Tonight the Oscars are airing!
Do you like Star Trek?
Do you like Science Fiction?
Do you like fannish culture and history?
Do you like learning about history in unique ways?
Now is a GREAT time to come check out Galactic Journey. This Thursday, April 6th 2023, is the start of reruns of the entire second season of Star Trek The Original Series.
Watch the episodes as they would have been seen in 1968, complete with advertisements, no cuts, and unedited effects! The episodes air twice over Discord, to cover different timezones. Each week before the episode you can also hear readings from fanzines and articles that would have just come out.
There's dedicated zones to discuss the episodes from the perspective of '68, as if we are all gathered for a watch party or calling in over the home phone as we see the characters face new and exciting dangers with impressive special effects!
It should be noted that while people get into the world of reenactment and exploring history, it is still a space for everyone who wants to participate in good faith. Bigotry is not tolerated. Every era has had people who made space to respect and care about each other, and that's the energy we try to foster among ourselves.
You can read reviews of all the previous episodes over at Galactic Journey, along with reviews of other SF&F media. Find out what was going on in the world 55 years ago with articles, a radio station, and a weekly news video.
This fall season 3 will air, so now is the perfect time to catch up!

Oliver!, based on the 1960 musical Oliver! and Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist, was the 5th highest grossing film of 1968. It was a 2.5 hour high budget, big production musical, similar to most musical we've seen. The New York Times review was lukewarm about the film, especially towards the acting. The choreography and musical numbers were over- the-top, but the whole plot just seems weirdly drawn out. There's almost too much plot, as we bounce between a mix of storylines with their own set and main characters. It's a fine musical to see once, and I bet it's a great one for the kids. The Lion in Winter had some decent qualities. It introduces Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton in their first major film roles, and the overall look of it is nice, but I found it to be incredibly boring. It was based off of the 1966 play of the same name but seems to use this as a crutch. It's very rigid, minus the unnecessary and frequent establishing scenes of the war (?) and the water. While I'm not against films with a significant amount of dialogue, it's hard to keep interest when every conversation is about the same thing (Please papa, let me be king 🥺)
The Lion in Winter holds the only tie in Oscar history, with Katharine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand (of Funny Girl) securing equal votes and both winning for Best Actress.
Other than that, it was a pretty normal ceremony. Oliver! obtained 5 Oscars from 11 nominations, plus an additional Honorary Award for Onna White's choreography.
The two films split the top honors from the Golden Globes, but neither secured the BAFTA (which instead went to last week's The Graduate).
The Lion in Winter collected several of the top honors from other major guilds and groups, while Oliver! was often left heavily nominated but empty handed.
Both films are absent from the National Film Registry and AFI lists, but were recognized by the NBR (albeit, not the Top Film) and OFTA.
Unofficial Review: Weak pair of films, in my opinion, but still not an upset.

Aubrey Bearsley’s art was everywhere in the Black Lizard’s club (but then again there ARE resonances between the stories of desire/love/death of both Kurotage and Salomé, right?), and I suddenly remember I really really should lay a hand on a copy of Oscar Wilde’s Salomé with his illustrations… *sighs*

Movies I’ve Watched - 2024
280/?: The Lion in Winter (1968) - watched 9/30/24
The movie is full of great actors devouring the scenery, including a young Anthony Hopkins and a baby Timothy Dalton. The script gives everyone a lot of opportunities to deliver memorable dialogue, but there are some editing and directing oddities that keep this from being a truly great film. Still, worth it for the performances.
