A Sure Thing

Riorson House was alive with activity. The relocation of the students of Basgiath left the rooms and halls teeming with people. People with freedom of different Quadrants to mingle. 

Entering the room, Violet was nearly hit with Garrick’s arm as he gestured wildly. Apparently, Bodhi had failed as his partner and Garrick was making it known he needed to rectify that mistake. All the while, Sloane Mairi and Dinah Halliwell teased as they waited for the next round of their Tyrrendorian card game to continue. 

Taking an unoccupied seat, Violet sat next to the person she had been looking for. She had expected her seating to draw his attention and yet Aaric continued to read. “Don’t you care?” She asked, deciding to force his attention. 

Looking up from his textbook, Aaric finally regarded Violet. “Don’t I care about what?” 

“That Bodhi calls Dinah ‘princess’.” Xaden had explained to her that Bodhi had always called Dinah princess. That despite her being a daughter to a General, she had no royal blood. Yet the nickname persisted all these years of their friendship. A friendship that was born when they both were mourning and wards to Duke Halliwell. 

“Why should I?” Leaning back in his chair, Aaric was the picture of boredom. 

But his look of apathy didn’t last long as Dinah’s laugh rang out in the room. Like a moth to a flame, his gaze turned to Dinah and his captivation was palpable. 

“Because she’s your….” Violet didn’t know the word for what they were. The rumors around them circulated regularly. Even before coming to Aretia, his frequent visits to the infirmary raised a few eyebrows. Violet herself had found them bickering in the stairwell between the Riders and Healers Quadrant. And now that they were in Aretia, they were inseparable unless other obligations pulled them apart. And that didn’t even cover how affectionate he was with her. Nor did that even consider their history. One in which Violet had a front row seat to since Cam talked incessantly about Dinah when she used to visit the castle. “Because she is your Dinah and Bodhi calls her what many people consider a term of endearment.” 

Removing his gaze from Dinah, Aarric analyzed Violet. Aaric figured this might have to do with her own relationship than his. Jealousy was an ugly monster and he wasn’t above it. He envied those who got to spend time with Dinah, who made her smile  and kept her safe when he wasn’t around. But this, this wasn’t a point of jealousy for him.  

So instead a smug grin settled over Aaric’s face.  “He can call her princess all he wants because I’m the only one who will actually make her a princess.” Feeling Violet’s shock from his declaration, Aaric enjoyed the satisfaction. “I don’t mind if other people recognize her station in life.”

“How can you be so sure?” Violet questioned disbelievingly. The optimistic perspective felt so unwarranted. But maybe it was the way of royalty, Xaden carried a similar surety. Maybe you believe everything will work out when you’re raised being told you can do whatever you want. 

Not needing to think of his answer, Aaric still took his time replying to Violet’s question. There were far more interesting things to do. Such as catching Dinah’s gaze as she consoled a fuming Sloane and winking at her. “Because it’s us.” Aaric’s voice spoke with the utmost conviction before chuckling at Dinah sticking her tongue at him. 

Finally moving his gaze back to Violet, Aaric regarded her dully. “Do you need more thinly veiled relationship advice or can I go back to studying?” 

Scoffing, Violet gave him an unimpressed look. As much as he can see through her, she could see right through him. “Studying physics or studying her?” 

“Funny, did you practice that in the mirror?” Standing up, Aaric closed his book. Walking across the room, Aaric stopped by the card game. Without saying a thing, his left hand cupped Dinah’s cheeks  squeezing lightly before placing a kiss on the top of her face. 

From her seat, Violet watched Aaric walk off with a satisfied grin as Dinah’s eyes followed him out of the room. “Yeah, definitely studying her.”

First Sight

Ghost hides his reaction effortlessly. The balaclava makes it easy. He's not one for romance or any form of relationship but he's intrigued by you. His eyes don't leave you for the entire conversation. He stares unblinking at you as you talk and interact with the team. He hardly says a word to you besides a few gruff words and grumbles. He would chalk it up to analyzing you or deciding if he can trust you if anyone was to ask but really he just likes looking at you. He won't admit that to himself... yet.

König meets you on a mission. You're the enemy... or at least you're supposed to be. He's ready to fight, and he knows he would win even with the bullet in his side. For some reason, one he can not even figure out himself, he just stares up at you as you stand over him. You weren't the one to injure him. It was your partner who's now incapacitated on the ground. He doesn't understand why you won't just take him out right here or as to why he won't get up to fight you. When you kneel down and reach out for him, bandages in hand he draws his knife. Although, he knows he won't use it. He finds himself putting the knife down as you shoot him a stern look and begin to bandage him up. "Was machst du?" He asks in a pained voice. "Helping... König" You reply and glance up at his masked face. His eyes widen in surprise as you say his name. How did you know? He'll have to ask you when you both get out of here.

