In regard to the tags on a previous post, I think it’s about time I come clean about some personal things related to a discord server I had been in and was removed from several months ago, and why. I won’t say everything in this post will be 100% objective or “what really happened,” but it will be at the very least the most honest I can be about the whole situation.

I joined a server sometime last year that was all about the inFAMOUS game series, something I’d gotten back into after the Destiny fixation wore off (which is now back again. lol. lmao even), and very importantly to me it was a server largely focused around the various OCs of its members. I love creating ocs for anything I’m a fan of, and finding a whole community of people for this tiny niche fandom that was geared towards what interests me the most about fan culture was like a dream come true. It was a pretty contained server as well, which was also very nice, as I tend to be overwhelmed easily by large servers even if the culture there is generally positive. The members were all extremely welcoming and friendly towards everyone who joined, which in hindsight just makes me all the more frustrated with myself over what happened, that I would ruin my relationships with so many wonderful people because of my own vices.

To get right down to it, I was removed over sending a controversial piece of nsfw-adjacent writing about my ocs (both over 18, both unrelated, just to be clear). I’m not going to repeat what I’d posted, that will forever remain between me and the locked note sealed away in notes app quarantine. In truth, what I had written hadn’t even been 100% in earnest, it was really just me trying to be “one of the cool kids” with an idea that had been only half-thought out and poorly executed, compounded by the fact that I wrote it all in a blur really late into the night and sent it without thinking. It feels pretty stupid as to why I would do such a thing, looking back on it now, but insecurity’s a hell of a brain poison when you’re in the midst of things.

By “one of the cool kids” I mean that the general server culture around nsfw topics was fairly lax, from my perspective, and it seemed like no one was really afraid to delve into convos or writing around characters’ kinks or sexual situations with various pairings. Since becoming a part of the server, I got the feeling of missing out on something everyone else was enjoying because I wasn’t doing the same, like I was standing outside looking through a window at a fun party everyone was invited to except for me. I’ve been a writer for a while now, but before then I barely had any experience writing about explicit topics or kinks (even my own), and I was admittedly way out of my depth with multiple things I’d written of that caliber that I shared in the server before, including my fateful message. In the moment, it seemed rather harmless, with two of my own characters who both enjoy pushing each others’ buttons in certain ways, but in actuality what I sent ended up making several people who read it uncomfortable with the subject.

To be completely honest, many of the conversations that happened before in the nsfw channel had also made me personally uncomfortable (YKINMKATO), so I just kept it muted, checking it on my own time when I could be in the right headspace. That meant I was largely unaware of any conversation happening around my post at the time until I checked the channel again later and saw multiple people’s comments about it, which in turn made me hastily write a follow-up to try and explain things better in context, but instead that just made everything worse and led to me being removed from the server due to a conversation I was never privy to. I don’t blame the admin or mods or anyone for how they responded at all, in hindsight it was largely deserved, and not just for that reason alone.

I won’t sugarcoat the situation. The way I engaged with the community and the people themselves before then, after the initial bout of anxiety around talking about my characters with others wore off, had frankly become unhealthy for me and unpleasant for everyone else. I let insecurity, jealousy, entitlement, and selfishness go to my head and mix into a really toxic mindset that made me think of it less as a collective of likeminded fans and more as a hierarchy of popularity. Instead of truly engaging in fandom and celebrating others’ creations, I’d just stew and rot in my own emotions because the same amount of “engagement” others had wasn’t happening with me, the most important person in the server (/s). I talked a big game about my own wip and still have next to nothing to show for it (I don’t know if I’ll ever have anything to show for it now, even if I want to). I derailed convos on others’ channels to talk about my own things and steer them towards myself, on several occasions. In general I’d been very inconsiderate and self-absorbed to my fellow fans, and that wasn’t fair for anyone involved. I was just making myself miserable, and as a result I ended up hurting the people I was supposed to call my friends. If not for that message, then it would’ve been just a matter of time before something else got me removed, I’m sure.

There’s really no excuse for my actions given that they caused other people harm. Honestly, if I ever was given a second chance to return, even in good faith, I don’t know if I would. The damage has already been done, and all I can do now is try to amend myself and move forward to do better in the future and not let my insecurities blind me to the positive relationships I do have. But for what it’s worth, if anything at all, I’m sorry.

LJ, do you think people like humor in fanfiction? i LOVE it but i feel like i don’t see it too often… that makes me wonder if it’s just not something people look for.

do YOU like a fic to be funny?

Lovely Eash! What a great question! And I have many many thoughts around it. The quick answer is yes! I love humor in a fic. It feels real and true to have people find the comedy in life, whether it's ironic or ridiculous or purposeful. I'll put some more detailed thoughts on humor in writing below the cut so not everyone has to listen to me wax poetic on this topic:

To start, these are my opinions mostly based on how I feel about writing fic. Other fic writers may have different feelings about this! I'm also coming from this as both a writer and as someone who did improv comedy for several years, where we were "writing" the comedy in real time and getting live feedback on it. So here we go!

Fic writing, to me, is an outlet for exploring feelings and situations in a safe way. It's fiction! It's words on a page! It can be a way for a writer to explore an experience they wished had turned out better, or one they wished would happen. Or they want to see a romance that wasn't explored, or imagine what being part of that would be like. I'm sort of double-talking here, since these feelings can both apply to the writer as a vehicle to create the content and the writer as a participant in the case of reader inserts, but the point I'm getting to is that fic writing often is an outlet for wish fulfillment and processing.

So it stands to reason that many of the themes of fic tend to fall into more serious topics. We want to act out the things that hurt, or that are scary or out of our comfort zone or highly improbable in a safe way. Fic is a great way to explore that! It is highly improbable I am going to seduce a Hollywood actor, especially one that's so hopped up on drugs he might OD, but I love playing around with what that might look like with Dieter. Same with falling in love with Din, or Frankie, or anyone I've ever written about. But joy can come from crafting a story that explores the themes I'm unable or unwilling to experience in real life.

Now here's where comedy comes in. As weird as it sounds, writing the heavy emotional stuff is easier. A shaking hand, a fervent glance, the pain of heartbreak, those topics have a lot of universality. Comedy, on the other hand, can be SUPER subjective. We feel it fall flat and we cringe. We're taught to scold bad comedy, but not to help build it up, so comedy becomes a scary, difficult beast to conquer. And writing comedy is a completely different beast from things like action, adventure, romance, etc. Where should it live? Is it in dialogue with a character, making them the voice for your jokes? Or in the tone of your prose, making the narrator almost become a character themself? What kind of comedy is it? Dark humor, observational humor, absurdism? Is it "really funny" or "just you think it's funny"? There's so much!

This is why I think comedy is not always explored in fic writing. It's complicated! It can throw the mood, feel forced into a scene, or if you keep it as a constant throughout you might feel like you're not being "serious" enough of a writer (which is wrong, btw, I've lost my shit laughing over beautiful writing).

I personally like both. I love a story that lets a comedic tone bleed through (beskarberry's entire masterlist is a masterclass on comedy and levity blending with serious topics, and The Things We Do for Love is a perfect example) and I love little lines scattered through a story. I personally have some favorites in my own writing, including just a silly as hell one coming up in Westworld Whiskey.

The thing I would love to see writers do is use comedy to enhance their story. Sometimes a heavy tone needs a break. Or the tension needs to snap. Comedy is a wonderful way to do that. Then you can jump back in to the angst or drama or action and it allows you to ramp back up and feel that rollercoaster of emotions because you got a taste of what not feeling it constantly was like.

I love comedy as a way to play with voice and plot and tone. I hope more fic writers embrace it and use it both as a tool, and as a way to give the audience one more emotion to explore. Because as much as making someone cry, or get horny, or feel loved or hated is an amazing review, making someone laugh is my absolute favorite thing to do.

I hope this at least entertained you, Eash, and I hope you find some of the comedy you're looking for with more creators. I'm sure there are a crazy number out there doing the Lord's work cracking jokes in battle scenes, and they deserve all the praise too!

In ref to all that 'kid at 14' stuff. Yes I agree with everyone, LCDP writers have some serious continuity problems. Not to be the devil's advocate, but LCDP was a done for thing that was meant to end in S2 until Nerflix decided to pick it up. So when they originally made it, it didn't matter if Andrés was 30 something cause it didn't change anything. Then Netflix arrived and made S3, 4 and 5 and things HAD to be added (so there were bound to be plot holes, it was inevitable). So now Rafael comes along and it's just easier for plot purposes to give Andrés Pedro's age. So okay. Kinda can forgive that.

