Once again the calendar has reached the lovely day of April 4 (three weeks ago)! That means it is (was) the birthday of my favorite Precure, Yukishiro Honoka! 20 years after her series she would be about 34 years old today, if she were real.

It's no great secret that the formula for the original series was taking two girls from opposite walks of life and teaming them up, to represent the strength of friendship. Honoka's charm was her intelligence and pursuit of science, while remaining kind and fairly humble despite her wealthy background. Without Nagisa's influence she probably wouldn't be taking many risks, and without Honoka's influence, Nagisa would probably be dead. Well, neither of them would be Precure so probably not, but both would definitely be worse off.

I haven't actually watched Otona Precure yet, but it is my understanding that Black and White appear at the very end of the last episode, looking the same as ever. I'm not clear if they have any dialog. The Kamikta Twins (the most consistently quality part of this fandom) released a piece of artwork that included aged up designs for Nagisa and Honoka. I have to assume they're official and Toei-sanctioned.

Last year, I said I hoped for an Otona-style sequel to FWPC. The middling to negative reception of the series has me second guessing that. But the art is nice.

Those weird mangas: Katsuhiro's Hansel and Gretel

Some times ago I made a post about a not-so-well-known horror anime about fairytales, Otona no Douwa. I translated a French review of this hard-to-get series (and you can find here, here and here). Today I want to continue my dive into the weird world of fairytale mangas (because Japanese mangakas LOVE fairytales), with a work by Otomo Katsuhiro.

Otomo Katsuhiro is one of those giants of the manga, most famous for the classic that is Akira. But few people know that before he gained his great fame, he did a lot of humoristic mangas parodying classics of folktales and literature. Among those early works, can be found one of the "bizarre fairytale mangas": his "Hensel to Gretel", or "Hansel and Gretel".

This anthology is a series of short parodies of fairytales or literary works. All short, holding on a few pages, except for the very first story, Hansel and Gretel, that is the opening story and the longest of the collection, but holds within it all that the rest of the book has to offer. (In fact, I might do an analysis of the Hansel and Gretel chapter later).

As reviewers pointed out, Otomo Katsuhiro was still searching and developing his artstyle there, and the heavy influences of the European BD artist Moebius can be strongly seen. The book is apparently quite rare today, as it has gone out of print and never was translated officially - but second hand issues can still be found on the Internet in Japanese, and fan-translations are shared around.

For someone who first stumbles upon this book without knowing what it is about, massive confusion is expected - but in truth there is a logic behind the nonsense.

If you ask me, this anthology is quite uneven in quality as some stories work very well while others fall flat (from the Wolf Man story, which is... oversimple ; to the Wizard of Oz story which is just one of those badly handled typical Japanese grotesque sex comedy). Others truly are funny - I never could imagine The Little Match Girl could have a sad yet hilarious ending, and yet it has.

But overall, looking at the various stories, we can clearly identify and point out what the mangaka was trying to do here. On one side, there is an exploration of a typically Japanese absurd humor - such as the "Ali Baba" story which has some unexpected consequences when the password used is "eggplant" ; or an exploration of what happens when in "Snow-White" people find themselves unable to pronounce, understand or remember the number "seven". On the other side, there is an effort to introduce a senseless but realistic cruelty to the world of classics. Don Quixote, in his attempt to become a dragon-slayer in a post-apocalyptic world where the majestic titans are long gone, ends up satisfied with killing a newborn baby ; while the two birds that go searching for the Blue Bird of Happiness end up finding it... and eating it to be happy.

Other times, the mangaka mocks the so-called "heroes" and "protagonists" of various classical works, pointing out their actual absurdity and madness. From Achab going into poetic and over-dramatic hysterics while Moby Dick has a peaceful family reunion with her next of kin, to Robinson Crusoe clearly shown as being an idiotic colonizer and useless tyrant when the island he finds himself on is actually inhabited by dozen of people... And when classical fairytales are presented, the mangaka does the unique but very revealing choice to focus on... the uninteresting, the boring, the unflattering parts. We have a Sleeping Beauty... But it is just her sleeping and nothing happening, since we are in the middle of her hundred years of sleep. We have a Cinderella... But all we see is her fleeing the castle and de-transforming into a dirty cinder-girl dragged in the streets by pigs, while all the drunkards and inhabitants of the city complain about the racket she does at night.

