I’m surprised that in all the seasons of OUAT, in which they have had so many characters, ranging from Snow White and Cinderella to Bo Peep and Hansel and Gretel to even Frankenstein and Jekyll and Hyde that they never had Dracula!

They had werewolves and witches and Frankenstein’s monster, but not the big bad iconic Vampire man himself, Count Dracula.

This makes me think how they would do it. Rumplestiltskin would obviously be involved somehow, Dracula would probably either be related and/or a love interest to a character at some point.

I also wonder, if they had adapted Dracula into OUAT, what characters would they keep? Would Mina and Jonathan be involved? Would Renfield still be a servant of Dracula, or something else entirely?

So many possibilities, and as a fan of the book, I am both shocked yet somewhat thankful that they didn’t adapt it, especially with how they treated a majority of their characters.

Ruby Lucas:

she's cool, and a werewolf!

She's a red/big bad wolf combo, she's bi, she gets tragically underused like so many OUaT characters

She’s a werewolf :)

We first see her as Ruby in Storybrooke where she's initially depicted as a fun-loving flirt who spends her nights most likely in a bar while wearing revealing clothes that her grandma disapproves of (and is all in red. Absolutely everything). She lives with her grandma who runs a diner and that's where Ruby works. When Emma wakes up the sleeping town, she tries to leave Granny's and ends up helping in a case that Emma's working on by following her nose. That episode also has her backstory, but when we first see her as Red in the Enchanted Forest, she's confident and helpful and not afraid to use her lycanthropy. But the start of her story has her being an innocent young woman with a love for discovering the world and her boyfriend Peter (of Peter and the Wolf, I guess). She meets Snow while still living with her Granny in her cabin in the woods and takes her in. She's so hopeful - and then she turns into a werewolf and kills Peter (after they all thought he was the werewolf and had chained him to a tree). She is obviously quite traumatized by this and takes off with Snow. But that and her subsequent adventures gives her the growth she needs to be comfortable in her own skin, whether human or wolf. And, when the curse breaks completely, you can see the change in her - she would absolutely walk through fire to help Snow and the other good guys.

Another version where Red Riding Hood also ends up being the Big Bad Wolf. She eats her boyfriend which is sad but she falls in love with Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz in like Season 5. Her red cloak is what keeps her in human form which I think is neat. When all the storybook characters are transported to the modern world, she runs a diner with Granny.

She's one of my favorite characters from Once Upon a Time. She's a cool Red Riding hood wolf girl who is bi and has seen like 3 of her love interests and her mother die. She slays very hard so I nominate her. (Also I used to have a crush on her as a kid)

She has a scythe that is also a high-impact sniper rifle.

She is literally just based on Red Riding Hood and she's such an amazing character holy heck

Red Riding Hood but with a gun. (Specifically a combination scythe/high-impact sniper rifle called Crescent Rose). Also she's gone through so much she deserves it. She's trying to save the world and keep going despite all the people she's lost. Grew up dreaming of being a hero who fights monsters. She knows life isn't a fairy tale and wants to make it better. Just went through a mental health arc where she had depression from trying to live up to her (presumed dead) mom and from her friend dying for the second time. Killed the Big Bad Wolf with her magic eye powers. Her sister is Goldilocks and her friends are Beauty and Snow White. also I love her <3

She’s the little red riding hood but also a powerful fighter with a massive fucking scythe that is also a sniper rifle and she’s so skrunkly and so gender. Also RWBY’s whole thing (well one of them) is that their characters are all inspired by pre-existing ones from older stories and Ruby’s the main character so like, poster child of ‘character based off [insert relevant fairytale here]’ so I think she deserves to at least get pretty far

Aesthetics, themes, meta, personality and raw coolness.

She is the main character of her show. The most common monster they fight is a type of wolf (its been a while since ive seen it). Her job is to hunt them down before they can eat her. this story is very much about failed fairy tales, many of the side character's inspired arcs end in failure, but (having not seen the most recent bits) Ruby is still going strong, and i really like her cape, rose petals, and use of a scythe.

She is THE RRH character of all time. She has a scythe that's also a gun and she has to be the hero because she's got super rare main character powers. She is my happy girl. Also her mom was Sleeping Beauty and her sister is Goldilocks, and she fights to stop Rapunzel from destroying everything on the world, the gods, and then herself.

