I was just gonna reply in the notes but my response got too long cause I don't know when to shut up so sorry followers.

@orangenottangerineart sure! This was like three years ago so some of my memory is a bit shot but basically our lab was focused on a biocultural analysis of child rearing in three small scale societies in Ethiopia and CAR (and if I remember correctly DRC) which were the Aka, Sidama, and Ngandu. So we kind of looked at how substance strategies (Sidama are agro-pastoralists, Aka are hunter-gatherers and I think Ngandu are horticulturalist but I remember the least about them), culture, and certain biological aspects influenced child rearing styles.

There was also a pretty big project our advisor was a part of that focused on the microbiome of breast milk (look up the INPSIRE project if interested) but I didn't have much to do with that.

My first year I basically bounced around on PhD or master students projects on data entry help but got to learn a lot from them on their various projects. Then in my last year there I worked on my own independent project that looked at parental soothing behaviors. So basically how fast are parents soothing babies, what behaviors are they using, how often are babies even crying, how does this all compare cross-culturally, and what's influencing this.

We got super far in it but unfortunately data analysis was too much for my undergraduate non-math knowing brain and then our research lab basically imploded (advisor became dean of arts and sciences, the only PhD student at the time dropped out because she had some trauma happen, the other PhD student who was basically on loan from a different advisor decided to step away because of all this) so it never got published RIP

Anyway relating back to the post at hand my first year there on of the master's students research projects focused heavily on alloparent behavior which is why this whole concept of using it as a word to describe parenting strategies is boggling to me.
