i think one of the biggest let downs for me in ouat was the daily mirror (honestly my own fault for thinking too hard). i'm sure that this has been said a hundred times but i feel so much about it.

not to be captain of the obvious, but within the very first few episodes of season 1 the major power structures in storybrooke are established: mayor's office, sheriff's station, mr gold's shop, and the daily mirror. prior to emma's arrival as the saviour, all of these uphold regina's reign.

then over the course of the first season (with exception), you see the figureheads of these establishments lose their position some way or the other. graham dies early in the series, sidney glass loses his job and then gets arrested, and this all cumulates in the finale of season 1 and the beginning of season 2, where everyone's got their memories back and regina, while not formally losing her position as mayor, but does face the backlash of the entire town. gold is a notable exception to this since the writers always intended for him to be a major player, but it only takes him til season 3 to no longer own his shop cause he died, and then again in season 4 when he's banished.

but beyond this, everyone regina had in her pocket was replaced by someone on emma's side. emma herself takes over the role of sheriff when graham dies and that's where we see the first crack in the foundation of regina's authority. belle becomes the owner of the shop both times gold is indisposed. i'd like to reiterate for regina that while she never formally loses the role, david acts as a stand in during early season 2 to fill in that leadership role over the general town, and then in season 3 we see snow become mayor in title for a time (whatever happened to that plot...?)

circling back to the start, the only one that is never replaced is sidney in the daily mirror, which arguably should be the most important role to fill post breaking the curse since meta wise, the magic mirror is the evil queen's most iconic henchman, more than the huntsman ever was. additionally, i'm a very big fan of free press. it's SO influential and could have played a much bigger role in storybrooke. sidney had clearly been replaced, given we still see newspapers throughout the seasons, but i just wish something more could have been done with it.

my number one nomination AND expectation was that this was gonna be a slowburn of sorts to build up henry as he grew up over the series. not only would it be perfect for the obvious reason of henry's subsequent author storyline, but there would be something delicious about regina's most loyal confidant eventually being replaced by her own son. something it being some kind of foil, where instead of the loyalty being built upon obsession and coercion and control, it's built on mutual respect and love and trust. which would then ALSO tie in very nicely to the ending of season 6 when regina becomes mayor again, and of course her and emma are allies.

i assumed that this was pretty much confirmed during the whole author storyline, and that the second he became working age in the usa (forgive me idk what it is) he would start an internship at the daily mirror and eventually work his way up to becoming the most high profile journalist in storybrooke. season 5 touched on the author plotline nicely tho i wish we could have gotten a little something more. season 6 came and went, and if it touched on anything, it was so minor that i don't remember it.

this is probably what makes it most painful to me that SEASON 7 of all seasons was the closest (and yet simultaneously also the furthest) from achieving this. yes, his journey through the realms is important, but arguably defining his writing ability in season 7 to a novel of what he thought was completely imagined, serves almost the same purpose as the storybook from seasons 1-6, but undermines him and does a disservice to him. the whole podcast subplot was close but because this was seattle and not storybrooke, and so it's not a one for one replacement of sidney with henry.

Firstly, I HATE ARTHUR AND I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL HE’S DEAD. I don’t care for the Camelot arc, but I do like dark Emma and Rumple got some really good character development (even though he went back to being the dark one). I also like Merida and it was nice to see Ruby, Dr Whale, and Mulan again. Gets an extra 0.5 for setting up my absolute favourite arc in the show (the underworld)

BELLE FRENCH of ONCE UPON A TIME. When it comes to characters I've played in the past, I feel like not mentioning this one is unacceptable. I played her on Tumblr for around six years, across three different blogs... so if you think you knew me back then, hey, feel free to ask about the urls !! But yes, I've always been obsessed with Beauty and the Beast ( I have a huge collection ) and something about OUAT just tickled my fancy at the time. This character means so much to me to this day, but the show really went off the rails...

Still love her, though. An icon.

ICY of WINX CLUB. A character who very, very briefly was considered for this multimuse but then got booted from the muse list a couple of times. I've loved Icy since I first watched Winx Club back in like 2004... She was always the HBIC, and those early 00's fashions were just... so much for my tiny nerd heart. I love playing a character who is just unapologetically a bitch, but I felt like the fandom was probably too small to get too much use out of her.