Overall, the entire concept of this anthology could be taken as a desacralization of the classics. Turning funny or innocent stories into cruel and dirty ones ; highlighting the uselesness and madness of famous fictional protagonists, taking more care to focus on the parts of the legends that are usually overseen or uninteresting - and this process all culminates in a complete and humoristically blasphemous reversal of Jesus life, showing him not as the Christ, but as a monstrous Antichrist living in a world that seems to habe been painted by Bruegel and Bosch - a fitting conclusion for an anthology whose entire point is to take beloeved stories, and show that, deep down, they are absurd, vulgar or boring things about caricatural or insane characters.

But the whole thing keeps humor and joke all throughout clearly showing that these are supposed to be "loving" parodies and "kind" mockery, not an actual criticism of the source material - it is a work of dark humor, absurd humor, using rationalization and real-world logic to break down the marvelous, making the wonder mundane, and showing what cartoon violence really looks like.

I do believe this work probably won't please everybody and would be a hit-or-miss, a "I love it all" or "I hate it all". But it stays a very interesting UFO in the world of fairytale adaptations, and an example of what "fairytale experimentations" can look like.

KOKIA round-up: March 14-18, 2023

Once again, I’ll have to resort to providing summaries instead of full translations for KOKIA’s blog entries. My apologies and thank you for your continuous patience. I’ll also include updates from YouTube below to round out the news from this week. - KOKIAfans admin

In her blog entry of March 14, KOKIA informs the members of her fan club ancoro that the people who got selected for her ‘25th anniversary celebration’ have received a message telling them they won. She does feel very sorry for those who missed out and hopes she’ll get to meet them somewhere else soon.

In her entry of March 15, KOKIA reveals one of her career dreams is coming true in her 25th anniversary concert next month. Musician and violinist Norihiro Tsuru is joining her band as a ‘sound ranger’ for the concert. She holds him in high esteem and is very excited to share this news. He also did work for Nesia no tabibito (’voyagers of Nesia’), for which KOKIA got to perform the theme song, and Karakurizoushi Ayatsuri sakon ('Doll puppeteer Sakon'), for which KOKIA performed the song Sayonara wa iwanaide (’don’t say goodbye’). She’d only just debuted back then, and she thought she was a hundred years too early to invite Tsuru to perform with her, but it only took 25 years in the end. Ayako, who has been playing with Tsuru for many years, will also join on cello. The concert will probably have some charming violin arrangements, so stay tuned!

Today, KOKIA held her last of the monthly viewing parties on YouTube, this time showing her 2012 concert ‘History’. In the chat, she announced that the pamphlet for her 25th anniversary will have 32 pages. She’s thinking of selling them via the web shop too as well as at the venue, and it will be bilingual, in both Japanese and English.

Since this is her last chance to ask in the chat, she mentions how tickets for April 27 are still available for purchase via livepocket. 

She feels that the feelings of the History concert are connected to her 25th anniversary concert, and she’s looking forward to April 1, when she’ll be able to meet her audience in real life at Yatsugatake Kogen Music Hall. Thanks for joining these free streams!

New Lesbian Manga ‘Even Though We’re Adults’ from Acclaimed LGBTQ Creator Released in English

The first volume of Yuri manga series Even Though We’re Adults (Otona ni Natte mo) was released Tuesday in English by Seven Seas Entertainment. This is the latest English release by celebrated LGBTQ manga creator Takako Shimura, whose other works include Wandering Son and Sweet Blue Flowers. Unlike some of her other romances, this story is purely about a romance between adult women.

Seven Seas Describes the manga:

Ayano, an elementary school teacher in her thirties, stops by a bar one day and meets another woman named Akari. Sparks fly as the two chat, and before the night is over, Ayano even goes in for a kiss. Akari is intrigued but confused…especially when she discovers that Ayano has a husband! Both Ayano and Akari are about to find out that love doesn’t get any easier, even as you grow older.

Even Though We’re Adults is serialized in josei magazine Kiss. Four volumes are published in Japanese by Kodansha.

The first volume is translated into English by Jocelyne Allen, with adaptation by Casey Lucas and Lettering by Rina Mapa. Volume 2 is scheduled for release in June, 2021.

 I’m going to talk about “Mother Knows Best” 母親はあなたの味方 hahaoya ha anata no mikata* in one post (bc ik how it can get uncomfortable to talk about) feat. cultural differences.

*mikata means ally, but when translating I’m using surrounding context which is why it’s not outright translated to “ally”. 

Unless marked otherwise, MG for Gothel and R for Rapunzel, it is Gothel.

MG: You want to go outside? Ugh, why, Rapunzel! -> 外に出たいって言うの？はぁ、やめてラプンツェル  soto ni detaitte iu no? haa*, yamete rapuntsueru -> You’re saying you want to go out? Why, stop (this nonsense)  Rapunzel.