Price sees you across the bar on a night out with his men. He's immediately struck by you. He's never seen anyone so attractive. Price doesn't date much, never having time or simply not caring at this point in his life but he can't help but approach you. He cuts Soap off mid sentence as he stands and strides over. You glance up at him with a smile that doesn’t just light up your face but somehow makes the entire room feel warmer. For a second, Price wonders if he’s said something ridiculous and didn't realize it. He feels his chest tighten as your eyes meet. "You’re staring, soldier," you tease lightly, a glimmer of mischief in your eyes, but the hint of softness in your voice tells him you're not just playing. Whatever he's feeling for you, you feel it too. Price clears his throat, trying to regain the edge of composure he's used to carrying. “Aye, just... wasn’t expecting you to be quite so... captivating.”

Kyle hears the sound of your keys scraping against the door handle echoing in the otherwise quiet hallway as you unlock your new apartment. You had just moved all your things into the usually vacant apartment right beside his. He stands there for a second just observing you. You look over at him and give him a polite, neighborly smile. He smiles right back, always the gentleman. For a brief moment, Kyle considers just walking away. It’s late, after all, and you probably have a thousand things to unpack. But there's something about your presence that keeps him glued in his spot in the hallway. He only looks away when your door closes. The next day you hear a knock at the door. When you open the door, Kyle is standing there. "Need a hand with anything?" Kyle asks, the words leaving his mouth almost before he realizes it. "I'm Kyle. I'm in the flat next door... number 208" He smiles and extends his hand. "Oh yeah... the man who was staring at me ominously last night" You chuckle as you shake his hand. He already knows he's going to really like you.

Soap is standing in the brightly lit aisle in the grocery store, browsing the different types of ramen. He never understood why there were so many. He feels a presence beside him, he turns to see you standing there, just as lost as him. “D’you have a favorite?” he asked, his voice warm, laced with a Scottish accent that immediately made you pause. You laughed lightly. “I usually just grab the cheapest one, but now I’m thinking I might want to actually enjoy it tonight.” He smirks and chuckles. His eyes drift to your clothing, taking you in. As his gaze lingered, he found himself a little too curious—wondering if you always got so caught up in small decisions, or if this was a one-off moment, like him. He has a desire to get to know you despite you having said very little to him. He moves slightly closer, smile on his face. "I heard there's a new ramen place just down the street. Maybe I should take you there instead. Maybe the choice will be easier" He looks at you, hoping you will take him up on his offer.

You're sitting in Cass' room, fingers tangled in her hair as Stephanie babbles on from beside you about her latest attempt to get the drop on the young lady who's hair you're fiddling with.

It's so similar to that dream you had what feels like months ago, except now there's the addition of Barbara in the room, and you're learning how to do this without some YouTuber explaining a single step slowly and over and over, this feels more like.... Your style of things. You're quiet, intensely focused on the four strands of hair trying to slip through your fingers.

Cass is equally silent as she watches you work through her princess vanity mirror, letting you do whatever you want to her hair as you both figure the other out in the silence you're filling between the other twos stilted conversation in the girly bedroom.

A strand slips through your fingers and you scowl at your own mistake, gripping the other three carefully as you attempt to straighten out the braid to continue, without saying a word Cass hands you a fine toothed comb and starts prepping a mini hair tie.

She knows what it's like to want to be a perfectionist and get everything right the first try, so that's why she'll never comment or draw attention to a mistake you might make, if Cass is learning to accept her own faults she wants you to as well.

When Bruce heard the youngest two had forcibly dragged you out of your room and into one of the living rooms he hadn't known what to expect, were you a willing participant? Just complacent? Angry? Fed up?

He looks for you, not running around like a headless chicken of course, that would be ridiculous and overkill. no he walks calmly until he finds you three-six?.... You're sitting in the floor around a coffee table that's been pushed into the center of the room, blankets thrown haphazardly off couches, drinks set on the expensive carpet like you're all uncivilized animals, you're calmly explaining something to the small crowd around you.

