Liesel's Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Night Watch

A ficlet involving Liesel and Knave meeting! Sorry for taking so long @iwoszareba; I hope you like it!

Near the Crooked River, on the way to Sorrowflow

Liesel fed another log into the crackling fire. It let out a spray of sparks in return, and they instinctively jumped away. They could feel the moment they lost their balance as their feet failed to find purchase, their arms windmilling as their ass plummeted towards its inevitable meeting with the soil. Fuck, that hurt. They barely stopped the curse from leaving their lips, biting the lower one so hard it bled to keep it in. They’d be damned if they woke up anyone else in the camp for a stupid reason, especially one as stupid as this.

Standing up, they dusted themself off and returned to their post by the fire. It might have been Sarenith, but that didn’t mean nights–at least here in the River Kingdoms; Liesel had never been elsewhere, except for that quick trip to the border of Brevoy that had begun all of this–didn’t trend towards colder than comfortable. Besides, it helped the people on night watch do their duties; it was much more stimulating than casting Light every ten minutes. And it scared away wild animals.

While it could attract people, those were what Liesel was best at dealing with. If talking didn’t work out–well. They had a whole array of mind-altering spells at their fingertips, and if those couldn’t immobilize any threats, they could certainly weaken them enough for their bleary-eyed companions to feel they were able to and be able to finish the job. A shout or two would certainly suffice to wake them; Octavia especially was a light sleeper, and she could rouse Regongar, who certainly would be loud enough to do the same for everyone else…

Liesel’s fingers, which they now found they had unknowingly been drumming against their legs as they thought, froze mid-motion as a crack reached their ears, the sound distinct from the crackling of the fire.

It repeated, and they looked over their shoulder. There, in the brush, not that far from camp, were two little lights glinting in the dark. Eyes reflecting the light of the fire. By the size, it was probably a fox–but it was odd for one to be so close. They stood up, gingerly, and began to approach. It should spook as they got closer; if it didn’t, a basic Sleep spell should do the trick. If that didn’t, they would get the others.

They walked away from the center of the makeshift camp, leaving behind the brighter light cast by the fire. As they approached the brush, they didn’t hear any sounds of movement. With a few small motions of their fingers, an orb of light appeared in their left hand, and they lifted it towards the brush. They found no fox, nor anything else animate.

They must have been seeing things; it was a good thing it would be Linzi’s watch soon. They shook their head, as if that would clear the sleepiness from it, and turned to head back to the fire, only to nearly walk into a tall man…if indeed he could be called such.

He had brown skin, red hair, and a small tan beard on his chin (Liesel could not recall the name of the style), wore red, black, and green jester’s garb–covered in bells which somehow had made no sound as he snuck up (he must have) on Liesel–and a furry, sandy brown (the same color as his beard, oddly enough) fox mask on the top half of his face. Except, no, that wasn’t a mask at all, was it? As they took him in, Liesel realized that not only did the ears on the mask twitch as they watched, but that he didn’t seem to have human ones–and, moreover, that his hands and legs were furred (and, on the digits, clawed), and accompanied by a full fox tail that must have been protruding from somewhere around his hips.

“Greetings!” His voice seemed far too melodious for the mouth it came from–a mouth that now curved into a too-wide grin of too-sharp teeth.

It was clear he wasn’t human–there was the matter not only of his looks but how sudden his appearance had been, and, ridiculously, how silent his bells were–but what exactly was he? Given the location (and their luck, or rather–no, no time to think about that), fey seemed the most likely; but regardless… politeness, caution, and searching for further clues was the way to go. 

“Greetings,” they returned, in a tone as even as they could. “Who are you?”

“I’m the Knave Commander, but just call me Knave. The alternative takes up too many syllables you could spend on more interesting things!” He paused for a moment, and his tongue flicked along his too-sharp teeth. “Like who are you?”

Liesel hesitated. They were well aware of all the stories about fey, including about what they can do with enough information on you, but some instinct in them–something from the same place that tells them not to put their hand in the fire–told them that lying to this…Knave would not probably be a good idea. They tried to inject some confidence into their voice. “I am Liesel, baron of Shrike and the Outskirts of the Stolen Lands.”

Knave waved his hand, as if swatting the words away like a particularly annoying fly. “I know all I care to about your character. I have no idea why anyone would play such a nauseatingly boring role on purpose.” He perked up. “No, I’m much more interested in the actor!”

Liesel’s fingers twitched for their knife. They tried to still them; they couldn’t start a fight because they couldn’t win it. They didn’t know what to do. They didn’t know how to handle this. They couldn’t lie but they couldn’t tell the truth because there wasn’t one. But they had to say something because they couldn’t say nothing because–because his tongue was running along his too-sharp too-many teeth and they didn’t know what that meant and they didn’t know who this was and they didn’t know how to find out and they didn’t–

“I don’t know anything about them.” The words fell out of their mouth, their tongue heavy. “I don’t have the answers you’re looking for.” They swallowed. “You can’t find what you want here.”

