KHR Flame Types for the 07-Ghost Characters

It’s no secret on here that Katekyo Hitman Reborn has been one of my long-time loves. I love everything about it – the characters, the story, the relationships present within the story, but especially the ‘magic system’ of the various flame types within the story. Because of this, one of the things I love doing for all of my other fandoms is really sitting, thinking, and figuring out which Flame Types the characters from that fandom would use. 07-Ghost is no different in that regard, so please enjoy the KHR Flame type headcanons for the characters 😊

Teito would, of course, have Sky Flames. It’s been said many times within the canon universe of 07-Ghost that Teito has a beautiful, pure soul. He’s shown to not only have immense kindness and compassion within him, but he’s been shown to be able to understand and empathize with a wide variety of characters, even ones like Shuri who hadn’t previously shown him much kindness. Teito has, within him, a large capacity for forgiveness, and he’s shown an acceptance of people, even those he dislikes, once he learns more about their motives, goals, and the reason they do things. It’s because of this that I really do headcanon, so strongly, that he does have Sky Flames and that they’re of an exceptional purity.

Ayanami is the only person, thinking about the 07-Ghost universe, to be able to light and use almost all the Flame types. He’s exceptionally proud of this…except for the fact that, no matter how he tries, he cannot activate a Sky Flame. It’s always out of his reach, despite all his attempts and the harsh experiments he’s willing to subject himself and others to in order to grasp that Flame for himself. It’s like its taunting him with his inability to master it and make it his and he feels incomplete without it, which pisses him off more than he would ever let on.

Frau is another person who can use multiple flames. With his fiery and volatile temper and his habit of rushing into fights, he’s got strong Storm Flames, but he’s also able to use Lightning Flames at about the same level. He’s headstrong and not afraid to defend others by sacrificing his body for them, often putting himself at harm to protect others, achieving the Lightning Flame’s characteristic of being the one to draw damage to himself and away from the Family, serving as a lightning rod.

Labrador is another one where I think he can use dual flame types. I think he has Mist Flames that he’s proficient enough with. They’re not his strongest Flame, but they’re the ones he uses the most in battle situations, where he relies heavily on illusions to stun, disorient, or incapacitate his opponents without doing serious harm to them. His stronger Flame is a Sun Flame, though it lends itself most strongly to healing when Labrador uses them.

Castor has always and only had Rain Flames, in my mind. I can’t even fully explain why but it’s just a strong feeling I have when it comes to him. In battle, he can be the vicious, pounding type of Rain, a veritable monsoon that drowns his enemies in his power, but he can also be the light, refreshing rain that’s needed after a long drought, raising his loved one’s moods, and giving them much needed life and vitality.

Mikage is definitely a user of Sun Flames, natch. There’s no second-guessing, no doubt in my mind, that this boy has strong, pure Sun Flames. He’s shown, in canon, to not think twice about putting his own body and life on the line to protect the people in love. In fact, he embraces that as a purpose of his – it’s something he gladly does. Unlike Labrador’s Sun Flames, which lend themselves more towards healing, I think Mikage’s type of Activation is a lot like Ryohei’s, where it enhances his own physical fighting and attacking.

Hakuren was a hard one for me to place. I really struggled with his flame alignment, as there were three types of flame that I thought could really suit him well. I think he’d have very weak vestiges of both Cloud and Storm type flames, but he can’t light them so they’re generally unusable in battle situations. The flame type he can actually light and use is his primary type, a pretty strong Lightning Flame. Hakuren has shown a complete and utter willingness to protect those around him, often-times at the expense of his own body or his own personal desires, wants, or dreams. In canon, despite wanting so badly to be a Bishop’s apprentice, he was willingly, to protect the people who couldn’t protect themselves, to go and become Ouka’s tutor, so that the needs of the people could reach the royal family’s ears somehow. I think that, in a lot of ways, Hakuren is that lightning rod that draws the damage away from those that he wants to protect and onto himself.

