Hi mtx hope you are doing well
what are your thoughts on last case? who do you think that old woman and who she is focus on is it amuro or conan? and what abt the baby is it possible for him to be KARASUMA ?!!
File 1126-1128 Review
Tumblr media
I think this latest case was very refreshing, similar to the Butler shinkansen case, where we revisited classic DC mystery themes and settings that aren't often used. You immediately get a classic kidnapping case with the added trait of a seemingly gory and highstake threat from the start through the reveal of a head in a jar (File 1126).
Tumblr media
The twist that the gory atmosphere was ultimately a fakeout is such a callback to the very old Ayumi kidnapping case (File 83), where the head she was stuck with was a prop as well. It was also a neat trick on how to create the illusion of a 3D head out of a 2D paper.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The trick of opening a lock with a mini-explosion using matchsticks (File 1128) was also quite genius and I hadn’t thought of such a way to actually work (as expected of Gosho).
Tumblr media
Another revisited theme was Masumi and her protective and watchful gazes against anyone with potentially ill intent towards Conan, which I always love to see more of. Her noticing Amuro's nosiness towards Conan (File 1126) took me immediately back to Yusaku cold case in Bourbon arc (File 814), where she started glaring the same way towards Subaru after he alluded to figuring out Conan's true identity discreetly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for whether her eventually revealing to Conan, that Amuro is investigating him (File 1128), is gonna lead to any actions from Conan's side is all up in the air. Since Conan already views Amuro as an ally, he most likely wouldn't be too concerned of it, since unlike his Bourbon worries in File 1009 (after his recent Kudo Shinichi publicity) he has no reason to suspect the BO is onto Edogawa Conan.
Tumblr media
One thing I somewhat got right was something I speculated in regards to one of the suspects that Ran and Sonoko found so familiar. I had speculated that Kanamaru was an employee who has worked in Poirot since before Amuro & Masumi intro, based on the clues that were given in File 1127 (Knowledge on behind-the-counter, familarity, etc).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was convinced, but mainly hopeful, that we were finally getting the reveal of the mysterious never-appearing owner of Café Poirot. It seems however unfortunately that, while the line of thought was correct, it was rather a former employee who covered for the owner when he was hospitalized in the past (File 1128).
Tumblr media
It was however cool to learn that Kanamaru had previously appeared as a background Poirot employee in the anime, making his general design and official manga debut pretty cohesive in the DC franchise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now... as for the important question of yours, who is the old lady that looked unique in how she appeared as a witness with a mysterious toddler in a stroller and who also appeared once again at the very end...?
Tumblr media
She is none other than: Karasuma Renya's mother pushing her shrunken Boss son in a stroller!!!
Jokes aside, she did pretty much catch every other fan's attention the moment she appeared and it was a running joke that the boss has finally made his appearance xD
As for what I really think, I'm not really entertaining the idea that the Boss would have first of all shrunken into a younger age than our main protagonist (a 7-year-old), since it would lose any air of suspending disbelief and start becoming more comical than serious (especially since a toddler boss would be too vulnerable as a threat). The old lady also looked quite generic for a character design, which of course doesn't need to mean she isn't important, but it does ultimately lessen the chance that she is a major player in the story. What I however entertained was the possibility that she could be another named, but unrevealed, old woman character in the story, who has the best timing to appear in this stage of the ongoing plot. I'm talking about Haneda Kohji's mother, Haneda Ichiyo.
Considering that Gosho is very likely already setting up the introduction of Haneda Yasuharu (Kohji's named father in the marriage registration in File 947) through the mystery of Vader (respirator elder), it couldn’t be more fitting to have the also-named wife being setup to get introduced in such a discreet way that once she eventually appears in association with Vader (assuming it's Haneda Yasuharu), it will leave a bigger and better impression on the reader than a simple worthless appearance of a new character.
