Welcome to Explaining Homestuck!

Are there parts of Homestuck that confuse you? Any bits or elements where you go "I didn't really understand that"? Then please ask me to explain it!

Feel free to send me an ask, tag me in posts where you're confused, or anything else if you need something about Homestuck's lore, events, rules, or anything else explained.

Notes:

I don't claim to be 100% accurate, but I'm fairly certain about everything I say on this blog. If you find an inaccuracy, please tell me!

I can definitely not be called upon as an accurate professor of fandom history. For that, you should probably ask someone who was there.

Similarly, this is not a theorising blog. I may make assumptions based on evidence given in the comic, but I'm not making up full fantheories, or *generally* talking about them (I may comment on the evidence for them if asked, though, but this is mainly about the facts.)

The Epilogues, Beyond Canon, Hiveswap, Friendsim/Pesterquest and the Skaianet Files can all be asked about and considered as sources. However, when talking about the main body of Homestuck (what most explanations will generally refer to) these all will be considered dubiously canon sources at best, with Skaianet in particular being completely theoretical in its contents, as it's been de-canonised and, and will only be considered as "it's possible this happened in canon, but it's not confirmed anywhere other than here so we can't say for sure".

I can't reliably comment on Vast Error, or any other similar fan projects or adventures. I'll at best have passing knowledge of them, sorry. You *can* ask but it will just be from my best of memory from reading them (or not at all if I haven't).

No shipping drama. If a ship appeared or was implied in the comic (even "problematic" ones) it will be considered as an event that happened in the comic, no matter if people like the pairing or not. Similarly, no character discourse will be present either. You're welcome to argue with each other, but this blog isn't about that.

Hussie is a person. It would be unbecoming of me to talk about her too much, and so generally only his character (the orange guy in the green shirt) or their given statements about the comic will be mentioned.

Have fun, please! This blog is intended to improve knowledge of the text, not punish anyone for a lack of it, so don't be mean to someone if they were wrong.

PS. And yes! Please ask me about Problem Sleuth, and other MSPAs, including SBaHJ. I'd be happy to dig into queries about them.

Oooh wouldja be so kind as to go into a bit more detail re: rejecting vs. ignoring canon? Would you say it's a bit like that one Brecht idea of "Not X, But Y"? Love reading your stuff, have a good one!

oooh, i hadn't actually heard this expressed in words before but with regards to the not / but idea before. but it is basically exactly like this, yeah. im only really skimming the wikipedia page since i do not really have the capacity to go take acting lessons right now, but it hits a lot of the same beats. i describe it as a kind of haunting, largely because i work on vast error as well and we love a good haunting when we're circled around the spritecooler.

it's also a trope that homestuck pulls from a lot - this kind of haunting by what you are not. you see it a lot in dirks relationship to daves bro, in vriska vs (vriska), in rose and jasprose, and the last non-goof pesterlog in homestuck is about terezi wishing that, if she couldn't be that more successful self, that she could at least remember what that more successful self did.

but this extends beyond the bounds of just "homestuck canon", the versions of characters we see on screen, but also, every depiction of the character, ever. vast error kind of gets at this in some interesting ways too, stuff like alternate timelines being "probabilities", where the more something happens in an alternate timeline, the more likely it is to happen in the "canon" timeline.

it gets called "fanfic brain" sometimes, but i think it's even more malleable than just fanfics. its easy to blame fanfics because so often they rely on repetition and derivatives, and it echoes on itself in that way. but stuff like the requiem cafe height charts, the way characters are depicted in pesterquest, the way big name fans draw them, the way your circle of friends on discord post about them, and how much investment you put into any of them, they all influence the way a character is read, intentionally or not.

but the thing is, stuff like the requiem cafe, pesterquest routes, big name fans, meta posts, they're all derivatives of the source material. that doesn't make them bad, by any means, and in a lot of cases, they can be really, really good. and that doesn't make the source material good, either - in a lot of cases, it can be really, really bad.

but there is still value to be found in the bad, and that i think is the important distinction in rejecting vs ignoring. it may suck ass, but it's there for a reason. and sometimes, that reason is as simple as "andrew hussie is pretty racist", and then you can just not be racist (to the best of your ability, anyway, something something interrogate your base assumptions) and move on.

but sometimes its more complex than that.

for example, the trickster arc is actually vastly improved by the homestuck epilogues's existence. the way the analogy of meat and candy shakes out in homestuck is kind of underdeveloped, and it might not be entirely graspable what exactly the trickster arc is getting at, even during the end when hussie and caliborn talk directly about what the point of that was.