Ouka is, of course, another Sky Flame user. For some reason, I see her in the role of the Sky Flame Arcobaleno, where her Sky Flame is something that is intertwined quite heavily with tragedy and sadness. The two things can’t quite be unwoven, but despite this, she tries her hardest to make the lives of those around her better. She seeks to help people, to better understand them, and to find love for them all. She’s constantly searching for ways to not use her flames for combat, but rather to use them in ways that protect and help others.

Lance is only one of two Cloud flame characters I see in the whole of the cast. While Lance is allied to the church and does enjoy his life with them, he’s often seen out on his own instead of choosing to mainly live and stay in the church for the most part, as people like Castor or Labrador do. He’s always off on his own adventure and he’s happy to drift along with his life, doing whatever brings him joy, acting on his own personal morals and beliefs instead of just solely those of the church. While he’s happy to join in on the group of Ghosts or fulfil his role as a Bishop, with Lance it really does feel like it’s more because he’s choosing to do so and because it’s something he wants rather than something he has to do.

Hyuuga is the other Cloud Flame type that I see in 07-Ghost. And, at first, it might not make sense. After all, Hyuuga is an exceptionally loyal character and a big part of his story within canon is his absolute, unwavering loyalty towards Ayanami. However, I really don’t believe that Cloud’s can’t have any loyalty whatsoever. In fact, I think that most Cloud’s are incredibly loyal people – what they’re loyal to just differs between the different Cloud’s. Hyuuga’s loyal to those he cares about, such as Ayanami and the Black Hawks, but he’s also very loyal to himself. He lives his life always focusing on his own amusement and entertainment. He does what he wants to do when he wants to do it, for the most part. Part of why he’s so loyal to Ayanami is because Ayanami allows Hyuuga to do this and gives him a place to be his flighty, eccentric, bloodthirsty self.

Konatsu has Rain Flames. Again, like Castor, this isn’t something I can explain quite as well as with the other characters. It’s just something about Rain Flame characters – it’s a vibe rather than a full thought that I can put into words. There’s a lot about Konatsu’s character that is very contradictory – he can be merciless and has no compunctions about killing when ordered or needed. He’s a furious rainstorm, water hitting pavement and bouncing up from the pure force of nature’s fury, when he’s on the battlefield. He’s that sudden sun-shower that springs up from nowhere and leaves you dripping wet and chilled whenever he gets too stressed and his temper flares. But most of the time, especially within the Black Hawks, Konatsu is the voice of reason, the sane one of the group, a gentle shower that you watch and listen to and that soothes your soul.

Kuroyuri has Mist Flames. Not only are they a strong illusionist, but they’re a really nasty one to deal with. They completely enjoy breaking opponent’s minds and bodies, whenever possible, and they toy with their opponent’s mercilessly before they use their own physical abilities to kill them. I think, in a lot of ways, Kuroyuri is a little like Fran is in my mind, where they look very cute, but they’ll come up with illusions that are ‘Great Elder Ones’ type of horror, the horror that a human mind can’t really compute, that truly teach someone the very meaning of terror and panic, without really even thinking too much about it and with no regret. In fact, they somewhat enjoy it, Kuroyuri much more so than Fran, who is largely apathetic to it.

The 07 Ghost story itself is already good, but for some reason I don't have a special attachment to any of the characters. Yes I was interested in Frau's good looks and also Ouka as the only female character who was highlighted. But that still doesn't make me love them so hard. It was only when Karu/Ea appeared that I found a character I liked.

I love Karu and Teito's dynamic. Watching their interactions is really entertaining (I haven't read the part before Raggs God House yet so I don't know if Karu was ever commit acts of violence towards him). I even prefer the Teito-Karu duo to Teito-Frau (sorry Frau), and my heart is still crying the second time I see him gone *sobs*.

One more thing that makes me interested in Karu is that he also dealt with hatred the way Teito experienced too. I'm still struggling with that problem to this day. Is this what makes me care more about Karu than the other characters? Idk.

Chapter 85: Replica 3

The scientists are looking for Ouka and the head one, the one who cloned her in the first place, offers to go retrieve her...

Meanwhile, Ouka now knows she is a clone. She begins to break down but Teito grabs her and tells her, replica or not, she is a real person with real feelings. And she's different from the other replicas because she inherited the original Ouka's soul. Her identity crisis over, Teito offers to take her out of the lab. She accepts.