2: child of the moon, idk if you already watched that one or not but i LOVE that episode. slay red!! the miller’s daughter literally slay rose mcgowan. the outsider (belle!!!!). and lacey (again. belle!!!). manhattan (iconic episode. big. huge.). also i personally love the finale although there a pieces of it i don’t vibe with (FLOP villains)

3: the heart of the truest believer (i love you henry….). quite a common fairy slay tinker bell slay soulmates slay regina. good form (i love you killian). going home, episodes that are quite literally burned into my memory forever they affected me so greatly i love you midseason finales i love you memory of frantically rushing home from that goddamn youth group meeting to put this on 20 minutes late i love you season three. witch hunt literally a slay. a curious thing i love you regina. TIME TRAVEL ADVENTURE FINALE I LOVE YOU.

4: white out (a jane classic. she writes all the biggest slays). fall (episodes that make you soooooo excited to see the next one you go crazy insane). shattered sight (episodes that are SO funny and dumb and dramatic and camp). poor unfortunate soul (i love you ursula…). lily (um what if i was the darkness to your light or whatever lol…). operation mongoose is like if a finale was bad but also fantastic and fun and also still kind of bad in a way. its complex

5: siege perilous!!!! (another jane espenson CLASSIC. this it THE episode!). the broken kingdom (slay ouat king arthur i love your well meaning corruption arc swag i love your cuck realness i love how you studied the blade <3 hugeee surprise tumblr user arthurgirl is an apologist for ouat evil king arthur who could ever have seen this coming). NIMUE!! (episodes of all time, also what i always bring up in arguments about the greek mythology stuff coming out of nowhere. she literally reforges excalibur with the flame of prometheus). the bear king (my beloved little filler episode that’s also not filler it’s deathly important). swan song (don’t even talk to me about this one). labor of love (i love you hercules). OUR DECAY. ruby slippers (i love you gay people). firebird (i love you emma). two part finale only you/an untold story is like if a finale was awful and aired on your mom’s birthday which was also mother’s day which was also a sunday and your family went to a marching band related event for your sister and you stayed home because you like hate marching band events and you’re 14 and then you celebrate your mom’s birthday but you’re bummed because this finale was bad but then like six years later you realize it was actually good except it’s also bad

6: the other shoe (what if an episode was bad but it was about your beloved cinderella and also it’s camp actually! another hit from jane!). street rats (what if an episode was good and it was about your friend aladdin…). heartless (i love you snow and charming). ill boding patterns (gideon! what if daddy issues made you insane.) page 23 (i love you regina). mother’s little helper (gideon!! what if mommy issues made you a psychopath). awake (i LOVE you snow and charming!). the song in your heart (musical episode!!). the final battle!!! what if a season finale was the best thing you’d ever seen in your life!!

7: garden of forking paths (what if an episode was kind of bad but your friend cinderella was in it). beauty (slayyy alice!!). wake up call (“sorry i missed your little… avengers assembly” said with sooo much contempt). the eighth witch (it’s like if an episode was a midseason finale but it wasn’t very good but it also slayed). the girl in the tower (i love gay people). breadcrumbs!!! (my episode!!! he doesn’t need a great story he just wants a great life!!!). the guardian (i love gay people!) is this henry mills? (what if an episode did weird time travel and nothing really made sense but it slayed). and then obviously leaving storybrooke is THE finale. what if a series finale was a little bad but it was your favorite show and it aired on your birthday and it made you cry three times.

I’m a 25+ year old RPer with at least 9 years experience (somehow I still struggle, but that’s off topic), with minor dabblings in gif and icon making. @rogue205 Yeah, I think Cinderella was the only live action Disney animated remake I actually liked too because it wasn’t just a shot for shot remake, and it actually gave more depth and realism to (Cinder)Ella and the Prince (Kit) as individual characters, as well as their relationship. In the 1950s film, it seemed like there was more focus on the animals helping Cinderella than Cinderella and her relationships with the Prince, her father, her stepmother, and her stepsisters. I actually prefer the iconic blue princess ball gown, slippers, and hairstyle that they gave to Lily James as Cinderella’s in the 2015 film over the one they gave to Cinderella in the animated Disney film. It’s brighter, bluer, frillier, and more elegant than the one she got in the 1950s Disney film. Plus, I prefer the fact that they left half her hair down in loose curls, rather than putting it in a prim and proper high bun. It gave her a more innocent and soft look than in the animated one. The only things I would have added to enhance the look in the live action remake for Cinderella a little more would be a small pair of silver diamond earrings and a necklace with a single teardrop diamond pendant.

That being said, Cinderella isn’t really a story about a heroine who faces conflict because of her character flaws. She perseveres because of her kind heart. You get a lesson about how it’s better to deal with grief and trauma by being kind, rather than stooping to the level of those who abuse you if possible. Ella does still try to exert her agency and gain freedom by going to the ball to meet the Prince, and she defies her stepmother to try on the glass slipper that she knows will only fit her foot when the Prince goes looking to find the maiden who lost it at the ball.