and its not entirely flawless in the epilogues either (see: 16k word blog post i wrote about it a few years ago) but having that more clear picture of the mindset that the trickster lollipop and "candy" as an image represents does genuinely make it better. it's something i look forward to seeing on rereads instead of just dreading like a6i3.

it kind of gets to what i think is fun about writing a derivative and/or transformative work - there is the "play with all your action figures at once" feeling that i think most people get immediately, but its also in the challenge of making something meaningful out of playing with all your action figures at once, but that meaning doesnt have to come from just the good parts - the bad parts are just as meaningful to me

its also kind of difficult to separate things like growing up as a boy scout and having "leave things better than you found them" drilled into my mind forever. because it is sort of an interesting idea, right? obviously, the next step then, is that "better" is a really subjective thing, and worth interrogating.

is it actually improving things? by what means are you judging that improvement? bdth jane is spiritually a high school dropout going through an identity crisis. she's a nosey prick and had a full meltdown after she casually ran into someone who's not even her ex. that's really different from homestuck^2 jane, who is an on-screen child abuser, one of just two on-screen rapists in homestuck, horrendously troll-racist, etc. etc.

a lot of people like bdth jane more than hs2 jane - it's one of the most common pieces of feedback i get - but if i'm being honest with myself, that doesn't mean much to me? not because i'm insecure about my jane, it's just like. yeah, i can imagine you do like the down to earth weirdgirl more than the antagonist of a beloathed webcomic. but i dont know if that makes bdth jane better than hs2 jane, just because the metrics for "better" arent the same as the metrics for "liked" yknow.

tl;dr: when youre writing something derivative/transformative and decide to not engage with a part of a story, you are left with a hole you have to fill, since that piece youre removing was there for a reason. and i imagine most people want to fill it with something better, but you also have to know what "better" looks like because "i like it more" isnt always right

#anyways I've just read up to date on Vast Error and I kinda love it #Like it hits this homestuck feeling where I wanna either hug or be every girl character on screen #It's very interesting how Hiveswap Vast Error and the Epilogues & HS^2 have different approaches to what made homestuck interesting #and none of them manage or even try to emulate the whole package #also I've started learning Rust and ofc I'm still playing Destiny 2 more or less daily #(come play that game with me btw I want friends) (or don't it light not be ur thing anyways)#and I have a few other things I feel like I'm on the verge of falling back into like Celeste or Digimon anyways #This is *not* how I should balance tags and posts

This is a blog run by Mod Tav I use He/They/It Pronouns and I'm good with masculine terms! I’m a minor! I’m fine with doubles on most kins of mine! }:)

I’ll make things for all Homestuck & Hiveswap related kins, fictives, IRLs, ETC. Including Blood/Kidswaps, Classpects, Things like Paradox Space & SBAHJ and other stuff in that realm! I also do fan HS content, like DistantQuest! I’m also fine with HS2 & the Epilogues! I can do kins from fanfics and such as well, but I’ll be more inclined to do it if it’s from something I’ve read before :D Feel free to ask me to do something I DON'T have on the requests list (I'm always open to suggestions!!) or for requests from other homestuck content I didn't list! Poem / Sentence Compilation - Poems and Sentences from things that give off the vibe of your kin!

Icons - Simple as the name! An icon for a character! Feel free to specify any aesthetic or stuff to add in :)

Header - Custom tumblr headers! Feel free to specify any aesthetic or stuff to add if you’d like as well

Lockscreens / Wallpapers - Lockscreens or wallpapers for Phones or Laptops ETC. Just specify what you’d want in it, and the pixel dimensions!

Pride Edits - Edits with flags in the background, you can request multiple characters in one ask and/or multiple labels. You can also request ships. An example of this would be a post like “Aradia Megido is Nonbinary Transfem Bi” with Aradia and the specific flags in the background. Specify what character you’d like and what labels (You can ask for more specific things but if you want a specific flag you can include a link)

DNI Banners - Custom Do Not Interact post banners! Dividers - Themed dividers for posts!

Userboxes - Custom userboxes that you can save and use with credit! You can specify color or image if you’d like

Doodles - I might not be able to do this one as often, but I can do doodles or small sketches of your kin requests!

[CLOSED] Sprite Edits - Edits of Pesterquest Sprites, Talksprites, or Regular Homestuck sprites! this one might take longer to get out than a regular request! If you want specific things, be specific!

Playlists - Short Playlists of around 10 (or 6 if you want a shorter one) songs relating to a character! Feel free to specify certain artists or to ask for certain genres!

Validation - A small couple sentences worth of validation for you! For if you’re feeling bad or if you’d just like some reassurance specify what you’d like in your request! Characters Confirmations - Just a little message from a specified character. Can be ship, be as specific in what you’d want as you’d like! I can write things from almost any HS character, I can do multiple in one little message, etc. Be specific to what you want please!