What I still don't get is their surname's and all the family history. Because yeah, actors decided they were bros from dad and that got confirmed in S5, okay. BUT then what about the 'your father' along with the fact their surnames suggest they have dif father but same mom.

Also when Andrés reveals his illness he says 'tengo la enfermedad de mamá' as in mom's illness. NOT 'my mom's illness' but 'mom's illness' which just makes things a little confusing going by their surnames🤷‍♀️. And then (if I remember correctly) his file says 'de Fonollosa García' (or some such surname like that) so where the fuck does Marquina fits in in all this, and also who the fuck is García then? Because okay, if for some reason Papá Marquina didn't give his surname to Andrés and de Fonollosa was the mom (which again why????) it still leaves me confused about where the hell do you get the García from.

And this is all a plot hole that originates from S1 and 2 so for that they don't have the excuse of 'Netflix made us add to a finished product'.

So that's it, I hope this is at least somewhat comprehensible. And sorry for the rambling😅.

(P.S: remember I'm a biologist (in training)? So I have this thing where in thanks for bothering people with my nonsense I sometimes drop bio related stuff. I work a lot with bats, so here, have this little guy I was with a couple days ago. And sorry if you don't like them😅. But honestly how could you not? Just look at this cutie and that smiley face🥺. We decided to name him Dukúr, and we got pretty close.)

Yeah lol I still think it’s hilarious that they tried to set an age and height for Andrés for no reason, only for those two specific details to be proven wrong at every turn. But I agree that we should look at S1/2 with a different context since like you said, Netflix picking it up meant new additions that don’t quite match up (like Andrés’ age) were inevitable. Still funny but understandable.

re: surname: Despite how on board I am with the same father hc now, literally all clues in S1-3 pointed at same mother. And you pretty much pointed out why! Anyone watching would have assumed they shared a mother. I guess we could say Papa Marquina was just blatantly not there for Andrés so he felt the man was more of Sergio’s father. We could also say Andrés is just self-centered and assumed he could say “mom” and Sergio would just know he’s talking about his own mother lol.

The de Fonollosa Garcia thing is throwing me off too though LOL (also funny thing is I was literally just wondering what his second surname was and then you sent this ask, answering my question haha). OK so I’m sure you understand this way better than me, so I hope you don’t mind me asking the following series of stupid questions in response asdfaadf:

To my understanding (correct me if I’m wrong!), Spanish surnames go “father’s first surname” then “mother’s first surname.” So if Andres for some reason took his mother’s surname, would he be allowed to take both of hers? Or is that just not a thing? As in, could de Fonollosa be his (maternal) grandfather’s surname and Garcia his grandmother’s surname?

The other alternative (again, I’m not sure if it makes sense in the cultural context?) is that Andres was a bastard child, but his mother was married to someone else. So Garcia really is his mother’s last name and de Fonollosa is his stepfather’s last name?

OR, the theory that I hate the most because it feels in-line with lcdp writers asdsdf, Garcia was supposed to be Sergio’s last name, but they changed it to Marquina at the last minute and forgot to change Andres’ file. Moral of the story: writing as they film has its perks, but it also leads to objectively awkward plot holes about basic details LMAO

P.S Yes, I do remember! I see your biology pics a lot on Tuuli’s blog haha Listen, I may not personally go near bats for no reason IRL, but I feel so blessed seeing these adorable images. He has such a cute little face omg, so pure, so blissful- thank you so much for sharing these pics of Dukúr with me :D He has blessed my crops, cleared my skin, filled me with humble happiness!

Warnings: Language, mature themes, a steamy scene that bumps up against the line of smut/not smut…it looks like smuttish is, in fact, a thing, (see what I did there? Toss a high five to your fic writer for the paraphrased Witcher quote in these here notes! lol! Sorry, i’m tired...and in a weird mood tonight...) so, anyway, using that. I love it.

Author’s Note: This chapter was about half done before I even started SI1 and SI2! So that’s why it’s come along so quickly in the wake of them. It could also mean that there are some continuity issues…I found a couple during the re-write of the first part, and more when I was proofing, so it should be good, but…fair warning, one or more could have escaped me! Time seemed to pass slowly when Shane wasn’t with Sy. When they weren’t having dinner together, or doing their typical date thing. She thought about their second date. One of the bars in town, chosen for its above average bar food but mostly, it’s pool tables. The warning he’d given her via text had made her laugh:

We’re goin’ to Cade’s for apps and pool, if that's okay. As gorgeous as you looked in that blue dress you wore last night, I recommend jeans and a T-shirt for tonight, okay?

She took his suggestion. A simple black tee, because she was a food klutz from hell, layered over a red camisole, and her favorite jeans. It showed off her dainty arrow necklace well.

While they played, they drank beer and talked about life, getting deeper into things than they could at therapy sessions.

“Dad split when I was about ten, I guess. Mom did her best with her only son, but she sent me to my grandpa’s a lot when she was working or just…needing her own time. He’d been an army man. Fought in Korea. His dad was in World War II. It felt like…I don’t know, this pull, like I was meant to join up.”

“Destiny?” She asked. A dreamy tone overtook him when he talked about his family and his now former career.

“I guess. Never though too much of all that before.”

They smiled at one another. Knowing.

“What was he like? Your grandpa?”

“Oh, Pap was the best. He was a mechanic in the service and so he could get anything hummin, ya know? We fixed up and built motors for all kinds a’ shit. My first car was a ‘67 Shelby Mustang with the fast back all because when I was about 14, he found most of one at a salvage yard and basically rescued it from the crusher. Got it for about nothin’. For two years we collected parts and did body work on that thing. And by the time I turned sixteen, it was the most beautiful, show-ready Kerry green machine you ever seen.”

“One of my favorite cars! I’d love to see pictures!”

“I’ve still got ‘er.” He grinned. “When Pap died, it got…hard for me to drive her, ya know? So…special occasions only now. And he left me his truck, which he’d just bought brand new while I was on my first tour. That F150 crew cab we came here in, with all the bells 'n whistles. I couldn’t let such a fine automobile go to waste.” He grinned.

“You’re such a gear head.” She chuckled.

“Hey, you may be glad about that when you need somebody to get your own motor humming.” He teased back at her, bending over the table to take his shot and sinking it deftly. He said they would only play for fun, but he was still winning this round…which she didn’t think was that fun.

“Okay, I deserved that.”

“The shot, or the innuendo?” He asked to clarify.

“Yes.” They laughed. He eventually did miss, making it her turn.

"Ya know, I'm disappointed in this date, Shane." He baited.

"How come?" she asked, a bit hurt.

"A guy only asks a girl to play pool with him so he can show her how to shoot…and you already know."

It was true. She'd played a lot growing up and even a bit as she got older. She and her siblings loved billiards. Her whole family, really. And although she was no professional, she wasn't half bad for an amateur.

"What do you mean?" she asked innocently, sizing up the table for her next shot, but knowing with a fair amount of certainty what he was implying.

"You know. I wanted to get all close to ya. Show ya how to grip that cue in your hand. How to stand, bent at the hip, where to eyeball your shot from." he smiled. "All that shit ya see in movies that makes the girl all nervous and excited that the guy's touchin' on her. Pressed up against her."

Shane grinned, picked up the small, blue cube of chalk and rolled the concave side over the tip of her cue…she had no need to do so, most people didn't, really…but she made herself look really sexy doing it and asked Sy, "Is that right? Well, I guess you'll have to find another way to get your cheap thrills, because this girl has been known to run a table." She bent over the green felt seductively, the angle at which she did so displaying her décolletage in his direction just enough to tantalize him into licking his lips. She took her shot at the 10 ball, but sunk the 8 instead, losing her the game…damn. She shouldn't have gotten cocky.

"Run it where, sunshine? Into the ground? Off a cliff?" he laughed as she stomped over and began to poke him mercilessly in the ribs.

"Come on, Minnesota Fats. Let's pay the tab and find something a little cozier to do."

"Oka--wait, did you just call me fat?" he was incredulous. She laughed.

"Oh my God, you thought YOU were gonna teach ME about billiards…Minnesota Fats is like the most famous pool player of ever. I am not calling you fat."