8. What’s a female character in your fandom spaces that you think deserves more love?

i think snow white from ouat is kinda underappreciated in fandom spaces which is too bad because she is a prime example of a woman who has so many things wrong with her (affectionate).......she's so complex and well-drawn as a character but i feel like people sand her down to either "loving heroic badass" or "oblivious selfish hypocrite" but actually she's all of those things and more!!! her relationship with regina is legitimately sooo interesting and i wish more people cared about it because there are so many things going on there. idk. i don't think there are zero legitimate reasons to dislike her -- like i said, she has many thing wrong with her! -- but i do think a lot of people who dislike her haven't actually given her character much thought, and that frustrates me. The Set Design for OUAT was... A Choice

I hate doing this because I know a lot of people work hard to make movies and TV and if anyone's ever worked on set you know it's a miracle TV and movies actually get made but this show had... Such weird sets.

Look at Snow White's loft:

Not a single comfortable place to sit in sight.

There's a bike no one has ever used hanging from the wall.

Also, and this has been mentioned in fics a lot: both bedrooms were part of the greater space. Like, they weren't divided by anything more than a curtain and... a railing.

What family, of more than 1 couple, would choose to live like that? It makes absolutely no sense. Also, both bathrooms? Frosted glass walls. ALL AROUND. What. the. actual. fuck??

Moving on to Mifflin Street:

For a show that run for 7 seasons, we really don't see much of the interior of characters' houses. Other than the foyer and Henry's room (in season 1) we don't see any more of the Mills' house. Which is insane. What we do see is sparsely furnished and looks too much like a plantation mansion for comfort. Perhaps it is best that we didn't see more of it?

The Mayor's Office:

I don't think Regina was originally evil. I think she was normal, then she went to this workplace and it messed up her brain. I think the only thing that could make this set design worse, would be the painting of a bird on the wall. It would make it look like insane.

This is so black and white and ornate it's giving me a headache just looking at it.

I don't think this is fairytale Evil Queen. More like girlboss corporate which, if that's what they were going for with Regina, they missed the mark by a mile.

I'd have definitely gone for deep colors and vintage furniture, like

Granny's Dinner:

... is really so grey.

I can bring the characters to mind being in this space, but if I hadn't looked up the image I wouldn't be able to describe what the place looks like. I'm like, it has booths and a bar, but what does either look like, I can't tell you.

Think of places characters frequent in other shows: Luke's Dinner in Gilmore Girls, the iconic cafe in Friends, if you've seen either show I bet you can easily bring the space to mind, right? You would be hard pressed to bring to mind the grey wasteland of an interior from Granny's. Maybe they could have gone for something with even a tiny bit more character?

Having said that, Storybrooke was so white I'm surprised they ever ate any food so, maybe Granny's was actually an accurate representation of the town's food culture.

2: child of the moon, idk if you already watched that one or not but i LOVE that episode. slay red!! the miller’s daughter literally slay rose mcgowan. the outsider (belle!!!!). and lacey (again. belle!!!). manhattan (iconic episode. big. huge.). also i personally love the finale although there a pieces of it i don’t vibe with (FLOP villains)

3: the heart of the truest believer (i love you henry….). quite a common fairy slay tinker bell slay soulmates slay regina. good form (i love you killian). going home, episodes that are quite literally burned into my memory forever they affected me so greatly i love you midseason finales i love you memory of frantically rushing home from that goddamn youth group meeting to put this on 20 minutes late i love you season three. witch hunt literally a slay. a curious thing i love you regina. TIME TRAVEL ADVENTURE FINALE I LOVE YOU.

4: white out (a jane classic. she writes all the biggest slays). fall (episodes that make you soooooo excited to see the next one you go crazy insane). shattered sight (episodes that are SO funny and dumb and dramatic and camp). poor unfortunate soul (i love you ursula…). lily (um what if i was the darkness to your light or whatever lol…). operation mongoose is like if a finale was bad but also fantastic and fun and also still kind of bad in a way. its complex

