What are your experiences with love? Disappointing? Challenging? Frustrating? Fulfilling? Inspiring? I don't think anyone I've known who's ever been in love would use words like "easy" "effortless" or "painless". Forget romance--even in non-romantic relationships (as with family and friends), it is a DAILY challenge to know how to love others well. I've read many stories of married couples who admit there are more than a few days when they feel no love or desire whatsoever for their spouse. And yet, love is not only what challenges and grows us; it's what makes us human. Love is the character of our Creator God, and He CREATED us for love, from love, and to love. . . One of my favorite quotes of C.S. Lewis is this: "Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable." It is tempting to want to shield and guard our hearts from any kind of love or giving towards others. After all, who wants to be hurt and disappointed repeatedly? But as we look to our Savior Jesus, who died on the cross out of His great Love, who would dare to live a life without that kind of Love? . . Prayer Challenge: Are there people in your life you find difficult to love? Or maybe you're tired of loving at all? Heavenly Father, Your name is Love and You alone know what it means to sacrifice for the sake of Love. Teach us how to be love-filled, Love-centered people who continually lay our lives down for others in the name of Love.