You could argue that Belle was a bit judgmental in the Beauty and the Beast Disney film of the people in her town, but it also does seem like the majority of them really are just as awful as she believes they are though and through. I guess, she does have a few flaws in the animated film, though. They seem more like innocent mistakes than flaws, though. She goes to look at that rose in the glass and touch it after the Beast tells her not to because she’s curious, and he gets angry with her. She’s also rather naive for believing that Gaston and the rest of her town will take her word about the kindness of the Beast when she shows him to the rest of the town in the mirror. They tried to modernize her a bit too much in the live action movie, and Emma Watson is not a very good actress or singer. In Once Upon a Time, we get a more deeply flawed Belle, who’s exceedingly conflict avoidant in her relationship with her Beast (Rumplestiltskin), impulsive, and self-righteous. However, after S3, rather than actually addressing and resolving these issues between their characters in a healthy and consistent manner, the writers destroyed their individual characters and relationship with nonsensically repetitive storytelling and character assassinating twists for the sake of Drama™️ To be fair, though, everything about the writing for every character on OUAT who lasted past S3 was a toxic shit show of melodramatic character assassinating bad writing and wasted potential in one way or another. Rumple and Belle weren’t the only ones.

Ariel really stuck out to me the most of the Disney Princesses from the Renaissance era because she was the first one who wasn’t just another too kind and selfless for her own good role model. Yes, she essentially still had a brave, kind, and protective heart. To some extent, she was dealing with an exceedingly protective father who occasionally fell into the emotionally abusive dad territory, regardless of his pure intentions, and I can understand her wanting to get away from him after he destroyed her grotto collection to punish her. However, she faced issues because of her own flaws, too. She was bossy, impulsive, inconsiderate, and rather selfish in her obsession with the human world. I actually really loved that about her character. Most good people still aren’t as pure as Belle, Cinderella, or Snow White. We can be bossy, inconsiderate, obsessive, and selfish. No, Ariel isn’t just automatically rewarded for those flaws either. She doesn’t get to be with Eric until he gets to know the truth about who she is. She ignores her initial gut instinct about Ursula being trouble to get to be human in a way that won’t allow her to be completely true to Eric or herself, and Ursula ends up interfering in their deal in ways that almost lead to the demise of everyone else.

And another thing.

The original The Little Mermaid is about understanding. One of the main plot devices is that the witch takes what from Ariel, ladies and gentlemen?

Her voice.

Ariel did not leave the sea “for a boy.”

Ariel left the sea to be understood. Because for the whole first part of the movie, we’re shown hints of what her life is already like, and how she’s tried to be understood but nobody’s listening or communicating.

She’s introduced by describing a ship as amazing and wonderful, while her fish friend clearly does not understand and wants to get out of there.

Even her best friend doesn’t share her love for another world.

Her first interaction with her father, count how many times he’s speaking over her.

He has this prejudice against humans, and because she’s disobeyed him, he won’t listen to any of her evidence that they may not all be bad.

Even when she has a voice and a cavern full of proof that humans aren’t all barbarians, her father won’t listen to her, so he can’t understand.

And the truth is, she doesn’t have that much proof. She knows that humans are clever and make “wonderful things,” and that’s what she bases her belief in them on. But those beautiful objects, and her pretty ideals, are not enough to make her abandon her family and culture and world.

When she sings and talks about why she wants to be Part of That World, it’s because she wants to understand it. And, subconsciously, Ariel also hopes to be understood up there. Where they make cool devices, and maybe daughters can stand instead of being reprimanded. There’s this hope for freedom and being known associated with the surface.

But it’s not until she meets Eric that those ideals are really, actually, proven true.

Ariel sees Eric out on the sea exploring instead of staying in a palace on his birthday. He gets a gift from the closest person to him, and it’s clear that even the closest person to him doesn’t understand his tastes—he doesn’t want an over-dramatic statue of himself. He sticks to his ideals in an argument that somewhere out there, is the right girl for him. But he doesn’t have to leave the argument in frustrated tears. In the end, he risks his life to not only watch out for his friend, but nearly dies going back to a burning ship to save his dog.

Eric personifies everything Ariel has always idealized about the Human World—AND he might understand her.

In her one observation of him, she finds out that he, a human, is:

A Prince, but nobody can tell him what to do.

More interested in activity and exploration than palace ceremony.