Canon Calls - A Little sendout to the masses for those looking for their canonmates! Leave your blog in the request so people can reach out!

Kinfessions - Confessions of stuff! Can be serious or more light hearted. Get some stuff out your brain by putting it into the anon void }:P

Coin Flips / Dice Rolls - A coin flip would be divination using a coin. For example, sending in an ask “Heads I’m ___, Tails I’m ___”, will get you an answer of either Heads or Tails! For more Options with this, I can also do dice rolls (I own D4s, D6s, D8s, D10s, D12s, And D20s!) You don’t have to tell me what the question is, by the way. You can ask something like “Can I get a D6 Dice Roll to tell me who I’m kin with” And I’ll respond with, for example “I got a 3 for the question who are you kin with.

Card Divination - Card Divination using different types of cards, I have Balderdash Cards and Tarot, I’ll also provide a small analysis. When you ask your questions you can be specific, for example maybe asking about clarification for a relationship or for events etc.

Pronoun Validation, Finding, or Making - Validating your pronouns by writing a short sentence about you using the specific pronouns you’d like, Finding pronouns for you (just specify what sort of vibe, if you don’t want to you can just elaborate on your kin), Or making neopronouns (same rules as finding)

Flags - Custom Pride Flags to the colors of your kin, or custom labels!

Music Divination - Similar to the card divination but I use songs! Kin Memories - Giving you the Setting, People, and Emotions in a possible memory you want elaboration for or if you don't have any memories of (Using a divination method) Color Pallets - A color pallet based on either your kin or other descriptors you want to give!!

hm so like re: this and reading some other stuff thats like homestuck epilogues/2 critical (being super slow compared to hs, being depressing, making all the characters become assholes for like no reason (hs2 crit stuff in the later half of this vid, about 30 or 40 minutes in i think??), the creators being uh not the best people, etc.), plus my own slow experience with trying to read through the incredible boring long winded sloughs that were the epilogues meat and candy when they first came out uhh

i think that i’ll skip on finishing the epilogues/hs^2 since they honestly sound. so. boring.

like.

we as an entire internet culture are just so sick and tired of when beloved media from our childhood get some weird reboot but its dark and gritty and edgy on purpose. for example the entire cw reboot joke meme that applies to riverdale/archie comics, the winx club netflix show, and now powerpuff girls, but the girls are “adults who are depressed and hate their childhood heroics” or whatever is even happening with that show right now since its still technically in production lol.

and you know what. epilogues/hs2 sounds like its the dumb cw reboot.

so.

i think ill stick to the games (friendsim/hiveswap/pesterquest), already existing better written fanfic and fan works/adventures that feature original characters and canon characters doing. not riverdale stuff. so yeah.

for fanfic hmm. i’ll probably reread stuff and then move to try to find other things lol. and like all the stuff directly listed here are things that i’ve personally read before except LoDaD and the general big tvtropes list so like yes i like these i approve of them i have read them in my lifetime at some point and you should also try them lol.

honestly i’m currently re-reading the classic crossover between hs and alien nation, which is an interesting movie that you should watch even if its a dumb 90′s movie that isnt the best lol. while its technically not finished/hasnt been updated since 2014, honestly the endings of all of them are good enough to be like “yeah i could stop here” so eh. i will warn that the fics, from 2012-2014 era, have the r-slur in them, which is cringy and unfortunate. :/

maybe i’ll finally finish the land of dungeons and dragons, by the same person as above, which is like 600K words and 173 chapters.

there’s straw soldiers, which is great. i remember waiting for the final chapter update and it literally dropped when i was in the middle of science class in high school lol. alternia decides to have trolls undergo surgery/learning/etc. to be spies on earth preparing for an alternian invasion. karkat is one of them.

terawatt outlaws is incredible. where sollux is discovered and taken by the condesce to power her ship, sollux meets his ancestor the psiioniic/ancient beta universe mituna captor, and they team up and start a revolution.

a lullaby for the gods starts out as a fluffy found family crack crossover between homestuck and the avengers, and a plot starts forming in later chapters. its still ongoing so you can binge read it but you’ll have to wait for an actual ending.

K8 wasn't on the hiveswap team, at least to my knowledge. The critiques of Lanque still stand, but she's never had any control over Hiveswap Friendsim or the way it was written. I don't even know if K8 was friends with the crew at that point either.

There’s a lot of general transphobia in the Homestuck writing team, even if we disclude Kate. It’s not always inherently obvious, but it’s definitely there.

