By • Olalekan Fagbade Students threaten to shut down University activities over School fees increment Students of the Obafemi-Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State have vowed to paralyse academic activities in the institution should the varsity management fail to reverse the 300 percent increment it recently put on their tuition fees. Though the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Abiodun Olarewaju, had said that the increment was agreed upon after an emergency management meeting last week, the students have said they would shut down the school if the decision is not reversed soon. The Students Union body of the school led by Abbas Akinremi-Ojo on Monday during a press conference said the students do not accept the increment. He said: “We’ve also written to all respective banks to halt the acceptance of fee payments from any student until a better resolution has been achieved. “As much as we don’t want to, we are currently running out of options and might have to shut down all activities on campus and progressively on all other federal institutions campuses in Nigeria because we are carrying the leadership of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) along. “The student leadership had met with the management in August when we learnt about plans to increase school fees and we started negotiating. “Unfortunately, they shut us out and announced the new fee. They claimed that the Federal Government has stopped funding OAU; meanwhile, the recent release on September 15th, 2023 listed OAU as number 9 of the top-funded universities with a budget allocation of N13.4B.” Similarly, the National Association of Universities Students, NANS, through its Chairman, Olayinka Popoola in Osogbo has warned other universities planning to increase fees. BOWEN UNIVERSITY SACKS OVER 100 WORKERS; SAYS DECISION IS NECESSARY TO SUSTAIN SCHOOL . The Coronavirus pandemic has continued to affect the country’s economy, leading to mass retrenchment. Bowen University has now joined the growing list of organizations downsizing to stay afloat. According to reports, the private university located at Iwo in Osun State, sacked over 100 workers on Tuesday, June 23. It was gathered that the sacked staffers received their letters of disengagement through email late on Tuesday. One of the affected staff said the school claimed that the economic crisis caused by COVID-19 pandemic was the reason for the retrenchment. The mass retrenchment is reportedly “generating tension on the campus” and some are threatening to protest the action. An affected staff said: “Over 100 of us are affected and we may resort to violence because the reason for the sack was not genuine. “The Vice Chancellor, Prof Joshua Ogunwole, recently bought a vehicle worth over N42 million despite the economic situation. So you can see that it is caused by wickedness and insensitivity.” University spokesman Toba Adaramola confirmed that the institution sacked some workers, including academic and non-academic staff. He said about 8-10% of the workforce was affected. He said: “The decision affected those in academics and non-academic staff. “In August 2018, it was discovered that the university is heading toward inflection point and the management deliberated on the reasons for the inflection. “It was discovered that change of culture was part of the problem.