* はぁ is technically a sigh in this case, but it can be as an alternative expression for “what?” and others depending on translative context.

HLITF: This is not the Story of your First Night: Soma  - otona love - chapter 2 summary/translation

so i decided to spend the 700pt to buy all 6 chapters of this lol. my love for soma crosses all boundaries and languages and i decided i will get through this no matter how long it takes me. i find it kind of hard to translate sometimes because i have to figure out a lot of context re: pronouns/who’s doing what and also there’s a lot of like ‘vague’/euphemistic language when it comes to some of the more graphic bits haha. also i’m swapping into a primarily second person format because writing about “them” makes me feel weirdly voyeuristic (and somehow writing about “you” is less voyeuristic? makes no sense but i like it more lmao).

i’ve chosen to title this as “this is not the story of your first night” and have gone back and retitled the first chapter post which you can find here. 

i’m thinking of shortening it to “not your first night” but please let me know if there’s a less clunky title that would work.

anyway i’m going to put this under a cut because it is really image heavy! this is a looong chapter and i ended up taking a lot more screenshots because there were so many moments i wanted to showcase.

anyway i just had to share how google decided to translate this next slide bc i’m screaming it’s so funny. 

this is the original slide, which i think is basically saying: smiling as he’s about to make me cum with his fingers, kyokan [the instructor] casually/nonchalantly puts on a condom (😲)

you think, “i was hoping that this day would come too”

anyway you get really nervous and there’s a heartbeat sfx which is so funny because there has been no music in this story but there’s suddenly this loud thumping noise. 

“with a whisper [of my name], kyokan slowly sinks himself onto me”

i think this means he’s lowering his weight onto you, sinking onto, rather than into - you at this point.

you moan his ‘name’ (kyokan/instructor) and in response he slowly but firmly spreads your legs and then sinks deeper onto you. 

“ah... instructor’s ..... is getting really hard”

he rubs against your entrance* and your heart is pounding again. also the heartbeat sfx comes back lol. 

*i don’t really know how to translate this part because it seems to be a really evasive way of talking about like “receiving parts” if i’m reading it correctly lol

this is all so steamy but these two lines made me so emotional~~~ ((they’re so in love ahaslfkjsl my heart can’t take it)) i can’t quite yet figure out how to phrase that second line in as pretty of a way, but basically it’s saying that your heart is feeling full to the same extent as your body is feeling pleasure. 

you both moan each other’s names and you wrap your arms around his back and you’re being embraced, holding on tight to him, and he holds you tightly in return. feeling his pulsing heartbeat, you instinctively become happy. by the way there’s also this random rustling sheets sfx that sometimes pops up that i also find really funny. 

“the instructor’s thrusts gradually speed up to the rate of his heartbeat.”

you start moaning more and he asks:

soma: “too fast?”

you just respond in moans like “nn, ahh” lol, so he asks you again if it hurts, and then his movement slows because he’s worried that you haven’t answered him.

something that i’m learning about soma (as if i didn’t already know) is that he’s always checking in with you. in this case it’s because it’s your first time together but it’s something that he always seems to do and he loves teasing you so i wonder if in the later cases it’s more like light 言葉責め (verbal humiliation?) lol.

you respond no (that it doesn’t hurt) and he says

��soma: “sorry, i don’t mean to be rough-”

but you’re like “no!! don’t stop yet...!” ((she’s having such a good time lmao)) but you can’t say it so you just bite your lip and shake your head

soma: “so it’s like that, is it?”

he’s guessed what you mean and starts thrusting rhythmically again. his long hair sways with each movement of his hips, making your skin tingle even more.

you feel embarrassed that you want him so badly right from the start, but even though you’re embarrassed, you can’t escape the pleasure dominating your entire body. in fact, you want even more. you don’t want him to see your lustful face so you cover your face with your hands, but soma takes your hands and laces your fingers with his.

you note that you’re still unaccustomed to this instructor who refers to himself as “俺”** in bed, and then once again he pushes deep into you. 