5: siege perilous!!!! (another jane espenson CLASSIC. this it THE episode!). the broken kingdom (slay ouat king arthur i love your well meaning corruption arc swag i love your cuck realness i love how you studied the blade <3 hugeee surprise tumblr user arthurgirl is an apologist for ouat evil king arthur who could ever have seen this coming). NIMUE!! (episodes of all time, also what i always bring up in arguments about the greek mythology stuff coming out of nowhere. she literally reforges excalibur with the flame of prometheus). the bear king (my beloved little filler episode that’s also not filler it’s deathly important). swan song (don’t even talk to me about this one). labor of love (i love you hercules). OUR DECAY. ruby slippers (i love you gay people). firebird (i love you emma). two part finale only you/an untold story is like if a finale was awful and aired on your mom’s birthday which was also mother’s day which was also a sunday and your family went to a marching band related event for your sister and you stayed home because you like hate marching band events and you’re 14 and then you celebrate your mom’s birthday but you’re bummed because this finale was bad but then like six years later you realize it was actually good except it’s also bad

6: the other shoe (what if an episode was bad but it was about your beloved cinderella and also it’s camp actually! another hit from jane!). street rats (what if an episode was good and it was about your friend aladdin…). heartless (i love you snow and charming). ill boding patterns (gideon! what if daddy issues made you insane.) page 23 (i love you regina). mother’s little helper (gideon!! what if mommy issues made you a psychopath). awake (i LOVE you snow and charming!). the song in your heart (musical episode!!). the final battle!!! what if a season finale was the best thing you’d ever seen in your life!!

7: garden of forking paths (what if an episode was kind of bad but your friend cinderella was in it). beauty (slayyy alice!!). wake up call (“sorry i missed your little… avengers assembly” said with sooo much contempt). the eighth witch (it’s like if an episode was a midseason finale but it wasn’t very good but it also slayed). the girl in the tower (i love gay people). breadcrumbs!!! (my episode!!! he doesn’t need a great story he just wants a great life!!!). the guardian (i love gay people!) is this henry mills? (what if an episode did weird time travel and nothing really made sense but it slayed). and then obviously leaving storybrooke is THE finale. what if a series finale was a little bad but it was your favorite show and it aired on your birthday and it made you cry three times.

I am a massive massive Maleficent (2014) fan (with the Diaval/Maleficent 40k word novella to prove my nerdiness), but I don't think his costume was meant to tie in to the Angelina Jolie movie--more likely Sleeping Beauty the same way Jen was the potions/water witch gave her the Evil Queen from Snow White (for the poison apple).

Maybe it was meant in the sense of Maleficent as the party crasher who wasn't invited to the feast? But Maleficent was never a witch--in all the canon (Descendents and OUAT included) she's a fairy--and dragon.

Tho honestly Rio strikes me as much more alone and apart and along for the ride (and body count).

It's far more interesting to me that Agatha and Lilia got Wizard of Oz while the others stuck to animated Disney classic fairy tales from the 1937-1959.

I wish we could have seen what iconic instantly recogniseable witchy roles the Road would have cast Rio and Alice into. Would anyone have clocked Morgan La Fay and Circe with no context? Would we have seen Narnia's White Witch or PotC's Tia Dalma?

I do enjoy how much they leaned into a glam rock Freddie Mercury sort of Maleficent for Teen, tho. given his street clothes are a bit more gothy via The Craft, I enjoy the glitter and the iridescent lippy.

Billy as Maleficent

I watched the movie from 2014 to try to figure out why they choose Maleficent for Billy. It didn’t give me much news about Billy tbh. It mostly confirmed that Billy’s future will be complex and most likely he will have a similar and complex hero/villain situation as we have with Wanda. At first I worried about Eddie being Stefan is Billy’s story but it doesn’t really fit for me. Will there be a Stefan in Billy’s future, sure but I do not think they will take the romantic route with it. More likely an important mentor or similar who will let him down. I don’t think it will be Agatha though. We are talking further ahead. For now, I think Maleficent role as a being both hero and villain is what it’s all about and acceptance of being both. As Teen is both William Kaplan and Billy Maximoff. For now they are treated like he has to figure out who he is. But in a very Oz fashion, it was there all along, he is both.

The entire movie is that we are both and merging together. (The ending felt a bit colonial and made me a bit uneasy but I see what they were trying to do)

Another important part of the Maleficent movie is untraditional families and, I don’t even have to explain that one.

It’s also interesting as Billy is a mirror to put Wanda as Maleficent and Billy as Aurora.

Aurora is sheltered and doesn’t know anything about who she really is until she turns 16 and is cursed. Just as Aurora started to be drawn and explore the Moor world, Teen has been drawn to witchcraft without really knowing why but when he turns 16 it all comes to light.

The entire Agatha show have been all about family and especially mother/child relationships, so yeah, Maleficent was an excellent choice for him.