The Emperor, meanwhile, is in bad shape. Still, he uses an attack that blows Teito away and grabs Ouka's hand to carve the Eye out of her, intending to start again with another replica. Ouka tells him to fuck off, however and, while he's distracted by that, the head scientist stabs him through the back, saying Ouka is his child and he won't let The Emperor take her.

Nanase, the scientist guy, says that since he killed the Emperor, he and Ouka have to run away to a new laboratory since people tend to get in your business after you commit regicide. Ouka refuses, however, and says she will walk her own path. Nanase reacts appropriately:

He's pissed that his brainwashing has failed and demands that Ouka give him his "child" back. However, the stab-a-thon continues with Raphael taking over and piercing Nanase through the chest, saying hands off the merchandise. Then, in front of the horrified Nanase, they destroy all of the dolls in the tubes to "free" them.

The Emperor survives and gets back up...only to spot Teito already standing. He asks if he's going to kill him; Teito says he won't. Teito says the Emperor needs to atone for all he's done...only the Emperor to freak out when a light envelopes him. The chapter ends with a Ghost appearing behind Teito: the 07-Ghost.

Prompt 18: Kind-hearted

Not Today  [ Open Starter ]

Uh-oh ... ! If she stayed here, they would definitely catch her! She pressed her petite figure even harder against the cool wall, holding her breath in the process. Getting caught now was out of question for her; if she was indeed captured, they would drag her all the way back to that ... that suffocating place ... !

     Stay calm, the girl thought to herself in an attempt to keep her panic at bay. I can get out of here, she continued almost desperately, I can do anything!

Right, she would find a way out of this situation. Just like how she managed to escape her old home even though the security was supposedly one of the strongest, most stable. With that little boost of confidence and motivation, the young female took one deep breath and closed her eyes, listening intently to her surroundings. Somewhere close by she heard a door being opened, the sharp crack not escaping her ears. The creak implied that it was a rather old door, probably belonging to one of the shabby buildings from this district.

     ... It was rude to enter someone else’s home without consent, but she’d rather offend someone than get found out by the soldiers of her homeland. She had to at least try! Nodding to herself as she made up her mind, she opened her eyes in determination and glanced left and right before starting to sneak off to where she had heard the sounds from. However, unsurprisingly, some soldiers were already on the street that she needed to get on for that. Her only option was to wait and hope that they would look away from down the street while not coming this way.

Second by second, her heart thumped loudly in her chest as she waited. Please, the silverhaired pleaded silently. Please let me escape!

     Just when she felt like her heart would stop since the soldiers slowly started walking down the street towards the alley where she hid, two arguing cats rushed behind them and distracted them enough for her to run off. In a few steps she was at the door and forcefully pushed it open. As expected, due to the old age of the house, the door barely put up any resistance so that she could easily slip inside. Huffing more from excitement than the quick exercise, she closed the door behind her back and leaned against it while trying to figure out what to do next. Though, that might have had to wait a little since it was then that she realized another person was standing at the far back of the hallway, undoubtedly having noticed her sudden entrance.

The 07-Ghost character's reactions to getting their hair washed by you

Ayanami

Ayanami isn’t someone who lets other people get super close to him, especially physically. He’s got a sort of hyper-awareness around personal space, both his own and the amount that he’ll allow others. There are some people that try to breach his large personal bubble and encroach on his personal space, as we see in canon – Hyuuga’s a great example. However, Ayanami either reacts with small acts of violence when people do this, if he knows he can get away with it, or he purposefully puts more distance between himself and that person.

There are very, very few people that he feels comfortable enough with to allow them within his personal space and even then, Ayanami doesn’t much enjoy physical touch. A lot of it may be due to his past life as Verloren, where everyone he touched did die and turn into a skeleton but I think there is more to it than that. I think he’s just naturally wary of other people and allowing them close to him, both physically and emotionally, and fears putting himself in any position of vulnerability in front of anyone. On top of that, I think he’s just naturally someone who is a little touch-averse, as it makes him feel uncomfortable and awkward.