"You messin' with me?" he squinted.

"Sy, google it. I promise. I would never call you fat. You're… my sexy man bear."

"Technically a bear is a fat animal." he sulked.

"Why don't you tell that to one when it's chasing you down to make a meal of ya!" Shane laughed. "Come on. Remember? I think I mentioned something about… finding another way for you to get cheap thrills. Lets explore that, shall we?" she whispered into his ear. He dropped some bills on their table nearby to more than cover their food and beer, and they hauled ass into the night.

They had definitely been exploring. In the two weeks since they'd been given the green light to see each other outside of therapy--the day Sy basically handed Shane's boss her own ass--they'd spent most evenings with each other, unless Shane had a particularly late evening at work or an early day the next day. A few nights, they had been together so late, that just staying over seemed the most reasonable option. But they had both agreed to take things slowly with the physical stuff. It had been a long time since either of them had been in a relationship, and given their patient/therapist situation, waiting a while for the sex had seemed like a good idea…on paper. On the sofa had been a different story.

One day last week, she'd had to make an early night of things, and stood up from his couch, but was pulled back down to straddle his lap.

"Hold on a minute, sunshine. Why don't you gimme a proper goodbye before ya go, hmm?" he held her so close to him at every curve of their bodies, like the pieces of a puzzle snapping flush together. His kisses were deep and agonizing, his beard gently brushing her mouth, teasing her with its uncommon softness. She returned the ardor, squeezing him in every way she could.

She couldn't contain the desire pooling at her center, especially when he clearly couldn't contain his, either, straining against his shorts, pressing against her so deliciously, right where she needed him. She didn't hold back. And he was nothing if not encouraging to her endeavor.

"That feels so good, baby. You're so warm. Mmm." he whispered as he nipped at her ear and bit at her neck. She hadn't intended to, but she felt herself slipping over the edge, into pure euphoria and gripped at his hair, still rather short, though growing out from the mandated buzz. The length made him even more sensitive and when she ran her hands up his neck and over the back of his head, the result was like an electric current straight to his manhood. His body tensed as his release followed hers seconds later.

"Fuck." he said. "I'm sorry."

"What for?" she was truly confused.

"For losin' it like a teenager." he sighed and laid his head against the back of his couch in surrender…an unfamiliar sight, Shane was certain.

"Don't worry about it. I mean…it's not quite how I pictured our first time, but--"

"Oh, hell no. This doesn't count as a TIME, sunshine. This is batting practice. A warm up.”

"Ooh, you and your baseball references again. I told you, I need to leave, Sy. You can't get me worked up with that kinda dirty talk." she kissed his cheek, and stood. "Walk me out?"

He did. And they stood holding one another in the dark, leaned up against her Explorer, Sy's back against the door, Shane's cheek on his bare, hairy chest, and the turning of the earth all but forgotten.

She had to stop thinking about him. About their dates and the time they'd spent together. But her schedule had fallen apart for the day due to a nasty storm that had blown in, she had no more education to work on for now, and she could only clean and organize her treatment room and desk so thoroughly.

She guessed…the secretaries knew she was available if need be…and she was salaried…what was the harm in texting Sy? She'd stayed late and came in early and overworked herself in general so much for this clinic. She could justify a bit of downtime.

She still picked an action movie, because she wasn't really a romance movie type, overall. Even so. Could she leave him hanging?

Drunk Writing Night Starts NOW

Hello my loves, i am so so excited to kick off this amazing night! For those who have followed along in the past, welcome back! And for those who are here for the first time joining, welcome!! Drunk Writing Night is something I started back in August (I think?) and I’ve done like six or so? It’s so incredibly fun for me, and I’ve had artists and other writers join in in the past.

So, to preface my question, I just recently discovered otome games and I've been hooked on them for the past few months. After I realized how much I liked ikemen sengoku, I decided to branch out. Problem is I have little to no way of meeting other fans in person. Im 21 and I work as a battle tower secretary. All my friends are law students and my coworkers are all middle-aged. So my question is; whats the best way to make friends online with other otome addicts? Oh, and i love your blog! -Vic

Hey! Welcome to the otome game world! We hope you enjoy your stay!

In the honest truth, the best way to make friends online is to probably just reach out to people first. You can follow people, shoot them a message, and maybe try to strike up a convo from there. Making friends online or in real life still requires you to make a connection with that person and you need to put in the effort to develop it into something deeper. After all, it takes two to tango, right? But of course, since this is the Internet, remember to be wary of how much info you’re sharing with someone else and be safe too! You never really know who you’re talking to when it’s the Internet.

I know that there are discord servers for specific games like Ikemen Sengoku and Mr Love: Queen’s Choice. There are tons of Facebook groups that you can join too. Just keep your eye out for people who are promoting them and ask to join! Or look them up too.

Sometimes if you’re a content creator (writer, artist, etc.) or you make original posts on your Tumblr blog, you’ll have some interaction with your followers or fellow content creators about a series you like too. It’s not a guarantee that everyone will be your friend, but at least you’ve immersed yourself within the community/fandom and can hopefully enjoy your experience from there.

And sometimes trying to make new online friends may not always be successful just like in real life, but that’s okay! This is just the Internet. There are a lot of ways that friendships can develop, so this isn’t the only place. I hope this helps!

thats true but its like it doesnt matter until big blogs get involved and like once they do everything else gets overshadowed and all the big blogs ask boxs are like "OMGEEZ UR FIC WAS SO GOOD IT DESERVES A MEDAL" or some shit and im like "hey i wrote a fic check it out :)" and they are "like wait who are you again?" and like hey... leave some room for the rest of us i guess :|

But you know that’s not really how it works, right? Writers don’t get to say “Hey, look, I’m only accepting five nice asks and no more, go give your feedback to someone else.” Like, it sucks that people are more willing to lavish praise on someone already popular, but it’s a matter of visibility not a personal slight to you.

And visibility is what bigger blogs can help with. The entire setup for tumblr means that you have to know people in order for people to see what you’re writing. That’s why I push so hard for fic writing in this fandom to be a community. Things are nicer for everyone when we all work together. Obviously there are some people that are just... in it for the applause, all for themselves, don’t want to participate in anything that doesn’t end in more kudos for themselves. There are big writers who look at something like a fest and go “But I would get less attention, so I don’t like it.” And that sucks. That’s not a mindset I endorse.

But most people, most writers, aren’t like that. Most writers want writer friends. Most writers who make writer friends want to see their friends get just as popular as they are. So I dunno, I guess my moral here is: making friends gets you way further than being bitter does. And I’m trying to provide multiple ways for people to do that. Join in the word wars; I host them multiple times a week and there are 10-20 people in there. You’re absolutely welcome to come in, join the convo, link people to your fic, say you’d love to know what they think. It is a two way street; if you do that I expect you to stick around and actually join in conversations with other people too. But that’s literally what I’m doing this for.

I also have every intention of reblogging the tour fics, or at least most of them - sometimes fics have themes I’m just not into - but I want to wait and not just mass reblog, because I don’t actually think that’ll help. I don’t know what more I can actually do besides that.

micah (Micah Cohen, politics editor): Hey, everybody! It’s Slack chat time!

We’re in the middle of another media cycle involving questions about the positioning of congressional Republicans vis-a-vis Trump. Basically, after his press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin, people are asking why the GOP doesn’t do more to restrain Trump. So … here’s the question for today:

If you’re an elected Republican serving in Congress, is the Trump presidency worth it to you? You get wins on policy right now but you’re staring down likely losses in 2018 and maybe beyond. OR would you rather we have a President Hillary Clinton right now? You’re presumably not getting the policy outcomes you want but would likely be looking forward to gains in 2018 and perhaps 2020.

(We’re also asking this from the Democrats’ POV, but let’s start with Republicans.)

FWIW, I’ve gone back and forth on this in my head since we decided on this topic yesterday. At first I thought the answer was obvious. Now …

nrakich (Nathaniel Rakich, elections analyst): I would rather have a President Hillary Clinton.

natesilver (Nate Silver, editor in chief): #actually

clare.malone (Clare Malone, senior political writer): I’d rather have Trump.

natesilver: I don’t have enough information to answer the question.

micah: OMG

natesilver: Am I in a swing district?

micah: You’re the collective congressional GOP.

clare.malone: Hmm.