"-and so that's why botulism is actually a very effective way of assassination, you can inject something as small as one singular cubed tomato in a soup pot and poison an entire group of people. Better yet, it looks like food poisoning, or improper prepared food, a simple mistake. It's-"

You pause your words as you notice him in the doorway, head tilting as your eyes meet.

Dick, not noticing Bruce, raises a hand like this is a school lecture and asks you a question.

"okay, so how do I tell if I've been poisoned with botulism? And what do I do?"

You hum and reluctantly return your attention to the table, taking a large swig of your drink to whet your throat.

"First symptoms are cloudy thoughts and heavy limbs, heavy tongue or difficulty swallowing. If you progressively lose motor function or find yourself struggling to grip things you should first get on antibiotics and if you have access to it, an antitoxin. You're gonna need a blood transfusion from a non infected person most likely as well, depending on how far it's spread."

Jason leans forward and drops his elbows on the coffee table with a dull thud. "A blood transfusion for poisoning?"

Bruce clears his throat pointedly before you can answer, multiple pairs of eyes snap to him, (minus Cass and Duke, who'd been facing the doorway and seen him enter.) "if I remember correctly, if you're sick enough to need a blood transfusion you're most likely also paralyzed due to damage to the muscles in your body, yes?"

He slowly walks in the room and takes a seat at the table opposite you, it might be odd to talk about poisoning of all things but.... At least you're bonding with everyone?

Been thinking about Galacta knight and his use of fire. I've actually got a few headcannons about it if you want to have a read!:

So! I've actually got a whole system worked out for how I think magic in the Kirby universe might work, but let's just look at this goof first. *puts him under a magnifying glass*

To start, every mage has their own unique form of Energy magic. It's essentially their "default" manifestation of mana; the caster's most natural state of magic. It is generally seen as the safest type of magic to use, easily channeled through the body and moldable enough to use in a wide range of spells. As a bonus, its drawbacks are small, requiring a mage to burn through nearly all their mana reserves before they'd have to deal with any advirse effects. Galacta knight uses this type of magic for things like his energy swords and abusing the laws of nature by using his own mana as an ill advised substitute for sleep.

Some find their Energy magic limiting on its own, prompting research into other forms of magic to tie into their spells, such as elemental magic.

Fire magic, like all elemental magic, can be quite costly against its user if not used with caution. Every use raises the caster's body temperature, leading to sweating and eventual coughing. Abuse of the element will envitably cause minor to severe burns at channeling sights, depending on one's tolerance and overuse. It is important to time attacks and casts far enough apart from each other to allow the body time to cool down again. Some learn counter elemental spells to cut down on this recovery time—such as water or ice magic to counter fire—but such rapid heating and cooling is dangerous and harmful to the body.

Galacta knight is an incredible fire mage, having a natural aptitude for it, given his affinity. The vast majority of magic users are born, or soon develop, an affinity to a specific kind of magic. They're brought into the world with an innate understanding of that type, though it may take some time before they realize what it is. Galacta knight's being fire gives him a better tolerance to its effects than most. Even so, he is not immune, and manifesting blisteringly hot flames within one's core is, generally, unrecommended (nevermind setting your whole body alight in a blaze of glory). It's typical to see mage's using weapons or heatproof gloves as their channeling sights to help prevent self-inflicted burns, and Galacta will typically use his lance or shield for this. However, spells can often be charged and fired off faster and more powerfully when expelled through the body alone. That, and breathing fire looks cool as hell. Galacta figures a parched throat and dry eyes for a couple hours is worth the payoff. He's tried the whole counter element deal to cool off faster, but Water magic doesn't mesh well with him. He lacks the the serenity and steady flow at his core to understand it.

Also! As a fun little addition. If you're wondering why I ting his fire pink, it's because that's the color of his natural Energy magic. Elemental magic is still dependent on the user's own mana pool, with it's appearance changing from mage to mage depending on the individual's natural magic properties.

This is just my own thoughts I've scraped together into the doughy mixing bowl of my brain, of course. And, like dough, these thoughts are subject to change and grow later on. I've got some thoughts on the ins and out of How elemental magic, and the other types, are cast in terms of the technical (l say loosely cause it's literally magic) aspects of them, but I don't have all those details ironed out yet. My mind is a fickle thing, never wanting to settle on one headcannon or another. It's part of the reason I hesitate to write and draw longer character scenes and interactions, my opinions of them constantly shifting. But! I do think I'm getting to the point where I can keep them somewhat consistent in my head. Thus, my little fire magic spiel.

Just saw a silly post involving ALL of the kids together, including Jack and Dazzle, and that just got me thinking about some VERY cute things.

