I spend a massive amount of time reading about AIDS, because when you study queer history you're gonna spend a lot of time studying AIDS, and when I spend a lot of time reading about AIDS, it inevitably leads to me getting stuck in a "I am furious at every single person who acts like covid is over, but I'm extra livid with the queer people who don't care anymore" mood.
Mad about government negligence and public apathy, time to post the Larry Kramer Plague Speech again.
And for Mr. Kramer's thoughts on COVID-19, before yet another person crawls into my notes to accuse me of being "insensitive" by comparing AIDS and COVID-19 (as happens every single time I dare to compare them):
"The current plague, he said, calls for its own Larry Kramer to bring the rage — against disease, against governmental failure, against the unfairness of death. It just will not be him. 'I wish I could be,' he said. “I don’t know how. I would like to have a big movement,' he added. 'But I’m not quite sure how to do that.'" - Taken from "Larry Kramer, AIDS Warrior, Takes on Another Plague"
Larry Kramer died in 2020 due to complications from pneumonia. I never want to put specific individual queer people up on pedestals, because everyone has their flaws, but I do still think about Larry Kramer's AIDS activism a lot. Some days it feels like I'm the only one who decided to scoop up his rage and keep it burning. I know I'm not, but fuck, man, "still has to be worried about covid" is a lonely demographic to belong to.

Teddy looked down the line of gondolas wondering how much he truly trusted that little cable holding them all suspended. Once he decided that everything seemed to be secure, he was able to look out across the valley below, twisting this way and that into the haze.

Forever obsessed with the Red Dwarf crew dynamic. They hate each other. They love each other. They hate that they love each other. They definitely don't like each other but they do care about each other. They feel something about each other and they don't know what it is but it is strong. They have the vibes of a dysfunctional family that meets at an awkward holiday dinner where everyone wants to leave. Or a group of bitter exes. Or a bunch of bachelors sharing a flat. Or a polycule on the verge of collapse. They're friends. They're enemies. They're found family. They're forced family. They're people they've met. They're all they've got. They're stuck with each other. There's no one else. Unfortunately. They'd abandon or betray the others in a heartbeat (or maybe more than one). They'd never leave each other behind. They'd miss each other. They'd come back and they'd find each other again and again. They can't imagine life without each other. Maybe they can. Maybe they don't want to. They're codependent. They're so lonely. No one knows them better. They fight with and fight for and hurt and tease and joke with and help and save and berate and celebrate and find joy with each other. The others mean nothing. The others mean everything. The others are like home.

I hate our shitty apartment and I can't stand our asshole neighbor, but I do know the names of all the plants growing around our building, and I've been watching the same birds for so long that I recognize specific individuals. There's a male cardinal who I refuse to name (because I won't name wild animals), but who I fondly refer to as "the Loud Boy." He just finished growing his feathers back after molting for the year.
My little container garden attracts pollinators and birds, and it makes this shitty living situation a little bit brighter. It's about the only thing that keeps me going some days, but it does keep me going.

[Image ID: Highway sign with two options: if you continue, it says "summer lunch program." If you take the Exit 12 left, it says "Teaching jailer certification classes in high schools. A car labeled Texas is speeding toward the exit. /end ID]
Sources for turning down the lunch program and for jailer certification classes in high schools
If you make any reply that blames or mocks random people who just happen to live in Texas, I'm cutting your brake lines.
