doomscrolling through rate my prof and either multivariable's gonna suck or it's gonna feel a lot like learning from my dad.
#for context: apparently the prof has quite the accent and some say she's not great with english (according to rmp)#which idk can't judge yet#but tbf the prof I'm working with in research lab also has an accent that's mentioned negatively in her ratemyprof review#and I understand her perfectly#perks of having immigrant parents and growing up in a very immigrant-heavy region is that I'm pretty chill with a lot of accents#(bonus points if they sound like my parents lmao#in that case I can practically fill in the blanks)#also people say she moves through the material fast and isn't great with the online platform/attendance is mandatory?#it doesn't seem too unfair-- I loved my last calc prof who also posted nothing online but ratemyprof hated her bc of that#just gotta make sure I'm front row at 8am sharp every class ig.#that'll suck but it could be worse#scared yet optimistic#college#os2.txt

Ok I'm sorry but why do native english speakers always refer to € as euro? it's euros omg like 5€ = 5 euros not 5 euro. Euro is the currency, euros is the monetary units. That's like someone saying 30 dollar instead of 30 dollars, for example.
I am a native English speaker technically, but I've lived in the Netherlands for most of my life so there's a caveat. I grew up speaking British English, but now my English has become very Americanized since American English is used internationally more (I almost never use British slang any more for example since nobody understands that shit outside the UK lmao) and obviously there's a big Dutch influence in the way I speak English too (I often speak dunglish more than anything when I'm talking to Dutch speakers)
I think from what I've seen English and American people tend to say "euros" plural, since you'd also say "pounds" and "dollars". I think Irish people often say "euro" singular, but correct me if I'm wrong. So it varies. I think the reason I say "euro" is because of the Dutch influence: in Dutch you'd always say "euro" singular when referring to the price of something. So a Dutch person would absolutely say "5 euro" instead of "5 euros" (I actually just checked my tags on the post where I was talking about currency and I switched back and forth in those tags lmao that's just how it is)
I don't think there's an objectively correct way to say it, and honestly I don't really care if "euro" singular is incorrect lol you understand what I'm saying so I think it's fine
#ask#my accent has changed so much as well. americans often assume I'm south african which is really interesting#i definitely made a conscious effort to lose my regional English accent and turn my accent more American#bc it's harder for non native English speakers to understand things like glottal stops and non rhotic r's#which are common in a lot of British English accents#dutch people are really really good at speaking English but since i was a kid when i moved here and most of my peers were children#with limited English. yeah#although my English accent kinda comes back when I'm talking to other native English speakers.#idk language is so complex and life becomes so much more enjoyable when you understand that linguistics#is meant to be descriptive not prescriptive#also id love to know why you assumed I'm a native English speaker since I'm pretty sure I've never mentioned that here#but i have mentioned living in the Netherlands#actually maybe i have mentioned it lol idk#or maybe you meant to say non native#i mean you weren't technically wrong lmao but I'd love to know where the assumption came from#also i do think it's important to be consistent in more serious contexts. if you're writinga paper or a grant proposal or whatever#then pick one#but idc that i switch back and forth in daily life i can't be overthinking the fucked up way i speak English at this point

I've been wondering this for a bit: For your username, are we crushing on the doves or are we physically crushing the doves?
we’re doing neither but physically crushing them is closer. my username is from a specific translation of ‘ode with a lament’ by pablo neruda, where they interpreted ‘presión’ as ‘crush’ to describe a group of doves - thus, crushofdoves was born.
the poem is included in the collection ‘Residencia en la tierra’ and the printing that i have with that translation is the 1973 edition!
tbh i picked this username when i wasn’t expecting to spend more than a month or two fixated in this fandom and here i am over a year later wondering if i should change it, or if it’s too late now and i’m stuck with it.
#esther.txt#i love my username tto be clear but i wanna change it up#also i can read and understand spanish pretty well bc my older sister is fluent#but i can’t speak it for shit my accent is so bad lmao

i often forget that southern dialogue in terms of grammar is very loose and wobbly and then i go into twitch chats and the streamer has a hard time reading what i wrote bcuz the grammar just makes so sense.
it’s so hard trying to write a coherent message super quickly when american southern drawl mushes words together without a second thought.
i’m so extremely sorry 😭
#one of my closest friends is from New Orleans and it’s very funny to see two different types of southern#his accent is what you’d expect from a deep south american and mine is more coherent but the sentences make no sense#i try very hard online to post stuff that’s understandable but it’s a battle lmao#i have to edit a post 10 times just for it to make sense#me and Google Doc Spelling & Grammar check DO NOT get along#i’m like right on the border of deep south land and Rich People land that the accent is just weird#my uk friend says i sound southern while my deep southern friends say i sound like someone from cali lol#and technically NEITHER are true#southwesterner problems i suppose

Aw fuck I just remembered everything that happened at work today
I better get a DAMNNNN good raise after all this lmao
#speculation nation#the fact that my raise is impending and is not currently defined may be affecting my willingness to help out extra#so yes i agreed to work an extra hour and a half today#and yes i scrambled to make 35 drinks in 15 mins bc manager forgot a catering order#and Yes i agreed to work a double shift and take over doing boba on another day so we can fire the problem employee#which Oh Yeah im still mindboggled by the fact that she was apparently being RACIST to international student customers!!!!!!#she didnt do that around ME. probably bc she wouldnt have gotten away with it lmao#not racist in the way of calling ppl slurs or anything but just. being really bitchy and unfriendly#and complaining about ppl's accents making them hard to understand. To The Customer.#& after this came to light one of our nonwhite employees admitted that it felt like this girl was weirdly unfriendly to her#& me n the manager felt So Bad for it#like we've been thinking about firing this girl. had already decided on it. but we were just waiting for a good time.#but this shit is just. not acceptable. so im glad it's come to light so we can Do something about it.#tomorrow will be interesting. im going to hear about it secondhand bc no way im going in Even to watch things unfold.#bc i have tomorrow off ❤️ and im gonna try to spend it relaxing#bc my next few days are... not gonna be the most relaxing lmao#it'll be worth it to get her out of here tho. good riddance.

How do I pronounce your name in french? 😅 I’ve been wondering for age because there are so many different ways to say this name in different languages. For example in English it is pronounced like ‘Paw-leeyn’ but in Norwegian is it pronounced like ‘Pow-lean-ah’ which I think is so pretty

i love reading about canadian french dialects that have specific slang as well as anglicisms. like, it scratches a Specific itch in my brain and reminds me of the process i go through when i use anglicisms when speaking irl due to spending a lot of time on the internet....
#not exactly the same process of language mixing ikno but i genuinely love canadian french#quebec french being the dialect i'm the most familiar with because i grew up reading the aurélie laflamme books and have been listening to#a lot of podcasts its author was invited in last year when i was revisiting these books#also asdjska back when i was in elementary school i would end up using quebec french expressions irl because of those books...#but with my parisian french accent.... lmao#anyway that's why i have a lot of affection for this dialect :')#and i love the way it makes to think differently... like i am in a specific mindset when i read or listen to quebec french speakers#again: it really does scratch that itch in my brain TM#don't understand ppl who make fun of the quebec accent btw. sorry for enjoying accent diversity i guess but i'm just built different <3#(in other words: the adhd won today and i'm currently reading wikipedia articles about french dialects in north america lol)#entries