Now I’m waffling.

micah: So, my first thought was that the answer was OBVIOUSLY Trump.

natesilver: Just to complicate things … for me, the answer to this question is narrower if you’re asking me as a member of Congress as opposed to, say, a Democratic or Republican voter.

clare.malone: It depends on what you think the ultimate goal of Congress is.

To get elected again, to live another day?

Or, to accomplish something ideological?

natesilver: If you’re a member of Congress, you’re probably very concerned about re-election. And clearly you have much safer chances of re-election as a swing-seat Republican under Clinton than under Trump.

clare.malone: So. What’s the ultimate goal of a party’s caucus in Congress?

micah: OK, if it’s ideological/policy, it’s 100 percent Trump, right? The Supreme Court alone suggests that. Or, look at Trump’s effect on the judiciary more generally:

clare.malone: Right.

But if it’s about getting re-elected, then they want Clinton.

So I guess I don’t know the answer because I don’t know the goal of the Republican congressional caucus.

nrakich: You guys aren’t looking at the big picture! It’s not just Congress. State governments are important too — maybe even more important than the federal government, since it’s where much of the policy that affects people’s lives is made.

As you’ve written, Clare, the Obama years really weren’t too shabby for Republicans. They earned a stranglehold on 26 state-government trifectas (full control of the governorship and state legislature) and have used them to pass stricter laws on abortion, labor, etc. than they would have in Congress.

And if we’re focusing on Congress, that state government control is going to let the GOP continue to draw congressional district lines in 2021 unless something changes.

The Trump presidency threatens to effect that change.

natesilver: Can I ask for a redirect, Micah? Maybe we should be saying, “Are Republicans better off with Trump than with Clinton?”

And obviously there are a lot of subheadings under “Republican.”

micah: Yeah, but I don’t want to pick one subheading because then the answer is obvious.

Let’s disentangle all the subheadings!

natesilver: Ezra Klein argued recently that it was obvious that Republicans had made a good bet to stand behind Trump in 2016, because it had paid off with the SCOTUS picks. But I think it’s way too early to conclude that.

nrakich: I agree.

micah: This is actually kinda making my brain hurt …

I think Ezra is right …

natesilver: CONTRARIAN NATE SAYS RAWWWWWR

micah: In the short term, it’s paid off huge. And likely in the long term with the Supreme Court.

But if Trump sparks a wave of progressive activism — that’s obviously bad for the GOP.

But but politics always goes in cycles — back and forth, back and forth. From Clare’s piece:

So if your argument is that a backlash makes winning not worth it, then winning would never be worth it.

clare.malone: Why is it too early to conclude that, Nate? Because he might fuck up the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation?

natesilver: Because what if Republicans lose elections for the next 20 years as a result of a backlash to Trump? And, also, the public turns against every policy Trump once liked? ICE is abolished and single-payer medicine is established.

nrakich: That ^^

I also think Supreme Court picks are overrated. In the long run, they balance out — the next Democratic president will probably get a couple too. And it’s unpredictable what a justice does once he or she joins the court. Plenty of Republican-appointed justices have turned more liberal over the years.

micah: If there’s a backlash to Trump, eventually there will be a backlash to that backlash, no?

nrakich: If I were congressional Republicans/Republican voters/Republican squirrels/whatever, I would also be worried about Trump’s long-term effect on Hispanic voters.

clare.malone: I don’t know if I agree on that Supreme Court point, Nathaniel. This conservative majority could be a pretty powerful influence on judicial policy for decades. But yes, I do think it’s right to look at how growing demographic groups react to a political party.

But what are our parameters now?

micah: Republican squirrels.

clare.malone: jek;atw’ljrt

micah: Inequality these days is nuts.

nrakich:

(Yes, I know that’s a chipmunk)

natesilver: Here’s how I’d put it: There is almost always a backlash, which the party pays in the form of (1) tending to lose seats in Congress, and (1b) in state government and (2) some degree of thermostatic movement of public opinion against them, e.g. the public actually becomes more liberal when conservatives have been in power for a while and vice versa.

Those are BIG consequences so the question is — how much do you get out of it?

micah: A lot. I hate to keep going back to the Supreme Court, but …

nrakich: Probably not as much as they’d be able to with a different Republican president.

Marco Rubio could still win the primary, guys.

micah: #2020

natesilver: Hmm. So far, the GOP has gotten (i) a tax bill; (ii) 2 Supreme Court picks; (iii) lots of aggressive enforcement actions on immigration; (iv) lots of actions to sabotage Obamacare; (v) lots of … eccentric foreign policy behavior that they might not like; (vi) a trade war that they probably don’t want.

clare.malone: So they got three things they wanted, on average (if you say they wanted half measures on a couple things Trump went full throttle on).

That’s not so bad.

nrakich: But they also got some not-so-great stuff, even on policy.

micah: If you think Trump has been a mixed bag in terms of delivering on policy and ideological goals, then the answer is clearly President Clinton?

nrakich: Right.

micah: IDK, I can’t get past SCOTUS.

Democrats may or may not win a chamber of Congress — but even if they don’t, the GOP majorities are likely to be reduced down to a bare minimum.

micah: Republicans control all three branches of government, most states, etc. — I’m just very resistant to any argument that they’d rather the world look any other way than it currently does.

nrakich: I do think this question is incomplete without knowing how 2018 turns out.

natesilver: And 2020.

micah: You are all basically saying, “We can’t answer this question until it’s answered for us.”

natesilver: Let’s take what’s maybe an easier case. Let’s say Republicans lose in a wave election in November — they lose, say, 45 House seats, plus lose the Senate. Then Trump also loses in 2020 and they lose another 5 Senate seats or so.

Is it worth it then?

micah: I think the answer to that question is … yes.

natesilver: Yeah, I think that’s wrong, Micah.

clare.malone: Yeah, that would be bad.

The Senate loss is a little far out, though.

natesilver: Democrats will just undo the GOP’s tax policy.

nrakich: Micah, you think Republicans would take a teensy list of policy priorities in exchange for undoing all the electoral progress they’ve made for the last eight years?

micah: First, I don’t think it’s a given that the Democrats reverse that tax bill.

Second, I think that GOP progress was always fleeting, Nathaniel. See thermostatic point above.

You’re basically telling me that we return to a 2009ish-type government, but that the Supreme Court is conservative for at least a generation or so.

If I’m subscribing to the false idea that these elected officials and their voters want to win elections to achieve policy/ideological outcomes — which I am for this convo even though it’s not really right — then that last conservative majority on the Supreme Court is incredibly valuable because it’s really the only branch of government that doesn’t sorta inherently swing back and forth.

Control of the White House and Congress is always temporary, so I’m not super fussed about losing the gains I’ve made.

nrakich: But the alternative under President Clinton is that you lock in Republican control of the House for probably 10 more years and the Senate for perhaps a generation.

micah: I don’t think we know that.

natesilver: Are you reading too many liberal hot takes about the Supreme Court? The Supreme Court has already been conservative for many years. What would give the Democrats the best chance to make it not conservative is to have a majority of senators *and* the presidency.

micah: I haven’t been reading any takes — I just got back from vacation.

Now it’ll be MORE conservative!

natesilver: Would Clinton have gotten her justice appointed in a 52-48 Republican Senate?

micah: Probably not?

clare.malone: A more moderate one, yes.

micah: Wouldn’t she have nominated Merrick Garland?

clare.malone: Maybe, but maybe not.

micah: I have a hard time imagining Republicans confirming any Clinton nominee.

clare.malone: Clinton was never going to be able to nominate a Ginsburg type from the start.

natesilver: In FiveThirtyEight canon, she would have gotten Garland appointed on Earth 2, but in exchange for a bunch of Republicans being appointed to the cabinet.

But here’s the thing. With Trump in power, Democrats are probably going to end up with somewhere between 47-52 Senate seats after this year. Obviously a reasonably wide range there and I think they’re underdogs to take the Senate, although it’s competitive.

By comparison, though, if Clinton were president, where would Democrats end up? I haven’t done the math in detail, but I’d guess somewhere in the range of like 39-45 senators. They’d be in a lot of trouble, as Nathaniel said.

