i’m a pretty big fan of DC comics (specifically the movies because there are just so many gosh darn comic runs out there but i do my wiki research) and the characterization of diana prince/wonder woman is so all over the place.
i feel like i haven’t seen an adaptation of her character that really served her well, like everyone makes her super boring? i often see the criticism of captain marvel that she had no real personality outside of being a strong woman and i see that a lot with Diana in the DCAMU. like yes she’s a strong woman but I feel like there’s so much more that can be done with that character.
all of her dialogue in the dcamu movies was just really flat and boring. when she took center stage in wonder woman: bloodlines she made for a really forgettable character. i liked that they showed the lengths she would go in battle when she blinded herself to fight medusa but i had to reread my letterboxd review because i couldn’t remember that. i feel like the writing issue could be said for all of the dcamu movies, but they’re not available to watch on max anymore so i could be wrong.
i’ve seen most of the dceu movies (i am the strongest soldier i know) and i just found diana in any movie past wonder woman (2017) to be flat, repetitive, and radiate serious nlog energy. the entire crux of her character is that we the audience is to find her attractive, but god forbid we mess with her or she’ll beat us up. or when she said “i’m unlike any woman you’ve ever met” what about all the other female superheroes out there? she only works in a sort of male fantasy-only girl on the team kind of vibe. kind of similar to early black widow from the marvel movies but with only a little more agency.
i revisited justice league and justice league unlimited for the second summer in a row and i feel like the episodes where we get diana center stage are some of my favorites. even though i have my gripes with bruce timm and the writing of diana there too, i think diana works a lot and she could’ve carried her own series with a different set of writers.
as far as i can tell in the in jl and jlu (and the 6 issues i pirated from the sensational wonder woman) diana is levelheaded, kind, compassionate, incredibly headstrong, and genuinely smart. sometimes she prioritizes the brawn a little more than strategy but she was raised as a warrior and i feel like that could’ve been an interesting arc to explore.
i really hate how in every adaptation i’ve seen, they made all of the Amazons seem like heartless misandrists. like according to greek mythology, ortrera (the mother of the amazons) was raised in a world where women were treated horribly so she left and built her own world with other women so they could live in peace and train to be warriors. i’m assuming that ortera’s daughter hippolyta (even tho she died) is supposed to be diana’s mom. i think that the pressure of basically being an heir to themyscira could’ve been a lot of pressure for diana to subscribe to her grandmother’s line of thinking and been part of the reason she even left paradise island in the first place. also women were oppressed because femininity was seen as lesser and i would’ve loved to see femininity not be villainized and have a place to flourish on paradise island where they would be safe to express themselves.
the more i watch dcau shows, the more i can tell that they were made by men for boys and no one else. diana and shayera were sidelined so much even though they were probably the most compelling, at least to me. i feel like the audience was supposed to side eye diana because she grew up in a culture that was misandrist but didn’t take the care to explain with nuance why that was a problem.
time and time again we see people write diana to reject femininity and denounce her womanhood in favor of her strength to show she’s just as good as a man, but that sucks. she has the potential to be such an interesting character on screen if someone is willing to put in the work. and i especially hate that we only see her embrace femininity when she’s in a romantic situation with a man. we see her talk a lot about the deep sisterhood she shares with her amazon sister, but i wanna see it happen. i want to see her embrace the women on the justice league, have girls nights with her civilian friends, complain about work, just exist as a regular woman living in america.
i’m so sick of every adaptation of her character have themes tied to surface level gender politics because we’ve already gotten the same character a dozen times when the other two parts of the trinity are given so much depth. so challenge yourself, write diana like a human being!!! she is so much more then her gender

"Vanguard, always 10 steps ahead ..."
