Letters from Osun-Oxum continuation of Communication Discourse Review of The University Scholars by Azurite
Im coming to you all with a requested input from the Osun-Osogbo Festival 2023. I have learned of Osun from multiple sources, one of many I paid no mind to due to the exploitative nature of these messengers. I am now working with Osun out of respect for the healing we have done collectively. We have a mutually beneficial relationship similar to how my relationship with Esu-Exu, and Ellegua started in Atlanta many years ago. We found a "scholarly" article written by a professor at a university in Texas named Joni L. Jones
and used this for a Communication Research assignment last semester as a way to make peace with xenophobia and exploitation of Osun's divine blessings by many indiviuals throughout higher education across the globe. We first were inspired by this work due to an article by a Nigerian Professor named Ahmed O. Adesanya, PhD whom wrote about Artifactual Code and non-verbal communication through the intricate beadwork in Yoruba culture. The PDF Link is Below.
A article that changed my lense of spiritual practice forever. I thought I can be a scholar and write about the things I enjoy such as beadwork and spirituality. Anyways... I decided to go on YouTube and look up the Osun-Osogbo Festival and watched a video; in this video a statue was shown that caught my eye and it would not let me forget about it. I immediately began to look up this statue and the ancestor in which this statue was of the first traditional ruler (1st Ataoja of Osogbo) in 1670 and ruled for a period of 90 years until his death in 1760, and he was mentioned as Larooye which happens to be a salutation to Exu in Brazilian Umbanda practices. This particular video with participants of the Osun-Osogbo Festival had interviews of people an one of our Nigerian professors from last semester got her undergraduate degree in Osun State. We aren't a fan of the woman she was very xenophobic and her energy made my nerve ending stand on edge, but we did learn a valuable lesson from her an that was you do not have to be born in Nigeria to have a connection with the ancestors of nigeria. Also Osun doesn't only work with people in Nigeria. Now I will always respect those born in the lands of the orixá but I also knew that for some reason Osun and many other Orixá chose me to tell their stories. I was chosen to get the truth out while also restoring the medicine to their chosen heirs that have been pimped out by colonizers and babalaôs for a long time. Osun despises one thing and that is kidnapping, slavery, pimp culture, and exploitation in all its forms.
youtube
If we look at the corruption of the Nigerian government and all its scandals in isolation grants Osun a whole lot to be angry about. People give this docile and only sweet persona of Osun, the way she has taught me an showed up is far from docile. Osun does not play about her space and is a stickler on boundaries. Osun will go to war for her loved ones and has been a healer of wounds new an old regarding human trafficking, slavery, and kidnapping. Osun in our opinion is one if not the most powerful orixá of them all. The concepts to take from this Hood Scholar Article is to use your knowledge of Yoruba & Igbo to dissect the Osun Festival as it stands today. It also is a challenge of why aren't more of the traditional leaders that statues still stand in the cities across nigeria not known more about to the devotees of Osun. Osun has become a global superstar over the last 10 years and very little is known about her true essence, what she stands for, and how she like to be treated. If you are going to call yourself a priest or priestess shouldn't you at least know the language of the lands in which Osun story originates ? The wealth and healing of Osun should be flooding the gates of Brazil, Nigeria, and the lives of her loved ones why is it being exploited for the pleasure of corrupted elites ? Im going to leave these questions there until next time. Its your homegirl Azurite and this is a Trapppland Exclsuive. Please make sure you cite me if you use my wisdom and any others of the scholars in your content. Thanks Osun for all you do, I love you -Azurite

The Yoruba religion (Yoruba: Ìṣẹ̀ṣe), West African Orisa (Òrìṣà), or Isese (Ìṣẹ̀ṣe), comprises the traditional religious and spiritual concepts and practice of the Yoruba people. Its homeland is in present-day Southwestern Nigeria, which comprises the majority of Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Kwara and Lagos States, as well as parts of Kogi state and the adjoining parts of Benin and Togo, commonly known as Yorubaland (Yoruba: Ilẹ̀ Káàárọ̀-Oòjíire).
It shares some parallels with the Vodun practiced by the neighboring Fon and Ewe peoples to the west and with the religion of the Edo people to the east. Yoruba religion is the basis for a number of religions in the New World, notably Santería, Umbanda, Trinidad Orisha, and Candomblé.[1] Yoruba religious beliefs are part of Itàn (history), the total complex of songs, histories, stories, and other cultural concepts which make up the Yoruba society.
The Yoruba name for the Yoruba indigenous religion is Ìṣẹ̀ṣẹ, which also refers to the traditions and rituals that encompass Yorùbá culture. The term comes from a contraction of the words: Ìṣẹ̀, meaning "source/root origin" and ìṣe, meaning "practice/tradition" coming together to mean "The original tradition"/"The tradition of antiquity" as many of the practices, beliefs, traditions, and observances of the Yoruba originate from the religious worship of Olodumare and the veneration of the Orisa.