He studied them, his yellow-eyed gaze taking in every part of their appearance, from their short-shorn hair to the soles of their boots. “What a pain. I will have to come another time, later or maybe sooner.” He stretched, yawning, then smiled again. “I will make sure that you are not disappointing next time!”

He walked past Liesel, and by the time they could make themself move, by the time they could unroot their feet from the ground, he was already gone, having not even left footprints. 

All was quiet, except for the sounds of nature, and the crackling of the fire, and the drumbeat of Liesel’s heart beating in their chest as if it might burst.

There was nothing to do but return to tending the fire and keeping watch, and so that is what they did.

Bellamy stared at his ask, and Chausie at his. "Uhhh." Stealing a look at the other, Chausie arched his brows. When no reaction was forthcoming, he coughed into his fist. "Well! Happy and loved, huh, uh…" Rubbing the back of his neck, he couldn't tear his gaze away from Bell's face. The neutrality of it, eyes lidded, somewhere between annoyed and resigned. "… Not this," he finally muttered. "Hey, let's switch." Plucking Bellamy's question from his hand, Chausie replaced it with his own. "Oh, look at that, what would make me give up? Probably having to do all this alone." Bellamy shot him a look, and Chausie grinned. "Okay, your turn."

Slowly, Bellamy looked down at his… new question. "… Staying here," he finally mumbled. With you went unspoken.

Chausie's eyes crinkled up, cheeks heating, and he leaned down to rub his face into Bellamy's hair. Neither of them had to say it.

Can you talk more about your lore/history of Evaric and his brothers. Every time you post a new character I become obsessed, your art brings me immense joy.

You're very kind, I sure can! They're D&D/Forgotten Realms OCs I made for fun and RP.

The brothers are from Espar in Cormyr and they're the sons of Alice, a farrier.

Evaric was sent to train as a paladin at age 13 at the closest temple to Lathander, the House of the Morning. He refused his holy oath, dodged conscription and left the country at age 20.

Cohle is a sorcerer who won't say two words if one unequivocal action will do.

William, nicknamed Billhook/Bill is a knave and a thief through and through

Deor is a forester and painfully responsible homebody.

They do not! Evaric, Cohle and William (Alice is fairly sure) are the sons of Alice's first husband, a thoroughly horrible man whose leg she broke with a forge hammer and kicked out of town.

Deor is her son by an elven druid who came back to Espar when Alice was free to be with him and she has settled down to a much happier second marriage.

Assorted other tidbits:

Alice's first husband tried to come back when his sons were grown but Cohle dealt with him before he could ruin Alice's happiness. Only Deor knows this.

William is the only one of the brothers who can't use magic. Cohle bullies him about it mercilessly.

Cohle apprenticed at Candlekeep, Faerun's biggest repository of knowledge.

Evaric has travelled the world and plans to see more of it, he's not yet returned to Cormyr in the 15 years since he left.

Deor is the shortest of the brothers but he's also the best shot so anyone who stoops to a joke about it gets something whipped at their head.

Cohle and Evaric used to be incredibly close but Cohle ruined it. He knows what he did.

Malleus as Jack: both kings, both over their heads a bit, need to listen to those who care for them, passionate, wants to make others happy. Both living the same life and routine over and over to the point of boredom.

True! As those who have followed me for years know, I fell ill in 2020 and have been very irregular with updating. Due to Long Covid, I barely have energy and time to write as I am asleep a lot. It also means I can't work a proper job any longer. Which sucks. I'm currently a stay-at-home mom. Still sleeping a lot.

I have had surgery last August, removing my womb etc, got rid of a tumor and have been feeling a lot better since. But like I said, still limited energy thanks to the long-term drag of covid and sleeping a lot.

Any plans?

Yes! You haven't really seen me around last year because I tried to focus my energy on writing original tales to publish in 2025, since I can't work a proper job. I'd saved up money to achieve that goal (buy cover, hire editor) but then my laptop broke down and I had to use up my savings to replace it). Any more questions? Just ask! :)

Lavender Haze ( Violet Kingsleigh & Cian Hearts ) has now been merged with Long Live The Queen ( Queenie Hearts & Ace Hearts & Maria Frollo & Helena ) to create a clusterfuck political intrigue series, and several more Wonderland characters have been added to the mix