As for her motives for appearing around Poirot Café, it could be that similar to Vader, who this old lady is actually being watchful of is neither Conan nor Amuro, but rather Sera Masumi. Vader has had his eyes on Masumi and Mary (which again fits with him being Yasuharu) and seemingly realized that Akai Mary has become a middle-schooler (File 1096), so in a similar fashion, this could be Gosho sprinkling in some hidden continuation of that plot thread, but with the twist being that Ichiyo (Kohji's mother) is trying to confirm her husband's (Vader/Yasuharu) crazy findings by borrowing one of her housemaids' baby as a part of her cover as a passerby, rather than glamorously appearing in a vintage/expensive car that shows her status of being from the powerful Haneda family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ending of the chapter had a sidenote mentioning that many premonitions were swirling around Café Poirot, which is ultimately enough that it is referring to what Masumi brought up about Conan being investigated by Amuro, but it could also indeed covertly be including the looming old lady literally outside the Café hearing the rom-com commotion inside. What is however the most exciting is that the awaited Osaka Heizuha likely-confession case in Naniwa has been teased even in the to-be-continued note to be the next big 5-chapter case coming in Aug 7. I can't wait to finally see more development of not only the main characters of this stage (Heiji & Kazuha) but also Rum arc's new stars of this subplot that have thoroughly been a joy to follow (Momiji and Muga).

One day at lunchtime, I was strolling around the Shinsaibashi area and happened to find a Western-style restaurant with a long line of customers. This restaurant is called Naniwa no Aji Shinsaibashi Meijiken. According to the restaurant’s website, it was founded in the first year of the Showa Era (1926), which means that this year (2024) marks the 99th anniversary of its establishment. I checked online and found that the restaurant was awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide Kyoto/Osaka 2017… I had no idea that the restaurant had such an impressive history and track record.
I heard that omelet rice is very popular at Meijiken. Speaking of Shinsaibashi, there is a restaurant called Hokkyokusei that claims to be the birthplace of omelette rice. Shinsaibashi is now a sacred place for omelette rice. If that is the case, it is as good as decided what kind of omelette I should eat here. One weekend, I went to Shinsaibashi to see what kind of omelette rice I could eat…

Episode 118: Naniwa Serial Murder Case
A serial murderer is loose in Osaka. Heiji invites Mouri, Ran, and Conan to come on an Osaka tour after having a disturbing dream about Shinichi getting stabbed. He makes them ride in a police car driven by Sakada-keiji, an insult to the sakura on his badge. While touring Osaka, Ran feels strange evil-eyes watching her. But it isn’t until eating okonomiyaki that the face behind the evil glares is revealed, when a strange young woman plops down at the bar beside Ran and Conan, and says, “You’re Kudo aren’t you?” Conan has a heart attack and a half, but it’s very quickly revealed that she’s referring to Ran, and she’s just Heiji’s childhood friend, who he got handcuffed to when they were younger. They keep special charms as a memento of the occasion. As they leave the restaurant to get back to the car, a man falls off the roof onto the hood of the car. He also has a knife stabbed through his driver’s license. A creepy woman gets really scared about it and drives away. This reveals the serial case to everyone, and Heiji and Conan launch their investigation. Soon they go to talk with scared lady. On their way there, Sakada calls her. She’s freaking out and says she’ll tell them everything. Then all the sudden, he realizes they already passed her apartment, so Conan and Heiji jump out of the car in the middle of a main highway. They find her dead in a public restroom. It is discovered that all of the victims have history together in a really weird driving school, where 20 years ago there was an incident where a driving instructor died from drunk driving. Heiji and Conan are split up when Ran shows up. Conan pouts, slouches, and whines all the way to the creepy abandoned shack in the woods all because he didn’t get to go with Heiji. But Heiji gave him a good luck charm, so everything’s okay. At the shack, Conan notices burnt receipts for bento boxes, and since nobody would eat bento boxes every day, he deduces someone must be delivering the food there. Then he finds dirt on a window sill, climbs on top of it, hops onto the ceiling using a move that defies physics, opens up a trap door, and discovers the serial killer in the attic. As the police take the serial killer away, he dives into a random pile of junk, and finds a knife, which he’s very happy about, and proceeds to attack Ran, but Conan dives in front of her, and is stabbed. Luckily, he was wearing Heiji’s charm, so it was only a scratch. This serial killer is not the real one however. It’s actually Sakada. Heiji confronts him in a shed, and he tries to take his own life, but there’s a struggle, and they end up burning down the shed. The fire waits patiently as Sakada tells Heiji his entire life story.