(I’m definitely not sure of Kate’s timeline with the team or her friendships with them, but she’s always been a very loud voice in the fandom and was in the production team for Vast Error, so I feel confident enough to say that some of her views were probably heard and maybe shared in those circles. Especially since her rhetoric follows a LOT of the rhetoric I saw in the fandom around 2015-2016).

For instance, when someone asked V (who wrote Lanque’s route) if Dirk was transphobic in Meat, the response was this:

He has no active malice towards Roxy. He doesn't even question Roxy's decision to transition. But Dirk doesn't see gender as important, and making the effort to remember and scrupulously respect Roxy's new pronouns in a context where Roxy is not even aware of it is not a priority for him.

So, essentially, yes: Dirk is somewhat transphobic, because refusing to call a trans person by their preferred pronouns, even where they cannot see, is fucking transphobic. Roxy might not be able to tell that Dirk isn’t using the right pronouns, but Dirk is actively normalising the idea that he shouldn’t use “he/him” in reference to Roxy in his mind. If gender was really that unimportant to him, using the correct pronouns shouldn’t be that hard; what would it matter to him, then, if suddenly his best friend is a guy? What difficulty would he perceive in just dropping the s in she?

V then says this:

He might even listen if someone were to take the time to explain it to him. But it might not ever be something he can personally understand from his position of self-absorbed hypermasculinity.

Which - again, if gender means so little to him, why would he need it to be explained to him that using the right pronouns matters? He should just actively do it. Otherwise, if you’re claiming “self-absorbed hypermasculinity” to be the reason why he can’t wrap his head around gender and pronouns, then surely what you’re saying is Dirk is transphobic to some degree?

This also doesn’t go into the fact that hypermasculinity is explicitly tied to gender, so clearly Dirk DOES care about gender because he is inherently imbued with - and perpetuating the enactment of - masculinity and its more toxic effects. Dirk relies on masculinity and being male. You can’t then say that gender doesn’t matter to him. It just doesn’t make sense.

And again:

Some of his mistakes are innocent, and some of them are him behaving like a dick in a context where he believes there will be no consequences for it.

Which is still inherently transphobic. If you’re a “dick” about someone’s pronouns because you know you won’t face the consequences, you are actively engaging in transphobia.

The problem is, of course, that if V can claim that Dirk isn’t transphobic in Meat - or at least doesn’t portray some elements of transphobia there because it’s a “mistake” and “gender doesn’t matter to him” - then V could have also absolutely fucked up the first representation we ever get of a transmasculine character. Without fully understanding what transphobia is, you’ll never actually be able to write a trans character without potentially falling into those pitholes.

Of course, Lanque’s route came before the Epilogue drop. So the suggestion there is that V... hasn’t really learnt since Friendsim what is or isn’t transphobia. Then you consider at this point V probably was in contact with Kate - was definitely in contact with some of the other problematic people from the Epilogue/HS^2 writing team - and, ah, that’s why there wasn’t an improvement.

I’m going to be completely honest when I say I do not trust any of those writers to actually write transmen. I barely trust them to write transwomen, considering the way they write Vriska, but transmen are absolutely off the table for them. I genuinely do not want to see more transmasc representation in Homestuck until they listen to transmasc fans and figure out what transphobia is.

Alright so there seems to be like, a tinge of Rose existing as her own person, doing things that Dirk dislikes, but its in conversation only, so it seems facetious.

The other true thing though is the narrative is entirely Dirk’s perspective, and Dirk is exactly the kind of person who would absolutely love and believe he was capable of subsuming another person’s soul and idealogy entirely, but we went through this deceit in the epilogues with John and Roxy as well, with John’s unquetionaing hold on reality and what is canon also seeming to have an unconcious warping effect to whatever John thought was important, but Roxy gave a good point of how do you even know you did this and i didn’t choose it or wouldnt have chose it? you dont

So we could see that being repeated here, either as a parallel of that or a subversion, remains to be seen

lol the andrew hussie is peeking through a bit here, so Homestuck2 is gonna be the exact thing I figured a sequel would be, its going to be a sort of retelling of the story, but its gonna flip the importance for certain things in the opposite directions, so right here its saying Homestuck is a story with a layer of importance on the characters themselves and their mindsets and how they lived in the environment they found themselves in, with the lore and the conceit of the story being a huge creation story more of a backdrop than the focus

so Homestuck2 is going to be a more "creation story” focused more on the sburb lore, buts its going to have less of a focus on the characters (perhaps even to the detrimnet? maybe characters will seem strange and out of character? but he kinda already made that feeling i the audience with the epilogues, thats what that intended effect was)

and neither one i think will turn out to better or worse than the others, theres definitely going to be benefit and downsides for both, but its not hard to see that Homestuck1 is the story that Hussie wanted to Tell, and Homestuck2 is how he’s changing it and telling a different story than he originally would have in the first place

not that hes changing Homestucks orignal story at all, but now hes telling a decidedly different one

Thus far, even though I understand Dirk’s basic mindset being “Hussie’s story sucks im gonna tell a BETTER one” and deciding that he alones gets to decide others will is unquestionably villainous train of thought, like why cant we let the characters just decide for themselves what kind of story they wanted to have and be genuine..