Traditionally, the term avant-garde is used to describe any artist, group or style, which is believed to be significantly ahead of the majority in its technique, subject or statements. In other words, avant-gardists are those who go their own way, Perhaps the best way to explain the meaning of avant-garde art is to use an analogy with medicine. The overwhelming majority of doctors in their practice follow the basic, all known and proven rules of treatment of patients. (Most painters also follow the traditional methods of drawing) A very small group of doctors and researchers experiment with radically new methods. Most of these new methods lead nowhere, but some people change the course of medicine forever. (Picasso and Cubism). The most experimental era in the history of painting and sculpture was the Italian Renaissance. The figures from the biblical holy family were presented in a completely natural way - a radical departure from Byzantine, even Gothic, works. In addition, nudity has become not only acceptable, but also the most noble form of images. German symbolist artist Caspar David Friedrich introduced his landscapes into a new form of romanticism. The real avant-garde was the work of Francisco Goya "May 3, 1808". The artist was very influenced by the events associated with the invasion of Napoleon. After the French Revolution, the artists began to experiment with landscape painting. The next avant-garde school was Impressionism, a movement that turned color decisions. Suddenly, the grass could be red, and a haystack of blue, depending on the perception and decisions of the artist. The first three decades of twentieth-century art gave birth to a wave of revolutionary movements and styles. First, Fauvism (1905-8) appeared, the color schemes of which were so dramatic and anti-natures that its members were called "wild beasts." Second Analytical Cubism (1908-12) is the most intelligent of all avant-garde movements - which rejected the traditional idea of a linear perspective in favor of a greater emphasis on the two-dimensional graphic plan. But the most iconoclastic movement of all time is Dada, founded by Tristan Tsar (1896-1963). The movement originated in Zurich in 1916, before it spread to Paris, Berlin and New York. Dadaists rejected the bourgeois values of fine art, in favor of a heady mix of anarchism and hypermodern innovations. Artists Dada invented performance and conceptual art, and Dad's successor was surrealism. In the 1940s, abstract art was popular in America. And in the 1960s the public preferred pop art. Andy Warhol and his commercial art attracted both celebrities, (Bordeaux, Minnelli, Jagger, M) and ordinary people. Artists are avant-gardists. Who are they? 1. Claude Monet. The first revolutionary modern painting 2. Ilya Repin. The first artist who captures on his canvas details of life in Russia. 3. Pablo Picasso. The greatest master of figurative and abstract art. 4. Marcel Duchamponer Dada and object art. 5. Andy Warhol - the greatest postmodernist. 6. Gilbert and George - living sculptures 7. Damien Hirst. The creator of death (the central theme in the artist's work). 8. Banksy is one of the best graffiti artists in the world. 9. Le Corbusier is a utopian architect of the cruelty king. 10. Frank O. Gehry is the greatest architect of the deconstructivist. The most avant-garde works of art 1. "Avignon girls" (1907) by Pablo Picasso 2. "Harmony in the Red" (1908) by Henri Matisse 3. "Nude, Descending the Stairs" (1912) Marcel Duchamp 4. The Black Circle (1913) by Kazimir Malevich 5. "Soft construction with boiled beans" (1936) by Salvador Dali 6. "Broadway Boogie Woogie" (1942-3) by Pete Mondrian 7. "Number 6" (1948) of Jackson Pollock 8. "Yellow and Gold" (1956) by Mark Rothko 9. The Blue Monochrome (1961) Willow Klein 10. "Unique forms of continuity in space" (bronze) (1913) by Umberto Boccioni 11. "Fountain" (urinal) (1917) of Marcel Duchamp 12. "Bird in Space" (bronze) (1923) by Constantine Brancusi 13. Merzbau (three-dimensional collage) (930-43) Kurt Schwitters 14. "Piercing forms" (1931) Barbara Hepworth 15. "The Cup of Fur" (1936) Meret Oppenheim 16. "Presidential Portraits, Mount Rushmore" (1941) Gutzon Borglum 17. "Horse" (bronze) (1950) Marino Marini 18. "Heavenly Cathedral" (painted forest) (1958) Louise Nevellson 19. "Dedication to New York" (exploding design) (1960) by Gene Tingely 20. "Untitled" (Stack) (Lacquered Iron) (1967) by Donald Judd 21. "A Thousand Years" (installation) (1990) by Damien Hirst 22. "Apple Core" (1992) by Claes Oldenburg 23. "Puppy" (plants, wood, Earth) (1992) by Joseph Koons 24. "My bed" (installation) (1999) Tracey Emina 25. "Light and Light" (conceptual art) (2001) by Martin Creed 26. "Controller of the Universe" (tools and wire) (2007)) Damian Ortera
It should be noted that all of the above works can cause you different emotions. All of them are completely different from each other in the technique of execution, style and message that the artist directs to society. Perhaps, this is the very yardstick by which it is so easy to distinguish true talent from lack of talent? ..

Ares to Otrera
In that moment, Ares hated Otrera for what she could easily do to him. Aphrodite had always been good at getting him to follow her plan but Ares knew that he was being toyed with. It wasn't hard in the least bit with the way she would smile at him or touch him. He knew, he just didn't know how to say no. But with Otrera, the promise of a nation where they both raised their children, strong and resilient warriors of the best stock, Ares couldn't resist the dream. It took only a second for him to see it in his head because he had dreamed it for how many centuries now? Why couldn't he just let the Amazon nation be exactly what it was meant to be without interfering? Because he wanted to be the father he had always wanted. Every time he came back was another attempt at proving his worth to them. So for OTrera to now dangle that dream over him without any idea of how much he craved it, Ares hated her. Tired of being a puppet on a string, he was done. Until she spoke again. Those words would never be spoken by an Amazon, ever. For a moment, Ares was taken aback, his temper instantly vanishing as he blinked into the branch of a tree. "Fuck you...No wait... I mean... Umm.... Fuuu....stubbo.....no....shit!" Outwardly, Ares rubbed the bridge of his nose as he tried to think. How often was he without words or action? He still wanted to throttle her but she wanted to be at his side? Where the hell did that come from? "I have always trusted you with the lives of the girls. Always and without doubt. No battle is won without trust. Trust me, Pallas will not as readily kill the Amazons if you are not at the helm. That is my twisted punishment. You being injured buys us time. Look for the fucking slave!"
---- Ares to Ortera written by Siren at Rise of the Immortals