Mihail

inspired by the Knave of Hearts, from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, Mihail is a student of Heartslabyul

his family was close with the Rosehearts family and during summer break he often met Riddle and his friends

his left eye was damaged when he was only 5 years old leaving it blind

he's quick witted, learns fast and is able to adapt to any new environment quickly

he sees an opportunity in everything and gets what he wants, doesn't matter the cost

in his free time he reads a lot, practices swordfighting and spends time with the school's horses

next to Ancient Magic, he also excels at Animal Linguistics and Physical Training

as a child he read many fantasy books and fairy tales and wanted to be a knight because of them

he's very competitive in everything he does, he either has to be the 1st or 2nd in all the things he gets into

he has an academic rival in Animal Linguistics class, called Vincent Heimdall (oc)

Relationships

Riddle

they are good friends, they know eachother since they were children

they often study together

Mihail wants to be his right hand so bad, he does many things for Riddle, helps him enforce the house's many rules

he wants to be 2nd next to him sure, but he also cherishes their genuine friendship

being in the same club brings them closer together

Vil

they are in the same class together

Mihail learned about fashion and makeup from him

since they are both competitive, sometimes they can't stand eachother. when that occurs, they don't talk to eachother for long days, sitting next to eachother in total silence

we could say they are best friends

he often visits Pomefiore to talk with Vil about almost anything

Vil, as he does, often gets annoyed by him, but only jokingly

Sebek

they know eachother through Equestrian Club

Mihail looks up to Sebek for his dedication to Malleus tho he also despises him for it

Trey

he's jealous of Trey openly, for as he puts it "just because he's wise or whatever and was his [Riddle's] childhood best friend doesn't mean he just gets to be vice leader i mean what" (Vil finds this jealousy annoying and doesn't get it why would it matter to Mihail)

Silver

again, knows him from Equestrian Club

they became good friends after they found out they both like fencing as a hobby

they often train together

Mihail looks up to him genuinely

Vincent Heimdall (oc)

academic rivals in Animal Linguistics

they get to know eachother in class and while trying to outsmart eachother they stupidly fell in love with the other

they have been dating for 1 year now secretly, keeping up the facade of the rivalry

only Vil, Riddle and Silver knows about them

its lore rant time but it's late and I'm sleepy and also had two breakdowns so there's no brain function!!! but I have. so much about my religions teehee under the cut because I fear it will be long (it is. it's so long. I have so many thoughts and Feelings)

Gods

okay so the first thing to know is my world is broken up into. I think 6 major continents (the 7th is a country made entirely of floating islands)!! Erreliuma, the continent divided into the most countries (6; Rethan, which El, roh's mc is the third princess of; Regallia, where most of roh takes place; Auvovia, where Zircon is from, Cerrin, Koran, which Flare is from, and Tashen, which is Astraea's homeland once upon a time) is where the Actually existing gods are mostly associated with!!! all of my notes actually call them Erreliuma's Gods because originally that's what they were

As of now, there are 33 of them, divided into four categories:

Celestials, which are the sun, moon, darkness, and light

Heralds, which are nature, life, death, and time

Majors, which is a rather long list but includes war, wisdom, love, magic, alchemy, etc.

Minors, which is also a long list but includes mischief (Calixto moment!!), nightmares, dreams, both hunts, the arts, strategy, etc.

Astraea is technically counted as a minor god, as she is judgement, but she is kind of undefined by the gods themselves

But basically, these gods are the ones that are really Real!! If you mention a god in my world, these are the ones that Will Hear, even if they're not the ones you're explicitly mentioning! Multiple other countries follow these gods beyond Erreliuma, including 2 other continents (3 countries between them) and the nation of floating islands :)

Entities, Unfathomables, Chaos

There are also technically 2 other "real" things; the only beings everyone believes in, and the Unfathomables :> the Beings include The Cosmos, from which everything came, The Skies, which is sort of like the underling of the Cosmos and just watches this planet more closely, and The Guardian Star (who is technically the narrator of all the stories I write in this world!! teehee)

the unfathomables are. the horrors. The Infinity, The Eternity, and the Dream Eater! Infinity and Eternity are very similar, but basically Eternity is more rooted in reality, and Infinity is more weird and shifty! Dream Eater does very little other than Haunt People, so not exactly part of a religion, but...

Infinity is where an oc I mentioned kind of vaguely (I think), Knave, gets his ability to alter reality! The Infinity is also the being which created dragons in my world, so Pallas also technically gets her reality shifting from it, although hers is more diluted!