And they wouldn’t have had Doug Jones win that race in Alabama (in part because there would have been nothing to appoint Jeff Sessions to.)

nrakich: Yeah, in the Senate, Democrats are way overexposed in 2018 — a bad cycle for them could lead to the loss of 8+ Senate seats. There are 31 red states and 19 blue states in the U.S. — that means that the GOP “should” have 62 senators. If that scenario comes to pass, partisan gravity is going to make it very hard for Democrats to get back to a majority until party coalitions change, which can take decades.

natesilver: If you’re down to, say, 42 senators, you’re going to have a lot of trouble getting a liberal Supreme Court nominee for the foreseeable future, no matter who is president.

micah: OK, so yeah, let’s take this full on from the Democrats’ perspective: Would you rather have a President Clinton?

clare.malone: I think yes, you’d rather have Clinton. micah: Couldn’t Clinton have locked in a moderate court, though?

clare.malone: Not necessarily, Micah.

nrakich: I’ve been an electoral hipster on this topic for a while. Back in 2015, I wrote a semi-tongue-in-cheek article arguing that Democrats should cede the 2016 election to Republicans because Democrats need to rebuild their bench on the state level.

I mean, this is all hypothetical. But under a President Clinton, Republicans would win most of the governorships and state legislatures this year and in 2020. That would allow them to draw Republican-friendly House maps for all of the 2020s.

clare.malone: What if she wins two terms and Ginsburg retires when Democrats are in a better place in the Senate?

nrakich: It’s very hard for a party to hold the White House for four consecutive terms.

natesilver: There’s probably no universe in which Democrats would ever have had both a Senate majority and a President Hillary Clinton.

She’d have started out at 48, lost a bunch this year.

Then maybe you gain a couple back in 2020, which isn’t a bad map for Democrats.

But then you’re back in 2022 and midterms don’t usually go well for the president’s party.

nrakich: What do we think Clinton’s approval numbers would look like if she had won? My guess is they’d be pretty close to Trump’s right now. She’d have no policy wins to show off (since Republicans would control Congress), and those Republicans in Congress would be stirring the pot over her emails and other stuff, presumably.

micah: My first thought on this was … If you’re a progressive, and you care about an equitable society, the environment, health outcomes, etc. — I’m not sure there’s any argument that you’d prefer President Trump to President Clinton.

The only counter to that is if Trump sparks a generational counterswing — in which the next 5-8 years are bad for you, but the next 30 are good as a result.

natesilver: But presidencies always spark a backlash. That’s a given, or at least pretty close to it. The questions are (i) how soon the backlash comes, (ii) how big it is, and (iii) what Republicans accomplish before the backlash.

micah: That’s my point, Nate. I think it’s only “worth it” for Democrats if the backlash is historically huge.

natesilver: See, I disagree, because I think Trump’s accomplishments have been on the modest side.

clare.malone: One good thing for Democrats under Trump is the new bench that they seem to be developing.

natesilver: I mean, the party was sort of running on fumes.

clare.malone: In the long run, improving their prospects on the state level might serve them well. I’m not sure that would have happened under Clinton. They might have continued to paper over the state losses under Obama.

nrakich: Exactly, Clare. After a President Clinton, what would have come next? They’d be out of gas, and then you’d have a President Trump (or similar) in 2020/2024 anyway, plus you’d have missed your window to affect redistricting.

natesilver: Although — one thing we’re neglecting to mention here is that there’s a lot of damage Trump could do, e.g. to America’s international image, that isn’t really a *partisan* concern per se.

micah: That’s what I was typing!

It’s not just “accomplishments.”

It’s the whole Trump effect.

The illiberal stuff.

natesilver: But again, that, too, could spark a long-term backlash.

clare.malone: Yeah, the Trump reflection on the country in the eyes of the world is sort of a known unknown.

How much is it going to screw the country long term?

natesilver: And also, having a President Clinton (as Rakich was getting at) may have led to a Trump-type Republican getting elected in 2020, only with much bigger majorities in Congress.

clare.malone: Other countries might not trust our word on international treaties we want to make, etc., etc.

nrakich: America’s image bounced back pretty well from the Bush years, right? Although I think this is another level than that.

clare.malone: I dunno re Bush.

micah: Yeah, opinion of the U.S. (and the American president) shot up after Bush — and has dropped back down under Trump:

natesilver: Yeah, I don’t think this is comparable to Bush.

micah: OK, what if Trump leaves America 20 percent less democratic (small d)?

natesilver: Although, I also wonder if our allies sort of recognize that Trump’s an outlier instead of the permanent state of affairs.

nrakich: True, but I also wonder if he confirms what they secretly thought about the U.S.

clare.malone: Why would they not assume that another Republican president would now take policy positions more like Trump’s because that’s what Republican voters want?

nrakich: But then again, European allies are also dealing with their own Trump-like, anti-immigrant, populist figures.

micah: Yeah, it would be a mistake to think of Trump as an outlier.

natesilver: What if Trump sparks a backlash to populism in Western Europe because people associate populism with Trump?

micah: I sorta buy that.

Well, no … I don’t.

natesilver: There’s already a little bit of evidence of that. Populist candidates generally underperformed their polls in Western Europe in 2017. Eastern/Central Europe is a different story, it’s very important to say.

micah: To start to wrap this up … clearly most congressional Republicans are still happy with the tradeoff, no? (To shift the convo from what we think to what they think.)

nrakich: … are they?

Not to be a broken record, but you keep hearing about how, off the record, lots of Republicans say they’re fed up with Trump.

natesilver: Given how many congressional Republicans retired, the prima-facie evidence might be “no.”

nrakich: I bet plenty of them would take a President Clinton right now so they could try over again in 2020 with Mike Pence or someone more palatable to them. Plus, congressional Republicans were good at being the opposition party under Obama. They could have kept going with that. It was once they started needing to govern (i.e., with health care) that they sorta fell apart.

micah: If that were true, wouldn’t they be more forcefully rebuking/restraining Trump?

clare.malone: Maybe they’re waiting for the midterms to be over.

nrakich: I don’t think they would be, because they’re afraid of getting Sanforded.

If they’re ever going to break with Trump publicly (barring a major Mueller development), it would be in the time between this year’s primaries and this year’s general election. So I guess it’s too early to tell.

natesilver: Micah, I don’t think that necessarily follows. One thing about being a Republican in Congress is that it’s politically hard to oppose Trump, even if you think he’s terrible for your party and the country in the long term. Maybe that’s why so many of them are retiring.

micah: That’s partly true, but I also think much of the media is projecting when they imagine all congressional Republicans hate Trump.

They didn’t all retire, after all.

natesilver: And you know what really wouldn’t be fun? Having the same dilemma if you’d lost control of Congress anyway, which is probably more likely than not this fall.

(Of course, this is a bit self-fulfilling; one reason the GOP is favored to lose the House is because of all the retirements.)

micah: OK, final thoughts?

nrakich: This is how I see it:

Under President Trump, Democrats have a good chance to win back the House in the short term and be competitive in it throughout the 2020s (because of redistricting). In the Senate, they will probably maintain their small deficit in the short term but remain competitive in the long term. State governments are likewise competitive again for a decade or so. In the Supreme Court, a conservative majority is achieved and lasts an indeterminate amount of time.

Under President Clinton, Republicans would have kept/augmented their House majorities this year and drawn district lines to make it very hard for Democrats to win the House again until 2032. In the Senate, they would blow Democrats into oblivion with the bad Senate map in 2018, and the Senate wouldn’t be competitive again for several years either. In the states, Republicans likewise lock in control for another 10 years. And in the Supreme Court, Democrats get a liberal-to-moderate court for an indeterminate amount of time.

Your mileage may vary, quite a bit, for how to weight those. But I personally think the Clinton presidency one is the better scenario for Republicans, and the Trump presidency is the better scenario for Democrats.

I will now go collect my contrarian card at the front desk.

natesilver: I wouldn’t go that far. I mean — the default, certainly, is that you’d rather win the presidency than lose it. I do think, though, that it’s far from obvious that Republicans are better off with Trump and that people who think it’s obvious don’t have enough of a long-term view.

micah: I think it’s obvious.

