I recently commissioned the wonderful @pyxchta to do an illustration of Ashley and @amongtheembers's Valerie being flirty little shits and it turned out just so good. The photo of the print doesn't do it justice, the colors are beautiful and the linework is so delicate.

I've got it framed and it's going up on my office wall. (I took pictures of the framed picture, but there was too much glare. I'll try again later tonight when I can control the light better.)

Pyxchta was a joy to work with on this project. Extremely thoughtful with a good eye for detail, very communicative, and just seems like a lovely person in general from our email exchanges. Would recommend everyone looking for commissions to work with her when she opens commissions back up.

Now if you don't mind, I'm going to stare at this great illustration off and on for the rest of the weekend.

Never will I stop with the steadfast notion that folks in the DPXDC fandom should interact with at least some form of canon DC media.

There are comics, tv shows, radio dramas both old and new, podcasts, movies, magazines, so much shit that intentionally avoiding the media is simply preventing yourself from spawning new ideas and gaining a new appreciation for a fandom that you’re already in.

The Superman Radio Show has episodes 11 minutes long. A lot of the TV shows don’t have episodes that surpass 30 minutes and most are nearly fully clipped on the official DC YouTube channel. The amount of fan made motion comics is astounding. The amount of fanmade animations is equally as incredible.

A year on from asking this question, I'm snickering a bit at the irony of the answer now that I've backed Moz's Kickstarter for a physical copy of Nix of Nothing.

If you having read Nix yet, go read it on its site. It's good. And if you like it, maybe hit up that Kickstarter. Or don't. I'm not your dad.

Question about your 15 Pages or Less post. Are there any special considerations you're making with an eye towards an eventual print or other compilation version? With each chapter being an inconsistent number of pages would add some sort of filter to make sure the chapters each start on same page face, or have you planned around that from chapter to chapter to know where you page turns would be? Thanks for taking the time to read and answer these, I love digging into artist's processes.

I used to wonder if I should worry about all that, but the rarity with which I can actually get something in print means for me it's just a lot of unneeded stress.

Dang, being nonhuman really is just like being trans, where I look back at my life and go, "Ohhhhhhhh, so THAT'S where it came from." It's easy for me to fall into the habit of thinking, "Well I just found this new label but I don't want it to infiltrate my whole life." But... it already has. All those moments pretending to be a cat on the playground, making fake "dog packs" with my friends, wrestling with my dog and laying next to her as if I was just another pup, attaching to my dog and cat stuffed animals, making dog-like noises to supplement my words, pretending I had (and still have) a tail to wag when I wanted, shaking out my "fur" and huffing just because I "liked mimicking my dog"—those were all my nonhumanity shining through. Me identifying with the nonhuman/therian label isn't an outliner, it's just the trend.

Back here again with my unpopular opinions (aka me being silly), but I don't see "love" being the main motivator for some of Vegas' or Pete's actions post-canon.

There's this trope in romance stories, as far as I can tell, of people committing heinous acts out of love for their partners, and I'm sure the VP fandom sees that as something VP would do - I've read fics with that concept, mostly either Pete or Vegas getting kidnapped and the other saving them, and I love some of them, I have no problem with the trope and it being applied to VP.

However

I believe the key motivator of VP protecting one another or, for lack of a better phrase, becoming monsters for the sake of the other is desperation, not love. Specifically, desperation to hold on to that fragile reality they built for themselves through literal blood, sweat and tears.

(Even during canon, like, Pete shooting the main family guard when he shot Vegas was, besides an act of fury, an act of desperation. He had *just* managed to save Vegas from death and suddenly, all his efforts were rendered useless.)

And it's funny to say that when Vegas kept insisting and will keep insisting Pete should leave him, but to me, what I said above applies here, too:

Pete is desperate to protect Vegas and their little family from everyone else. Vegas is desperate to protect Pete from himself.

#don't get me wrong here folks #VP love each other #(even if Pete will never say it hehe)#I'm just saying it's a little more complicated than that #which most VP fans already know but still #this is the second time The Shape of Water has given me Pete thoughts it's not cool #I want to finish the bloody book not soak in it for reasons that aren't directly related to it #(though I do appreciate the brainworms thank you)#vegaspete #meta post #when the love is there but so is anxiety #and both get combined and guide your ill-advised actions #or something like that

Another commission piece, this time by Olie (link to his Twitter) and it looks amazing. It's Ashley and some of my friends' D&D characters: Kiro the dragonborn bard, Shale Dom the human swordmage, and Ryosuke the human paladin.

Like the one by Pyxchta, I got this printed and framed as well. I had already commissioned some portraits of these same characters (by the wonderful @whimsicalparadox) a few years ago, so I decided to hang them right next to one another.

You can definitely see where some of the designs have changed over the years.😅

Funny how, as we enter our second week of triple digit temperatures here, there are suddenly concerns about actual MLB players having to play in this weather with no roof when the A’s move here next year. It’s just such a stark reminder of how we divide people into categories. Minor leaguers along with all the ballpark workers do it every year, but fuck those folks apparently.

#i’ve been to river cats games #where the temp at first pitch was 106 #and sure it’s by the river #so it does cool down in the later innings #but still #day games are a thing #also unlike some other places #later afternoon is the hottest part of the day #so say the game starts at 7 #it’s supposed to be 107 at 7pm tonight #and 111 at 5pm during batting practice #and the ground workers and concession folks have to work that too