Because of this, he’s not going to be someone who would often choose to shower together with a lover or who would choose to let a partner wash his hair for him. He gets his hair cut only by someone he really trusts and even then, he goes into the haircut having just freshly washed his own hair, making sure it’s still damp when he goes in and asking that they just use a spray bottle of water to soak it to the level of wetness that they need to trim his hair.

He just really will try to find ways around needing a lot of physical contact with others and when it comes to washing his hair, it’s something he’d feel much more comfortable doing himself as opposed to allowing someone else to do it for him.

Frau

Frau would be someone who would actually really enjoy showering or bathing with his partner. For one thing, it just means another excuse to see his lover naked and he’s all for any time he can make that happen, but even more, he’s someone who feels relaxed and better connected with his partner through little intimate moments like that.

He’s someone who does feel quite a bit of care and love through physical touch, so having a partner wash his hair would be something he’d really be into. The problem is that, while bathing and showering together is something that will happen pretty frequently while in a relationship with Frau, there are some drawbacks to it. The largest drawback is Frau himself. He’s a pretty tall man and it’s not that likely that his partner is going to be as tall as he is – in fact, a lot of the time, they will probably be significantly shorter, as I feel that is the type that Frau would gravitate more towards. It’s a little hard, while showering together, for Frau’s partner to really reach up to his head well enough to wash his hair for him. To do so, they’d often have to stand on their tiptoes, which just isn’t safe in such a slick environment, which is why Frau won’t let them. Of course, he could stoop or bend down to allow them to wash his hair, but that’s not a pleasant position to hold for any length of time.

To replace that intimate connection, Frau would rather ask his partner to wash his back for him or would allow them to soap up as much of his body as they’re willing to…of course, if it leads to other activities in the shower, he’s all for those possibly dangerous situations.

I do think he really likes the feeling of his hair being washed though and it is something he would like to experience more with his partner. If his partner is at all capable of cutting hair, he’ll get them to do so for him. Because his hair either needs to be wet or washed for this to happen, he’ll strip off his shirt and find some way to allow his partner to wash his hair in their sink. If they can’t cut hair, he’ll find some excuse – running late so unable to fully take a shower, for example – to also do the washing the hair in the sink thing. He relaxes into the feeling of his partner’s fingers in his hair as they wash it, closing his eyes and just focusing on the pleasant sensations. He doesn’t want a full scalp massage, but he really likes it if they use their nails in a kind of scratching motion along his scalp to get the shampoo to froth up. It’s his favourite part of the whole experience.

Hyuuga

Hyuuga is all about that physical contact. He’s someone who is very touch-oriented by nature and he’s never going to pass up an opportunity for skin-to-skin contact, especially with any partner he has. In fact, he’s going to go out of his way to find excuses to make those things happen, because it does really fill a very large need within him.

He’s someone who really would enjoy showering together with a partner. It’s often not at all sexual in nature with Hyuuga, though, as opposed to someone like Frau. He’s happy to see his partner’s naked body, don’t get me wrong, but Hyuuga enjoys showering together with his partner for mostly non-sexual reasons and it’s incredibly rare for the shared shower to lead to anything naughty. To him, it just builds a sense of intimacy, fun, and allows for a stronger connection between him and his partner.

He’s going to be the type of partner to scoop up some of the bubbly froth while washing his partner’s hair and then slather it onto their nose while laughing, just to be playful and have fun with his partner. However, there can be more serious moments as the shower is the other place, other than late-night pillow talk, where Hyuuga and his partner tend to have long, drawn-out, sometimes serious conversations that allow them to know each other better.

Hyuuga is definitely a little bit of a sook. He loves having his partner not only wash him up in the shower (though he is more than willing to and honestly wants to return the favour to his partner) and to have them wash each other’s hair. Because he has the same issue as Frau, where he’s quite a tall person, he knows it’s not going to be the easiest thing for his partner to do. He doesn’t really want to risk them slipping while trying, so he keeps a bath stool in the shower for just that reason. He’ll happily take a seat, pass his partner the shampoo bottle, close his eyes, and let them do their work.

