to treat Dany’s character come S8. You get your Tarlys, who broke their oath to and raised arms against the Tyrells- their LIEGE lords- the moment the Lannisters promised them Wardenship over the South. Then you get Dany- (1/7)
-an ally of the Tyrells who, upon defeating the Lannister armies, does not slaughter indiscriminately but gives the soldiers- including oathbreaker Tarlys- the choice to live and fight for her instead. Now mind you, NONE of the Good Guys™ has ever done that before for their enemies in battle, much less for an oathbreaker; and by Good Guys™, I do mean people that the show has told us are Good™- Ned, Rob, Jon, Tyrion. The show opens with resident Good Guy™- (2/7)
-Ned beheading a scared teenager for breaking his oath. The thought of giving Lannister soldiers some leeway never even crosses Rob’s mind, while he later executes Rickard Karstark when he perceives him as an oathbreaker for his insubordination. Jon executes oathbreakers as Commander of the Watch, among them a child. Tyrion has no qualms using wildfire in the Battle of the Blackwater. This is just the way of this world, we are told by D&D. But interestingly- (3/7)
-when presented with the choice between bending the knee to Dany and dying, the Tarlys- previously established as opportunistic turncoats- nonsensically insist on quite literally dying on that hill, because “Cersei is the true Queen”- doing a complete 180 in their character motivation of self-interest. Randyll is suddenly willing to die for Cersei out of nowhere and Rickon insists on dying with his father. They talk big words of loyalty and hold hands- (4/7)
-framing themselves as martyrs and warriors with a cause- and Dany as a bloodthirsty tyrant who tears families apart; even Tyrion begins his transformation as his final hypocritical, preachy form, looking for the first time ever concerned over the human cost of war and Daenerys supposedly getting a taste for violence. Much like in S8, Dany is not only not doing anything wrong- she is going well out of her way to be a just and measured leader even to enemies and oathbreakers alike and yet- (5/7)
-she’s framed as especially cruel and sadistic when she loosely abides by the same medieval code that every one of our Good Guys™ does, made to look bad while everyone around her pulls a high horse out of their ass to sit on, having their characterization and motives bent exclusively around vilifying and gaslighting Dany. The text judges everyone’s actions by medieval standards except for hers. (6/7)
We ARE clowns, us Dany stans. But not because we believed in Dany’s goodness or because we were inspired by her. We are clowns to have watched S7 and still have ever believed that a fratboy duo was going to give Dany the ending she deserves. In retrospect, their intentions for her character were glaringly obvious. We just couldn’t imagine the depth of their incompetency and misogyny. That was our prize mistake- a failure of imagination. (7/7)
We are clowns for not seeing that the rushed mess of jonerys and s7 as a whole wasn’t leading to her absolute doom. My poor baby. Ugh. I hate D&D. I hate Game of Thrones. I hate myself for wasting time watching and investing in that garbage story. I would add more but I just finished watching two old men yell at each other for over an hour on t.v. and I. am. tired......... :((((((
Props to you for such a well put together take down of that absurdity. <3