I AM dying of curiosity to see what sort of lore and information were going to get out of this, especially with the twist of that sort of focus being brought more into view, it’s a tantalizing glimpse of something very sexy that im into...

The World of Homestuck to me, HAS always been more infinitely exciting and interesting to me than the characters themselves, even though i liked them fine, they werent the reason why i kept reading the story for sure

Anything little thing we get about sburb or the world system out of this im happy with, regardless of what happens to the characters

(Would that be considered a villainous mindset if I was in canon? maybe ^^; good thing im not lol it does give off very “evil mad scientist morally corrupt experiments” kind of vibe lolol)

The critical moment, in the wake of which everything started to take a nosedive into the protracted, endless slog of sheer insufferability we got saddled with near the end. I do have to laugh at this though, because your not wrong??? but also, it was inevitable that a story that started out like homestuck and was written like homestuck and ended like homestuck would inevitably turn out the way it did

it was a communal product of the screaming masses that turned into a singular mans story, it was unfortunately going to lose something to everyone, because everyones ideas couldnt all coexist in one canon at the same time (thats what outside of canon is for)

and then Dirk does something I DIDNT expect him to do

instead of entirely subsuming other’s will like a villain would, he has instead opened up his heart and conciousness to absorb the ideas, suggestions and wills of the masses, he is literally trying to bring back the act1 flavor of homestuck by taking suggestions, be he is ironically doing something no different than hussie did by curating and choosing which one to respond to

hah! he really does think he is the hero of this universe with Hussie as some sort of villain.

So Hussie has probably intentionally curated this idea of himself as “Author Villain” who drives the story seemingly into mud by seeming to reject and upend the audiences expectation rather than curate them and bringing forth the best out,

this happens with the epilogues undoubtedly,

and this environment has gown a character from inside the story to step out and try to “oust” him from this position and instead tell a “good” story one that “everyone” wants, but is in fact detrimental to the story and world that the characters inside it themselves wants, which is was Hussie curated the whims to in the epilogues instead of the audience

So maybe this will be a “good” story, and hit all the marks for what the audience wanted originally, but there is no benevolent force to make sure a happy ending exists for any of the characters inside of it, because what the characters want doesnt matter anymore, only the lore does

I probably should've made this post yesterday during 4/13 but I'm one day late so it doesn't matter.

If I haven't discovered Homestuck last year, It'd probably take me more time to realize that there's nothing wrong with being a part of the Queer community and indulging in things that people may look down upon. I was pretty much a homophobic, transphobic and enbyphobic child (I live in a VERY Christian country in Asia, So I naturally had Christian and religions relatives and family members)

Heck, I probably wouldn't even have realized that I was somewhere around the Nonbinary spectrum (Demi-girl) and Asexual (Gray-Sexual) spectrum as early as possible and would've probably thought I was just pretending to be these things and I was a mistake against God or some religious bullcrap like that (I'm lucky enough that my family was never EXTREMELY strict in raising me with Christian beliefs compared to my cousins but still, My Dad and Mom are still kinda enbyphobic / transphobic / homophobic and the only person in my family other than me who's NOT against Queerness is my Bisexual sister, who I don't have the best connections with)

If I had never watched those Undertale videos by my favorite youtubers at the time, I probably wouldn't have had the algorithm send me megalovania different remixes versions videos (look I loved Megalovania with my fucking soul and heart) and me eventually stumbling upon the Homestuck Megalovania which ended up making the algorithm send me a Vast Error video which ended making me look up the Homestuck Webcomic, even if I thought the series had died. (I wasn't aware of the epilogues till like September and when Homewtuck^2 dropped)

Heck I probably wouldn't even have joined this site if it wasn't for Tumblr not allowing me to save Homestuck Images to put as background images for my google portfolio for online school (just a portfolio where I like put all the online activities I did and had fun with it, not a portfolio of me stealing art and claiming it was mine lmao)

It's a bit sad how I joined around the time Homestuck was starting to lose it's charm and eventually missed out a lot (I was like 1 hear old when Homestuck existed and ended up time playing crappy flash dress up games and roblox and never knowing about Tumblr don't @ me) but hey, memories are memories and time is an illusion.