**俺 (ore) is a more informal/manly way of saying “I”. soma normally uses keigo/polite language when he talks so he tends to refer to himself with 私 (watashi) but when he’s in bed his speech pattern and language changes to be more aggressive/manly.

this is just soma panting/moaning but i love his blush sprite and i always include it wherever i can lol.

anyway, you have a glorious orgasm (which i was too lazy/noob to translate properly) and that concludes the flashback. ((also i'm probably wrong but i feel like the text implies that it’s her first, which means that sex with the ex hajime was... not that great lmao?))

the music comes back now as we return to the present which is nice haha. you reminisce that soma wasn’t as mean/teasing as he is now ((lmao!!!! i knew it)) and feel nostalgic thinking back to your first night. 

you were so embarrassed at him asking you all those questions, but that’s just soma’s kindness.... or so it should be. with that, you get out of bed, reminding yourself that soma is always kind, and go to the bathroom to wash away the remnants of last night ... 

anyway i thought that was the end of this chapter bc i’ve literally been sitting here translating for ages BUT IT’S NOT. 

kurosawa: “nooo~ S [sadism] is sugoi desu ne...!”

it’s jarring to go from super steamy and emotional reminiscing about your first time with soma to suddenly kurosawa lmao. i also finally figured out that the ‘present’ (i.e. not the flashback) is set after graduation when you are already working as a full fledged public safety detective. anyway he tells you that he went to an SM bar yesterday and he was blown away by how amazing S is. only then do you realise what he means by S. 

kurosawa says that the most amazing thing is that their kotobazeme (verbal abuse/humiliation) is no joke. 

i just want to interlude here and say that i wrote this entirely summary completely chronologically and never went back to add anything retroactively and yet i was already talking about soma’s kotobazeme ages ago (and how on their first night he was probably genuinely checking in to make sure she was okay but now probably does it to tease her). i know my man so well lol 

anyway, toru tries to give you an example of kotobazeme and gets all up close and is about to whisper in your ear and then ishigami is like “that’s enough”. 

ayumu: “any more than that and it’ll be sexual harassment” 

soma: “that’s right”

seeing my #1 and #2 faves together is giving me palpitations. 

luckily, kurosawa backs off but then he says that ishigami is good at it (verbal abuse) ... and so is shusuke... and goto... 

goto interrupts him and says “shut up” which immediately proves toru’s point lol. there’s some banter between goto and soma vs toru which i’m too tired to translate bc it’s 2am and i’ve been doing this for hours but anyway goto grabs him by the neck and drags him off. 

you’re left wondering if the public safety division are all like the S types you get in SM bars... and that includes “shusuke-san” too. you ruminate on the word “kotobazeme” and then the next line is maybe my favourite line in the entire chapter script:

“no way... do we naturally do SM play now?!” 

BECAUSE HE’S ALWAYS TEASING HER AND EMBARRASSING HER VERBALLY IN BED!!!!! I KNEW IT LMAO AND IT’S ACTUALLY ONE OF MY FAVOURITE THINGS ABOUT SOMA 

just as you’re realising this, you feel a tap on the shoulder. smiling as you turn around, you get a chill down your spine as you are faced with a slightly chilly 菩薩顔 bosatsu face. i have no idea how to translate this lol it’s like a buddhist thing. i guess it would be that really like... serene face?

soma: “we’re not like that”

he whispers in your ear and..... that’s the end of chapter 2.

wow that was a RIDE. i really hope you enjoyed this super long and fangirly/low quality summary! i really loved this chapter because we get to see that first night where soma was so sweet and caring and loving (although still a bit of a tease), but also we know the theme of this story which is about soma’s verbal humiliation which i’m sure you all know i just adore. and we also get to see some of soma’s moves in bed haha. i’m hoping that in the future chapters we’re going to get some more kotobazeme from soma which i’m so excited for lfakjsdlk what kinds of dirty things is he going to say!! and more importantly, what kinds of embarrassing things is he going to make YOU say?

hi! I'm kinda new to jpop but i kinda want to escape kpop and jpop seems to be just as exciting. i only know Faky well and i do know the names of the big girl groups in Japan but not many songs by them are familiar to me. as you can see i absolutely LOVE Hello! Project groups, they are really easy to listen to and have excessive international fanbase (compared to other acts), so you will find news about them without trouble. As for now Hello! Project consists of:

Morning Musume (’18) - literally group that is 20 years old. They started in 1997 as five members, then kept adding new ones, while previous members were quitting (or graduating, if we keep the jpop vocabulary). As for now we had 41 members over 14 generations (a generation is made when members are added - the number of members added at once varies from 1 to even 4, but 15 person lineup is maximum).The biggest hits they had include: love machine, koi no dance site, ren’ai revolution 21, happy summer wedding, aruiteru, one two three, wagamama ki no mama ai no joke. there are so many good songs for them, so if you want to know more, send me another message, i don’t want to flood it there...