The Eternity has a cult that follows it. it's currently nameless but they send a member to go burn books in the woods every year cycle and it's kind of fucked, because typically the person is also sent as a sacrifice they expect the Eternity (or y'know. The fire they start) will claim the person. The Eternity doesn't really accept this but also has no way to stop it because it doesn't like to leave

And then there's Chaos! Chaos is. undefinable but weirder. technically it created all 3 unfathomables and has also existed since the dawn of time, but The Cosmos ignore it and no one else knows how to categorize it

The Musician

One country in my world, known as Citruine, has a. a thing. that j call The Musician. It is kind of like a worm in the sense that in myth, it was cut in half by chaos but not all the way??? So it split down the middle and one Not Quite Half is male (Aranos) while the other is female (Aranosia) it's. it's weird. I don't know why I came up with it but now I did and I'm keeping it (it was because I'd already named landmarks and didn't feel like fixing it)

Fae Worship Cult

my last religion is technically not even real. the fae in my world are Not Gods, and actually have their own set of Concepts they tend to call on (Fate, Fame, and Fortune) although they are more likely to reference the Skies than anything :]

Now, my fae are very very connected to The Weather. This is actually part of how most of their magic is set up and how my court division system works (weather events and types)!! now psople. People see that Fae can control the weather (not true) and go damn I need this rain to stop. what can I do? let me sacrifice a person!

And so at every Major Change Needed this cult known as Beacon Lighters throw someone off into Faerie, which is a feat in itself! Faerie is beneath a continent like. hell but physical. real. why not screw witg reality more? but yeah they sacrifice a person hoping to appease the fae even though the fae themselves are not gods and it's Strange

Anywyas yeah that's what I have going so far I have a lot of moving elements and it's weird and hard to follow cause I'm not naming very many countries but like!!!! these ideas do spread around as well I just have them mainly region focused for basics for now :D

Anyway, this is my creature for a coming DnD campaign; his name is Astrit (you can call her Ass, Tits, Asstit, Asshole, Assface, Titbrain, you get me), they're a Yuan-ti and a Pact of the Fiend failcringe Warlock, and generally a jerk (they're a noble, of course they're a jerk) (sorry, was that biased?)

sorry, sorry, my day got away from me.

Okay, let's talk about the three sentences in Knave 1 that are the reason the entire rest of the series exists.

When he hangs up with Captain Strand he hesitates, has a moment where he desperately wants to call his mother and say, there’s this boy, and I think I’m in love with him, and he’s been shot and I’m terrified I’ll never have a chance to tell him that, show him that he can trust me, that we could be great together, can you come hold my hand? But he doesn’t because what would either of them say if he did. It isn’t the kind of thing they talk about.

One, I am low key impressed/appalled that that first sentence is a solid five lines long and has more subclauses than I can count (@cecilyv, someday I'm gonna infect you with this, because it's only fair that this is reciprocal, and you've already sold me on m-dashes). On the other hand, it's a nicely balanced run on sentence, so there is that.

But more importantly, two, this is the paragraph that niggled at me. And made me kept asking - in this universe, how do Carlos's parents find out about TK? What does that look like? (and then later, what if Carlos actually had a chance to say the things to his parents that we never get to see on the show). And then I had two scenes that ended up being the cornerstones of Knave 2 that wouldn't leave me alone.

1 - the diner scene

TK looks up at him warily. "Hey, baby."

He looks exhausted, but the smile he gives Carlos is familiar and warm. Carlos sits down. "Half the city is looking for you, you know."

TK nods. "I figured."

Carlos gives him an exasperated look. "Then why are you here?"

TK shrugs. "It's Thursday. We always come here on Thursdays. I wasn't going to miss date night."

2 - the scene where Carlos comes home from Sunday lunch with his family.

TK’s reading when he gets home, curled up in the corner of the couch. He’s got his laptop open and a pad of paper next to him and he’s making notes with a tiny frown of concentration. He hasn’t looked up yet, which means he’s probably got headphones in, and for a thief his situational awareness is for shit, but it means Carlos gets to watch him for a moment, and he aches with how much he loves this.

He must make a noise, or the movement when he takes his coat off catches TK’s attention because he looks up, pulling out his earbuds. “Hey, baby. How was lunch?”

He hates that that’s a question that TK has to ask, that TK hadn’t been there with him to listen to his tios complain about the price of gas, and his mother whisper that Tia Francesca’s flan is somehow getting worse. And just for a moment he hates that TK never pushes Carlos to invite him, never complains about being left to his own devices on a Sunday afternoon, that TK understands the boundaries Carlos has drawn for himself, and doesn’t ask him to step over them.

And then I had to figure out how to combine them - and eventually I realized that for the heist plot to work, where Carlos believes without question that there's something other than the obvious going on, that you have to see why he has that kind of faith. And thus, split timeline, that I wrote separately and wasn't at all sure was going to work once I spliced them together.

Also, random fun fact - in one of the early drafts of Knave 1, Carlos had two sisters. I ended up cutting them because I wasn't doing anything with them, and they were yet more OCs I had to try and keep track of, and I already had a lot.