He gets a little whiny if the shampoo job doesn’t include a nice scalp massage and really enjoys it if his partner, knowing that he carries a lot of his tension there, doesn’t follow up with even a quick rub-down or mini-massage of his neck and shoulders before they rinse him. It’s honestly his favourite part of getting his hair washed.

Ouka

Ouka is another one who isn’t really going to like having her hair washed by a partner, when she gets one. It’s not because she’s against physical touch or doesn’t want that sense of closeness with her partner, though. Ouka’s going to be someone who does enjoy physical closeness and moments of intimacy with those she loves and who won’t shy away from touching her partner in innocently intimate ways – holding hands, lingering touches, reaching up to push strands of their hair away from their face, giggling as she boops them on the nose or they do so to her, wrapping an arm around them in a side hug or going in for a full hug, joining pinkies together when they can’t fully hold hands. She draws strength and courage from those small, physically intimate moments with her friends and particularly with her partner.

It’s not even that she’s not used to having her hair washed by others. Being raised a royal, it was often the job of one of the servants or one of her ladies-in-waiting to wash her hair for her. She’s even completely comfortable with her hairdresser washing her hair for her – it’s not the action of washing her hair that makes her so uncomfortable with having her partner do it.

What makes Ouka so uncomfortable with having a partner wash her hair for her is that she doesn’t associate the act itself with anything intimate, sweet, or caring. The servants in the royal household washed her hair because they had to, because it was their duty and they’d face severe consequences if they did not. Her hairdresser washed her hair because it was their job. To her, the action of washing someone else’s hair is a job, something that isn’t fun for anyone other than the one getting their hair washed.

Ouka never wants to put her beloved partner in a position where they feel like they have to serve her or where they feel like they’re responsible for her in any way. Not only is she a fiercely independent sort in a way, but she’s always wanted any romantic relationship she does enter into to be one of equals. She doesn’t want her partner to feel responsible for taking care of her, not in that sort of way at least.

Teito Klein

In most situations, having his hair washed for him is always going to be a little embarrassing for Teito. It’s a conflicting thing for him, because he will enjoy the feeling of it, but at the same time, he always feels a little like he’s being treated as a kid whenever someone washes his hair for him. That’s just the connotation he associates with the action of having your hair washed for you and he dislikes being treated like a child who can’t do something for himself. It frustrates and embarrasses him and he tends to blush and protest whenever put in those situations.

However, if his hair is being washed for him as part of getting his hair cut or done, he doesn’t really have that same reaction. He can justify it more as being just a part of the person’s job and he is able to allow himself to relax into the pleasant feeling because of that. He allows himself to just focus on them at those times and he’ll really enjoy someone who is gentler when washing his hair. He doesn’t mind some firmness in their hands or a little light scraping of their nails or his scalp, but not too much – he tends to have a sensitive scalp and he finds even a moderate amount of pressure on it feels weird and kind of unpleasant.

When it comes to a partner or lover washing his hair…well, that is definitely not Teito’s thing. While he’ll grow used to letting his partner see his naked body in sexual situations, he’s always going to feel a little awkward and embarrassed in allowing them to see him naked and vulnerable in the small, intimate, non-sexual moments. He’s not going to be the type of person who would want or allow showering or bathing together with his partner – if his partner really wanted a moment like that, Teito would much rather draw his partner a nice bath, putting in the effort to make sure the water is just at the right temperature, that the bath products they prefer are used, and then sitting beside the tub and talking to them while they enjoy the bath.

Awwwe, wholesome cover is wholesome. I guess this means we’ll be getting more of Teito’s backstory in this volume. Let’s dive in!