According to Kola Abimbola, the Yorubas have evolved a robust cosmology. Nigerian Professor for Traditional African religions, Jacob K. Olupona, summarizes that central for the Yoruba religion, and which all beings possess, is known as "Ase", which is "the empowered word that must come to pass," the "life force" and "energy" that regulates all movement and activity in the universe".Every thought and action of each person or being in Aiyé (the physical realm) interact with the Supreme force, all other living things, including the Earth itself, as well as with Orun (the otherworld), in which gods, spirits and ancestors exist. The Yoruba religion can be described as a complex form of polytheism, with a Supreme but distant creator force, encompassing the whole universe.
The anthropologist Robert Voeks described Yoruba religion as being animistic, noting that it was "firmly attached to place".
Each person living on earth attempts to achieve perfection and find their destiny in Orun-Rere (the spiritual realm of those who do good and beneficial things).
One's ori-inu (spiritual consciousness in the physical realm) must grow in order to consummate union with one's "Iponri" (Ori Orun, spiritual self).
Iwapẹlẹ (or well-balanced) meditative recitation and sincere veneration is sufficient to strengthen the ori-inu of most people. Well-balanced people, it is believed, are able to make positive use of the simplest form of connection between their Ori and the omnipotent Olu-Orun: an Àwúre (petition or prayer) for divine support.
In the Yoruba belief system, Olodumare has ase over all that is. Hence, it is considered supreme.

ORISHAS IN THE IFA TRADITION
Orishas, also spelled Orisa, are natural forces or supernatural entities of the universe. These spirits are also referred to as deities or gods of the elements in the Ifa tradition of West Africa. They serve as conduits or intermediaries between humans and the Supreme Being (Olodumare) to benefit and help humans enjoy life.
There are innumerable Orishas in the Yoruba system and its derivatives. Some of the most popular Orishas are Orunmila, Eshu, Ogun, Obatala, Sango, Oya, and Yemoja. These spiritual forces embody elements of nature like the river, ocean, thunder, and wind. They are also linked to unique attributes such as wisdom, peace, love, health, and prosperity. Many people desire to connect with these beloved deities for these reasons and more.
COMMON ORISHA NAMES AND ATTRIBUTES
The following descriptions outline some of the major Orishas in the Ifa tradition and their attributes. Though keep in mind that these Orishas are revered in many traditions outside of Nigeria. And each society has its own beliefs surrounding the character and nature of these deities within their culture.
ORUNMILA
Orunmila is the Grand Priest of Ifa. He is the first Orisha to be reckoned with in the history of the Ifa tradition. Orunmila brought the wisdom of Olodumare (the Creator) to earth. The Yoruba people venerate Orunmila as a prophet of Ifa, the spirit of destiny, and Orisha of wisdom and knowledge.
ESHU
Eshu, also known as Esu or Elegba, is another prominent Orisha of the Ifa spiritual system. This deity understands all the languages spoken in the world and serves as a messenger between humans and the gods. As the harbinger of rewards and punishment, Eshu often instills a sense of fear or trepidation in some. He is known for his pranks, cruelty, unpredictability, and disruptions. Hence, he is often referred to as the ‘trickster god.’
Spirits of Africa Numerology Deck // Asanee 44
OGUN
Ogun is the elemental deity of iron, as he was a warrior during his sojourn on earth. He cleared the way for other Orishas to gain entrance to the planet using a metal ax and the help of a dog.
OSUN
Osun also spelled Oshun, is popularly referred to as the river goddess. Linked to purity, fruitfulness, fertility, calmness, and love, Oshun embraces the attributes of water. She also embodies human characteristics like jealousy, spite, and vanity.
OBATALA
Obatala is one of the most powerful and oldest Orisha in the Ifa religion. He is referred to as the king of white cloth as he is a tranquil judge. Greatly associated with forgiveness, honesty, peace, purity, and purpose, this Orisha is credited with the creation of humans.
SANGO
Sango or Shango governs the elements of thunder and lightning. He was once a king of the great Oyo Empire. And as such, Sango is one of the most revered Orishas in Yorubaland. The name Shango means to strike, and when annoyed, he brings thunder to burn the enemies or offenders of his children.
OYA
Oya is commonly known as the powerful goddess of storms. She comes before thunder in the form of lighting and is a favorite wife of Shango in some traditions. The name Oya means physical action or ‘she tore.’ Oya symbolically depicts the air that humans breathe as she can bring about life or death in the form of hurricanes, storms, or tornadoes.
YEMOJA
Yemoja is specifically a water spirit and is often depicted as a mermaid goddess. She is regarded as the mother of all the Orishas (deities) and the giver of life in the Ifa religion. She is believed to have originated from Tapa (Iganna) in the Oke Ogun area, Ogun State, Nigeria. Like Oshun, she is also known as a deity of fertility though her purview is the ocean rather than rivers. She protects sailors, dockworkers, fishers, swimmers, and others who travel by sea.