Anyways, Here's pictures of one of my favorite fancharacters I've created for Homestuck stuff. Haven't given them a name but they are definitely a bootleg version of Vriska x Eridan.

Bigender fish troll that prefers They/Them and She/Her, masculine and gender-neutral insults if you wanna insult them (like son of a bitch, Dumbass, Fuckass) and masculine/gender-neutral slang or professional terms (I forgot the word, I sometimes hate the English language a lot) like "Sir" "Sire" "Mister" "Dude" "Bro" "Lad" etc.)

Overall, Chill violet blood that bottles up their feelings (and I'm still working on their character)

As you can see, today is not only the 11th anniversary of Homestuck but also the 1st anniversary of its Epilogues. Now, imagine one year ago, you were waiting almost 2.5 year for the Epilogues (three years if you don’t count Credits). You wanted to know the answers to many questions such as: Is Lord English defeated once and for all? What happened to that post-Retcon worthless c8nt who lost all of her character development? Is Terezi going to be okay? etc. Sure you got some supplementary stuff like the 1st act of Hiveswap (after like 5 years after its announcement, despite all of its development problems), Friendsim (that visual novel that detailed characters that will appear in later acts of Hiveswap), you read some fanfics like Cool And New Web Comic (personal opinion: very fucking good) and Vast Error (I didn’t read this one but I heard it was good and many people behind it are working with the WhatPumpkin team and on the other official Homestuck shit), there were some official snapchat photos and while those were very good, you knew that they will mean nothing when the Epilogues will drop in. And they finally does, on the Homestuck’s 10th anniversary no less. So you click on The Homestuck Epilogues, happy and excited as fuck and the first thing you see is… an introduction page ripped straight out of AO3.

You earn what can be basically described as a punch in the face where the metaphorical fist is filled with confusion. But it doesn’t end here. Then you notice something more disturbing in content warning and characters:

Rape? Abuse?? Existential Crisis?!? OC?!?! Polyamory?!?!?! GENDER TRANSITION?!??!?!?!?! BARACK! FUCKING!! OBAMA?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?

Like what in the actual fuck is happening?!!

Then you read the Prologue and you are like: Uhm… Okay. It’s not that bad at all, like, far from it. Maybe that AO3 page is just a joke? Everything will be alright right? RIGHT?!?

Then one week later Hussie (with help of some people) drops two nukes on fandom and it all goes to hell. No seriously, it’s like Hussie built Little Boy and Fat Man expies titled Meat and Candy, dropped them on fandom in which the centers of explosions were Dirk’s and Jane’s fandoms respectively and delivered some of the biggest Broken Base effect in Homestuck after like Act 6. Nothing was the same after that. Everybody were fighting each other over who was right, people didn’t even know what was canon anymore and even up to this date people are still misgendering Roxy for fucks sake (it’s not even that hard to remember it: she/her for the Alpha Roxy and her Candy counterpart and he/him for the Meat one; come on man)!

From what I’ve (mostly) seen on Tumblr, most of the Homestuck fans hates it to the bones. Only some individuals actually like them and I happened to be one of those people who likes the Epilogues.

Everyone is pointing a gun at you. Again.

Now, I don’t really care who likes the Epilogues and who doesn’t. Everyone has different opinions. But something tells me that the Epilogues (at least here on Tumblr) are overhated. Like, sometimes, the negativity towards the Epilogues is so big that it makes me feel like I was in Star Wars fandom. And when fandom starts to look like the Star Wars one, you know you are in deep shit.

But you might be thinking by now: Dude, where are going with all of this shit?! Well my dear… uhm… pickles? The point of all of this is that I want to share something with you. And that is the reason. The (main) reason why I (in worst case) have more tolerance towards The Homestuck Epilogues than most of the people (on Tumblr).

When I started writing this long as fuck text I thought that I would easily give more reasons, in other words, give like 3-4 points why I like the Epilogues. But then again it’s better said than done because most of them are connected to this fact:

THE. EPILOGUES. ARE. MOSTLY. NOT. CANON.

This is the reason why I like them, why I can tolerate them. The Epilogues are mostly happening in two new timelines, different from the Alpha one. It’s even stated (or at worst implied) by Jade in Homestuck^2’s 6th chapter that the Meat timeline (and also possibly the Candy one) is not the Alpha one:

The reason why the Epilogues are mostly not canon is that the characters from the Alpha timeline (Terezi, Vriska, Aradia, Sollux, Alt!Calliope etc.) make an appearance in one of the timelines (some of them in both).