THE LAST JEDI REVIEW AND SPOILERS GALORE

Ok folks, just got back from my viewing of the last jedi

under the cut SPOILER GALORE, I repeat SPOILERS GALORE

Overall, it was a fantastic movie, finally a truly GREAT star wars film after the lackluster TFA. It is a marvelous anti-war film, an intelligent movie, an ORIGINAL film, that had something to say, that had complex characters all around the board, my god why is JJ taking this back and dumbing down 9 when everything is so fucking great and well written and original

and it is a multishipper’s wetdream

however, oh boy you thought the fandom is horrible now, lol, we were summer children, the fandom is gonna be batshit from now on and it will be a shipper bloodbath, tumblr will drown in shippers blood

anyways without further ado

so since i know most just want spoilers , i’ll just do a clinical recap of the movie and then for those interested my feelings about it, and there are lots

Reylo is onesided on kylo’s part and could be seen as real but it will definitely never happen on screen, and will be relegated to fanfiction (which i am very ok with). Their bond and relationship IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC THO and wow, just wow, i’ve never seen such a balanced, complex relationship written between a female and male characters of equal strength, of equal power and with an equally devastating past that just make them all the more tragic. It is fanfiction ambrosia but with a very bleak ending, so be warned. and for this Rian thank you so much, i hope other writers take fucking note

Damerey is real guys, this is the craziest, damerey might have a shot at being endgame actually(i’ve always shipped it so i’m happy)

Finnrey is real and strong (AND WAS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL) and might have a shot at happening in 9 but it might also end up being friends and may be replaced by

Finnrose that could also be the final endgame for Finn

Kylux is fucking real as well, Kylux is gonna rise after this film

And we have a fantastic rebel OT4 that will carry on the star wars saga but yeah the skywalker line is gone tbh

OK RECAP / SORRY FOR THE TYPOS

As far as i can remember, Rey is gonna be on the island for the first part trying to get Luke to train her, while Luke is very unwilling to

Kylo was reprimanded by Snoke and because of it leads a campaign to kill the last of the resistance, wants to kill Leia but can’t because mommy ( these two, MY HEART, they had no scenes, i’m so pissed). however his fleet succeeds in bombing leia’s ship but the force save her and she’s in a coma and is replaced by admiral holdo

Finn wakes up, is afraid for rey the whole movie and meets Rose just as he wants to escape. then both him and Rose talk with Poe to find a way to infiltrate Snoke’s throne room and blow it to pieces. they go on a mission to canto bight to get DJ so he can help them get into Snoke’s throne room

Poe is given a lot more to do in this film and his arc is fantastic and a great coming of age kind of way to become a true military leader. he comes against holdo’s way of doing things without having the big picture

Rey tries to sway Luke into becoming the hero of the resistance again and finally gets him to train her but while she’s alone on the island the force bond between her and kylo starts to manifest and they start to have conversation ( ACTUAL DEEP CONVERSATIONS ABOUT THEM BOTH, THEY’RE SO ALIKE BUT REY MAKES THE GOOD CHOICES WHILE MY TRASH SON FUCKS UP EVERYTIME)

anyways, Rey doesnt tell Luke about those bouts of conversation with Kylo through Force bond and learns from Luke why Kylo failed him, and Luke tells him what reylo peeps have been sayign to that damn fandom the whole time. Snoke targeted Kylo because Kylo had a lot of darkness in him, han didnt know how to react aroudn that and leia put Kylo under his care and Luke tried to train Kylo but he realized that Snoke won all along as the darkness in kylo only grew more and more and one night he went ot his room and realized how dangerous he would become and kylo woke up and destroyed the temple

however through another force bond convo, kylo tells rey that luke lied and that he was sleeping when he woke up and found Luke tryign to kill him whit his own green lightsaber and then his power went in overdrive and he destroyed the jedi academy

rey confronts luke and luke confesses that the night in question he went to kylo’s room and realized he was too dangerous and ignited his saber as his first instinct was to kill him but then he came to his senses and only felt shame to want to kill his nephew but too late as kylo woke up and thought his uncle tried to kill him and went dark phoenix style like int he xmen and destroyed the academy

such a fucked up family, anyways

there is a gaping hole under a cave in the island and it’s kind of a force well that pulls you and is filled with dark side, rey is attracted to it and after Luke’s final story on kylo goes into the well to know what it’s all about and there comes the greatest, freakiest, force scene ever

and then we seen rey and kylo talking in the infamous hut , sharing their loneliness, and they touch hands through the bond (CRAZINESSS) and rey tries to bring kylo to the light, he’s tempted but luke crashes literally in on them and the bond is cut, and luke and rey fight (reverse blue saber scene in the storm scene) and rey tries to persuade luke to go to kylo and bring him back to the light so they can defeat snoke at ast. Luke says kylo is too far gone so rey offers him the anakin saber so he can come with her and help with the resistance. luke refuses so rey goes with chewie on the falcon to try to get kylo back to the light, but for her there it’s only to use his turn to the light to defeat the resistance.

meanwhile, the FO has the las ship of theresistance surrounded as it is only surviving thanks to its shield but it’s running low on fuel so Holdo is commanding an evacuation, Poe discovers the evacuation and is against it as he wants to fight and orchestrates a mutniny but Leia wakes up and stops his mutiny and finishes the evacuation, as their plan is for the resistance to survive to be able to fight another day isntead of going into suicide missions that have no tomorrow.

Holdo stays put in the ship as last resort as everyone evacuates, and FINALLY A FUCKING DISCUSSION BETWEEN TWO WOMEN. Star wars finally passes a bechdel test for the first time in its history ever. it’s beautiful to see thoe two badass female war general veterans talking together and sayign their goodbyes before Holdo makes the ultimate sacrifice.

Finn and rose infiltrate the FO huge ship while Rey infiltrates the same ship after sending chewie to hide away with the falcon. she is met by Kylo and his guard of stormtroopers to bring her to Snoke. they are in an elevator ALONEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and that CONVO IS FANFICTION GOALS, and rey tries again to bring Kylo to the ligth while calling him BEN, (you can die now reylo peeps) and sayign that teir shared vision when they touched hands showed her that he would turn to the light. but kylo says that he too has seen her and she’s the oen to turn in his vision and he has seen who her parents is

Finn and rose are betrayed by the DJ dude (benicio del toro) aboard the ship and are arrested and brought to Hux and Phasma

Luke is fucking lost mentally and is saved by YODA appearing as a force ghost and delivering the msot beautiufl message of the film, that they were the old gen and they have to pave the way for the gen, and let the past and old structures go to build new ones upon it ( HEAR THAT SW FANBOYS). and yoda also tells luke to stop beating himself down, that yes he failed ben, but failure is the biggest teaching experience and he has to learn from his failure to rise harder and stronger (like the fucking greyjoys) and that rey is the new jedi hope

Snoke welcomes Rey and Kylo into the throne room and kylo bows, he’s uber strong and tells rey to give her luke skywalker’s whereabouts so he can defeat the last jedi and have darkness reign upon the galaxy

rey refuses and asks ben to turn to the light as she has seen the cracks in kylo’s darkness (also here snoke says that he thought rey was a skywalker but apparently is not so REY SOLO and REY SKYWALKER HAVE BTH BEEN FOUD DEAD IN MIAMI BEACH) . Snoke laughs as he says he knows everythign about kylo and exploited that chunk in his armor to use the force bond so he could bring rey to him and kylo here looks up, surprised and betrayed (Dude gets fucked up by everyone he thinks kind of cares about him). then rey tries to fight snoke and escape and calls for kylo’s saber when she is surrounded by guards and the anakin saber is taken by snoke but snoke takes kylo’s saber away from her and it falls near kylo.