Ch. 67

-It bugs me how baby!Ouka and baby!Teito are always drawn with weird steampunk wings that disappear at random. It just feels like they’re just there to look cool but don’t really make any sense

-I really liked the Father’s line “don’t let go of the baton of life they passed” that’s a really good way to visualize sacrifice to a child

-Oh snap! We’re finally going to meet the remaining ghosts and there’s a woman! I totally called that one. It’s always pretty awkward when there’s a token female tho (maybe it’s like the US government? lol) 

Ch. 68

-Oh no wait, I guess these are like past incarnations of the ghosts? Why do they low-key look like the current ones? Do the ghosts just seek out a certain body/face type they like? lol 

-Okay I’m 100% confused as to how the ghosts work. So Zehel met Teito when he was a baby and knew he was Pandora’s box and what not. Does that mean Frau doesn’t have Zehel’s memories from when he was in a different body? -shrug- 

-I’m actually really glad they keep repeating the same plot lines over and over again because it’s helping me follow the story a lot better :’)

Ch. 69 

-I honestly struggled to follow what was going on in this chapter. For a second there I thought Teito was using Lab and Castor’s powers but I guess that was Ayanami? Did he have that kind of ability??

-So this chapter implies that Frau maaaybe remembers everything? It’s hard to tell at this point. I guess we’ll see 

Ch. 70 

-Okay, I really dislike Hyuga. I just really don’t like the “dastardly glasses wearer” archetype in anime and I’m not really sure why (Ovan from .hack and Jade from Tales of the Abyss come to mind). I think they feel too try hard to me or something. I prefer Hyuga’s assistant Konatsu lol. I think he got more of a starring role in the drama CDs and that made me like him

-ngl...Ayanami is definitely the hottest character in this series. That being said, it still bugs me how he doesn’t do much. Every time he’s in a fight it’s like he’s barely putting effort into it (I think that’s to preserve his cool/stoic aesthetic). I wanna see him emote dammit!

-Hot Ayanami moments in this chapter include: Ayanami commanding his scythe and carrying Teito in one arm. Gotta love villain ships amirite?

Ch. 71 

-This chapter’s called “Loss” (Hurr hurr like the meme, get it?)

-Woah so suddenly Teito and Frau are separated and Teito is an amnesiac and becomes part of the Black Hawks!? 

but really, this is exciting. It’ll be really interesting to see how Teito would interact with everyone on the other side. Also Frau is in distress. We love to see it ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Ch. 72 

-Loool I completely forgot about Shuri. It’s funny how in the dark he is about literally everything 

-There’s something hot about someone using someone’s messed up mental state to manipulate them (in fiction! Not in real life!!) I think Hannibal season 1 got me into that lol. Pretty crazy that the entire Black Hawks crew has just agreed to gaslight Teito and is doing a perfect job at it 

-Another volume finished! Only 5 more to go! (Plus the spin-off). I was excited to meet Landkarte and Ea but it looks like we only really met the past versions of them? Will we ever meet the current incarnations?

07-Ghost - Name Meaning Megalist

07-Ghost features many eccentric names, but as weird as some of them may seem at first glance, they’re mostly quite meaningful! This is a list I’ve been trying to compile for a while now, but I can’t say it’s quite complete. Please do let me know if you have any ideas or catch any mistakes! I think 07′s naming conventions are really interesting, so I hope you enjoy this list!

Teito

Wahrheit (GR): Truth -> Referencing Teito's main goal of "finding the truth behind the war".

Tiashe: ?

Raggs: ?

Teito (JP - 帝都): Imperial capital -> If you combine the “Tei” part of Teito’s name with the “Ou” part of Ouka’s, you get Teiou (帝王), which means “sovereign”! Cute little easter egg.

Klein (GR): Small -> Referencing his small stature.

Frau

Frau (GR): Woman -> Weird choice for a name for sure. Regardless, it does sound a bit like “Faust”. According to legend, Faust sells his soul to the devil to use his powers, which is similar to what Frau did with Verloren's scythe.

Sichel (GR): Scythe -> Yes, it’s not “Zehel”. Also, it’s written as 斬魂 in Japanese, which means “killing soul”, possibly referencing Sichel’s ability to cut people’s ties with misfortune.

Labrador

Ilyusha (RU - Ильюша): Elijah -> Diminutive form of the name Ilya (Илья). This one is pretty interesting. It’s most likely a direct reference to Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov, in which there is a sickly young child named Ilyusha. Labrador appears to be influenced by the protagonist of this novel, Alyosha. Believe me, I’m not making this up, there are so many similarities between this book and 07! Amemiya and Ichihara even directly reference the novel in Battle Rabbits. Also, Elijah is a prophet, like Lab.