Some people who hate the Epilogues stated that it RUINED some of the characters no matter if they liked them or not. That’s kind of… over-the-top because characters that are not from the Alpha timeline are clearly in some cases not the same ones that we know as I see it (at least in case of Neo-Condesce and Doc Strider) as a fuck you towards those fanfics that like to shove Ron the Death Eater and Character Derailment tropes down our throats because some fanfic creators didn’t like some of the characters from the original work.

In other words: Almost all of the characters from the Alpha timeline are the same characters as we know at the very end of Homestuck.

There are still lesser things that I find myself enjoying in the Epilogues:

- The writing is on a very good level and when it’s pissing someone of it’s not from incompetence,

- Post-Retcon Vriska actually gets some actual character development instead of ending up as a useless piece of shit that only insults everyone who achieved much more than she ever would (I mean it took (at least) almost 4 years for this to happen but still),

- The fact that behind Neo-Condesce’s and Doc Strider’s turn to evil is some actual sense, like with the former one it was mind manipulations in her childhood (not to mention the literal mind control by Post-Scratch Meenah) and the latter one (in order to become ultimate) ending up absorbing some of the versions of himself that are basically a massive shitheads (like Bro, Hal, even Caliborn counts),

There are still other pros that either I can’t remember or they are too minor co count.

Does all of this mean that the Epilogues are flawless? PFFFFFF! Of course not. Nothing is perfect. There are some stuff that I don’t like.

The biggest one is that the Epilogues are sometimes overcrowded with so many words detailing every single thing that it actually becomes a slog to get through even one chapter (but then again, this is the reason why I don’t enjoy reading books). Sure, the original comic is like almost thrice as long as the fucking Lord of the Rings in case of the dialogue but it has pictures and animations to be more pleasant for the eyes. Which leads to another con: No. Fucking. Pictures. If I want to look for the details, then at least show me something else than words. Every fucking time I must look at dozens of words describing the most minuscule thing in the novel I’m like:

Also in terms of enjoyment I prefer the Meat Epilogue over the Candy one. When some people say that this book is a big, steaming pile of sadness and depression, at least the Meat part tells you from the start what kind of tone it’s going to have. The Candy part? Not so much. First it’s all happiness, (almost) everyone is happy, birds are happy, clouds are happy, nothing but happiness. And then you get punched in the gut, smashed into the ground and getting kicked over and over and over for so long that when the kicking finally stops it feels like 15 years passed by that time. And just to add up, the pacing in Meat is better than in Candy.

I’m going to piss you off even more but there are moments in the original Homestuck that are more cringe/rage inducing than some of the most painful ones from the Epilogues, particularly the intermissions in Act 6 Act 6 (DON’T GET ME STARTED ON WHAT HAPPENED TO BOTH SERKETS I SWEAR TO FUCKING GOD).

Jokes asides, we had a wild ride since the last 413. The Epilogues (despite what they are) gave us the answers to the biggest questions that Homestuck left for us, we got Pesterquest, the sequel to Friendsim that concluded the history of the MSPAReader (until another sequel -_-) and, of course, we got the official sequel to Homestuck, over 10.5 years later from the original comic’s debut. So, fuck ton of stuff throughout a year for me.

As for the Epilogues, look, I can, in some way, understand that some of you want to stay at least 10 km away from them but it has been a year (well technically almost a year) since they were published on the Homestuck’s official website. It might be a good time to read them once more. Without all of that hype they have built for 2.5 years after the credits. From the different perspective. Maybe even (and I dare to say it) right after yet another re-reading of Homestuck. Either way, remember that in most cases you can give someone or something another chance.

Before I’ll finally end this I must call out some of the more rabid Epilogues haters:

STOP TREATING THE ORIGINAL, ALPHA JANE THE SAME WAY AS A FUCKING NEO-CONDESCE!! THOSE TWO CHARACTERS ARE DIFFERENT CHARACTERS!! SAME WITH ALPHA DIRK AND DOC STRIDER!! MAKE UP YOUR FUCKING MIND!!! STOP ACTING LIKE A BUNCH OF 12 YEAR OLD BRATS!!!

