aoex spoilers but you know how fucking devastating it is reading ch 143 and osceola is explaining all the nuances and specifics about talismanic foods and ingredients to rin and it’s actually something he’s genuinely interested in and can grasp easily without making him feel stupid and it especially captures him because of his prior interest in food and cooking. and osceola and rin get along well and it gives osceola a chance to maybe even take on rin as an apprentice. and it would maybe give osceola a chance to find his footing in the world and in his identity again. and rin’s never really had someone dedicate time to teaching him personally since father fujimoto died so it would most definitely benefit him too. and then osceola dies.

Starting to catch back up on Blue Exorcist and man, Kazue Kato was cruel for this. I feel a little conflicted that Osceola got fleshed out as a character, and we finally got how close and meaningful his relationship with Lightning is only for him to die right after, but I think it works. Getting to know Lightning's origins after he made himself so mysterious for so long was so good. The way Osceola started to keep living for him because he was what made Lightning start loving the world just went to my heart.

What actually got me to tear up was Suguro crying because Lewin can't do it, this boy knows his teacher so well, and just like Osceola gave meaning to Lightning's life so did he for Suguro. Lightning's genuine smile of gratitude towards his student after he's emotionally vulnerable in his stead is so touching. His most valuable person is gone and he has someone there who just gets him and gives him the comfort he needs even if he acts like he it doesn't affect him.