Kraut (GR): Herb -> Referencing the Kraut house's association with herbs and other plants. Also means "cabbage". Unfortunately also a derogatory way to refer to Germans, but that’s most definitely not intentional.

Labrador (EN): A type of tea -> Yes, yes, dog. But this actually is a rather fitting name, seeing how labrador tea is often used to make medicine. Also, this name was likely chosen because when shortened as "Lab," it's "Rabu" in Japanese, which also means "love". But you probably noticed that already.

Profe / Prophe (EN): From “prophet” ->  Written as 預魂 in Japanese, meaning “soul of prophecies”.

Castor

Xínglù (CN - 行路): To travel -> Referencing his desire to travel with Lazette.

Hausen (GR): To dwell (negative connotation) -> He wasn’t very happy living in the Hausen House, was he? And yes, “Hausen House” is hilarious.

Castor (LA): Beaver -> From Castor and Pollux in Greek mythology, in which one twin dies and the other shares his life energy with him to keep him alive, referencing what Castor does with Lazette.

Fest (GR): Firm -> Referencing the firmness of the bonds they create. Written as 繋魂 in Japanese, meaning “connecting soul”.

Mikage

Mikage (JP - 御影[石]): Granite, spirit of the dead, honorable shadow -> The dead meaning is a bit on the nose, isn’t it? His name is actually short for Mikageishi, which means granite-- all Celestine family members have rocks and minerals as their names! The shadow part of his name reflects how he is always by Teito's side despite being dead, and the darkness of a shadow contrasts the whiteness of Hakuren's name.

Celestine (FR): Heavenly -> With names like these, poor Mikage was destined to die early... This is also the name of a mineral, thus matching the first names of family members. Kohaku (琥珀) means amber, Rinka[iseki] (燐灰[石]) means apatite, Kokuyou[seki] (黒曜[石]) means obsidian, and Kairen[seki] (灰簾[石]) means zoisite.

Hakuren

Hakuren (JP - 白蓮): White magnolia -> Another name for this plant is Gyokuran! Name twins! Ouka and her helpers are all named after flowers, and Hakuren and Gyokuran are no exception. Also, as mentioned above, the “white” meaning of Hakuren's name contrasts the “shadow” meaning of Mikage's name.

Oak (EN): Name of a tree -> Oak trees are traditionally seen as sacred in Europe and in some stories about Christianity, reflecting the prestigious nature of the family.

Ouka

Roseamanelle: ? 

Ouka (JP - 桜花): Cherry blossom -> Named after a flower like her helpers (Kikune [菊根] means “root of chrysanthemum” and Ooruri[sou] [大瑠璃[草]] means “cynoglossum”). “Ouka” was also the name of a warship used in WW2, which is a trend amongst characters related to the Barsburg military. And let’s reiterate the Teiou thing, shall we?

Capella

Capella (LA): Small goat -> Capella is the name of the brightest star in the Auriga consellation. Another name for Auriga is "Almaaz," which is also the name of the mansion Capella now lives in with his mom. "A capella" is a type of "church-style" music, referencing Capella journeying with two bishops.

Lance

Rance (EN): A type of marble -> This one truly breaks my heart. Yes, his name is almost definitely not Lance. “Lance” is written in katakana as ランス, but his name is written as ランセ. His name is referencing his backstory... because he turns into marble. Get it? I’m so sorry you guys.

Relikt (GR): Relic -> Written in Japanese as 遺魂, which means “soul of relics”.

Ayanami

Crowell (EN): A stream of crows -> Sadly not “Krowell”.

Ayanami (JP - 綾波): Twilled wave -> Fitting the trend of Barsburg military personnel being named after warships used in WW2.

Verloren (GR): Lost

Hyuuga

Hyuuga (JP - 日向): Sunny spot -> Fits his personality rather well, but it’s also yet another WW2 battleship name. Also, Hyuuganatsu is an alternate name for the fruit Konatsu.