REVIEW: Persephone Station by Stina Leicht

*UPDATE* It’s come to my attention that I was mistaken— this is meant to be a standalone, and to that I say to Stina Leicht, “whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy 😩” Ugh, why go through all of that world building for one book with these lush characters?? I guess i should’ve taken the hint with the epilogue, but for some reason I was convinced that its goodreads page indicated it was a series. Super disappointing. Unfortunately, that does effect my rating, and I will be recanting my curve. Should this error turn out to be a premonition, I will adjust it back. 💔 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Actual rating is like 3.25 Stars, but I honestly very much liked the writing style, prose, and characters, so gave it a round up— it was just the overarching plot, its stakes specifically, that I couldn’t get into. However, I did not DNF because of the aforementioned. We have our entire cast of characters consisting of both womxn and non-binary folx. Helllll yes The dialogue and character dynamics rule and kept me interested. There was just something lacking in the expository sections— and this happens with Book 1s in a series— it all felt very exhaustive, such an info-dump. And that’s okay!— but it lead me to start another book at about 40%, that was almost twice its size in length, finished it, and came back to Persephone. Because the positives really do outweigh my struggle with the stakes and overly-vast world-building, I was determined to finish it, and I’m so glad I did! Genuinely, I will pick up Book 2–The author is very talented and I grew a fondness for the characters. I have a feeling the next installment is really going to hook me in. Thank you to NetGalley, Galley/Saga Press, and Stina Leicht for granting me a very early eARC for my honest review✨

Three years ago, the Homestuck community was in a very different place.

There was a widespread feeling of disillusionment and bitterness about Homestuck. The most cynical voices seemed to dominate the conversation, and that negativity seemed inescapable. For a time, it seemed impossible to believe that Homestuck was meaningful or important, or that it ever could have been.

Today, the mood around Homestuck feels like it’s been utterly transformed. People are talking about Homestuck and its extended world, getting excited about its characters and possibilities, celebrating Homestuck as a story that’s helped them in their struggles, that’s brought them together with friends, that’s given them new ways to think about their lives. A thoughtful and engaged community has emerged around Homestuck analysis, digging more deeply into Hussie’s ambiguous ending to reveal its underlying themes of transcendence and freedom. Much remains uncertain about the protagonists’ future, to be sure—but where once it was difficult to say how Lord English’s defeat was achieved, these days it feels like common knowledge not only how it happened, but what it means. Fan-run projects like OptimisticDuelist’s Homestuck Explained video essays and Kate Mitchell’s Perfectly Generic Podcast have led the way, becoming rallying points for the Homestuck community where thinkers collaborate and share ideas, contributing to a shared well of knowledge that deepens every day.

And while for a time it seemed like Homestuck’s future as an independent media entity might be in jeopardy, these days Homestuck truly feels like it belongs to its fans. The Troll Call and the Hiveswap Friendsim project have not only proven to be a remarkable way of rejuvenating community enthusiasm, they’ve also given passionate, talented writers and artists a chance to be part of Homestuck. It’s these authors who are shaping Homestuck going forward, using their own relationship to Homestuck and its fandom to shape what its future will look like. At the same time, fan projects like Vast Error, its companion game Snowbound Blood, and the Nic Cage ARG are rising to new heights of artistic acheivement and success. What’s more, fan creators and the creators of official Homestuck material are celebrating and reading each other’s works, creating an atmosphere of positivity and enthusiasm for the comic we all love. Hussie’s words about Homestuck’s ending seemed to imply that it was our story now. This year has made that finally feel like a reality.

If, as I now think, part of Hussie’s purpose in crafting an ambiguous ending was to challenge readers to have a kind of radical faith in Homestuck, to believe, in spite of people like Caliborn, that there was something meaningful in Homestuck, something worth engaging with and treating as important, then we have risen to his challenge. We have proven that a passionate community of readers can reshape the conversation, that believing in Homestuck can make it a little bit more real—that maybe it was real all along.

Now everything might change again.

Something is happening in a few days, on April 13th, three years after Homestuck’s official ending. That much seems clear from Skaianet’s countdown, from comments that members of the Hiveswap team have made. What exactly it will be remains to be seen. But it’s very possible, maybe even likely, that in some form it will be the long-awaited Homestuck epilogue, which seems poised to address the questions that most vexed readers at the end of Homestuck—the future fate of the protagonists in Caliborn’s masterpiece, John’s search for meaning, and Terezi’s search for Vriska. If this is the case, then that means the ambiguity of the ending—the ambiguity that has driven the fandom for these last three years—will in whole or in part be resolved. The loop will be closed, as always, by the big man himself. For the first time in years, we’ll be reacting to official answers, rather than our own.

What will that mean for the community? It’s hard to say. Anything could happen. Undoubtedly, whatever answers are presented will satisfy some and disappoint others—because there are as many ideas about what Homestuck could be as there are Homestuck fans.

But what I hope—what I’d like to think—is that the passion and enthusiasm that have grown in this community during this last pause will continue. That we will celebrate this last coda as we have come to celebrate the rest of Homestuck, that we will continue to create stories and comics and memes and music around it, that we will once again make it part of our lives and our hearts.

And of course, that we will continue to do so in the years to come. After all, with Hiveswap and other community projects continuing to shape the Homestuck canon, Homestuck will never really end.

The adventure continues, on into our stories, on into our world.