First, the idea of Eclipse having Jake and Andy back (and maybe even in their own bodies) in time for Earth and Monty's wedding, and him being able to actually attend. Firstly, I can't decide which is better: him just bringing all of his kids with him because why wouldn't he? Or him originally intending to go alone, but being guilted into bringing all of the kids.

Second cute thing: He arrives to find most of the other guests (almost exclusively Celestial family members, though Nebula also very carefully planned out her work to have time to be there) already there and mingling. Of course, his arrival draws attention (especially since he brought a whole pack of kids with him). Earth had mentioned to all of her siblings that Eclipse had been looking after some kids, but none of them were really sure how much he was actually taking care of the kids; they figured he might just be housing them and only making sure they have what they absolutely need.

That question drops the longer Eclipse and his kids are there. They all see him sharing sarcastic quips with Andrew, comfortably allowing Charlie and Jake to snuggle against him on either side, patiently (at least for him) answering Jake and Andy's barrage of questions (they're especially interested in Lunar, who seems to have unnatural capabilities for an animatronic). Overall, everyone sees Eclipse genuinely caring for these kids.

Next thing: As soon as the ceremony's over, Earth and Monty are able to mingle with everyone. Of course, Earth goes in for hugs with her siblings first. But, then she goes down the lineup to Eclipse. She runs over to him, excited, saying how happy she is that he was able to be there. Still at max excitement, she asks if she can hug him. His reply, "It's a special day. Sure," in his usual monotone. He opens his arms and finds himself being squeezed seconds later.

Now, the kids: Of course, each group of kids is curious about the other. Jake, Andy, and Andrew are quickly taken by all of Jack's features, Jake even pestering Solar a little bit about Jack's construction. While Charlie also finds these things cool, she ends up spending more time with Dazzle. During introductions, Dazzle mentions that her name used to be Evelyn but that she mostly goes by Dazzle now. And, whether this is enough of a clue on its own, or if the name brings a quick flash of mysterious memory, Charlie asks if Dazzle is a dead kid. When Dazzle says yes, Charlie eagerly shares that she, and the rest of the kids with her, are ghost kids. Dazzle quickly jumps from this topic to starting up a game with Charlie, then recruiting the other kids to join in.

Final thing: Eclipse spends most of the time after the ceremony just hanging back, mostly keeping a distant eye on the kids while they play. But, eventually, Sun goes over to join him, starting with a stereotypical, "Kids, huh?" This is met with an aloof sigh. "Yeah. Dead kids." "Yeah...Dead kids." Sun then goes on to ask about each of Eclipse's kids. He knows Eclipse knows about Evelyn, since he was around for the incident. So, he just asks Eclipse to tell him about his kids: which ones he knew before their deaths, what he knew about each of them, what they each like and dislike, etc. There's no mushy talk of how much Eclipse has changed, or any mention of the past. There's just two dads talking about their kids.

a small heads up, i'm not a pro or an art teacher, so these tips are just based on my own experience as a self-taught artist:

just draw. sounds simple, but practice really does make perfect. i always struggle with motivation at the beginning of a drawing, but trust me, the flow state kicks in once you get started

references are your best friend! omg, they make such a difference, especially for bigger pieces or anything you're unsure about

learn from other artists, but don’t just copy. figure out how they do things and put your own spin on it. for me, studying comic artists helped a lot with simplifying anatomy in a way that makes sense (im still learning though xD)

don’t overwhelm yourself! focus on one thing at a time. if you’re doing a composition study, don’t get too caught up in tiny details or textures—focus on the big picture first

listen to your body and mental health. take breaks, stretch, and don’t be afraid to step away for a bit. sometimes a quick walk can clear your mind and recharge you

dont compare yourself to anyone but your past self and if you post stuff/have art blog - dont pay that much attention to likes/reblogs n etc, they dont define you or your art

Hi!! I just wanted to say that the way you draw characters/use colors in your art is an absolute dream, I've never seen anything prettier. Do you have a specific way you pick/use colors, or any advice for coloring? You inspire my art so much, and I'd love to learn how to color like you someday :)

aaaah thank you so much I'm really honoured to hear you both like it and that it inspires you anon !! ;v; I don't actually know much about art theory-wise, aside from very basic colour theory that I always forget so most of my choices are pretty instinctual and based on my own preferences!

i can do my best to explain my thought process though! uuh it is. lots of text though just as a warning.