Angerme (formely known as S/Mileage) - they are also generational, but they started in 2009 as 4 members. Since then, only one original member left is their leader Wada Ayaka. They had so many good songs lately, but i personally love Umaku Ienai, Dondengaeshi, Mahoutsukai Sally and Taiki Bansei. The member Sasaki Rikako is part-filipina! 

Juice=Juice were touring south america lately and they have many foreign-inspired songs such as ca va? ca va? and fiesta! fiesta! and also their dream road is a gem! 

Country Girls - are the group i personally love, but they become something like holiday-unit, since 2 members decided to focus on their studies, and 3 others were transferred to other groups (the ones i already described). But they are still active since like 1999 (with yearly-long hiatuses but still!). From the newest generation i personally adore ALL their songs, so here you got the playlist.

I personally love Keyakizaka46, they are part of Sakamichi Group, which are produced by the same guy who created AKB48, which you might heard about, since they are doing the Produce48 with Mnet, lmao. Anyways, Keyaki are quite young, since they debuted last year and CREATED A FREAKING BLAST in Japan, so i think every song they released was a hit? There are currently 43 of them, and 23 are in kanji keyaki (the main group), others are in hiragana keyaki. Songs that i’d recommend, include: Silent Majority, Sekai ni wa Ai shika nai, Shibuya Kara PARCO ga Kieta Hi, Futari Saison, Otona wa shinjitekurenai,Bokutachi no sensou, Fukyouwaon, Eccentric, Kaze ni Fukarete mo.The thing about Keyaki is that you can’t view the original videos from their official yt channel if you don’t have japanese proxy. So the views on links i provided are way lower than what you’ll see on their original, japanese-targeted channel.

AKB48 - are legends, and you can find anything ALL48 related on stage48 and their wikia. Biggest hits include: Heavy Rotation, Koisuru Fortune Cookie (they performed it on MAMA this year lmao), and my personal fav, Kimi Wa Melody, Kuchibiru ni Be my Baby, Ue Kara Mariko.

PASSPO☆ - they are... flight attendant themed group, like i’m not joking. Their leader is named Captain, sub-leader is Chief Purser... really. But they are also a band!! Like full-time band, not the sub-unit kind (ex. AOA Black). The best songs in my opinion are Mr. Wednesday, GPP, Bachelorette wa Owaranai, 7′s Up, Perfect Sky.

And last, but not least, my little kiddies from Team Syachihoko, who started as local idols, but then expanded and are doing budokans now?? How??? I love E-Kurashi, J.A.N.A.I.C.A., Shampoo Hat, Ultra Cho Miracle Super Very Power Ball and Cherie! I posted performance videos where i could, simply because 3BJunior (their agency) has anti-lipsync policy and they are always doing shows live HOW???

T/N: In case some lines didn’t make sense, here are some lines with a few explanations of what I think it means－

※ I think to an extent, “Let’s control it” ― By “let’s control it,” it means “I” want to control “my” feelings.

※ My feelings go up & down ― Feeling nervous.

※ Stop displaying it around, stop ― (Let’s say that “I” is a “she”) She is trying to say that her feelings should stop trying to display it or show it off to the person she likes.

※ This is an emergency like never before ― “emergency” is referred to as the nervousness the “I” (am) feeling due to “your” reaction.

※ I promise, but I just promise ― since the line before this is “this time, the talk talk is from me,” this line (bold) is trying to say that it’s like the only promise “I” will make. Or disregarding the previous line, this may also mean, “I promise, but it’s only a promise, nothing more.”

※ Line “引きこもってたい無意味なtime 今日は流れ” was honestly hard (probably due to lack of particles). “引きこもる” (base of “引きこもって(たい)”) means to seclude one’s self, stay indoors, or simply be a shut-in. The word “引く” however, means to draw back or withdraw something. Considering the latter explanation, the translation would be “I want to withdraw/draw back this meaningless time; today is passing” instead of “I want to shut myself; this meaningless time, today is passing” which doesn’t make much sense.

※ As for line “いつも泣いてる絵文字,” it might sound misleading because in the first chorus, “泣いてる (naiteru)” would be heard as “抱いてる (daiteru),” which if you imply that in the line, it would be translated as “My heart always displays an embracing emoji” which is already out of context. “TT” is a crying emoji, so it definitely wouldn’t make sense if it were “抱いてる” instead of “泣いてる,” plus it would be way more logical if the latter was used than the former.

Even though no official lyrics had been out for this Japanese version, I decided to put this up due to fans’ inaccurate translations. I’ve already seen several videos of this song with lyrics & English translations, which honestly is absolutely inaccurate and Google translated.