NOTES (Under the read-more because they got very long!)
I’m so sorry for this one, but it was the only way I could think to incorporate the joke here organically. The line reads “ナニワともあれ歌いましょ (naniwa tomoare utaimasho)”, Naniwa being Osaka’s original name, as well as the name of one of its wards. The pun here is that “naniwa tomoare” sounds a lot like “何はともあれ (naniha-tomoare)”, which means “at any rate/in any case”, so a more literal translation would be “regardless, Naniwa, let’s sing”.
A more literal translation of “looming all around” would be “forward-bent posture”.
Chayamachi is a popular downtown district among young people in Osaka’s Kita ward. The shops there sell various kinds of food, fashion and forms of amusement.
“Ame-mura” or “Amerikamura” (American Village) is another one of Osaka’s popular entertainment areas, this time in their Chuuo ward. Has many Western fashion retail shops, bars, and nightclubs.
“Okonomi”, short for okonomiyaki, which is Sasara’s favourite food. “Okonomi” on its own means “how/what you want” while “yaki” is “cooked”, so altogether it’s “cooked how you want”, referring to it’s versatile fillings. I think this is probably supposed to be a pun, but I wasn’t sure how to reflect that and Rosho carries on with the food naming anyway, so I went more literal here.
Kushikatsu is deep-fried meat and vegetables on skewers. Its origins can be found in Osaka, and both it and okonomiyaki are popular there.
Osaka was once called “the kitchen of the nation” during the Edo period, where many different kinds of food from all over Japan gathered due to the city being a warehouse and trading port.
This is a nice example of how these three use wordplay very effectively - Sasara says “ten-count”, written in katakana. Rei uses a word that can be read as “ten” (but isn’t, in this case) and Rosho does the same with “count”. Likewise in the line following, although Sasara doesn’t use the same word for “sudden” he does use onomatopoeia that essentially means the same thing, bringing the joke full circle.
“碌でもない” means “good for nothing/worthless”. “後光がさしてる” means “to be very thankful towards someone” (enough to make them look like an angel with a halo). I’m not sure I got the meaning of what Sasara’s saying exactly right, but this is how I’m interpreting it. I didn’t pick up on this myself, but someone pointed out to me how this section is in itself a count-down from ten - Rei and Rosho say 10 and 9 respectively, and then Sasara incorporates the rest of the numbers into his lines from 8 to 1. I have no idea how to make that look good in English though...
“Flour-food” refers to how most classic Osakan foods such as okonomiyaki and takoyaki are made with flour.
“Aren’t such a big deal” is more literally read as “how much is monjayaki worth” (なんぼのもんじゃい), the answer being “not much”.
“Kill the beat” (apparently a common phrase in breakdancing referring to being able to skillfully stay on rhythm) and “make some noise” are two different sentences in this line, but they both include a use of the word “hame” (はめ/ハメ) which, when put next to each other, is slang for “having sex”. “108 desires in all” is a reference to the Buddhist belief that humans have a total of 108 “worldly desires”, or polluted thoughts. “Worldly desires” is usually written as “煩悩”, however Rei uses “欲望” which also means desire but in a lustful sense.
A gold driver’s license is what you can get if you’re a “safe driver” in Japan with a standard license (you get points for driving violations, so only people with 0 points can get gold). Apparently these can occasionally get you discounts in hotels and shops.
This is apparently a popular slogan in Japan in order to discourage drunk driving, and according to one source I saw while investigating it’s been in use for over 30 years.
“Stuck in the same boat” is my loose interpretation of “呉越同舟”, which is the concept of working with someone you consider an enemy in order to achieve a common goal.
Rosho says “okami” twice in this line - or at least that’s how it sounds. The first is “okami (御上)” and means “authority”, so referring to the government/Chuuoku. The second is “ookami (狼)” which literally just means wolf, likely referencing Matenrou as the 1st Division Battle winners.
This gave me agony for ages, and to be entirely sure I’m still not sure if it’s right, but whatever. Tell me if you have a better alternative. I’m choosing to interpret “chop end-roll” as “cutting off before the end of a movie”, as “end-roll” in Japanese is how you refer to end credits, so I guess what Rei’s saying is basically “we’re finishing this now”. Also he uses “言の葉” for “words” which is also the name for the Party of Words - but he doesn’t actually say “party (党)” so I don’t think he was referring to them.