Snoke gets into rey’s mind (the rey toture scene) to get luke. kylo looks conflicted but doesnt do anything. snoke then laughs and turns rey to kylo so he can kill her, essentially telling rey that kylo has no will and will do anythign snoke says. kylo picks his red lightsaber and acts as though he will kill rey but uses his hand behind his back and the force to turn the anakin lightsaber that snoke had put beside him and ignites it effectively cutting snoke in half ( i was udnerhwmlmed at how easy it was to kill snoke after he showed he was more powerful than both rey and kylo)

then REY AND KYLO FIGHT THE SNOKE GUARDS AND IT IS AMAZIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG REY IS A BADASSSSSSSSSS

AND THEY SAVE EACH OTHER AND I WANNA DIE

but now is where it goes to shit for the kylo redemption as he will not be redeemed. Rey is ready for her and kylo to escape and help the resistance who is fighting still the FO ships but Kylo tells her that they shoudl let everything burn and rebuild from the ashes, this is where he says let the past die thing to rey (SOFT FUCKING VOICE AND ALL) and asks her to join him so they could rule together

- (which is kind of understandable on his part as he has been betrayed by everyone in his life, so rebuilding from scratch is his way of surviving and being free of all the pain that has paved his life because he was always kind of seen as a threat to be eliminated by his own or a tool to be used by his predator mentor or an obstacle to be dealt with with hux- this is not woobifying, the dude has had a fucked up emotional life, added to him being weak emotionally and making all the wrong decisions every fucking time. kylo is so relatable it hurts, but in the way no one wants to admit) -

you can see then Rey beign really distraught because you know she wont come with him and i think she is them mournign the kindred spirit she coudl have had with him and she feints giving him her hand and calls the her lightsaber instead but kylo understand her move and calls the lightsabe rback to him so the saber is stuck in the middle of both their outstretched hands pulling in their direction with the force

and then Holdo drives the last resistance ship into one of the FO ships that were attacking the evacuating pods while the resistance goes to crait to fall back there. the blast makes rey and kylo fall and anakin saber is cut in half but Rey takes both of the parts of the saber and escapes leaving kylo who got knocked out.

And this helps Finn fight Phasma and the fights i kinda too short lived but he beats her and then escapes with Rose who is just the ultimate BAD ASSSSSSSSSSSSS

Hux finds kylo in snoke’s throne room and is about to shoot/kill him but he Kylo wakes up and takes on snoke’s mantle and becomes the new supreme leader and he’s pretty much gone all full dark side, even worse than vader as everyone he wanted left him or betrayed him so he wants everyone and everything dead.

then the resistance hides in a cave in crait and behind a huge metal door but Kylo orders the FO to go to crait and kill everyone

poe and finn and rose go on the resistance kinda old tie fighter to try to shoot the big FO metal killer bazuka (the scenes of the rebel squadron tearing red lines on crait), however they’re losing a lot of people so Poe learn his lesson from Holdo and Leia and asks them to fall back so not to,lose more people but finn does not want to let the FO win and wants to sacrifice himself to shoot the FO weapon but rose save him in extremis, kisses him and falls into a coma from her wounds

then they all fall back into the cave and try to find a way out while Kylo and the FO continue to attack the door that keeps them safe, kylo is all the way gone now, he doesnt even care about leia. while rey gets back into the falcon and taers some FO ships apart and finds the rest of the resistance that were blocked behind a wall of rocks

and then we see Luke astral project and appear in the cave to talk to leia and it’s very emotional and they talk about kylo and leia resigns herself to accept that her son is gone so luke tells leia to save her people while he will try to save them

leia and poe and finn, and rose and the rest follow the salt foxes and come against a wall barring their route but they are amazed to see rey lift all those rocks with the force and save them and they all board the Falcon to escape after REY AND FINN HUG IT THE FUCK OUT, PEANUTS ARE BACK

meanwhile Luke gets out of the crait cave to face the FO alone and kylo orders them to kill him but he survives and kylo then tells the FO to stay put and goes to face luke alone . they fight and Luke says that he will always be conflicted even though he kills him just like he killed his father, this enrages kylo who slashes through luke but we discover it was a projection. luke stayed on the island and projected himself into crait and then dies of too much use of the force

as rey and everyone board the falcon rey stays behind and looks behind her, she feels kylo get in the crait base now deserted and there is a last FORCEBOND MOMENT where kylo looks up imploringly to rey but rey loks back with pity and then close the falcon door on their bond

Aboard the falcon, Rey FINALLY meets Poe in the falcon and SPARKS FUCKING FLYYYYY and it’s pretty much the cute deleted written scene in TFA and those two have hearteyes for each other so yeah.

then Rey watches as Finn covers Rose who is still knocked out and as he watches over rose. Rey smiles as she watches finn with rose and them Liea comes to her and the SECOND GREAT BECHDEL TEST PASSSSSSS with Rey telling leia she felt luke go but he’’sin peace and asking leia how they can build a resistance with just them and Leia says it’s more than enough and the rebel OT4 and leia will become the big resistance HEROES

So, GREAT FILM, blows TFA out fo the water a thousand times over, written perfectly, KYLO is definitely the big bad and he has kind of to die and that’s why it will be the end of the skywalker line. TV writers, like all of us, are developing a love-hate relationship with Zoom

Every week now seems to bring news of another Hollywood project being delayed. Sometimes this is because you can’t make money in an empty theater, but it’s just as often due to production halts in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. While most of that industry hits pause for now, one crucial segment has not—the writers. Like many of us, they’ve instead become intimately familiar with the inner workings of on-the-job Zoom calls.

“I kind of feel for every aspiring TV writer at home right now due to the pandemic,” said Sera Gamble, showrunner of Netflix’s You (formerly of Supernatural and The Magicians), during this year’s online-only edition of the ATX TV Festival. “They’re trying to write while doing a bunch of other stuff; well, congrats, you’re now in showrunner training. I’ve frequently had to sit down in the past and rewrite a script in a moment that felt like a severe crisis, and sometimes it was a severe crisis. But it feels like that times 10. I have to reset expectations every morning: I wake up, wait a minute before checking my phone, check in with loved ones, and then take the problems of the day as they come… [I tell my writers] ‘You can’t solve what you can’t solve, so what can we get done in the next hour?'”

For this late-addition panel to this year’s ATX TV Festival, Gamble (virtually) joined Dan Goor (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks and Rec), Melinda Hsu Taylor (Nancy Drew, Lost), and Beth Schwartz (Sweet Tooth, Arrow) to take streamers “Inside the Writers (Zoom) Room.” For some, the change came abruptly. Hsu Taylor and her staff had nearly completed both writing and production on the latest season of Nancy Drew when suddenly they had to convert everything to be remote-friendly (she credits doing a Zoom birthday for her son around that time for helping her grasp the basic logistics and experience). Other writers started wholesale in a digital world, like the staff of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. They were five weeks into story-breaking at the time of this panel and hadn’t been together in-person at all while working on the upcoming season eight.

No one had a choice, of course. As COVID-19 continues to surge in the United States—the country passed the 2-million-case mark within the last two weeks—all walks of life must adjust. And when any in-person interactions come with potentially life-threatening risk for the foreseeable future, suddenly Zoom calls sound downright preferable.

“Right when we went home, there was a little bit of a relief,” Gamble said. “We were social distancing in two separate rooms for weeks before we went home just so people could have six to 10 feet between them. At one point, I asked a writer’s assistant to track how often ‘coronavirus’ was said—it was every two minutes. So at least if we went home, we’d be able to work.”

The work

Logistically, certain things have been trickier for TV writers in this shared Zoom existence. Larger writers’ rooms pushing 10 people or more may have difficulty translating into a single Zoom chat, where not talking over each other and reading the room become harder. So, You and Brooklyn Nine-Nine now opt to have multiple, smaller Zoom calls focused on more narrowly defined tasks, and only the showrunner will hop between conversations. That magic writers often like to refer to—the creative spark, the inner-staff interactions where a lunch convo might solve a plot problem later that afternoon—has also proven harder to recreate in these digital work spaces.

“It’s more efficient, but it is weird and less fun,” Goor said. “There’s less joking around. We did every possible Zoom joke we could do that first week—changed all the backgrounds, mine was my mom’s water colors. We did background videos of each other… so I guess we found new ways to waste time, now that I think about… But it’s nice to feel a reaction to a pitch, and it’s much harder to do that over Zoom. I find myself talking myself out of story ideas.”

Early on at least, Zoom has also surprised writers with a few positive benefits. In writers’ rooms where some staffers have been with a show much longer than others, Zoom may take away some unspoken hierarchical barriers and put everyone on equal footing. “There’s something democratizing about these squares that are always present and equally sized,” Goor said. “For new people, it might be easier to speak up now. ‘Oh, and April, what do you have to say about this?'” Zoom also inherently leads to less workday interruption: fewer bathroom breaks, less losing the room to endless joke-offs, and skipping longer lunch routines like the Brooklyn Nine-Nine staff’s elaborate Wheel of Fortune-style approach to selecting takeout.

But perhaps the biggest change? The pandemic has given everyone in the writers’ room a more holistic perspective on life—episode four of season whatever no longer gets to be anyone’s most important thing. Add it all up, and many writers now have a much more traditional work day.