one thing I tend to do with almost everything is pick what kind of colour mood I'm going for! usually, since I love orange and also warm feelings, I'll aim for some kind of warm tone and when doing that I try to slide every colour I pick towards the warm end of the colour wheel. Blacks and whites are especially good for this! As a general thing I almost fully avoid picking any colours along those edges of the colour picker

instead I'll move all my colour choices a nudge into the square for the colours towards the tone I want (in this case warm) (the white is there be warm too I just forgor to type it).

and since I wanted warm colours for this drawing I desaturated the blue of Brain's pants so it would fit in better. I once heard someone say you should always pick one main colour and saturate fully and the further away from it on the colour wheel you got, the more desaturated your colours should be. I don't really do that bc I like my colours to stay bright but I do keep it in mind to mess around with sometimes.

I'm not always great at keeping this consistent, but I think it usually makes for pretty decent results... Other things I keep in mind are that when I pick the colour for my shadows I always make a little slide on the colour wheel towards the opposite tone of what I based my main colours on. oh and picking the right base colours ?? no clue tbh I always put every colour on it's own layer and then I spend a couple minutes adjusting them all seperately until I feel like they go well enough together. I usually avoid the bottom to right section of the square fully, bc I find they often get oversaturated and muddy, but that's just a personal preference I guess.

also since I enjoy the way coloured lineart works for my stuff I tend to mess around with layer settings for my lineart! usually the end results will look something like this:

where the clipped layer is clipped on to my colours folder. lineart is the only place where I just use plain black since I'm gonna change it with these layer settings later. it often still shows up as black for darker colours (and especially blues?) but it keeps a slightly coloured edge that I enjoy. if the blacks of the end result don't look good, messing around with the layer opacity usually changes stuff up. sometimes I'll also erase part of the lineart from one of the layers as a way to adjust.

I think what might be more relevant though, is the way I've been picking my colours for most of my recent posts though, which is. very differently. and also quite dependant on the fact I've been drawing on Tegaki! Tegaki has a limited colour palette that looks like this

only the 6 colour slots next to the bottom greyscale can be replaced by your own colours. As shown here I only bothered to add something to half of them; mainly the beige-ish colour I like to use for whites, a brown that I never use bc it's ugly with everything else here and a purple? that I only Think I added. both the brown and purple suffer from being too desaturated for the rest of the palette, which makes them stand out in a pretty bad way when used tbh.

I have. absolutely no idea what I'm doing with colours on this site though ngl. I think it just automatically pushes you to be a little more chaotic with the choices? a simple example is the green I picked for Link's tunic here doesn't really have any good, easy choice for shading imo. most of the "darker" green tones just feel more saturated, and it sticks out pretty bad as a shading colour for the more muted green I picked for the tunic. Removing those, the choice was either a mossy green or a blue.

and while the mossy green is still green, it feels far too dark a shading colour compared to what I picked as shading for the rest of the drawing. The blue has the added bonus of being closer to the purple I used for the black-ish parts.

I think my point is that it's really easy to push yourself to make some fun new choices when the tools you're using limit you a bit in a way? Looking at it now, I'm also seeing that the hands were lined with very different colours. I remember just thinking that I couldn't be bothered to find the exact same purple I used for the first hand so I just went with the first thing I landed on, that being a pink. But now I think it works pretty well since the one hand is lifted a bit more into the light and that goes well for a bright colour like pink. happy accidents and all that right ?

I am fully just yapping at this point 🧍 but the point still goes for most things drawn on this site.

like there was no reason to add the blues or reds or pinks to the heather here but I only had so many purple shades to work with. it might be less realistic but I don't think it would've come out as well if I had stuck to only the purple shades from my reference photo.

This ended up way way too long and I have no idea if any of it made sense or was helpful at all, but it was surprisingly fun to reflect on my own choices a bit more! especially since I often just do whatever I feel like I think it's helpful to sit back and consider what instinct actually tells me it's the right thing to do.

in an attempt to do something actually helpful uuh I recommend messing around with 2 specific things and switching around with them a bit; namely limited colour palettes (like 1 or 2 main tones imo) and then just going absolutely ham and just using whatever colour for everything (make them orange! put some blue and purple on the bark! leaves can be blue if they want to! (go more ham than I did tbh))

I think just messing around does so much for making some kind of sense of colours even without Knowing how they work. it's easy to say we should all study, but personally I'm pretty bad at it and it's more fun to just trial and error it... errors do happen a lot though omg do they happen, but that's helpful for figuring stuff out too!
