We impoverish God in our minds when we say there must be answers to our prayers on the material plane; the biggest answers to our prayers are in the realm of the unseen.

God brings you to places, among people, and into certain conditions to accomplish a definite purpose through the intercession of the Spirit in you. Your part in intercessory prayer is not to agonize over how to intercede, but to use the everyday circumstances and people God puts around you by His providence to bring them before His throne, and to allow the Spirit in you the opportunity to intercede for them. In this way God is going to touch the whole world with His saints.

Whoever puts his trust in me, as the Scripture says, rivers of living water will flow from his inmost being!” John 7:38
Our Lord’s teaching was always anti-self-realization. His purpose is not the development of a person— His purpose is to make a person exactly like Himself, and the Son of God is characterized by self-expenditure.
If we believe in Jesus, it is not what we gain but what He pours through us that really counts. God’s purpose is not simply to make us beautiful, plump grapes, but to make us grapes so that He may squeeze the sweetness out of us. Our spiritual life cannot be measured by success as the world measures it, but only by what God pours through us— and we cannot measure that at all.

The primary thought in the area of religion is - keep your eyes on God, not on people. Your motivation should not be the desire to be known as a praying person. Find an inner room in which to pray where no one even knows you are praying, shut the door, and talk to God in secret. Have no motivation other than to know your Father in heaven. It is impossible to carry on your life as a disciple without definite times of secret prayer.

We pray when there's nothing else we can do; Jesus wants us to pray before we do anything at all.

Looking for the Savior
Once there was a man whose life was one of misery. The days were cloudy, the nights were long. Henry didn’t want to be unhappy, but he was. By the passing of the years, his life had changed. His children were grown. The neighborhood was different. The city seemed harsher. He wasn’t happy. He decided to ask his minister what was wrong.
“ Am I unhappy for some sin I have committed?”
“Yes,” the wise pastor replied, “you have sinned.”
“And what might that sin be?”
“Ignorance,” came to reply, “the sin of ignorance. One of your neighbors is the Messiah in disguise, and you have not seen Him.”
The old man left the office stunned, “the Messiah is one of my neighbors?”  He began to think whom it might be.
Tom the butcher? No, he’s too lazy. My cousin Mary down the street? No, too much pride? Aaron the paper boy? No, too indulgent. The man was confounded. Every person he knew had defects. But one was the Messiah. He began to look for Him.
He began to notice things he hadn’t seen. The grocer often carried the sacks to the cars of the older ladies. Maybe he is the Messiah. The officer at the corner always had a smile for the kids. Could it be? And the young couple who moved next door. How kind they are to their cat. Maybe one of them…

What time he saw things in people he’d never seen. And with time his outlook on life began to change. The bounce return to his step. His eyes took on a friendly sparkle. When other spoke he'd listen. After all, he might be listening to the Messiah. When anyone ask for help, he’d respond; after all this might be the Messiah needing assistance.
The change of attitude was so significant that someone asked him why he was so happy. “I don't know,” he answered. “all I know is that things changed when I started looking for God.”
Now, that's curious. The old man saw Jesus because he didn’t know what He looked like. The people in Jesus’ day missed Him because they thought they did.
How are things looking in your neighborhood?

God came as a baby,
giving and entrusting Himself to me
He expects my personal life to be a “ Bethlehem.”
Am I allowing my natural life
to be slowly transformed
by the indwelling life of the Son of God?
 God's ultimate purpose is
that His Son might be exhibited in me.

It is ungovernably bad taste to talk about money in the natural domain, and so it is spiritually, and yet we talk as if our Heavenly Father had cut us off without a shilling! We think it a sign of real modesty to say at the end of a day—"Oh, well, I have just got through, but it has been a severe tussle." And all the Almighty God is ours in the Lord Jesus! And He will tax the last grain of sand and the remotest start to bless us if we will obey Him. What does it matter if external circumstances are hard? Why should they not be! If we give way to self-pity and indulge in the luxury of misery, we banish God's riches from our own lives and hinder others from entering into His provision. No sin is worse than the sin of self-pity, because it obliterates God and puts self-interest on the throne. It opens our mouths to spit out murmurings... "God is able to make all grace abound," then learn to lavish the grace of God on others.

There is no joy in the soul that has forgotten what God prizes. It is a great thing to think that Jesus Christ has need of me — “Give Me to drink.” How much kindness have I shown Him this past week? Have I been kind to His reputation in my life? Oswald Chambers in My Utmost

…you are that one’s slaves whom you obey… —Romans 6:16
You must yield yourself in utter humiliation to the only One who can break the dominating power in your life, namely, the Lord Jesus Christ.
When you yield to something, you will soon realize the tremendous control it has over you. Even though you say, “Oh, I can give up that habit whenever I like,” you will know you can’t. You will find that the habit absolutely dominates you because you willingly yielded to it.
Yielding to Jesus will break every kind of slavery in any person’s life.