SUMMARY
As indicated, the Orishas in the Ifa tradition are innumerable. They are seen as the messengers of Olodumare, the Supreme Being. Each Orisha has its own distinct personality and set of characteristics that can be called upon to help guide an individual throughout life. Through offerings and rituals, individuals seek to honor and communicate with these powerful forces to receive guidance and direction.
As one grows in your knowledge and understanding of the tradition, one will encounter more and more Orishas. As such, one will grow and advance in knowledge about the character of these beings. And in turn, one can benefit from the many blessings and gifts of these sacred energies.

Azaigba to Tinubu: "Reintroduce Subsidy Unless Nigerians Won’t Be Able to Breathe Again. As Nigeria prepares to celebrate its 64th Independence Day on October 1, Professor Kenneth Azaigba from the Federal University Dutse has urged President Bola Tinubu to reinstate the fuel subsidy to alleviate the growing economic burden on citizens. In an interview on Sunday in Makurdi, the history professor stressed that reintroducing the subsidy could help resuscitate the struggling economy and reduce the harsh effects of current policies. Read Also: Give Tinubu More Time, Our Challenges Will Soon Be Over – Osun APC Chieftain To Nigerians Azaigba noted that the removal of the fuel subsidy, signaled by Tinubu’s proclamation that “subsidy is gone,” has contributed to the naira’s depreciation and intensified the hardship facing ordinary Nigerians. He argued that the problem lies not with the subsidy itself, but with its mismanagement, stating that no economy, especially one as fragile as Nigeria’s, can function effectively without some form of government intervention. Pay Attention To: Breaking: Bobrisky Sues VeryDarkMan for ₦1 Billion over Alleged Defamation [See Documents] “We cannot run an economy like ours without subsidies. The subsidy management regime has to be looked at. Electricity tariffs and fuel prices are unreasonably high, and without mitigating these, we won’t be able to breathe in Nigeria again,” Azaigba remarked. He called on the government to review its economic policies, emphasizing that they should be designed to not only stabilize the economy but also improve the standard of living for Nigerians. The professor expressed alarm at the rapid devaluation of the naira, noting its detrimental impact on everyday life. Reflecting on Nigeria's 64th Independence anniversary, Azaigba acknowledged some progress but lamented the country’s inability to fully leverage its abundant resources for economic growth. He concluded by calling for innovative solutions to Nigeria’s current economic crisis and urged a more strategic approach to national development.

DEAR TEACHER, YOUR REWARD IS NOT ONLY lN HEAVEN
You are about to read another True life story of a teacher in Osun state, Nigeria.
I was there in person that fateful day to conduct interview for some applicants.
Myself, the Proprietress and one elderly man who is also a consultant formed the panel for this interview.
When l checked the papers before me, l discovered we only had 8 applicants to be interviewed.
So, at exactly 9:15 AM, the interview commenced.
Written tests were first administered to all of them which only lasted for 40 minutes.
Immediately after this came the Micro teaching.
Then during the last session of the interview which was the oral interview, something happened.
All along, the proprietress' son too was around. He is just a young guy of 18 years.
In fact, he just gained admission into one of the state universities in the south west.
While the interview session was on, the 18-year old boy (proprietress' son) walked up to her mother and said:
Mummy, lf you really want this school to grow, make that man on a pink shirt the principal of this school.
Initially, the mother did not give due attention to the boy's admonition.
To her, she believed, what does an 18-year old boy know about school administration.
But giving it a second thought, the words coming from of a boy who is never an educationist also surprised the mother.
The proprietress ruminated on those words, especially the conditional statement which says "lf you want this school to grow..."
Of course the proprietress wants her school to grow.
This is a school with a little above 100 pupils in the primary and 90+ in the secondary.
The dream of every school owner is to see his or her school grow numerically.
So, we decided to give it a shot.
When it was this man's turn, he was thoroughly scrutinized.
Several questions were thrown at him while he gave satisfactory answers.
No doubt, we were pleased to make him the school principal.
But there was trouble!
This applicant in question only applied as a Mathematics teacher in the secondary school.
He did not apply for the post of a school head.
Although when we checked through his CV, we discovered he had function as a school head before.
To cut the long story short, the man who applied for the post of a subject teacher went back home as the principal of a school.
How did it happen?
The 18-year old boy saw this man among the applicants and easily recognised him as his one-time Mathematics teacher in the junior secondary school (about 5 years before).
On the other way round, the Man could not recognise the boy again.
Such is life!
Never expect that you must reap where you sow.
Your labour of love and dedication may not be really appreciated where you are right now but believe me sincerely, your reward will surely come.
Your reward is not only in HEAVEN, you will also get some portion of it here on EARTH.