Unable to relate to his closest companions.

Handsome—beautiful, not a savage.

Criticized for “silly, romantic notions” but sticks to the idea of something wonderful out there in the great beyond.

Brave, self-sacrificial, and compassionate to animals.

Eric is, all at once, everything Ariel always hoped a human could be, and yet still so like herself. They have twin souls.

She’d rather be exploring human ships, he’d rather be out exploring the sea. She believes the surface world is good and beautiful, he believes in the girl of his dreams, no matter what anyone says. She has nobody who gets excited about new adventures, and he has nobody who gets excited about new adventures.

When she sees him, she falls in love not just with his upstanding character, or even the human world he represents—she falls in love with the hope that he might understand her in away nobody under the sea does.

Then the ironic thing is, she’s got to make him understand who she is and what she should mean to him without a voice. And unfortunately, that’s really hard because he is suddenly associating his dream girl with a voice and a magical rescue.

As close as they may get when she finally does meet him face to face and gets herself human legs, Ariel and Eric can’t be together until he knows who she is, for real. After all, how can love be true without understanding?

And we’re not DONE with understanding. Because even after he learns what and who she is and still commits to her and saves her and loves her, Ariel’s back to having a tail. She’s back to being in a world where he can’t be.

Except now, Triton is the one who understands. He finally sees what they’ll do for each other—and that Eric, ”savage, spineless, harpooning fish eater with no regard” saved his daughter. He sees that they love each other and are each worthy of the other’s love.

It’s not until Triton understands what Ariel has known and felt all along that he gives her human legs the right way.

That’s the point of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. “True love is found in understanding and sacrificing for one another.”

Triton had the sacrificing idea down, but he didn’t have understanding. Eric had understanding, but he didn’t have the chance to sacrifice for it.

Ariel has both. She understands that Eric’s world is not only barbaric, but beautiful, and she’s willing to sacrifice her tail to be understood in that world.

That is what this movie is all about. And because they’re probably willing to sacrifice critical scenes, like the Prince saving the day (which is important because it provides Triton with a new understanding of humans) or the girl leaving the ocean to be with the boy (which is important because what she really wants is to be understood) the creators of the Live Action Little Mermaid are going to miss the point and ruin the movie.

Once Upon a Time Season 1 thoughts

I’m rewatching OUAT and I wanted to share some of my opinions on each season!

Background: I first watched the show in middle school and I have only rewatched season 5b (for the Greg Germann content). I LOVE OUAT. It was my favourite show for a long time, I had merch and everything. It will always have a special place in my heart. Anyways, here are my thoughts;

- I like Snow but I can’t stand Mary Margret

- She is so annoying

- Regina has the best quips

- Again, I like Charming but David is annoying

- I forgot about the ENTIRE murder plot in season 1

- Literally WTF was that

- No wonder the show is tagged ‘soap opera/melodrama’ on Disney+

- Katherine deserved better

- Rip Graham, I could care less about you

- I kinda love August ngl

- Jefferson: kinda annoying, kinda slay

- I forgot how bad the cgi is at times

- Wonderland looked HORRIBLE

- So gummy and bad, like the cgi budget was 10 cents

- Regina walking in episode 1 lol

- Love Rumple, he is one of my all time faves

- He is literally so iconic and funny both as Rumplestiltskin and Mr Gold

- Same with Belle

- I NEED MORE RUMBELLE CONTENT!!!

- Rumbelle kinda has Chuck/Blair vibes imo

- Their backstory ep was my favourite ep this season

- Blue is so shady like hmm…

- Most iconic lines: “THE CURSE ITS HERE!” “I will always find you” “give them their best chance”

- Rip Daniel

- Cora made an okay first impression but she is a lot more interesting later

- Idk why but I hate “Dreamy” I don’t like nova/astrid AT ALL

- Red’s backstory ep was a blast from the past, I read Red’s Untold Tale when I was like 11

- Rumple calling his son ‘bae’ was very funny to me in 2016

- THERE IS A TOWN IN MAINE (me skipping the recaps)

How I feel about the characters this season

Love: Rumple, Belle

Like: Emma, Snow, Ruby, Archie, August, Charming, Henry sr, Grumpy, Ashley

Neutral: Regina, Henry, Katherine, Granny, the other dwarves, Jefferson

Dislike: Mary Margret, David, Cora, Dr Whale, Blue, Sidney, Graham

Hate: King George

Season rating: 8/10

It’s iconic because it’s the first one, the Storybrooke plot line was okay, the flashbacks were good, the finale was great. Needed more Rumbelle though.