“Spirits” being liquors.
Chamisul and Makgeokki are both Korean alcoholic drinks. Also, I was informed that the line “Makgeokki’s here” (”Makkori ga kuru”) sounds a lot like “Maddotorigākurū”, which is “Mad Trigger Crew”.
So this gets interesting. The things Rosho says in both this and the next line are slurred, which gives them a double meaning - he’s saying one thing, but what they sound like are alcohol puns. In this case, “always/frequently (shotchū)” sounds like “shōchū”, which is a kind of Japanese liquor.
Here, “good and (iimo)” sounds like “potato (imo)”, which is something you can make alcohol out of. The same goes for “bare (mukidashi)”, the first half of which sounds like “wheat (mugi)”.
I’m a little vague on this one so take it with a pinch of salt. Rosho says “チュー輩” which is “chuu” and then “party”. “Chuu” isn’t exactly “Chuuo” and “輩” is the kanji for neither “political party” nor “ward”, but considering how drunk he is here I’m willing to believe he’s referencing Chuuoku. You’re free to correct me if I’m wrong though, I’m still very unsure.
Again, I’m really sorry for this. The joke here is that Sasara says “酒ては通れない (sakete wa tōrenai)”, which… doesn’t really mean anything sensical, but literally something like “alcohol can’t pass”. However, it sounds almost identical to “避けて通れない (sakete tōrenai)” which means “unavoidable”. So… un-alcohoidable. Haha.
Bonus fun fact; “okami” is also a reading of the obscure kanji “龗”, which (basically) means “water dragon”. However, as with most kanji, “龗” has multiple readings, one of which (kan-on) has it read as “rei”, just like “零” (Rei’s name). I don’t think it’s necessarily relevant to the song because of the obscurity, but it is an interesting tidbit.

PairPuri volume 8 Crosstalk
Akutsu Jin’s VA Sasaki Nozomu x Kite Eishirou’s VA Shingaki Tarusuke The two who play the most “bad” characters in the series will make their characters’ charm vividly clear while talking about that conflict and philosophy!
How were your auditions and first encounter with your characters? Sasaki: When I was invited to the audition, when I first saw a picture of Akutsu and a selection of his lines, I thought “what a scary character.” (laugh) Shingaki: I knew about the Prince of Tennis anime very early. At that time, I said something like “they have people to play such far off characters,” it was a very distant world. When I was invited to audition, I was surprised. “What, the anime isn’t over?” (laugh) I’m from Okinawa, so I thought that’s why they’d chosen me. When I saw the lines at the audition, Kite was speaking in a very standard way, it didn’t feel like Okinawan dialect at all! Sasaki: Then did you speak normally at the audition? Shingaki: Well, I thought if I spoke normally, it would lose meaning for me to be the one doing it, so I just changed the intonation. Normally, it would be like ~desu ↓, so I spoke with the intonation changed to ~desu↑. Up until then, readers didn’t think he had an accent, and when they saw the anime it seems they were surprised. “Wow, he has a strong accent!” (laugh) Sasaki: Hahaha, in my case, I thought of being given the role of Akutsu as a new challenge, and I played him in a way that was different than everything I had done before. I decided the range of my voice’s tone for myself and tried not to stray from that…. But with my lower limits for tone, there were times during recording when I would think “making my voice a little higher would definitely be easier” (laugh).
What’s the appeal of playing a villain like Akutsu or Kite? Sasaki: I didn’t think about it as playing a villain. People who see him probably think he’s a villain, but I don’t think Akutsu himself thinks he’s a bad guy. He sticks to his own justice. I wasn’t consciously playing him as evil or scary. Shingaki: I don’t think I was trying to play a villain either. I thought that Kite and the rest of Higa are clearly unique, so I was trying for something like that. They have a presence that’s like “we’ll do anything to win!” the voice actors for my teammates had the same thought. But truthfully, during recording, I planned to think of myself as the away team during recording. We got caught up in the feeling of being the away team, we played lines like “we’ll make them surrender” brimming with spirit...that was fresh. Akutsu is more of a lone wolf, huh? Sasaki: Now that you mention it, there aren’t many scenes where he talks to the other Yamabuki players (laugh). Shingaki: Wasn’t there a scene where he gives Dan advice? “Don’t follow me,” it feels like he’s pushing him away.  Sasaki: Dan is so much smaller, and he’s not the same kind of player as Akutsu, so he’s saying “your aim shouldn’t be me, it should be Echizen.” That’s his kindness. Dan is the only one he calls by his first name, Taichi. In that scene, Akutsu has lost to Ryoma and thinks he’s uncool, he’s ashamed and doesn’t want to recognize his own uncoolness, so he’s probably telling Dan “don’t come with me (who lost).” With Dan, I feel like we can see Akutsu’s humanity.