Konatsu

Konatsu (JP - 小夏): Small summer -> Konatsu is the name of a sweet citric fruit, despite all other citric fruits native to Japan being bitter and almost inedible. This is referencing Konatsu being the only human in his family and the Black Hawks, who are all Warsfeils. As mentioned above, an alternate name for this fruit is Hyuuganatsu. Also, the summer meaning of "natsu" matches the spring meaning of "Haru[se]"

Kuroyuri

Kuroyuri (JP - 黒百合): Kamchatka fritillary -> A flower associated with being cursed, but also with love! This references how Kuroyuri is a good child at heart but feared by people for being a Warsfeil. The "Kuro" part of their name is usually masculine while the "Yuri" part is feminine, giving the name an overall genderless feeling, reflecting Kuroyuri's refusal to reveal or talk about their gender.

Haruse

Haruse (JP - 春?): Spring+? -> Every name in the series is written in katakana, so we don't know what the kanji characters in his name are. My bet is on 春瀬, but who knows. Regardless, the spring meaning of "Haru" matches the summer meaning of "[Ko]natsu".

Katsuragi

Katsuragi (JP - 葛城): Arrowroot castle -> Yet another name fitting the WW2 battleship trend.

Landkarte (GR): Map -> Referencing their ability to teleport. Written as 消魂 in Japanese, meaning “disappearing soul”. 

Karu

Karu: ?

Er (GR): Awakening -> Short for “erwachen”. This was a headache and a half, and it’s still nothing but a guess, but what got me to this conclusion is that in Japanese, their name is written as 醒魂, which means “awakening soul”. I’m not sure what awakening has to do with the book of hell, though. So yes, guess it’s not Ea after all?

Shuri

Shuri (JP - 首里): Name of a famous castle -> I have no idea why some people think his name is written as “Shuuri”...

Yukikaze

Yukikaze (JP - 雪風): Blizzard, snowy wind -> Also fits the WW2 battleship trend. Snow is used as a reference to Yukikaze throughout the story.

Suzu & Yuki

Suzunami (JP - 鈴波): Bell wave -> Let me start by saying that the name “Suzunami” is not used in the canon manga-- it’s only in Begleiter, the second pilot chapter. His canon name is Suzu, which just means “bell”. Suzunami, however, is the name of a battleship used in WW2.

Yukinami (JP - 雪波): Snowy wave -> Like “Suzunami”, “Yukinami” isn’t a canon name either. His canon name is Yuki, meaning “snow”. Yukinami is a mixture of Yukikaze and Ayanami's names, since the chapter Begleiter explored Yukinami's relationship with Ayanami as his first assistant after losing Yukikaze.

Eve

Eve (EN): Life -> The easiest name of all! It’s referencing Eve from the Bible! Wow!

Kreuz

Ver (GR): A prefix indicating an action has had negative consequences or has since come to an end -> This is my best guess...

Kreuz (GR): Cross -> He was born to be a bishop.

Vertrag (GR): Contract -> Referencing their ability to make contracts with people to manipulate their souls. Written in Japanese as 契魂, “soul of contracts”.

Chrom

Veldeschtein / Weldeschtein -> Possibly a reference to Willem van de Velde the Elder & the Younger, who both painted warships. Chrom often painted in his free time.

Chrom (GR): Chrome -> Yes, it’s not Krom. I know we all like the way Krom-Kreuz-Krowell look similar, but they’re sadly not accurate...

Michael

Michael (EN): Name of an archangel -> Michael is the archangel depicted as the great protector of all that is good. Referencing Teito's duty as the pilgrim of Seele. Also, it’s apparently not “the Eye of Michael”, but “the Eyes of Michael”. At least that’s how Amemiya and Ichihara wrote in on their website seven years ago, if memory serves right.

Raphael

Raphael (EN): Name of an archangel -> Raphael is the archangel depicted as the divine healer. Referencing Ouka's healing zaiphon and wish to become a doctor.

Lazette

Lazette / Razette / write it however you want, honestly (Raggs): Songstress -> A 100% made up name! Its meaning and origin were revealed in the Hausen Family drama CD.