“Comedy hours are usually bad, and they’ve become so much better,” Goor said, noting how he now typically works 10am to 12:30pm, takes lunch, and resumes from 1:30p to 5:30p. “Routinely for the first few seasons, we’d eat dinner [in the writers’ room] and be there till 8pm or 10pm or 11pm for a table read. We’ve adjusted. It’s partly because it’s impossible to look at Zoom for that long, but it’s partly so people can be with their families, be healthy, and experience life.”

Focusing at home versus when you’re physically in a space for a specific task can be a new challenge, but these TV writers continue to find approaches that work for individual groups. Hsu Taylor and the Nancy Drew staff start each session with a three-minute meditation to intentionally tell their minds that work time has begun. “I know some people are checking their email because I hear clicking,” she said. “But I think most like this. ‘OK, I’m doing this now.’ I’m telling my mind and body to be here for the next few hours.” And some former tasks that would force writers to split their attention now don’t exist, like having to be on set for script tweaks during an episode you may have written.

“With production being down,” Schwartz said, “you can really focus on the scripts instead of being all over the place.”

Whether good or bad, our new reality has absolutely already impacted what we’ll eventually see on screen. You, for instance, centers on a bookstore manager creepily obsessed with an aspiring young writer. To put it succinctly, the show frequently has characters at least kissing. But for the upcoming season three, that may be one aspect needing to change, no questions asked.

“We can’t put people in danger—TV shows aren’t worth that,” said Gamble. “So we’ll change what we can and keep an eye on the lines we don’t want to cross. We won’t do the show and have it be shitty because there was a pandemic. We’ll be measured and try to maintain the spirits of the show. But it’s a conversation, scene by scene by scene.”

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitates shifts in logistics, too. Where you can film and who can you film obviously feeds into what scenes a writing staff can write. The writers noted productions in Canada and New Zealand, like Nancy Drew and Sweet Tooth, will happen first since those countries have navigated COVID-19 better than the US. And with mandated quarantine for travelers to those places, local actors could have a leg up for roles, too.

For Goor and the Brooklyn Nine-Nine team, new logistical concerns start with babies. No explicit spoilers, but two characters had one last season, and the team suddenly has to look at animatronics and maybe less overall on-screen infant time (“There’s going to be a run on those bespoke fake babies,” Gamble joked).

“It’s hard, because we’re doing stories on the work-life balance for these people. This goes in so many different directions and we still don’t know where [the pandemic] is going, so it’s hard to write for it,” Goor said. “Is it safe to shoot outside? Originally, we wanted everything to be a bottle episode, so we can shoot on the stages, [and] it’ll be controlled. But now, is it better to do all exteriors? Because it seems like it’s healthier and safer for people. How many extras can you have? Can you use kids? And since there will be waves of productions, with movies and pilots starting, too, availability for guest cast will be a lot harder. Five-episode guest-star arcs are now harder.”

All these decisions ultimately bleed into the business of TV, too. For writers, maybe the option of participating in a writer’s room remotely suddenly becomes more commonplace, democratizing the career for people outside of NYC and LA (and those cities’ sky-high rents). And not having to commute regularly or be in one physical space would mean writers’ rooms could welcome writers with physical disabilities more easily, thus bringing wider perspectives to a host of shows.

“I think there’s a reason we do [in-person writers’ rooms], and it’s not just to spend studio money on all that rent—it’s good for creativity and production,” says Gamble. “But it will be easier to say, ‘We should just meet on Zoom on some days.’ And for the disabled community, if an agent were to call and pitch me somebody and explain why someone could rarely or never be on set, well, I know that works now. If this all leads to a crop of great writers breaking into the business, that excites me.”

Hi there! If you haven’t already checked out writeblrconnections I would highly suggest starting there! You can fill out the form and submit it to officially become a part of the community and get access to their specific groups. I personally haven’t done this yet because I’m really busy with school, but they are a fantastic resource!

I’d also think about getting involved in NaNoWriMo. Don’t worry if you haven’t prepared. I suggest it because it’s a big community and a great way to connect with other writers!

And finally, if you interact with people’s works (reblogging them and screaming in comments/tags) you will most assuredly meet new friends. Don’t be afraid to reach out to writers (if they’re okay with it) through PMs or asks; just start with something like “I love X about your writing!!” and you’ll get something going. Just as a PSA: I welcome anyone to PM me or send in an ask and start a convo with me.

Ahhh, hello!! We’ve all been there and I’m honestly so glad to see you’ve come here for advice! Anyway, here’s just a little breakdown of how roleplays work in tumblr!

First, pick what kind of rp you want to interact in. Appless rps are ones with a small application to fill out that usually requires no writing for proof of literacy, ‘skill,’ etc. These rps are ones I frequent, and you can search for them HERE. You can also try semi appless, which has a wait-list for acceptances but is not as grueling to apply for a full app rp, or a skeleton, which gives you the basic features of a possible character and allows you to flesh that out yourself. Now, full app rps are sometimes a pain to apply for, but they are full of matured writers (lots of the time lmao you’ll always find a few. messy ppl) and last, usually, the longest. The longer/more difficult the application process, the more likely it is that this rp is here to stay.

* Indie rping is completely separate from this equation and all of the above I’ve spoken of revolves around a set group. If you’d like a briefing on Independent Roleplaying, then come back and I’ll explain that in the depth it deserves! I don’t rec indie rping off the bat of your experience, as it can be elitist and toxic. Four-five years ago, when I started tumblr rping, I stuck with appless and app rps and then transitioned into Indie. It helped a bunch!

Second, go through the tags and find one that interests you. Check the plot page, the rules page, and basically everything under the ‘before application’ segment. If you decide to go through with a certain rp, see if they’re open or not. If they aren’t open, then they haven’t reached their set application amount and you’ll have to wait for opening before you start rping. Seeing as you’re new, maybe that’s actually a good thing and will allow you to come back and ask questions/flesh out your muse before opening!

Third, you pick a faceclaim. Most rps suggest an 18+, actor/actress. This is because you’re going to want to go on tumblr and search ‘[fc name here] gif hunt’ and collect small to medium sized gifs of your faceclaim! Actors have good use of their face and plenty of gifs, most of the time. Static icons are also perfectly fine, but moreso an indie rp trend and not a group rp trend. You’ll use these alongside your writing in threads (aka the back and forth reblogging of an rp convo) to help not only capture your character’s reactions, but just remind everybody that your fc is cute and !! should be loved !! The race of your character should coincide with the race of the actor/actress you use; do not race bend, do not twist the actor’s minority traits into majority ones for ease of writing/preference (again, race, but also sexuality aka no gay to straight, gender aka no transmale to cismale, and so on).

Fourth, flesh out the lil bits of your muse (or the whole backstory and everything, but I start small and develop him post-opening out of lazy preference) and apply! I’d stick with non-anon, but, if the rules/ask header says you can do anon apps, you can go with anonymous applications!

Five, make the account. Once you’ve had an accepted app, the response will give you a set time range to give in an account before your faceclaim is reopened. Now, you have to make a personal and singular account for this muse and send it into the main. Avoid garden themes and pick something simple and quaint. You can go on the blogroll of the blog and see what the other characters are using for themes and find one via credit, which I used to do all the time!

Six, send it in. You’ll send another ask from that character blog you just made to inform them that you will be rping for your muse on that blog. You’ll be accepted and can interact or wait until opening to do so!

Seven, plot a lot !! Once it opens for interactions/plotting, you should make a teeny intro post stating your name and alias and leave some bullet points on your character under a read more! Make sure to contact other rpers in the group and try to plot out how your two characters could know one another/have more complex interactions. This could be wingman/woman/person, best friend, fwb, etc! Plotting makes a world of difference! Also, don’t force-ship, aka seeing an fc you really like irl and trying to act out one of your ‘wild fantasies’ of being in a ship with that face and then proceeding to throw your character on their’s. Seems like a given, but every Selena Gomez FC always magically falls in love with Harry Styles and it’s old af. It’s tired b and I want you to have to a1 rping game okay. You’ll do great!

Eight, have fun!! If you lose muse, you lose muse!!! Don’t beat yourself up about it and just know that rping is a hobby and a stress reliever; you owe nobody anything, dear, and having a good time is all the rpc should be about for you.