What about “afterwards?” Sasaki: Akutsu returns in New Prince of Tennis, but I think he thought a lot after his match with Ryoma. Akutsu isn’t a character who always appears in the story, but he’s come to encourage Kawamura and has showed up many times after quitting tennis. I’ve thought a lot about what he’s doing and thinking in the points between his appearances. Shingaki: I’m the opposite, I worry. In the OVA Another Story “Prince of Naniwa,” after the national tournament, everyone from Higa runs into Seigaku in Osaka on the way back to Okinawa and they have a pillow fight together. I worried about how to connect that Kite to the desperate battle of nationals. I ended up playing it without consciously thinking of that connection.
Please give a message for the fans!
Shingaki: First I’d like to say that I’m looking forward to the new beginning in New Prince of Tennis too! I’m happy that with this development we have even one more way to be involved, and I’m going to keep playing my beloved character when the time comes. I’ll do my best! Sasaki: The series I love has been powered up even more, and I’m truly happy to hear that Akutsu will also be active in this development. I hope there will be more opportunities to meet everyone, and I’m looking forward to the day I can play Akutsu again.
PairPuri Crosstalk Column [I couldn’t make out this word in the scans] with Kite, who is prominent in character songs! Will the teamwork Higa has showed awaken Akutsu to the power of friendship?
Sasaki:  At TeniFesta (TeniPuriFesta 2011 in Budoukan) everyone from Higa sang together, and it looked fun.  Shingaki: Right. There’s a song on Kite’s album Faith called Chuba Fighters where we all sing. It was planned for the five of us from the beginning, but we wanted to ask Shiranui and Aragaki’s actors Inoue Suguru and Kako Rion to participate too. Only the five of us were at the event, but we said selfish things like “can’t seven people sing it?” Our dream of singing it with everyone was realized on the album! Sasaki: I participated in the event, but everyone was teamed up with their schools, so I felt very jealous. I’d like to gather all 5 Yamabuki members and sing together next time. Shingaki: Maybe the time has finally come when Akutsu understands the power of friendship!

Oh snap. Annnnd cliffhanger.
What's one thing you noticed/realized about this episode that you hadn't before?
Tumblr media
Hunh. Well I guess someone at Crunchyroll was really crunching away at the subs for this episode, because they mistyped "Ishizawa" as "Iwazawa" in the subs twice towards the beginning. To be fair, "ishi" (石) and "iwa" (岩) both refer to rocks/stones and look vaguely similar, although that doesn't excuse completely mishearing it so ¯_(ツ)_/¯ The really strange part is that they get the blue name box subs correct ("Ishizawa") but in the same frame have Otaki's line say "Iwazawa".

Throwaway reference to Osaka Okonomiyaki Odyssey maybe...or perhaps just that Heiji told Conan he would have to come try Osaka’s okonomiyaki with him. ...I forget specifically how many times this has been brought up, but I feel like it was first mentioned eons ago. Maybe during the Naniwa Serial Murder Case?
On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate this episode?
I’m really impressed at this original case. Turns out this was written by Takahiro Okura, who in addition to seeming to have a ton of mystery writing relating credits to his name, also did Episode 829, 855, 936, Crimson Love Letter, and The Fist of Blue Sapphire’s screenplay.
Celebrate it!
Since I don't have access to a tablet and am too lazy to scan a drawing, have a (not exactly) summary haiku.
More clues located
A ten-year-old robbery
Seems to hold the key
Next Episode: Episode 968
Previous Episode: Episode 966

Hello MDX, do you intend to do a review of Movie 27? What are your thoughts on it? And by the way, what do you expect of the August Naniwa case?
I have not watched Movie 27 yet, since it's not available where I live, but if I have a lot to say about this highest-grossing DC film, I'll post something about it.
File 1129-1133 Predictions
As for the upcoming Osaka case, the main thing I'm definitely expecting is for Heiji and/or Kazuha to finally relay their romantic feelings to one another. It's gonna be a 5-chapter long case, so I do expect a serial murder, similar to Crimson School Trip (ShinRan confession/reply case), and of course, we can't have the Osaka duo appear without the Kyoto duo, especially after Momiji recently implied that she shouldn't wait any longer and start acting in File 1018.
Tumblr media
I also expect that we get more Muga development/hints about his character and past, especially now, when we're potentially reaching the climax of Momiji's romantic endeavor and where we will only be left with the main plot-relevant side of his to progress (like Iori's Public Security past with Kuroda and his potential big secret identity as the main antagonist of this arc). This could mean that we might also get Kuroda interactions in the upcoming case (whether as a flashback or not), which is always a treat.
Gosho alluded to the appearance of "an important person who has remained mysterious up until now" in the upcoming case, which is very likely to be Kazuha's mother. This will also mean that we will finally have the official appearance of Heizo, Ginshiro & Shizuka (Heiji's parents and Kazuha's father) in Rum arc (who as of yet still hasn't appeared since Bourbon arc), which is clearly overdue.
If Kazuha's mother is finally getting introduced, then we could also get Momiji's parent(s) introduced, which would also bring forth more Ōoka household dynamics reveals, potential Haneda family-relation development and Former prime minister exposition (that could further hint to that he is the mysterious Falcon Elder).
If Gosho wanted to high-gear into the main plot as the following case after this, then it's also possible that Gosho could have Shinichi get involved in the case to aid Heiji, which could potentially tip off any unsuspecting observers (like Iori) of Shinichi's whereabouts and start Rum's Shinichi hunt in the awaited Rum climax soon after this case ends. For now, we only have Heiji, Kazuha, Ran and Conan confirmed as the cast of the upcoming chapter (according to AC). We'll have to wait for more teasers, but couldn't be more excited for what's to come.

Skate practice at  Naniwa Ice rink Namba
Tumblr media
After speaking to my new coach in late March I began training there in April because in this case you usually have to join a coach's team to learn from them??? I think. Basically you can either take lessons during normal public skating hours and pay for the rink fee normally or you can do the alternative where you pay for a monthly rink fee and then at some point your coach would give you an envelope with how much you need to pay them.
My coach gave me a schedule of when I can come to training and since they normally give around 10-15 mins each time you go, it's imperative to go more than once since not only are you paying for a monthly fee you would also learn more since sometimes they do some team practive too. (This is also probably a much more expensive option riprip mysavings but hey I gotta live a little right? just for 4 months I tell myself haha)
They have A and B groups, B which I am in (level 4 and below). Most of the skaters there are kids but there are some mixed sessions that I have yet to go to and it's already feels intimidating. I will be going this week so maybe I'll update you on that then. Evening session are only an hour long but morning mixed sessions are 1h30. I live in Kyoto so it's actually impossible to make it there on time which is why I will be staying the night in Osaka as the price doesn't differ much if I stay at a cheap hostel or something.
At first I was nervous because I found out that my coach who does co-teach with another coach is actually the same coach who teaches Tomono Kazuki; a Japanese figure skater who is getting much more recognition recently. Being in the same rink under the same coach is very nerve-wracking! Especially because according to rumours he’s a strict coach..but after the first week of lessons passed I didn’t really have to worry about that. He actually asks if I understand what he's saying which I’m so thankful for because I didn’t always understand my previous coach. SMH
My coach finds it amusing not in a bad way when I lowkey fail and almost trip lmao. He’s very nice, patient and much more easygoing than I expected. I actually prefer him to my previous coach who I didn't like as much.
Although training is sometimes quite intense at this rink because there’s so many kids who skate really really well and can do double jumps already. Can we have a round of applause? HAHAH But I guess it also pushes me to practice more because I'm intimidated af LOL trying to keep up with everyone.
